Well Worth The Effort
I am a relative newcomer to the security field. I have been adding books to my library to help me in my job.I picked up Defending your Digital Assets and was pleasantly surprised. The sections on Security Verificationof Systems and Networks and Cryptography were a rare read, and veryenjoyable. Too long, too general
This book does not live up to its title and subtitle.Very general material. For example, Denial of Service Attacks are in the news these days.Looking through the index, I find four references to DOS attacks.The first on page 45 tells me that DOS attacks can be costly.The secondon page 85 describes some previous DOS attacks, including one that tookplace 12 years ago.The next reference is on page 304 and is a historicaldescription of DOS attacks over the past three years.The last referenceon page 452 tells me that I should conduct DOS testing for my web server. Most of the book's content is similar.If this is useful to you, pleasebuy this book.For specific help in hardening your network, please lookelsewhere.

An Excellent Guide to Computer Security
As a neophyte I am tangentially aware of the importance of computer security, but reading "Defending Your Digital Assets" really brought the message home. Very Sensible and Interesting
Dan Gilmor here presents the attitude toward technology & journalism that any journalist will need to have if he/she will survive long in this new era. They need to embrace, or at least reckon with, the new media.

What is the Posthuman Future?
This is an important, impressive, and infuriating book that should be read by all those interested in the posthuman movement, the possibility of a cyborg future, and the nature of cyberspace. I agree with other reviewers that it is a penetrating analysis of the cultural revolution taking place in information and what it means for human (and posthuman) society. It is important as a powerful statement of the post-modern concern with embodiment and what that might portend for the future of humanity. It is impressive as a wide-ranging analysis of the inter-linkages of technology, culture, and the human body. It is infuriating because of the jargon-filled text and convoluted nature of the writing. That last criticism is one that is generic for post-modern works such as this, and certainly not a specific criticism of this book.
REDEFINING WHAT HUMAN IS -- into the 22nd Century
Yes, this is 22nd Century thinking today. I was fortunate enough to meet the author at a LA FUTURISTS SOCIETY meeting where she was a guest speaker. She looks ordinary-- like a college professor-type, speaks clearly but her writing is the extraordinary talent. She combines humanism and science to see how virtual bodies and informatics are influencing how we live, work and love. One of those books that yearns for you to write in the margins and put your notes in the back. Pages and pages of notes on my copy. No one will share this copy, don't even ask!!!! Not an easy read but well worth the journey. I love to read books in hours or days but this one took weeks (in between other reading) and it was well worth every minute, hour, day spent. Perfect book for this summer when the MACHINES ARE TAKING OVER on our screens at movies and television. The crossover from cybernetics to literature is what is so fascinating. I can't begin to summarize all that I learned and all the questions that it brought up for me to seek out more info. Belongs on every science and literature teacher's shelf. One of the books they should require for every engineer and techie at the beginning of their careers. Make way for the future!!!!!

Too full of jargon for me
This is probably one of the hardest books I have ever read--with no background in either philosophy or cybernetics, much of what Hayles discusses is just plain incomprehensible.I also found it difficult to accept the idea of humans already being "post-human."If you are interested in deep philosophical writings on technology and the human condition, with links to literature, read this.If you don't really care about the post-human, skip it. ... Accurate
As one who was there for this entire timeline, I can attest to the accuracy of Mueller's book (and the suggestion to read Crocker's account is misguided, as his account is about the most biased treatment available. Be warned on that as well). Be Cautious In Accepting This As a Historical Account
Before accepting too much of this author's version of history, PLEASE read Dave Crocker's review in "The Internet Protocol Journal" (December, 2002, pages 27-30).Dave lived through this era as a major participant and his review is well worth the read.

Excellent Work!
Mueller's work, recounting the Internet's Domain Name Wars, is entirely "interesting."Little is widely known about the history and origins of the Internet; what many think they know constitutes little more than mythology.Here is an excellent recount of the history of the Internet's development, and how conflicts with the naming space came to be.This is required reading for those interested and concerned with the potential success or failure of the Internet governance experiment.This is a continuation of a long history of excellent work by Mueller and is well recommended. ... It's ok for a newbie.
The great cover art plus the title led me to believe that exciting stories were inside.The most exciting chapter is the one you can read for free on the author's webpage, from there it doesn't get much better.
Documenting a new frontier of the war against terrorism
Author Steven Branigan is involved with many real incidents of high-tech crimes, and in High-Tech Crimes Revealed: Cyberwar Stories From The Digital Front provides details on how to find out what actually takes place in such crimes. Not for computer professionals
I was expected much more of this book. It is very general. It is meant for general public not for computer professionals. There is lots of repeating. 1200 pages of text with just a few pictures. Very boring. It is meant more for lawyers and philosophers than for other population. I don't recommend for system or network administrators.

Computer Security Handbook
This book is a must have for anyone working in the Information Assurance/Computer Security field."Big Blue" was written by experienced professionals who are considered experts in their field. The book contains sections pertaining to every conceivable aspect of Infomation Assurance. I am currently using this book in my Masters program at Norwich University, and will continue to use it as a reference for many years to come.Mich Kabay and Sy Bosworth are to be commended for consolidating all of this information into one superb book.Great job!! ... Excellent Collection for Computer-Mediated Communications
This is an excellent book collection of articles on CMC. It's especially a great resource for historical research into the early days of the Internet and the web. Although some topics may seem somewhat dated, nevertheless they are still applicable to the present date in terms of the nature of network mediated communications.Read more

Excellent text for an introduction to computer technology.
I have used the last three editions of this book and been impressed with the author's willingness to revise and upgrade it as the technology evolves and progresses.Despite a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, my students have been almost universally complimentary about it's value.The auxillary material offered online is excellent, aiding the beginners while still providing a challenge or two for the semi-experts bent on validating their knowledge. It is comprahesive and humanistic.
Usually a computer manual would bore the reader to death with its technicalities. This book isn't the case. Although it comprehends a great deal of technical aspects it focuses on the humanistic and ethical aspects of the technology as well. It also discusses both the technology past and its future.

Should be called Computers of your past, Badly written
Blah, Blah Blah, This book is far too wordy.Would make anyone who knew the slightest about computers fall asleep, Dull!Would hate for a newbie to pick up this book, would make you fear computing.Alot of info prestented is out dated and sometimes down right WRONG! Best thing to do with this book is put it by your bed and if you can't sleep read a paragraph and you'll be fast asleep. ... Read more
