5-0 out of 5 stars Got Mathematica?Buy This Book NOW!
The positive reviews were right on the money, this book is the best!It allowed me to start using Mathematica with ease, compared to the many hours of past frustration while working on optimizations.I fought endlessly, struggling to decipher the software's baroque navigation, cryptic errors, hostility to the user which borders on abuse - but now Mathematica and I are becoming great friends thanks to Heikki Ruskeepaa's wonderful tome.THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS BOOK!!!5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great Mathematica Textbook
While it is unlikely that there is a pure Mathematica course anywhere, the textbook for it already exists!5-0 out of 5 stars Solutions
To solve practical problems in Mathematica the navigator is very usefull. If you want to go deeper,"modeling nature" by Gaylord and Nishidate is a usefull guide. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great subject material, unevenly covered
I had mixed feelings reading this book. Some sections were so good I was saying, "Bravo, well done" while other sections were so bad, I felt sorry for anyone trying to learn by reading them. (E.g. Ch4 on frequency domain modeling.) The book covers extremely useful material, but in an uneven way. It will especially appeal to readers who want simplified discussions of the ideas rather than deeper more theoretical discussions. For example, crosstalk --one of the most important topics, is covered in a very light manner, recommending use of simulators to obtain accurate results. Compare this with the coverage of the same subject in the remarkable book "Electromagnetic Compatibility" by Clayton Paul. Now, that book is "advanced" and "magical". This book doesn't get into any deep discussions of the fundamentals. It says that current flows in a loop, and inductance is related to loop area. Simple enough.Yet, how do we explain the inductance of the pin of an IC package, which is definitely not a loop? How is the energy-based definition of inductance used by simulators related to this simple definition? Even more fundamental, given that voltage can't be defined in a region where the magnetic field is changing, how come we can use the concept of voltage? (Read Paul Clayton for discussing all these concepts in great detail.) 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have reference for ALL digital design engineers
After ploughing through this book, I found it to be a treasure trove of useful information. It's well layed out, and well explained. As with their first "black magic text", it's full of helpful hints, guides, and rule'o'thumbs that will get you up to speed quickly so you can apply them and get expected results from your design. Well done Mr Johnson and Mr Graham, another excellent reference! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a to be updated
Used it as a text book, mainly a reference. With communications rapidly changing it must be difficult to continually update. It is a fair background book, but it doesn't offer much else

2-0 out of 5 stars Book is too dated to be effective in emerging technologies.
Although updated in 1994, most of the text material discusses old mainframe and terminal applications and was likely written during earliereditions of the text.Reading it did not provide a good basis for the telecommunications area, because it is so dated. In its day, it must have been a great text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering, Clear, and Consise
I have to say that this book is simply amazing.I have searched the longest to clearly understand not just about PKI, but actually how to implement it, and was always referred to tombs of mathematical theory and such. This book demystifies PKI infrastructure in clear and concise explanations (but not overkill though), and has a lot of material on how to practically implement a variety of PKI architectures that can fit small businesses to huge enterprise corporations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bset book I've seen on PKI and certificate management
Brian Komar tackles, what I've seen countless other authors refer to as a difficult to understand subject matter. It appearantly took a whole team at Microsoft to explain it to him, but it looks like he got it right.Of the many books I've read that address certificates and PKI this is the only one I've seen that presents a complete picture, where I didn't walk away wondering... but how does this part of it work, or why did they do that this way.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best PKI implementation guide
This is by far the best reference out there for understanding PKI in general and implementing Microsoft Windows Server 2003 CA infrastructure. Komar's depth of knowledge and breadth of experience clearly shows. Found the description of CAPolicy.INF files and sample files and scripts in this book extremely useful - that alone saved me a lot of time. And it doesn't end there...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advanced Organizer
First, I'm not a DBA but I install, maintain, and use SQL Server 2005 in lab and workgroup settings.
2-0 out of 5 stars First 3 chapters looks promising. After that it is useless
During reading the first 3 chapters. this book was very promising. Thethe author kept repeating himself "I will show you how to do this, to do that". But after the first 3 chapters, his writing becomes dull. Nothing useful to go on reading. Maybe He was rushing to publish this book or the style that he prepared to go into his writing just died out.Whatever reason, one thing I learned from this book is: What a SQL Server DBA is supposed to do on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. I read so many 5 stars books going into details about writing code to backup, restore, scheduling...etc. But those books forget one point: What a SQL Server DBA is supposed to do on a daily basis. Maybe it is not important for an experienced DBA but it may be important for other I.T guys who want to be DBA. That's why we read books for.
2-0 out of 5 stars Careful
A pet peeve i have w/ Microsoft books is they just mirror the help files. This admin guide is not much more than regurgitated help files. I was hoping for some useful examples, closer to real life problems & solutions. Not there. Plz use the help files in Books Online to look up topics THEN examine the same topic in this book at a local bookstore BEFORE buying it. ... Read more

This is the best pocket reference book that you can get. Its been really helpful to me in a lot of occasions when you just know that there is a command to do it but just cannot remember what the command is. Would definitely say a must to anybody starting or already working with Unix/Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicholas RodgersReview Is for the Wrong Book
The book that Nicholas purchased is a training manual for WEB I version 6.5. It is a Power Point presentation that is designed to self-train or to train others. It comes with the presentation on the CD so it can be presented through a projector.
1-0 out of 5 stars This is a Powerpoint presentation printed and bound.
This book looks like someone made a really long power point presentation and printed it out and had it made into a book. It could probably be useful for a teacher, but for a student it's not very useful. In addition, you must have full access to the businessobjects software in order to use the examples. In addition, this book has absolutely no coverage of the XI R2 web/java interface whatsoever.

4-0 out of 5 stars A keeper
As a person that went from an occasional BusinessObjects user to a power user I found this reference book to be concise, well organized and with very good illustrations. Thanks to this book I was able to flatten the learning curve and create professional reports and assist other users in a vey short amount of time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from the Core series! Awsome job!
This is an excellent book for all Security Practitioners. FromIdentity Managment to Mutli-factor athentication this book provides examples and clear description of many important concepts. The bookcovers enterprise patterns for access contol, federatation and identity management. Like the J2ee patterns, I see this book being an important/practical addition for the security community.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic security book for java guys
I picked this book to read about using smartcard and biometrics in j2ee application. I am really amazed to see, this is the only book in the market to illustrate how to put together all three factors of authentication in a j2ee application. More compelling, the authors did a terrific job to cover every possible security option that adds value to j2ee application. The patterns and best practices for application security architecture and design strategies for the presentation tier, business tier, and Webservices tier of j2ee platform are very promising and helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for All Security Architects
I have found all the Sun "Core" Java books to be at cut above, but this one differs in that while obviously Java-centric, much of the patterns dicussed are relevant to all development platforms. I'd recommend this book to developers and architects of web services and web applications regardless of their preferred development environment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference for Database Developers Moving to SQL 2005 From 2000
We have been heavy users (both as developers and administrators) of SQL Server 2000 since it came out in 2000.We were anxious to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 and did so in early 2006.For the first couple of months we largely utilized SQL 2005 in the same way that we had done with SQL 2000 (with the exception of using the new Management Studio) and did not really exploit the new features of SQL 2005.This book definitely opened our eyes to many of the new features of the SQL 2005 database and we are using many of those features in our current development efforts.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
If you're looking for a "what's new in SQL Server 2005" this book covers that.If you're looking for a reference book on the product, that goes into how to configure or upgrade from an earlier version--Keep Looking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent SQL 2005 Coverage
This book does an awesome job of hitting everything that is new in SQL 2005.There is a lot to cover so it doesn't go into deep depth, but it does give you a good overview and points you in the right direction to find more information out on a particular topic by making sure you have a great introduction. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
To say that I was very disappointed in this book is a major understatement.I wish there was a zero star category or a negative star category.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written - not helpful
Do not buy this book. The author is in no way an expert on QuickBooks. Book covers only a few basic functions...even the QuickBooks product startup guide show you how to do more than this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info, but almost too complex to be helpful
One buys Dummies books to shortcut learning down to only the most effective and productive knowledge needed.Quickbooks itself is a lot to learn, and so is this book.It has been a trial-and-error journey becoming proficient with Quickbooks, and I have opened the Dummies book several times only to find that the Quickbooks Help option was more supportive. The book is chocked full of information. So, if you have the time to sit with the book and the program, it may be useful for you.If you don't have a lot of time to actually use Quickbooks like me, this may not be the book to buy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference guide for designing your SQL Server database
This guide not only provides references on SQL Server syntax, but also contains a brief review of best practices with database design. Includes all normal forms with database normalization, indexing, and data integrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars BestIT Book I Ever Read
This book is an amazingly clear and concise book, especially for the "non-gurus" among us.The explanations of general topics like normalization, the history of markup languages (in the XML section) are so well written you could give them to management and even they would understand what you are doing (maybe that's not such a good idea).Full of tidbits like why transaction logs grow so much faster than data files.Nielson writes about SQL Server 2000 as used in the real world, not just as an interesting piece of technology.Bravo!I would give it 10 stars if I could.I leave nitpicking to the gurus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Philosophical (Textbook) exposition of InfoSec
If you're looking to get down into the nitty-gritty of infosec, for ways and methods of securing networks and systems, then this probably isn't the book you need. This is a textbook and so it overs a fairly high level viewpoint, even philosophical approach, to infosec. The granualarity just isn't there for the practising person to gain much from this in a substantive way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too wordy
Having to go thru some of the data mining such as CART, I find the book rather wordy.Sometimes, it takes a couple of readings to understand, too many termiologies.I think a lot of stuff might be better illustrated with mathematical formulae rather than words or both. For e.g., I was trying to understand what is surrogate variable, getting a big picture from the English is okay, but to actually compute it, I find information not as clear. This book is written in a way ... seem to be theoretical, and yet not rigorous enough.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very complete
This book is a very interesting book to learn the main statistical approach of data mining. It's clear and full of examples. If you go a Stanford data mining website you will find all the courses and exercises linked to the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE ACCOMPANYING CD????
Beware, the book may be good, I just start reading it, but I can't look at the examples from the "accompanying cd" because Amazon hasn't made it available to me. I've written them 3 times and still no answer. Buy this book from the bookstore. Also, this ebook is very restrictive. I don't know if I can view it from other computers and it only allows me to copy 10 selections in 7 days, after that no more cutting and pasting.....beware of the limitations. I'm an engineer who uses Project in my work and this book has been a great help. Every time I've had a problem getting the software to do what I wanted this book has provided a clear and consise explanation that helped me get through the problem. I'd recommend it to anyone who uses Project for major projects and doesn't have time to waste finding an answer on how to get the software to do what you want it to.

1-0 out of 5 stars e-books a nightmare, beware the pdf e-book format!
I recently bought this book in electronic format to save time with delivery and then also to give e-books a try. Afterall, they have benefits, like little storage requirements, portability, you can search them through, etc..Read more

Those who are reading this review on my blog must be wondering if I've ditched my Notes/Domino roots and migrated to the dark side. The answer is no.I just wanted to know a bit more about InfoPath. To do that, I got a copy of Beginning InfoPath 2003 by F. Scott Barker. If I were inclined to start working with the product, this would offer a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you work heavily with T-SQL...
Buy, borrow, or STEAL THIS BOOK!
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who wants to be an expert using TSql
This textbook on TSQL covers not only the basics such as DML, DDL and basic data types, but also talks about advanced topics such as Transactions,Stored procs, Triggers and Performance tuning in very good detail. If you are ever thinking of writing a SQL Server sproc or an app layer on top of it, read this book first.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners or for a review of SQL
This book has no coherent structure, but is a conglomeration of tips. Many of the coding examples use fairly complex SQL without explaining it.The join section is laughably short. It is probably most useful for someone already experienced in SQL who can read through it to pull out "tips".I have been away from SQL for a few years and wanted to brush up and this absolutely was not the book to buy. What a waste of money. ... Counter Hack
5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
I highly recommend Counter Hack Reloaded to anyone who wants to better understand the technical details of computer hacking / security / defense.
5-0 out of 5 stars When the best defense is a good offense
The second edition of Ed Skoudis and Tom Liston's COUNTER HACK RELOADEDreturns a primary system administrator's resource to new levels, continuing the attack on destructive hacks with a counter-hack guide which remains useful because over half the material in this edition has been revamped and updated to reflect the latest hacker techniques. Typical hacker methods and tools are surveyed, new 'anatomy of an attack' analyses are detailed, and even a new section on wireless hacking appears. COUNTER HACK RELOADED: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO COMPUTER ATTACKS AND EFFECTIVE DEFENSES is one of the best on the market - and a most for any network administrator facing tday's many security challenges. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad not good
In general the book is ok. The author needed to make more research in some areas and not made use only of his own experience.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tiny font
Excellent book, but the font is VERY small which makes reading difficult even though I do not have vision problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!!
I have this book and I can say it is the best SQL Server book I have ever read. It may even be the best Development/Computer book I have. Every chapter is easy to read, detailed and concise. The coverage is phenomenal. I use this for reference quite a bit. The only thing that is missing is more detail on DTS... but that is a book in itself. ... Read more
