Covers the Basics
This book provides a good introduction to computer forensics and covers most of the necessary basic information.Do not expect to read this book (or any of the other computer forensic books available) and be able to perform any sort of in-depth forensic analysis.It's good information for Sys Admins or tech-savvy home users.Those needing professional-level information for their job (computer security, law enforcement, etc) should look to 5-6 day courses that provide in-depth, hands-on training.
Readable and relevant - but US-centric
The introduction describes this book as a "complete introductory course in basic computer forensics and incident response" and that is indeed the case. It begins with an overview of computer forensics and incident response in Chapter 1 and progresses to legal considerations, obtaining and preserving digital evidence, system internals (mostly Windows although Unix is also discussed) and ends with analysis of real-world attacks and possible defences in Chapter 12. Press references and citations are used to give the big picture. All in all this is a book which I would recommend with two "buts": first, the author is writing from a US perspective for a US reader, presenting and discussing US-specific legislation and legal issues; while this would be of direct interest to our US-based brethren it is of no much use to anyone else. Second, platform-dependent coverage is mostly Windows, and although Linux/Unix get mentioned throughout the book the coverage of UNIX internals and forensics is not on par with Windows counterparts. Having said this, if you are in the US and are using Windows, do get this book - it is a readable and straight introduction to a complex and interesting field which becomes more and more important.

Fair introductory text, could be much better.
The author covers different aspects of incident response, but fails to go deeper in the matter.Read more

If you read mondo 2000, there are no surprises here, but...
If you have read Mondo 2000 before, then nothing in this book will be much of a surprise.In fact in 1998 this book is clearly retro.Still, to the new reader you will find much of the information interesting.The format is basically an A-Z of popular memes and cultural phenomena with a pseudo hypertext interface. A good intro to "digital divide" issues.
This book is somewhat dry, but does present alot of information and data concerning the digital divide in countries all over the world. For those unfamiliar with what the digital divide is, it is the lack of "information and communication technology" in developing countries and in underprivedged sections of developed countries.

More like a Pre Study Guide
This is a good book to use if you have never had any experience with security.It's kind of like a GSEC for Dummies.Read this book, and then take the SANS course, and use their materials to prepare for the exam.The SANS course is such an amazing program that really teaches you everything you need to know to not only create the company security policy, but how to set everything up and manage it.Logical and Hands on.

No real bang for your buck
I spent a few hours looking through this book at a local bookstore only to come away quite disappointed. Helpful, but not enough to attempt the exams
The Wiley book is well laid out and the writing is crisp and clear. Mike has a gift to explain a topic well in the minimum number of words and I hope he continues to write on information technology topics and I look forward to his future books.Read more

A concerned and conscienscious genius
Wiener was acutely aware of the promise and the danger of the new technolgies he was helping to invent. He worked very hard during the Second World War to help develop an anti- aircraft system which would make use of some of his mathematical and technical innovations. However the dropping of the Atomic Bomb turned him wholly against the military establishment and he became an insistent voice calling for regulation of military technologies.
Another Wiener Gem
Norbert Wiener was a child prodigy and Professor of Mathematics at MIT from 1919 until his death in 1964.He invented the science of cybernetics (look it up in the dictionary) and the guided missile but refused to help the military during the cold war.This volume includes an open letter published in the January, 1947 Atlantic Monthly magazine entitled "A Scientist Rebels" by Norbert Wiener.An introduction by Wiener biographer Steve J. Childish.Why reward a crook?
Well, the author is clearly a Chickenboner - the book is full of grammatical errors, especially toward the end. It also has major factual errors, as other reviewers have pointed out. (I skimmed it at the local library.)Also, he's clearly a criminal, since spamming is illegal in most jurisdictions, so I give it 1 star.

If Only He Did Not Play So Fast and Loose With facts
The Vikings from Monty Python's Flying Circus love SPAM so much, that the mere mention of the word has them break out in song, singing "Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!". For e-mail users, there are not many who would give the same response. We get it. We despise it. We wonder how many times we will get the same messages over and over again. But do we truly understand the machinations behind the scenes of the SPAM industry? It is this fundamental question that drives "Inside the SPAM Cartel: Trade Secrets From The Dark Side" (Spammer X, Jeffrey Posluns, Technical Editor, Syngress Press, 2004, 413 Pages). Written by an insider, the book provides detailed information and background but at times falters because of some very strongly stated opinions and facts that are just plain incorrect, as well as a very significant omission.
Interesting read as long as you don't throw it out the window
This book is basically 'how to spam' for newbies; or 'how to analyze spam', if you prefer. In any case, it's for technical users. If you are looking for a novel, check "Spam Kings" instead.

A visionary book
I regret that it took me so long to write this review, since I knew about the book before it came out. But since that time I have witnessed its premise proved true over and over again in the local political process. Something very special--new and not so new--is at work here. Today more than any time I can remember (including the worst of the '60s), responsible, hardworking citizens feel alienated and abandoned by the democratic process. What good can taking action do when such gigantic and powerful players are on the other side of the debate and show no respect for reasoned argument or even the rule of law? But pick a seemingly tiny, local problem--trash pickup or snacks in school vending machines or use of public parks--and here are issues for which my neighbors will go to meetings, pull out their wallets, and even endorse candidates. Cluster those interests in a vertical website, allow some accretion to take place, combine those online credit card micro-donations, and suddenly thousands of like-minded folks find out that they have clout--and lots to talk about not only on trash disposal, snacks, and recreation but also on sewers, land development, zoning, business licensing, taxation, representation, and war and peace.
One of a kind, worth reading
Not a perfect book (too much redundancy), but it's easy to read and covers things that other books do not. Here you get a look at how the Howard Dean campaign used the Web and its technologies, and you ALSO get a lot of insight into the use of social network software (SNS) by other kinds of organizations. Crumlish is a cheerleader, a Web believer, but he's not all yippee-yi-oh about everything (thank goodness).
Buy This Book...
Christian Crumlish's "The Power of Many" changed my life, but more over changed my view on how the living web affects organizations and community organizing.I work for a political organization and everything that Mr. Crumlish discusses in his book, I'm currently examining and seeing how it can be applied in a political context.For the most part, everything we've tried concerning community building and decentralization, has come with much success.

Didn't do much for me
This seemed to be a collection of essays that don't quite go anywhere. Maybe for somebody it's good but for me it felt like mix of artists and cultural studies types who don't really get online with some people who spend too much time online in mud's and other virutal 'worlds'.
