4-0 out of 5 stars Snort 2.1
The information in this book was invalueable but sometimes it was hard to follow because it was poorly written

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductionto Snort
Snort 2.1 Intrusion Detection (2nd Edition) is useful as a general introduction to intrusion detection and Snort. If you already have a good understanding of IDS technology you may find the IDS discussion to be a bit general in nature. For someone who only wants to review the basic IDS principals quickly and without a great deal of extra detail the IDS coverage in this book is sufficient. Much of the information on Snort felt like a retelling of Snort Users Manual from the Snort web site. Part of this feeling may be due to the fact that members of the Snort development team who undoubtedly had a hand in the user's manual wrote this book. This book does go into more detail on some subjects than the Snort Users Manual. There is a good step by step set of instructions for installing Snort and associated software on either a Windows or a Linux system. Overall this book seems to be a pretty good overview of Snort for someone looking to use only one resource, but I do not see anything that is not also available in other documentation available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snort is moving fast
At the time of this review, the latest version of Snort is 2.3. However, the newest books(about two out there) on Snort, including this one, only covers up to version 2.1. And according to the Product Description, "in this community, major upgrades are noted by .x and not by full number upgrades as in 2.0 to 3.0". This pretty much means that this book is already out-dated, and it's printed in 2004, less than a year ago. This reminds me of when Linux was starting to get popular. Red Hat Linux went from version 6.2 to version 9.0 in just two years. Not to mention there are tons of books supposely dedicated to all those versions of Linux in the short two year period. Linux saved businesses a lot of money, and provided stability that MS Windows counterpart didn't. Snort will eventually replace or be at the same level as the current commercial Intrusion Detection Systems(IDS).

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of IQ
To me it is the bible of information quality. Larry explains information quality in all its aspects and everybody who descide to step into this area should not read but study this book. This is a very good pylon on your journey with information quality.
4-0 out of 5 stars Deming for data
While providing some of the traditional quality assessment measures, Larry English provides a Deming 14-points approach to information quality and continuous data quality improvement. For example, instead or rewarding those who find major quality problems, change the culture to provide quality early in the process. His chapter on "assessing data definition" quality is an important step often neglected. For example, some of us are may be using minimal metadata (perhaps federally mandated standards) that are inadequate for true enterprise wide data definition. The examples included in the book (particularly in "High costs of low quality data") are instructive, and show how someone saturated with thinking about quality (like Larry English), views such simple things as getting a fax at a hotel. If you are planning a data warehouse, this book might fit nicely into the"Enterprise Infrastructure Evaluation" phase in Moss and Atre's "Business Intelligence Roadmap" terminology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Answers Business Executives Concerns on Data Warehousing

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for deep technical understanding Spatial Databases
Last summer, when I was asked to present an "Advanced GIS" course for some of grad students in Geomatics, I was fortunate enough to find this book on my first round of serach. It is a great book with deep technical explanation of the subject and its applications. It is more a type of textbook than a book can be used by general public. However, public users may still find some chapters informative. I recommend this book as a grad textbook for those who need technical undetrstanding of spatial databases in GIS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A textbook geared to advanced GIS analysts
Very nicely written book. It is quite technical, with a very detailed and mathematically-oriented exposition. More suitable for a classroom teaching or for a GIS software developer/expert analyst than for the average user. Contains great chapters on representation of spatial objects and concepts, and computational geometry algorithms.4-0 out of 5 stars Many years of researches are collected into 1 place
I have been in GIS and graphics research and development for more than 10 years. GIS is a area that is mixed with technical and management issues greatly; therefore, there is very few truly technical books that is focus on computing issues in GIS.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have been managing large BW environments for over 6 years. My people and I agree that this book is informative and worthwhile reading.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
This book provides an excellent overview of SAP's BW. However for myself the book did not provide the types of details I was hoping for. I'm new to SAP BW, however I have extensive experience with EDW, ETL, OLAP, and BI solutions. So revisiting common concepts was not productive for me. However I would see how this text would be helpful for a SAP guru who is being introduced to BW, and Data Warehousing concepts for the first time. I would still suggest this book to anyone. Hope this helps, Cheers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice book of of BW
I've read 2 books on BW, compared with another book Ive read, this book is on BW 3.0B which is a more mature DW product of SAP, it not only focuses on the BW transactional stuff but also tries to explain the detailed theories and business cases which are the more valuable points for me. If youre a BW beginner, this book may not be suitable since its not going to teach you how to extract data, setup info source , create data target or create queries in a detail instruction way, but instead bring you a very completely high-level picture of BW architecture and solutions.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as 1337 as it seems
I bought this book thinking that I might learn something new about how to protect my computer. After reading the first little bit I realized I already knew all of it because it was all already on the internet.Pretty much this guy got all of the (basic) tutorials for hacking on the internet and compiled them into a book. Also, almost nothing in this book will work if you have minor network security. All the people that gave this a 5 star rating are not very smart. They are impressed because some tough 1337 hacker told them how to crack into systems wreck havoc.Yeah, right.Save the money and read tutorials on the internet.Do not buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars oh no ankit fadia again....
wat is wrong wid all these people who are givin 5 star reviews to books written by l33t ankit fatia.cant u people see this is thrash.which respectable hacker would include chapters like changing ur windows 95 logon screen in their book, none besides the great ankit fadia, other cheap materialinclude outdated hacks n winblows 98 tricks.dis lama material was at times so boring dat even even my 11 yr ol bro who has just started outlearning bout hacking copuldnt stop laughing and complaining how boring dis read was.is he out of his mind wat was he thinking when he wrote this crap ,did he think its gonna help secure networks and ah windows 95 for ur hacks .why not tell people to get a linux distro fagg maybe ubuntu, mandrake, suse these r secure fatia and for god sake grow up from windows 95.i guess fadia doesnt really care bout all this , hes out there making money just becoz we have stupid kids buying these booksn think dey gonna hack the planet.from books to certifications to video seminars ,fadia is taking everybody for a ride.wonders wats planned next maybe a music video or dvd by mr fadia1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
The book has nothing but garbage. Most of the vulnerabilities hes talking about have been fixed ages back. And all this stuff is free on the net. Especially the windows registry hacking is horrible. Hes just stolen the ones that fancied him and made it into a chapter. You'll get thousands of such tricks on the net. I wonder how the publisher had the nerve to publish this stolen junk and charge so much for it.

2-0 out of 5 stars How helpful is this book really ?
As others I expected this book to contain relevant information concerning general use of the SAP Business One software in a practical hands-on way. Unfortunately, it contains little or no info with regards to initial setup of company, data files and back-up, initial general settings, master data preparation / migration and final tweaking of the system in order to get the basics working. It does contain some process analysis and a list of questions before installation, which were quite useful. Totally agree with Arne Thomessens point concerning John Matlock Gunny's review of this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Don't trust John Matlock "Gunny's" review
I bought Thomas Teufels book and found it semi useful. I went back to see if there were any other SAP Business One books published. Checking the reviews I noticed someone who had given the book five stars. I found this strange and checked which other books he had reviewed. Turns out he has reviewed almost 2000 books and from what I could see he has only handed out five stars with a few exceptions which have been fours.
1-0 out of 5 stars SAP Business One: Conceptual Overview Only
Had purchased the book anticipating that it included comprehensive case study examples (based on another review indicating that it included "two concrete examples from the industry. This book provides not only theoretical, but also practical, instruction for the efficient use of SAP Business One.") Instead, found that while it has some good chapters (e.g. table listings & suggested implementation checklists) it primarily only compares screen shots with a master process flow-chart. So if you're typically like the "learn by doing" style of sample exercises provided in the Dummies or Step-By-Step style books, you may find this lacking since it only give conceptual overviews. ... Solomon gives a pretty good summation of the topic. Little is assumed of the reader except a general background in computing. He covers the main aspects in enough detail for you to understand the gist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moderately difficult and very effective
This is the most clear book on intermediate level logic that is available.I have many of the logic books that are on its level, and this one is perfect. It covers the most important, difficult concepts in the easiest way possible. It is above all clear (though very terse). It is easier than Mendelson's text but, in my opinion, as it pertains to First Order Logic and Computability Theory, one learns no more through Mendelson's approach.
3-0 out of 5 stars Readable but a bit rough
It tries to be a readable undergrad introduction and mostly succeeds. Explanations are generally not tight and memorable, proofs seem loose, there are sometimes gaps in the train of thought, and exercises often require a significant conceptual leap from the preceding text. It was particularly annoying the way he suddenly switched to Polish notation for a while and then just as suddenly dropped it, without any obvious benefit. However, it is more accessible than most mathematical logic texts. The main competition for this text would be Ebbinghaus, which I prefer. The benefits of Enderton over that book are that it covers a wider range of topics and has a lot more exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book
Enderton's writing is the best I've seen in any introductory math textbook; he is lucid, well organised, comfortably paced but free of expository flab. The exercises (judging from chapters 2 and 3) are not terribly difficult, but quite useful in building one's intuition and connecting logic to other mathematics. I had the book for my Logic class as a first-semester sophomore with very little experience with proofs and no abstract algebra, and found it quite accessible. I guess the book starts off with an advantage, being about a subject as interesting as logic, but that does not seriously detract from its merit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a MySQL programmer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Guy Harrison and Steven Feuerstein, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that will help MySQL practitioners realize the full potential of MySQL stored programs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Necessity For MySQL Developers
'MySQL Stored Procedure Programming' by Guy Harrison is a wonderful book for any MySQL developers out there in the world. With the release my MySQL 5.0, stored procedures/functions and triggers were finally added, making MySQL a real-world database that could successfully compete with SQL Server and Oracle. While nowhere near as bloated as those 2 behemoths, MySQL has a rich, loyal following that loves this 'little database that could', but until the latest version, what it could do was good, but not good enough for many people.
4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book
Having worked in java and oracle with pl/sql some time ago, I'm in the "probably better not to use stored procedures" camp for most environments - but now that mysql offers them, I figured it was best to see how they tackled the problem and this o'reilly book looked good by authors with good credentials. And, fortunately, O'Reilly didn't let me down - they've had really strong offerings recently after a bit of a bad spell and this book was no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars A multiple vision of IT Security
This book is an excellent example of compilation of dozens of good works on IT Security. The quality of articles and the different points of view whereupon are treated turn to it an essential work. It only has a failure: such amount of information has been packed in only a volume that has forced the publisher to reduce both the font and the thickness of the paper to the maximum. Very bad for that no longer we havetwenty years and in addition we were used to mark the most interesting paragraphs with a pencil.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book content is excellent, but paper quality is worst ever
I am reading the fifth edition of this book. In the earlier editions the book was published in three or four volumes. The fifth editionis a combination of all volumes. So that is good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Volumes vs editions
Some of the reviewers are confusing 'volumes' with editions. Each edition of this book contains several volumes. Each volume contains new papers, adding them to the current edition of the ISMH.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is introduction to Computer Forensics
This is a textbook for computer forensics. It should be introduction to computer forensics. The book discuss overview of procedures and expectations of a computer forensic investigator. The technical sections in the book uses software to find information. Unfortunately, this information is basic and review for computer nerds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Book to use for College Course!
College Professors Listen Up! This is not the book to use for teaching Computer Forensics and Investigation. I am a student in a graduate course for Computer Forensics. The fact that this book uses strictly commercial software for all the exercises is sad. Especially since there are many Open Source tools available that can be used to conduct Computer Forensics. The software included with this book requires that the buyer obtain a license from the vendor, before the software can be used. Then the license is only good for 120 days. This is not fair to the buyer especially for students, who usually have no intent of keeping the book past the end of the semester. It would be better to use a book for the class that the students would find worth keeping for the long term. Also, a book that uses Open Source tools for the examples/exercises, would provide much more value to the students. A much better book to use would be 'Incident Response and Computer Forensics, 2nd Ed' by Chri Prosise, Kevin Mandia and Matt Pepe. If this book does not suite you, then I am sure that you can find another book to use.
3-0 out of 5 stars Only read it a little
I am a complete novice at computer forensics (CF).I am taking a technical college course in CF for which this was the required textbook as I write this.I wrote this review so Amazon would stop pestering me with emails asking me to write this review. I haven't finished the course or the book yet but in the absence of any other reviews maybe my experience will help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isaac J Sledge
This book is very useful for learning, and teaching yourself, ER diagrams, from simple to complex. The book begins with the concepts of normalization for databases and works toward developing simple ER diagrams, mapping cardinality and participation, specialization and generalization, and finally reverse engineering; all of which are explained well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is totally a best buy. It is simple enough for newbies as it explainly the concepts rather clear. It helps in designing a good database. Great book, two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Also Get the Made Easy Guide
This is an essential book to help with "conceptualizing" what's going on with authorizations...the criticism by the other reviewer of this book on this web site is (in my opinion) mostly misplaced, as the details of how to actually click-n-use Authorizations transactions such as PFCG or SU01 or PPOM needs to be learned in the SAP class (was CA 940), or you can use the Made Easy Guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most useful authorizations book I read after AMEZ
This book is simply superb. I am somewhat experienced in SAP Authorizations. I learnt the basics of authorizations from the book "Authorizations made easy" by SAP Press. But after that I bought this book, and I cant emphasize how much this book has helped me to get the bigger picture of Authorizations. A must book for wannabe SAP Authorization Administrators. First book is AMEZ, next comes this book. I found it very helpful to understand how the SAP Authorization system is designed in an actual implementation. I am sure this book will be very helpful to people who are already experienced, but for beginners this is a book that cant be missed !!!

1-0 out of 5 stars SAP Authorization System
You put together a team of 8 people from IBM, 1 Doctor among them, to produce a book with no specific details that explain in detail, as expected, and after reading the table of contents, how to do the work with sufficient screen shots, step by step actions, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars PHP Security is a HUGE topic
This book is essential for anyone starting out in PHP, but not only for them. It offers tips for almost any skill level, maybe you know some of the ways to keep your site secure but Chris really goes in depth on some of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a developer who is writing insecure PHP code? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Chris Shiflett, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical book that will help you improve your PHP application-level security.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Beginner or Advanced PHP developer
As a very security conscious developer, I found this book to be a GREAT resource to my library. Though the book is short in length, it is very rich in content. Chris does a GREAT job of presenting the problem (citing specific examples of the exploits), showing the pitfalls, and then presenting the solutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction
This well-written book is an excellent introduction to the data mining and predictive analytics space. The reader should be comfortable with data and data analysis. The reader, however, does not need any pre-existing knowledge specific to data mining and predictive analytics.Much of the book, including the middle chapters which describe specific analytic techniques, has general applicability to business problems beyond CRM.
3-0 out of 5 stars Practical examples not convincing, lack of benchmarking
While the book is easy to read and not too technical, the applications investigated by the authors are too simplistic and not really convincing as to why we should use advanced techniques. It would have been nice to add an additional, more detailed chapter comparing the various implementations of data mining techniques by software companies (SAS Entreprise Miner, Clementine, Insightfull Miner, etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's comment
Although this book was not written as a text book, we have noticed that it is frequently used that way. For the benefit of instructors, we have collected some exercises and datasets that can be used in the classroom or for self study. These can be found at www.data-miners.com/companion. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good first read, but you risk a false sense of security
I just recieved word last week I passed my CISSP exam, and I used this book among others to study for it.Let me give you a little background: I've been in IT for 10 years, starting as phone support, and moved on to desktop support, LAN administration, Exchange administrator, and eventually became my company's ISSO, then moved on to become an Information Assurance (Security) Engineer on one of our larger programs.Consequently, I had real world experience in many of the domains already.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing is wrong with the book - just not enough
I sat for and passed the CISSP test in January 2006.I used the following resources to help in passing the CISSP:
3-0 out of 5 stars CISSP for Dummies - Preparing for the Exam
This book is a good resource for keeping yourself focused when preparing for the exam. The chapters are not "in depth reviews" of the 10 Domains, but they do a good job of keep your mind in the study mode. I did like the accompanying CD which contains a series of questions and answers that can be read on a PDA. These were also helpful to stay focused. I would not recommend this book as the sole source for anyone preparing for the exam. For that you should consider the Official (ISC2) Guide or the Shon Harris All-In-One book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The suite of utility applications that Unix users and administrators find indispensable--Telnet, rlogin, FTP, and the rest--can in fact prove to be the undoing of interconnected systems. The Secure Shell, a.k.a. SSH (which isn't a true shell at all) provides your otherwise attack-prone utilities with the protection they need. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stick to the man page
This is one of those O'Reilly books that actually makes you stupider than you were before having read it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes sense of the obscure land of SSH
For something that should be simple SSH is anything but a walk in the park. This is compounded by the fact that the documentation for SSH just blows. This book, however, does everything but blow. In classic O'Reilly fashion the author decomposes the topic and covers it effectively from almost every angle with excellent writing and superb graphics. This is a great book for anyone who uses SSH, or who is having issues with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars why you should use ssh
