Very interesting, provocative, little book
Dreyfus is a Heidegger scholar who is also known for his books explaining "why computers can't think."This short (it can be read in an evening), provocative book discusses some of the problems of reliance on the Internet as a source of information and an educational forum, in a way that is interestingly informed by Dreyfus's study of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty.I highly recommend this book both to students of Continental philosophy (the author's use of Kierkegaard to argue against Habermas's notion of the "public sphere" as the locus of a meaningfully participatory democracy is especially provocative) and to anyone who has ever wondered whether the Internet really is making our lives better.Dreyfus explains why and how it may not be.

Kierkegaard surfs prodigiously...
This is a very little book dealing with a very big subject: does the internet add or detract from meaning in our lives? Such a topic can be covered only in a cursory way within 107 pages, but the major issues are represented in this book, and provide valuable food for thought. From Plato to the net..The early fears.
"On the internet",written by H.L Dreyfus a professor at Berkley is one of the very few books on the market approaching the "net" from a philosophical point of view rather than a technical one.Read more

Terrific ethics text for non-IT managers and decision-makers
I teach a graduate class in Information Technology in the Public Sector, in the M.S. in Public Administration program at a major university in southern California.I selected this text for my class because I found it to be an excellent, wide-ranging and deep exploration of a host of ethical issues dealing with information technology for non-computer majors.While not every article was directly relevant to my class (which is made up of current and future managers of public sector organizations), the book is easy to read and has a "friendly" style that draws you into the articles.Some articles are only a few pages while others are quite long.This text has been very appreciated by my students and the articles in it have been the source of many in-class discussions and debates.Overall: Outstanding! ... Argument in peril
This book takes the position that increasing technological infrastructure and investing in higher information technology does not increase productivity. The argument is complete hokum from beginning to end; however, it is very convincing due to the large amount of evidence presented and the prestige of the pseudoscientist promulgating it.
a book to give away
I read this book for the first time 5 years ago. I worked at a telecom company and everything he wrote on the paradox of IT investments not returning any money is 100 % true. So I bought 20 copies of the book and gave them to upper management. Needless to say it didn't really help.

Still true today
Despite the claims of other reviewers, the evidence that the situation described in Landauer's book has improved since the surge in the internet and its sub-technologies (e.g., the Web) is absent. I'd refer the interested reader to a recent article in the New Yorker entitled "The Productivity Mirage" (J. Cassidy) to see some interesting numbers that bear on this question.Read more

Complex But Wonderful Nonetheless
The book is written in a very complex style -- especially the sections where Lessig goes into the nitty gritty of the architecture behind the Internet -- but the book is a wonderful read, especially for those who come from the mindset that copyright laws should serve to give full control to the creator. While Lessig's style is unnecessarily complex, the book is ultimately worth the effort -- especially for Internet enthusiasts and entrepreneurs who need to understand the implications of copyright laws and how they affect culture and future ideas.

Important book for IP lawyers and internet architects
This is the best of Lessig's books that I've read so far.Lessig is one of the more articulate spokespersons for the movement to protect the public domain, which includes such groups as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Creative Commons, etc., although he may be more moderate in his views than some. From whence comes invention?
Ultimately, the flaw in Lessig's books is his belief that the revolution of personal computing and the internet are the products of intellectuals like himself.Undermining the freedom and property rights of the programmers and companies who really invented these marvels is a profound threat to one of America's most vital and creative industries. ... Pavlichev and Garson
This book demonstrates the state of the art in digital government.Rather than writing about what e-government could be, the authors take a reasoned look at the topic.The book is therefore neither overly optimistic nor is it hand wringingly critical.The international dimension is handled nicely in several chapters that extend the analysis to countries outside the US. Excellent guide with real strategy
Unlike most so-called strategy guides, which are really rehashes of the game manual, Rymaszewski's book outlines a legitimate strategy which players of CivII can use to succeed at the game on its hardest settings(Emperor and Deity). A solid Intermediate-wanting-to-win-at-Diety-Level book...
This is a fairly good book, but is rather thin for the price.It seems targeted to the Intermediate Civ2 player -- anyone who is looking to refing winning high-level play strategy will find it rather redundant. Sand Pirates pulls you in to the story and won't let you go.

This book is methodologically sound AND useful. Suggestions and advices are backed up by literature, it's not just the usual collection of "expert opinions". By the same token, suggestions and advices are sound and practical, not just impractical "erudite hypotheses". Perfect for pracademics!

Everything you need to consider for asynchronous learning
I have found this book to be very helpful if you are REALLY interested in doing asynchronous work online.The authors are leading edge thinkers about this subject who have earned themselves a place in the world consulting to people who want to do this.The problem is that many, many people only THINK they know what asynchronous learning is and until you actually experience it you won't know.Can't know something until you learn it.Rena and Keith have done a very good job of showing you EVERYTHING you need to know to get the job done.You can use it like a menu, take what you want and leave the rest alone.They spend a good deal of time trying to get people to understand the TRUE nature of an asynchronous world.They are sincerely at the leading edge.I think I know what leading edge is, I think I'm there experiencing true asynchronous learning now at the renowned Fielding Institute.Good book for your reference.You may not need all of it NOW but you will soon! ... Out of touch and out of date
I have to agree with one of my fellow reviewers - this book is way too technical and dry. With heavy, heavy chapters devoted to the development of the domain name system, trademark challenges, dispute case studiesetc., The Domain Name Handbook reads more like a govenment manual than an istructive and entertaining piece of writing. Ten out of ten for so much research but not many out of ten for entertainment value, (and, yes, even an instruction manual can be enetertaining).... Theirwell-linked pages will take you some interesting routes to wherever the real knowledge lies. Way too Technical
This book is way too technical and dry.Domain Names for Dummies treats the subject matter in a much more enjoyable and business-oriented fashion. Thorough, detailed delivering what it promises

Use of Internet for Non-business and non-workplace Scenarios
The comment on editor (using the reviewer's sacred space) is not out of place. Amazon has a different logic to treat people. In the previous incarnation amazon.com had an option for author's to comment. Now, I presume, it is turned into Guide.

When a change is needed
This book offers great insight into creating an information envionment within the company.I think that the numerous examples for real life companies provide credibility to his claims.However this is for people who are building and IT strucutre for scratch or are looking for a paradigm shift in how they do IT?If your IT envionment is not producing results this is a great place to start.It provides the theory to apply to real life situations.Understanding the necessity of Information Technology is essential for implementing results oriented systems.

Useful and informative book with new insights
I found this to be a useful and informative book with new insights, especially in the area of developing a wholistic view of an information enterprise.Most previous books seem to be limited to just MIS departments and ignore the fact that managing information is not something that just happens in a vacumn.I also found the diagnosis section to be useful and grounded in real work versus the "blackboard" consulting suggestions that sometimes comes from academics whose ideas are not grounded in real world experiences.

Good theme but more buzzwords and bull than practical advice
I was disappointed by this book. While its central thesis (that MIS should include human and political considerations, not just technical ones) is valid and needs championing, I found the text repetitive, lacking in clear advice, and full of buzzwords used to restate the obvious. Chirillo Strikes Again!
As a companion with his other title, Hack Attacks Revealed, John Chirillo gives us another great book on keeping our networks away from the prying eyes and stubby fingers of the those out there that don't need to be inside our networks, white or black hatters. The content is very well-structured, all concepts are supported by numerous examples so even if one doesn't understand the subject in it's depth he or she can find an answer to a specific real-world question. They say sequels are never better than the original. This may be somewhat true for this book. This is a VERY GOOD book. It's just that it's not as good as the first volume. It is a lot better...it is so much more geared for both sides of the IT spectrum...those of us up to our necks at the NOCs, and for the SOHO admin who needs juicy morsels for his knowledge palate... I have already started to implement Chirillo's countermeasures from this book, on top of the ones we are forced to use in a government system. Kudos to the author! ... Read more

Getting back to basics
Identity theft isabout the taking, not of your papers, but of cutting close to the bone of your very being. There are many other areas where we are being manipulated by the 1%'s (The one percent who have bought, signed, sealed, and delivered your government down the river).Sadly some of our so-called leaders are buying this corporate program against the will of "we the people".Here are some of the signs of the times just around the corner or already here.

It is real ,but helas it is not new !
I realized the control of all governments and business through power and money at the age of seven (in 1949) in History class (in another country!). You know: Aristocrats and Clergy owned all the lands and the riches and did no work, and the People, who worked very hard and paid heavy taxes. But then at age 7, I believed in Democracy overcoming the centuries of control and surveillance. There had been "people revolutions" afterall giving us this democracy. We had Republics, not Monarchies anymore.
This book WILL scare you...
As scary as this book is, I thank Derrick Jensen and George Draffin for writing the truth. Modern survalence is a threat to our freedom. Anybody who wants to know what those in power are doing to monitor us, or what they plan to do read this book. Not only is it full of facts, but Derrick helps you come to terms with what all of it means. People now-a-days dont have a huge problem with giving up some of their freedom for security. But what those in power are doing with this information is down right scary, and un-acceptable. It is a quick read too. It will bring up huge topics, define and break them apart, and open your eyes to modern technology; all in a days/weekends read. Overall great read. A+++ ... Read more

Hacking exposed: excellent books
This is a general comment regarding Hacking Exposed series. I owned Hacking Exposed (first edition) and then I moved to the more specific Hacking Exposed books, so now I've got Hacking Linux Exposed, Hacking Windows 2000 Exposed and hacking web Applications exposed. All those books absolutely worth it, do not hesitate to buy any of them.

Buy this book if you use windows
Don't run Windows without it.An in-depth windows security book written for those who do not understand geek.Easy to read and chocked full of info provided to save you from common (and not so common) windows sins.Definitely for the home and enterprise network user/admin.

Joe Trippi just doesn't get it
Trippi was one of the first to make use of the Internet in presidential campaign politics.Using Blogs, using MeetUp.com and the like, Trippi generated a grassroots movement for Howard Dean's campaign.
Accepting transparency
This was a good book connecting communication facilitated by the internet to the concept of organizational health.In a nutshell the internet can hurt or help an organization depending on its attitude about transparency.You can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Government Reading
I bought this book in around March, 2004. I have had it collecting dust since then. When I began looking for books to choose for my AP Government book project I figured why not choose this book. The only thing really knew about it was that it was about Vermont Governor, now Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean's failed attempt to capture the Democratic Parties nomination for President in 2004. Basically, this is a very well written and fun "historical" analyzation of the changes that occurred in 2004 by what politicians must now do to get elected. The reason I use quotations is because the author, Joe Trippi, a popular Democratic strategist and at one point Dean's campaign manager, makes it very clear that the events and changes that he describes in the book took place at his doing and by his campaign. This is a great book leading up to the 2006 Midterm elections and more importantly into the 2008 Presidential election. ... Read more

Didn't select this book for my course
I teach a computing ethics course at an area University.I did not select this book as my text when I reviewed texts for use in the Fall 2004 semester.I did choose Spinello and Tavani's new reader; but this book--like most of the predecessors Spinello has written--would drive my students nuts -- and they wouldn't know why. Bottom line: poorly written and not easy to read -- lots of tough sentence choices made.However, as with Spinello's other books, there are some points he makes that no other computing ethics texts' authors do make!So, I'll glean those points out of his text and present them to my students rather than force them to work their way through and around his prose.

Waste of time
This book was an incredible waste of time. I felt that the essays were a) far too dated (a rambling discourse on the dangers of cookies) or b) too out of touch (Rape in cyberspace was NOT a real rape in cyberspace, folks) The authors seem to be mainly scholars without a tech background than technical folks and I have to agree that the thesaurus was in heavy use during the writing of most of the these essays. Finally the book contains very little practical information on cyberethics. Not even a single case study.

CyberEthics = Mumbo Jumbo, not worth it
The content of this book is nothing short of a diaster! I had to read this book for my Ethics in the Information Age class here at the Rochester Institute of Technology and I must say that this is the worst textbook I ever had to read. It felt more like a highschool essay thats 155 pages long. The book is plagued with wordy sentences that can confused and bemuddle anyone who isn't an english major. Practically every sentence is littered with words that a bare few of us remember from the SATs (perhaps to lengthen the book?). The book's content doesn't provide a sense of contraversy about ethics in cyberspace. I beleive that he tried to stay neutral in the arguments but it only seemed to confuse me. The auther included a lot of references to other sources suggesting that he too doesn't even know a thing about Cyber Ethics, resorting to other people's works. The writng is too abstract and at most times I ended up rereading the book several times just to make sense of it. If I didn't need this for class, I recommend not buying this book. I am sure there are plenty of other well written Cyber Ethics books than this. ... Read more

Far from being a good book
I can recognize Dan Verton really did a lot of researching for writing this book but, despite all of it, it's a bad book. Excepting HD Moore I never saw any of those hackers interviewed. The tales are very unintersting. A mom from a friend of mine liked it and probably my mother will.

More fiction that reality.
This is one of the only books that directly talks about teenage hackers and one that tries to change the people's and the media's perception about a hacker. It does not, however, do a great job of conveying this message at least that is what I thought. The preface starts as a restatement of the well know Hacker's Manefesto authored by Mentor a decade ago. The book will not appeal to the technical audience, since it is mostly a novel. One issue that I really found serious in the book was that the message is contradicted. Although the book wants to convey the message that hacking is bad and people who practice it are normal teenagers who might be cutting your grass; the choice of characters was no where normal. The characters which are mostly from divorced parents, living with no water in their house, picking fights, getting arrested, and getting expelled from school; hardly the norm for the average teenager IMHO. A couple of technical inaccuracies were also spotted between the text and there a huge gap in the time line described between the day the hacker fiddled with his first computer and the day he started to break computers. Other than that issue the book is a good read although it does really appeal to my technological taste.

Hackers

Excellent textbook on E-commerce
I just received the new edition of Laudon and Traver's textbook on e-commerce and think its just great! I previously used the 2nd edition, which I also loved, and this new edition lives up to its predecessor. It contains all new and updated information and is extremely current. Its so well-written that it doesn't read like a textbook at all. I highly recommend it to anyone interesting in learning about e-commerce.

Good, but dated....
I have used this textbook for several years - while it is a good basic source of information, it badly needs updating and supplementation in several important areas: RFID is not mentioned; Mobile/hand set E-Commerce is covered at a surface level, Search Engine and major Portal marketing needs updating, and much of the data are 3+ years old - very old given the rapid changes taking place.
