4-0 out of 5 stars Good on principles, shallow on cross-platform libraries.
Okay, I got this book mostly to get into issues common to cross platform development. With focus on say, cross-platform gui libraries, and other cross-platform libraries.
5-0 out of 5 stars A guide written especially for professionals
Cross-Platform .NET Development Using Mono, Portable .NET and Microsoft .NET is a guide written especially for professionals. Expert .NET programmers M. J. Easton and Jason King explore the three most popular .NET implementations and demonstrate how to build a powerful cross-platform software using their framework. Flowcharts, examples and sample code lay out all aid in clarification of complex principles of organizational superstructure that will save labor, time, and money. Chapters address common cross-platform pitfalls, using GUI toolkits, incorporating native code, strategies for testing and building, and much more. An enthusiastically recommended resource especially for anyone pursuing, building, or studying for a career in the field.
4-0 out of 5 stars alternatives to Microsoft
Microsoft and cross-platform?! Sounds like an oxymoron. Yet the book shows how .NET has given rise to this. The key step was Microsoft transferring the specifications of C# and .NET's CLI to ECMA and ISO. This lets third parties write compilers that produce IL bytecode and thence to assembly in a given hardware.

4-0 out of 5 stars Timely and informative
Choate's book is well-organized and timely in my opinion. Like Neuberg's Definitive Guide, it describes Rb's classes, controls, and built-in functions in detail, but in the context of today's capability. The chapter selections are good and there is a very readable 21-page index. It's very useful, for example, to have all of the Array functionality described in one place. The emphasis in the book is on the language functionality as opposed to duplicating the User's Guide describing the IDE. In addition to basic functionality, the book is especially strong with respect to text processing and encodings, the shell class and console application development, networking features, and codeless and coded database interfaces.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ouch..... this one is a a disappointment
There are not many REALbasic books out there and most of them our sadly out of date. So I had high hopes for this book. Alas, the author just rambled on with no apparent purpose or direction.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book!
What a waste of paper. Bla bla bla ... this author rambles on and on without ever leading his reader to a helpful destination. I've never seen so much print covering so little substance. Each time I've turned to Choate's book for REALbasic guidance, I've been sadly disappointed. In fact, reading this book is little more than an excercise in futility. You're better off turning to the information supplied with the REALbasic programming language!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Misleading Title
This book is an excellent read. The material is presented completely, concisely, and in an easy to understand manner. However the title of this book is misleading. It really should be "Write Portable code in C". There is some limited discussion of C++, but mostly to discourage you from using it. All other languages are dismissed out of hand, or just completely ignored. As long as you understand this caveat there is much to learn from this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
This is the only book I've seen that covers this material in-depth (The Practice of Programming by Kernighan and Pike touches on the basics). If you've never worked on the development of a piece of cross-platform software, this book will help you avoid a lot of the pitfalls that many programmers have overcome through trial and error. Otherwise, there's not much novel material here for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars I need this book
Enter Brian Hook's Write Portable Code. Portabilityis a sort of a holy grail for programmers, and there is no lack of knowledge floating around Usenet and Internet. However, Brian Hook tried to recommend a book on the subject to a friend, and didn't find one. So he set out to write his own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Coverage of Practical Cross-Platform Challenges
In "Cross Platform Game Programming," Steven Goodwin describes the major challenges developers face when building a cross-platform game or engine.Published by Charles River Media (ISBN 1584503793) for $49.95, the book spans eleven chapters through 460 pages and includes a CDROM containing the book's sample code and several useful toolkit libraries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cross Platform is Necessary to Recover the Costs
With the development costs of a modern graphics intensive game reaching something like $15 million, you can't afford to ignore any sizable market, so if for another million or so you can make your game work on one machine like say a PC, but also on others like an X-Box, a Mac, a ... well you get the picture.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Vacuous Book
This is a waffly book that will not tell you anything useful about web services. It is padded out with banal advice such as "Althought the standards don't require it, you should try to use meaningful names for you web services."But as to a description about the weird use of name spaces in WSDL -- forget about it.3-0 out of 5 stars Very Introductory
When I bought this book, I was hoping to understand how to solve more complex interoperability problems between Java and C# (.Net) Web Services. I was disappointed. The book is for beginners, and that what it says on the back cover also, so no hard feelings. It feels like you have bought two introductory books, one for C# Web Services and another one for Java Web Services, and combined into one. The one thing that is childish about all Web Services books is that they all use simple examples (e.g. Stock Quote Web Service). Any one can implement that kind of Web Service by just reading on the Internet. Passing primitive types between two nodes is easy. No book in the market including this one teaches you how to send complex types between Java Web Service Server and C# client or vice versa. This book fails to teach you how to write your own serializers/deserializers in Java as well as how to parse the response in C#. The book provides very basic material about Apache SOAP, Apache Axis, and .Net C# environment. Don't expect anything extraordinary from this book. For most intermidiate to expert Web Services developers it does not matter if you own this book or not. It will not add any value to your existing knowledge of Web Services. For beginners I have only one advice, there is enough material on the Web to get you started, so save your money. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized
I felt this book was poorly organized, and lacking in the type of information I wanted.1-0 out of 5 stars Failure to explain any basic concepts clearly
There are two extremely catagories of books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Top to Bottom coverage
I've read about SOAP and Web Services from other books and have always come out with questions about how certain ideas work "under the hood". I feel that I really understand a concept if I know how it works at the wire level. The problem with many of the books out there is that they give you a very good coverage of the technology but not much insight into the fundamentals. Scott Seely's book on the other hand gives you a very balanced view of SOAP. It discusses XML schemas and the SOAP messaging protocol. Immediately, Scott jumps into implementing a SOAP server by hand which is essential to understanding how SOAP really works (and to learn to appreciate the need for SOAP frameworks that are currently available on various systems). The book is worth just for this chapter, if nothing else. The case study of an auction system puts a nice finishing touch, rounding off a comprehensive top to bottom treatment of SOAP. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good OpenDoc primer, but lacks details that programmers need
The book quickly covers most aspects of OpenDoc.The book can be used as a primer before jumping into the OpenDoc programmer's reference manual, but nothing more.As I read the book, the most intriguing details were always referred to as being beyond the scope of the text;the reader is constantly being referred to the online reference manual.A beta version of the OpenDoc toolkit and reference manual is included. The toolkit is an easy install, and I was running the docshell the first day and playing around with some included parts. The reference manual, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Some of the sections (e.g. Scripting) are incomplete. An up-to-date version of the reference manuals and toolkit are available on the web. 3-0 out of 5 stars "...a Beginning"
That is what this rather simple book is, a beginning. Having been out of the MAC world for years and, over the past week5-0 out of 5 stars The first technical book I ever read cover to cover!
This book does exactly what it says it will do: it teaches you how to operate your Mac in a non-Mac world giving many, many practical solutions. It even gives impractical solutions when no practical solutions are available! Published in year 2000, it is a treasure of fresh web links thatallow you to get current information on every topic covered. Instead ofgoing into boring, techno-babble the book focuses on giving scenarios ofwhat is trying to be accomplished, such as finding the best way to transferfiles between Macs, PCs, and Unix platform machines. Then it providessolutions in general terms naming any hardware or software required toaccomplish the task. Finally, it provides a resource list at the end ofeach topic which includes related commercial, shareware, and freewarepublishers, hardware manufacturers, and their web sites. If you are theperson in your cross-platform organization or school that other people relyon to provide them answers, this book is a valuable resource! ... Read more
