5-0 out of 5 stars Hardware and Software in One Book
This is a very well done book on a very topical subject. USB mass storage has gotten so inexpensive that its use in dedicated embedded systems has become almost a given. And here is one book that talks about all aspects of putting such a system together.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excelent introduction this unique topic
This book covers two areas of computer technology: creating USB based mass storage systems, using either rotating (disk) media or flash storage. It offers guidance and examples for each of these with a focus on the special requirements and limits of embedded hosts that access USB storage devices.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date .... not useful anymore
this books needs two things desparately:
4-0 out of 5 stars It's very practical
It's a very practical, very well informed book. The author quoted
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful at large but confusing here and there
Even four years after its publishing date, I've found Sterne's book on Web Metrics helpful. For the most part, he's focused on business metrics applied to the web, which shields his work from obsolescence for the most part. However, when he gets into topics such as CRM and also in other places throughout the book, it feels as if he could have used a bit more editing, as he rambles and jumps between topics in a way that is more confusing than helpful. It deserves four stars, loosing one star over his occasional rambling. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting cons, but repetitive and ego-trippy
Mitnick has his own reputation to live up to with this book, which sets a pretty high bar for the audience who knows him as the "World's Most Notorious Hacker."Unfortunately, while he knows the material cold, his skills as an author are less stellar.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book
This book seriously highlights the stupidity of people in the world. It shows how clever people go very far by asking basic questions to get what and where they want. The samples are entertaining and worth reading. This is some great education for the naive people of the world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but weak in writing skill and quality of advice
I enjoyed the first more-than-half of the book which dealt with various kinds of social engineering attacks. Each was at least plausible and usually interesting.I was constantly aware, however, that the titles of the chapters only vaguely correlated to the examples given: there must be a better way to structure the content (possibly starting with defining various kinds of attacks then identifying those techniques as they come up in the examples.)

First, this book does _NOT_ have a installation walk through...YES!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Read Info For Linux Admins
The Hacking Exposed books have set the bar for this genre of security book. Hacking Linux Exposed - 2nd Edition doesn't fail in meeting that bar as well. If you've read Hacking Exposed - 4th Edition and think this book can't tell you anything you don't already know- think again. For those who administer Linux boxes this book provides an in-depth look at specific hacks and vulnerabilities unique to the Linux operating system and the accompanying fixes and workarounds to protect yourself. The book is overflowing with examples and sample commands that users can immediately put to use to better understand the risks and how to mitigate them. Hacking Exposed is a must-read for security- this book is a must-read for Linux security.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't have this book? You're BEGGING for trouble...
When I first starting using Linux systems and putting them online I had NO idea what sort of grief I was in for.The reason for that grief: I had NO clue how to 'harden' a system or what that term even meant.By not knowing that I put upsystems that were quickly exploited by script kiddies and SPAM houses looking for open relays to use for SPAM and for 'zombies' to use in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.I bought this book, read it, and haven't had those problems since. If you are going to do *anything* with Linux on the internet then GET THIS BOOK NOW.Unless, of course, you *want* to have your computers destroyed on a weekly basis... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good summary of storage virtualization
This book describes the basics of modern storage virtualization at an introductory level. The reader should have a basic technical background but does not need know much about storage. There are fourteen chapters each of which covers one aspect of storage. Topics include: host, server and fabric based virtualization. Additional topics such as various types of file systems as well as protocols such as Fibre, NFS, iscsi are also covered. The main drawback is the lack of details. Each topic is covered in about ~10-15 pages which is barely enough to scratch the surface. Therefore anyone who is seriously interested in a particular topic will have to find other material to really dig in. On the positive side, the presentation is simple enough that the book may be read rather quickly. I would recommend it to anyone who is getting into storage and wants a summary of all the major topics in an easy to read book.

4-0 out of 5 stars goes behind the storage abstractions
Clark gives straightforward explanations of the issues involved in storage virtualisation. He shows that there are various ways to present to an operating system or user data storage capacities. In a functionally abstract manner, that permits a modular architectural design. This abstraction is crucial in giving a simple and logical view of the memory or disk. So that the applications level developer need only deal on a very simple level with read and write to the medium.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very well written intro to storage virtualization
A concise and well written book on storage virtualization. Starting with explanation of file meta data and storage meta data the author uses good illustrations to dive reasonably deep and explain the concepts behind each mode of virtualization starting from server down to switch, appliance and array-based virtualization. The book is not wordy nor does it waste time on pointless rambling on the history of storage networking etc..I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in truly understanding the concepts behind this upcoming technology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The other cluster flavor
Clusters, like many things, come in various flavors. These can be roughly stated as `high throughput', `high performance (HPC)', and `high availability'. The "Linux Enterprise Cluster" is a good read for those looking for the `high-availability' cluster flavor, for perhaps a mission-critical computing resource. There is thus more emphasis on fail-over and service request handling than, for example, MPI, exacting operation calculations, and HSI maximizing techniques typical of HPC endeavors. This is not to say this book is not applicable to the other cluster types. Could you do with a chapter on SystemImager? How about Ganglia? Rsync & SSH? Building a kernel? All this step-by-step? Awesome! I was building an HPC cluster at the time, and found this a good book for drilling into deeper cluster software infrastructure details while at the park or waiting for a class to start. It was however sparse on hardware details and proper supporting infrastructure, but no book under 10 pounds is going to cover everything so be prepared to read a lot. I did not evaluate the included CD-ROM, which is loaded with goodies, because I simply downloaded the packages from the Internet as needed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Explanations and Recipies
If you want to build any HA cluster, this book is for you. The author has the ability to write from entry level to advanced Linux admin skillsets. His recipies for HA and LVS clusters are complete and realistic. We all know there are few Linux books we read from cover to cover. This is one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for small clusters
Karls book seems for me the perfect book for small clusters. He describes every single install and configuration aspect I could possible think of.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring junior high school level book.
All the chapters constantly drag on and on like a boring novel. The book is somewhat like a director trying to strech a 50 minute movie into a 2 hour epic. There are few terms in bold and tons of useless garbage in between that is just opinions and junk you don't need to know. This book is more like the type of book you will find in junior high school levels.Like a mother talking to a child type of writing quality. There are many other outstanding books on the market.Don't waste your time purchasing this book.Anyway, this is a school textbook, not a reference book that you would keep at your workstation or library. Why would you buy a textbook and not a "computer" type of book. How can this be a second edition? Many typos have not been edited.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Computer Book I've Read
The Second Edition (2002) of Web 101 is a superb book. I respectfully disagree with the Amazon.com review's opinion that the book is "not really" a good value. It is expensive, but worth it. It is very well written, with lots of facts and examples to back up the author's points. The layout of the book may be the best I've ever had the pleasure to see.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Introduction To Text Retrieval Systems
A wonderful feature of this book spans out practicality for various topics including compresion algorithms and theory, document and imaging system and information retrieval. On my personal interest, the authors highlight a vast list of not only the theory but present it in a simple common sense logic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Information Retrieval
Managing Gigabytes is the best book out there on information retrieval. If you're interested in implementing your own IR system, there's nothing available that comes close to this book. But the book is good not just because it's the only one out there: the writing is excellent, the algorithms are presented clearly and explained well, and the coverage is thorough.Additionally, the coverage of compression algorithms is the best I've found in any book. All algorithms and pseudo-code in the book are presented clearly enough such that any competent programmer should be able to implement them.If all else fails, however, the free downloadable source code for the mg system can fill in any gaps.5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Thing Is: It's the Only One
This is the only book there is that will actually teach you how to build an information retrieval system (aka search engine). It discusses all the algorithms and tradeoffs, and comes with free downloadable source code to experiment with. Some of the material is standard, but covered in more implementation detail here than anywhere else. Some of the material is novel: you won't find better coverage of compression unless you hand-assemble twenty research papers, and reverse-engineer them to figure out how they're implemented. But with "Managing Gigabytes", it's all here. (Although, after a particularly envigorating discussion of how to string together a bunch of techniques to compress their corpus and save a couple 100MB, I did a check and found you could buy 512MB of RAM for less than the cost of the book.Knowledge is Power, but sometimes a little cash is more powerful.)The only negative is that this book is not called "Managing Terabytes", as the first edition promised/threatened it might be.RAM and disk are cheap, but not that cheap, and for now terabytes (and sometimes petabytes) are managed only by NASA, Google, and a few others.I can't wait to see the third edition! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great Buy

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice capstone set for the S+ exam
I liked these books, they got right to the point. Questions were good also, with good explanations. I found this set to be the best for someone with a security background to prepare for the exam (personally, I have a CISSP), or as a capstone following more traditional preparation for new security folks. I took the S+ exam because I got an email from CompTIA saying I could get a shirt if I took & passed the exam before the end of December 2005. A shirt! Well...count me in!: )

This book is a great book to test your knowledge for the Security+ exam. I bought this along with the 'All-in-One Security+ Exam Guide' and found the two together to contain a wealth of information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book!
This is probably the worst book I have ever read. Granted the topic can be very vague and confusing at time, the author makes little attempt tp explain adequately the concepts.
3-0 out of 5 stars Purchased wrong edition
Shipping was fast. However, the edition of the book was never stated, and I assumed it was the 4th edition since the covers looked the same. However, the book I received was the 2nd edition.I can notice some very subtle differences in the covers of the 2nd & 4th editions, but at the time, it looked the same to me.*** My advice is to clearly state on the description what edition the book is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good theory, more advanced
In my opinion, 70% of this book is theory.I don't understand how anybody can use this book as a continuous guide. The first couple of chapters of the book are great, but it goes down hill from there. This book is good for those that want to gain a deep understanding of DBMS and how they optimize queries or things of that nature, but this book should not be used for an undergrad course. This book explains alot of concepts behind DBMS, concepts that might be nice to know, but will not benefit you in your database implementation. There are a couple of chapters dedicated to SQL, but that is it.And to be honest, it did not help me much at all.I agree with another person who made the comment if your course uses only this book, drop it because it will probably be a waste of time, unless you are interested in the inner workings of a DBMS. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of storage networking
This is one of the best books I've encountered in many years. What I like about it:
5-0 out of 5 stars Succinct overview of Storage Networks
A very good translation of the german text. There are a few areas where the translation falters but overall excellent. This is not an implementation book. It's meant to be a general overview of the Storage Network universe. The authors focus on Fibre Channel SAN which is still dominant in large corporations and gaining popularity among mid level companies. The book does a good job of explaining the plus/minus of all the competing standards as well as giving an infrastructure map of each of the technology setups. If you want to understand the ABCs of Storage, your journey should start with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, helpful, written well, a must for your collection on CMS
This book is a required textbook for my online graduate publishing course at Pace University. I have enjoyed the book and the wealth of information it provides. It is informative and written well for anyone to understand. The examples and diagrams are terrific as well as the snippets from people in the business industry using CMS.At the end of my course in May 2006, this book will definitely be on my bookshelf and used on the job. I highly recommond this book for anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a worthwhile purchase
Good book. It's clear, very well organized and planned book. It's a complete guide and knowledge repository for those who want to start understanding the Content Management paradigm and to the experienced ones who want to improve their skills as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic treatise on Content Management.
Even the smallest Web site requires some form of content management. File system directories and informal sharing across publications are sufficient for small sites. But as the size and level of activities grow, informal content management begins to cost too much and take too long. At that point, a Content Management System may become necessary to help organize and automate the process. The decision to automate is normally based on 4 criteria: content size, change frequency, number and diversity of contributors and, the number of publications (channels). A Web Publishing project where content is distributed over more than 1000 pages will likely requires an automated Content Management System (CMS). The process of implementing a CMS is a major project in itself. So, depending on your work environment you may not need to concern yourself with a CMS at this point. Should the need exist, then this book will provide all the required information and more. It is meant for people tasked with designing and implementing CMS, and some filtering will need to be done by the reader interested in only specific aspects of Content Management. A well structured and easy to read work of encyclopedic proportion. This book is best kept as a reference and used when needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comment on 'CSI' review
This is not really a review but a comment on one of the other reviews.I noticed that the same review for "Computer Sci Instructor 'CSI'" appears for both the 3rd and 4th editions.I don't know if his review was only entered for one of the editions, but that Amazon erroneously entered it in both editions.Perhaps, he copied the same review for both editions since he felt the same comments applied to both.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of content - but very wordy and reader unfriendly
I had adopted this book to teach Distributed Systems to a senior level undergrad class. I think I may have made a mistake, not knowing before hand how hard it would be for me to read this book (despite having some background in distributed systems). The students constantly complained of it being too "Wordy" and "vague".Few generic figures and mostly all text that seemed to be a rehash of several IEEE/ACM papers without giving sufficient examples or explanation. Some times, the authors did indeed explain some concepts with examples. At other times, they just left the concepts in vague mathematical notation or arcane definitions expecting the readers to make sense of it.While the english is grammatically correct, it is written in such a stuffy academic style that I found myself having to read most paragraphs twice or thrice before I could figure out what the author was trying to say.At times, I was thinking the authors should have been lawyers instead. (If the authors are reading this .. please consider the maxim: A picture is indeed worth a thousand words).A side note: I am not averse to reading academic papers. I do that all day long. But I just don't think a textbook should be written in that style.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for distributed systems.
As the awareness of resource sharing and cooperation has increased, distributed systems have gained unprecedented attention. However, designing a practical distributed application is a demanding and complicated task. Coulouris et al. have excellently addressed this design issue with Distributed Systems: Concepts and Design. This book covers various topics from fundamental concepts and principles of distributed systems to some advanced topics, such as replication and distributed multimedia systems. For each topic, the authors provide information in sufficient depth and breadth for readers to conduct further research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for Security Professionals
If you really are looking for theory to be able to have a better consulting experience or drive your company into deeper waters regarding security this is your book. For students starting on this I would notrecommend it, you may fall asleep during your first couple of pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good material but ....
I'm not an English guru nor a native language speaker; but I feel bad when seeing typo or grammer errors in a professional book. I have no idea how did some of poorly phrased senteses made it through the 3rd edition!! It's just a bad feeling when reading such book versus a simple fluent web page on the same material. Also the outlining of the book is a little tricky. Most chapters are over 60 pages and they need better outlining. Other than that, the authors know what they are talking about and made a good effort to sort plenty of introductory materail in a text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent condition
The book was received in good condition, during the period of time requested, and as promised, it is a US edition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides a solid overview of JDE
The book provides a great background for the JDE newcomer. The book has sections that are good for the executive sponsor and transitions into detail good for those actually integrating. While not something that would ensure a successful implementation, the book covers a significant number of key issues and risks that should help companies through the implementation process.

3-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable introductory textbook
I was frankly expecting more of this book. The author superficially covers the basics of the OneWorld software architecture and the very basic of navigation and usage.Being titled "Implementing", I was expecting to find real life information on hardware sizing, what to do and not to do to successfully implement the software. There was not much more than what you could find in J.D.Edwards documentation and available Knowledge Garden papers. Also, anybody who has worked with this software knows that there is still a lot to do to make it as reliable as marketing hype pretend it to be.One would expect some objectivity from a third party, as good as the software really is.Wise advices like waiting for implementing ESU and service pack, making sure you have the appropriate skills around to do an implementation are slipped away from the content. If you have not worked with OneWorld before, and are planning to learn and implement the software, this is an acceptable introductory textbook. However, if you are looking for more in-depth coverage of real life issues with this software, you will have to look some place else. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Source/Reference/Reminder In DRP
The content of book is reviewed after an unmemorable day, 11 Sept., it does not mean DRP is reviewed from the beginning and changed due to this incidence, however, for me, after reading part of this book, I understood the importance of DRP for any kind of companies whatever it is a small one or big one, crisis management and contingency planning are necessary.5-0 out of 5 stars Expand IT people's view on DR/BC planning
