5-0 out of 5 stars THE BULLETPROOF FIREWALL!!
Are you getting ready to take your Check Point certification exam? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Robert Stephens, Barry Stiefel, Stephen Watkins, Simon Desmeules and Eli Faskha, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that is the perfect reference for anyone migrating from earlier versions of Check Point's flagship firewall/VPN product; as well as, those deploying VPN-1/FireWall-1 for the first time.
5-0 out of 5 stars All the new NGX features
Any familiar with prior versions of Check Point's firewall program and newcomers to CheckPoint alike will find CONFIGURING CHECK POINT NGX VPN-1/FIREWALL-1 an important overview of all the new features in NGX. From working with the SmartView Tracker tool and understanding how a Check Point VPN-1 Pro Gateway administrator evolves to work into network security to handling authentication and integrity issues globally, everything from building the platform to licensing is covered in detail. An excellent survey of all the enhanced features and changes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
'Configuring Check Point NGX VPN-1/Firewall-1' by Robert Stephens is another good book by Syngress for IT Professionals.Syngress has really focussed on IT setup and configuration for it's latest releases of books and they have done a solid job.Packing over 600 pages of material into this guide, if you use Checkpoint at your job, you would be wise to pick up a copy of this book for your desk at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and enlightening read
Ira Winkler's "Spies Among Us" finally cleared my head on the subject of ... oooh, so horrible ... " cyberterrorism." Intuitively, when you read about "cyberterrorism" you instantly think "what a load of bull", but the amount of press and "research" that you see coming about it, makes one wonder. As a result, I was somewhat confused about the subject.Until now! Ira's book finally cleared it: at this stage, "cyberterrorism" is positively, absolutely, 100% "bull product." Here is why: computer failures are an accepted thing. "Everybody knows" that computers "are flaky", and might crash at any time, taking your work (or a billion-dollar Martian probe :-)) with them. Thus, computers do a pretty good job damaging themselves and things around them, and, thus, people will not be terrified if it happens due to malicious actions by whatever cyber-terrorists. Now, the above obviously doesn't cancel the use of computers and the Internet by the terrorists, but this is not what is commonly understood as "cyberterror."
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Right On Target
In the first couple of chapters, I realize that this is not a novel of spy vs.spy, but an actual resource book that makes 100 % sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wake up managers!
Read this book to appreciate what is (or should be) keeping your Information Security Manager awake at nights, and to understand what he/she probably wants (or ought) to do about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What, you don't own this?
You should buy this book. Then you should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great overview, but a little thin on details.
This book is an excellent comprehensive introduction to computer security from policies to technologies. However, as pointed out by other reviewers, the depth of content when it comes to specifics is rather shallow, but one must take into account that to discuss each of these topics in depth would require volumes of text, and much of the specific information can easily be found in texts devoted specifically to those individual topics or from online sources.Given the breadth of information discussed, I think it strikes a very effective balance in displaying the information necessary to understand the basics of computer security.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good upgrade to a classic
This second edition has all the qualities the first edition had 10 years ago: Their writing is clear, they provide a sober assessment of the costs & benefits of various services (as opposed to other reviewers, I don't think the authors had much of an anti-Microsoft bias, just a realistic perspective on where Windows products are regarding security). The book is still fairly compact and it comes with an excellent biography and pointers to security software. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The bible of RMAN
A full study about RMAN.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on market for RMAN and Backups
As a production DBA this is the best book so far since Velpuri wrote the original Oracle 8i backup and recovery book a decade ago. I like this a lot and together with the Oracle documentation, setting up and using RMAN is a snap compared to the pain it used to be to stumble with RMAN before. Throw away logical backups and hassle of SQL backups and use the power of RMAN. I was able to get cooking in a few hours with a good RMAN setup for our test and production database environments. Together with the Oracle 10g RAC book you have the complete knowledge to be a true HA Oracle DBA.

4-0 out of 5 stars GoodStuff, Piece of Art
I read this book when I was working on my OCP 9i track in 2004. At that time I needed more information about Backup and Recovery and especially Recovery Manager (RMAN)and I ended up borrowing this book from the library. I then put my exam study guide aside and finish this book. The book is really good. The part that I like the most is the book gives you scenarios that are easy to understand and it shows RMAN in different environment interacting with other storage media. I will definitely recommend this book. A book like this one does not come along very often. I am planning to buy my own copy soon. Great Job RG I give 4 stars. ... Read more

Well that was my feeling after I browsed through it - if you are an SAP user then you must be investing a good part of your time using SAP - then you must have a live SAP system and some users manual. Then why do you need this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars SAP R/3

I recommend this books to everyone who are new to SAP R/3 and are just starting to learn the system. This is a very good BEGINNER'S book and teaches you how to navigate around the SAP R/3 interface.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - But now getting obsolete
If SAP would publish made easy guides for all their modules they could kick the worlds software a**...This book is as good as the best 'step-by-step' books put out by Microsoft. Why SAP can't put out documentation as-good-as Microsoft is beyound me...they are really missing the boat (or perhaps the point of poor documentation is a full-employment scheme for expensive consultants...Note: if you think the online help provided with SAP is any help, think again, it's for the most part useless...SAP help screens look like they were designed by 'educational experts' who wring any sense of meaning or context from a subject to derive an abstraction which provides only 'when you click this, this screen comes up' duh...I know that, so what does it mean?...what does the screen info do? How does it fit into the context?...ya gotta hope there is a book, or hire a consultant)
3-0 out of 5 stars Has potential needs more indepth content
This book follows the traditional format of SAP Made Easy Guides. It covers Authorizations fairly well but still lacks the complete content that Authorizations Administrators need. 75% of the Authorization features arecovered, hopefully the next version will include all the features. Yes, thebook is useful, but not needed if you already have an excellentunderstanding of the tool in prior versions of SAP

5-0 out of 5 stars The secrets of Wireless Hacking
An excellent resource both for the novice as well as for the advanced user of WLAN. If you work professionally with wireless LAN you should own this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I think everything that needed to be said has been said by Richard. This is an excellent book for those who want to get their hands dirty with Wireless Security. One of the areas in IT that will never die down, not anytime soon at least, is security. IT security is especially HOT right now, and a lot of companies are paying more attention to what they should have years ago. In my home city, Philadelphia, there is a project called Wireless for Philly that is supposed to bring wireless connection to everybody. Now, while people see that as just another development in this great city, I look at it as an opportunity for people who are smart enough to protect this kind of network. This book does the job. I am going to suggest that if you know you are not going to have time to dedicate to this book, don't pick this book up. You're better off! Because if you do pick this book up, it's going to be hard to put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars *The* Source for Wireless Security Information
I was recently given the book Wi-Foo, The Secrets of Wireless Hacking as a present for my birthday, and I have been reading it extensively for the past few days. I have been involved with wireless security for a few years now, giving security talks to members of my community and helping out friends and family stay secure while enjoying the wonderful advantages of wireless computing. Over the past couple of years, I have slowly built up a small reference library of books related to wireless technologies and security. I even got involved in a small antenna building hobby which enabled me to better understand some of the ways RF works.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst book i ever read
1)I might have sat with the book if not for their jokes
3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, if you're patient and willing to sift for it
While the book's attempt at humor irritates me, I still manage to find good information. The author covers a lot of material. Some of it is way too simplistic. Some of it is not deep enough in my opinion. I've picked it up a few times and put it back down, but won't toss it. That being said, I'm still looking for seomthing better (SAP Press doesn't have anything actually good either, despite some new titles).

1-0 out of 5 stars The presentation stinks
I got this book to get myself more educated on what SAP Netweaver is all about. I've been doing SAP consulting for over ten years but, like others, feel like I'm not up-to-date with the latest SAP Technologies and products.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I ever read
I have not much to say about this book -- all I have to say is that it's really crappy and pretty out-dated. The worst part I saw about it was IRC logs; over than 10 pages full of conversation logs among script kiddies!
5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener with practical knowledge to gain!
This book was written during what I call the "Age of Hacker Manuals".I'm happy to report that this isn't another copy and pasted book on exploits and vulnerabilities. This book goes deeper into analyzing attacks by creating Honeynets, purposely undefended networks for the sole purpose of intelligence gathering on the Blackhat community. This is a book for a true hacker, unlike many books that I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bible for those using SQL 2005
Some people commented on the poor editing: typos & some wrong pictures. True. (It detracts, but you can figure it out easily)
4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to a Point
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK HOPING IT WOULD GIVE ME SOME INSIGHT AND BACKGROUND TO BEGIN USING 2005, AND IT DID JUST THAT. SEEMS TO GO INTO THE "MATH" A BIT TOO MUCH, AND MOST WAS OVER MY HEAD. COULD HAVE USED A BIT MORE ABOUT THE MMC AND HOW TO USE THAT TO BETTER USE, BUT ALL IN ALL A BOOK THAT IS GOOD FOR MY LIBRRAY. F ANYONE KNOWS OF A GOOD RESOURCE ON USING THE MMC IN SQL2K5 LET ME KNOW:-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Book
At the time I'm writing this review this book is the only one available dedicated solely to the data mining features of SQL Server 2005. The book is good, but I was disappointed in it as well on three fronts. First, there is a chapter dedicated to each of the data mining algorithms. I didn't find the business use case examples for when, why, and how to use each algorithm sufficient. Second, each of the algorithm chapters goes off the deep-end explaining the mathematical basis for the algorithm. There are very, very few developers who are going to remember enough of their college mathematics to follow along. Third, the technical coverage of how to use the APIs and the data mining extension language (DMX) is superficial, particularly with DMX. After reading this book cover to cover I couldn't go off and write a DMX query if I wanted to. On the application I'm working on we are planning to implement our own web visualization viewers for the data mining algorithms. This book didn't give me what I needed in understanding the object model exposed by the APIs in order to handle the back-end coding for this. All in all, if you are planning to do data mining with SQL Server 2005 I would recommend this book only because at the time of this writing there is nothing else available. However, you will learn quite a bit about data mining with it and depending on your prior experience (more is better) it might be an excellent fit for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistics
If you have ever struggled with statistical concepts and books that only partially explain the sources of each variable in statstical equations, then this is the book for you. Their constant repetition of statistical concepts with each example case study was VERY helpful in cementing these concepts in my mind. 5-0 out of 5 stars Optimized database marketing training
Having read many books on database marketing, direct marketing, data mining & CRM as a consultant, I appreciate the story line approach heading up each chapter most. Many books fall prone to teaching "at you" rather than guiding the user along "through the experience of doing it".5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need...well worth buying
When I first became involved with database marketing in the mid-1990s, and through my tour of graduate school a few years later, books on the subject fell into two categories: basic and trivial, or advanced and impossible to comprehend.OPTIMAL DATABASE MARKETING is the perfect reference for what is probably the majority audience segment: marketing managers, senior executives, list professionals, data processors, professors, and students who want to understand all the elements of strategic planning and analysis *and* gain practical knowledge to apply professionally or in research endeavors.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Book
I've spent over seven years creating metadata repositories and over this time I've definitely had to learn my craft the hard way. If I had this book from the start it would have made my life so much easier! This book is like two books in one, with the first part focusing on metadata fundamentals, ROI, architectural approaches, and how to evaluate metadata tools. The second part is like a consultant's handbook, with how to staff and scope the project, a project plan and an overview of the delivery mechanism. The metadata model in part two is very helpful; however, I do know that the author updated this model in his more recent metadata book. The "war" stories are particularly valuable as they made me feel like the author was watching the projects that I had worked on and correctly predicting all of the mistakes that I would make! If only I would have read the book sooner I could have avoided these pitfalls. Also this is the first book on metadata that is readable and addresses the subject from the business side. This is one of the most useful books that I've ever read!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good anecdotes, bad aproach to subject
Since the title sounds quite well, it's not a book to spend time. Although Metadata it's not a bad idea at all, today it's better spending our time on the Semantic Web aproach. For example, for a good introductionon that subject try "A Semantic Web Primer".
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Overview of Meta Data
Books and materials on Meta Data have a tendency to hyperbole on theoretical aspects. Recently I set out to find a book, on Meta Data, to accompany a presentation I was making to the Insurance Industry Association.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Aid in programming Active Directory
This is one book that you need if you are writing code for Active Directory. The author understands what issues developers face and what details are important when implementing solutions. It is not a reindexing of manufacturer's manual. You can take code out of this book and use it with understanding.
5-0 out of 5 stars definitive guide to .Net AD programming
If you're looking to write AD or ADAM code in .Net, this is the book to get. Joe and Ryan do a great job of covering this topic, balancing a light writing style with deep coverage of the material and practical advice about writing directory-enabled code in real-world environments. For me, the ideal technical reference is one that I can read cover-to-cover as well as jump to a particular topic as-need to get immediate help. This book serves both those needs extremely well; easily one of the best programming references I've read in a while and literally the only decent source for practical System.DirectoryServices advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Directory resource
The .NET Developer's Guide to Directory Services Programming provides valuable insight in how to properly write .NET applications that use Active Directory or ADAM. It covers pretty much everything you need to know, to be effective in programming against a Directory Service using both .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0.

4-0 out of 5 stars subjective extraction of clusters
The book is relatively brief, given the technical nature of its chapters, each written by different authors. Many clustering methods are described. Most can be seen to have some degree of subjectivity, in defining what ends up in a given cluster. Or whether a cluster even exists or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Book with Little Competition
MDX Solutions is an essential reference book for anyone using Analysis Services 2005. No other book covers the subject as thoroughly as this one. However, it remains only a reference book. It is thick, extremely dense, and not a tutorial that you can read cover to cover. Believe me; I've tried, more than once in fact.
5-0 out of 5 stars The [MDX] Bible just got better
The first edition of MDX Solutions is without a doubt the MDX bible. My copy goes with me wherever I may encounter any MDX-writing requirements. It is by far the most tattered, thumbed-through textbook I own.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bug parade
If you are serious about eradicating software security bugs, you should buy this book.Keeping an eagel eye on the bug parade is a critical activity in software security.(Just don't forget about design flaws while you're at it.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for software developers
If George Santayana were to recommend a security book, it would certainly be 19 Deadly Sins of Software Security. Santayana is the poet-philosopher widely known for saying, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." For far too long, software developers have been making the same mistakes in programming as if they were incapable of remembering their past errors.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have in your Info Security Library
Too often, software security is overlooked in the info security infrastructure of most organizations as we focus on network, computer, data, and physical security. That is a luxury organizations can no longer afford. The book gives a great overview of software security issues yet at the same time provides granular examples and solutions that can be readily implemented.Would serve as a great source for training of programmers in code security. ...
