5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful, highly recommended!
This book is very useful and well written!
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative as well as suprisingly useful for 70-310
Having recently passed 70-310, I found this book to be exceedingly helpful in cementing certain .NET distributed concepts for the exam-- meanwhile, related MCAD/MCSD study guides like those from Sybex and Microsoft (?!) came up short...
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Microsoft N-tier Architecture Text
Solid information for those interested in building N-tier architectures in a Microsoft world.Great stuff on how to build business objects -- I haven't found much on Microsoft object caching except in this book.Sadly, MS hasn't gone as deep as JBoss, BroadVision or similar products but this book helps fill the gap. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Intro Book
I wouldn't give it 5 stars, but definitely worth the money. I took an online class at statistics.com that used this as the text. Really a great combination of book and class and wasn't expensive. Highly recommend both to any data miner interested in getting into text mining.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
I found the book informative and timely. The book describes the algorithms with psuedocode, and this made it possible for me to apply the algorithms to a legacy structure using another language within a few days of finishing the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A simply miserable read
I'm a beginning db student, and this book is bad. Really bad. I'll just pick a few words that describe my experience with it: verbose, awkward, vague, anguishing...
5-0 out of 5 stars Read the title completely!
There is a problem in the IT learning experience that surrounds textbooks. The problem is that their is not a logical learning path to follow to obtain the prerequisite knowledge to progress in the field. Data structures and Discrete Math are two prime examples of this. Its not like traditional math where you take Alg1 then Alg2 College Alg...etc....Its more like boom here it is with Discrete. Anyhow, I have been over many textbooks in IT and this is the problem. IT authors are either way too indepth and write textbooks that are practically impossible to understand or...??? Well in lots of cases there is no alternative. Database texts are no exception. I studied Conelly/Begg's "Database Systems" and found that to be an exceptional book for Intermediate level study, however it lacked any systematic learning approach. Its more encyclopedic and detailed than what is needed in a first course. Thats the problem with learning from IT texts. We are forced to learn from texts that are written from a high level non-structured format in entry level courses where structured learning is most critical. So how do we learn and progress when this is the case...answer: you dont...its a weed out. LOL? Anyhow, look at the title, it says FUNDAMENTALS! Then look up the word in the dictionary if you dont know what this means as it seems that some people in the IT teaching/learning world dont understand this word! Kroenke writes this book as an entry level, basic, introductory and FUNDAMENTAL course in database processing. After understanding these basics then you can move on to Intermediate and more Advanced Database courses. Thats what the IT teaching and learning experience is lacking. A Progressive structured learning format with texts written with appropriate titles which is seldom the case! Kroenke does this however as the title suggests. The text is progressive and structured and teaches the FUNDAMENTALS! Hopefully the textbook teaching world will evolve from the dark ages and professors will start writing texts in a progress oriented format in order to make the learning process more efficient and effective. Hmm..maybe thats why we are losing out to other countries, they teach this stuff more effectively? In brief conclusion, although this text isnt perfect, Kroenke provides what many of us are really looking for; to learn the basics of database technology. Thanks Mr. Kroenke!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent perspective and practical guidance
I have many books on the topic but this one has a special spot on my shelf. It toggles b/w high and low level concepts effortlessly to cover DW design and architecture in a way that provides guidance for a wide range of scenarios. The book addresses key cutting, DW audits and controls, hierarchy explosion tables, etl/data modeling/change mgt.. the list does go on. There are suggestions for sequencing out the activities involved in DW construction. This is a refreshing text that blends the large schools of DW thought and in the process comes up with all sorts of new insights that can be used in the trenches.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I've been to seminars by Inmon, Kimball and Imhoff, as well as read many of their books. Kimball on the one hand, is generally clear and concise on the subject and obviously understands not only DW design and implementation concepts, but how they relate to various businesses and how the business really uses the data. He's also a fairly humble man in person.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Data Warehouse Design
This book is a must read for anyone exploring or undertaking a data warehouse. It discusses the many issues regarding a data warehouse and balances the views authored by both Bill Inmon and Ralph Kimball. As the former publisher of DM Review magazine I have worked with many of the experts in data warehousing and have found that Claudia Imhoff is one of the best in the industry. Claudia is excellent at articulating and presenting the key issues and critical information that is essential to gain a firm understanding for data warehousing. She presents the theory behind the concepts which has been lost by many in the industry. At DM Review, I tried to get Ralph Kimball and Bill Inmon to debate the many issues behind data warehousing and data marts with little success. Bill Inmon was open to the debate but Ralph was not. Claudia is able to look at both viewpoints and separate what really matters between them. The major premise that still holds true today is that a data warehouse is essential to any organization that is trying to make tactical and strategic decisions. It should be built in an iterative fashion and should be the foundation for the creation of data marts. This book should be a key reference for anyone building a data warehouse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great easy-to-understand quick references
This is a great, easy to read and use reference for both non-technical business leaders as well as IT professionals. It is also a great resource for home computer users, and small- to medium-sized businesses who often do not have the resources to hire dedicated security staff. The book covers the entire spectrum of ways in which computer systems can be compromised and attacked, an easy-to-understand description of how the exploits are executed, and, usually lacking in other reference books on this topic, step-by-step instructions for not only how to identify when the hacks occur, but also how to defend against them.Kevin Beaver also includes some very important warnings you need to keep in mind when performing your own vulnerability and hacking tests against your own network and systems to discover your own technical weaknesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR THE UNEXPERIENCED
This book is great for beginners, it talks about the ethical hacker and penetration tests. However it also gives out information that can be used for blackhat hacking. It walks you through a tutorialstep by step, and gives out names of some other books that can be helpful. If you have no or little experience this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real world information for Network Security
Hacking for Dummies sets a foundation for ethical hacking and should be used as more than the proverbial "how to". When reading the pages, try to realize that you are not just learning true methods of attack; you are also gaining valuable information for prevention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers what others promise
This has the most straightforward exposition of exploits.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, highly recommended!
This book is fantastic- one of a kind, by far :)
3-0 out of 5 stars fair intro to disassembly
I give the author credit for a decent intro to disassembly, but it's a difficult path with this book. Expensive tools are assumed to be available (no reference is made to free alternatives), and less than subtle remarks about using these tools to make commercial software "free".

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource For Any Windows Admin
About a year ago I was investigating a system to try and determine if it was attacked, as well as when and how if it had been. I wrote for help to a list that I am on and Harlan Carvey responded with detailed and useful information that helped me out.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Informative Book
I am a nuts and bolts kind of guy and this book suits me to a tee. Harlan covers the topics thoroughly and has added to my knowledge of forensic methodology and shown me new techniques to discover information the many recent versions of the Windows operating system. He has done his homework, mixed it up with lots of coding examples, and even added some dream weaving to illustrate his points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reference for Todays Windows Admins
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that is looking at Windows incident response or Windows monitoring. This is the first computer book that I have read cover to cover in well over 5 years and I have bought a lot of computer books. From the beginning until the end you are bombarded with information that is useful and relevant to today's Windows management. Not only are you told about different tools but are shown how they are used and what benefit they have, not only in incident response but also in daily monitoring.

3-0 out of 5 stars A reluctant 3 stars (2 1/2 perhaps more appropriate)
I used the book as a reference for MCSE.But, now that I'm really going through and reading it more thoroughly I'm surprised that it was rated 5 stars at the time I bought and still is.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
If you are going to do anything w/ MSFT security in XP, 2000 or NT, you must use this book, there is a lot of helpful info in it.

3-0 out of 5 stars An overly wordy reference with lots of hidden gems

5-0 out of 5 stars Interview Books
First, and frankly the most important thing to understand about interview questions books is that they help you save time. These books help you understand what deserves your attention and further reading, and what does not. These books help you understand what you need to learn, and what you can safely ignore. As an SAP consultant you can spend several hours each week, if not every day, learning about SAP. It is a major part of being an SAP person (especially a good one), and anything that you can do to reduce the amount of time you spend simply learning is very valuable to you. When you're spending time reading and not billing at a client, it can cost you about $100 each hour. That's expensive reading time! And so why would you even think twice about the cost of a $50 book if you think it will help you learn something valuable that you can apply at your job.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth of buying this Book
Before buying this book,I had high expectations because of price and author. But when I bought this book, I realized it is not worth of spending more than $5. I felt I dupped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Data mining book focusing on clustering
I decided to start with this book as I think it is the most convenient to start in the data mining field. One big advantage of the book is the way data mining techniques are explained. It is mainly based on textual and graphical explanations. There is little equations, only what is necessary to implement the algorithms.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but needs to include real-world case studies
Data mining could be considered to be "Artificial Intelligence Lite", since it deals with many of the same issues in learning, classification, and analysis as they occur in the field of artificial intelligence but does not have as its goal the construction of "thinking machines." Instead, the emphasis is on practical problems that are important in business and industry, even though the solutions of many of these problems makes use of techniques that a thinking machine should be expected to have. Data mining has become an enormous industry, and has even been the subject of political and legal concerns due to the efforts of some governments to mine data on its citizens. This book gives a general overview of data mining with emphasis on classification and associative analysis. Anyone who is interested in data mining could read the book, but some rather sophisticated background in mathematics will be needed to read some of the sections. Pseudocode is given throughout the book to illustrate the different data mining algorithms. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter, but noticeably missing in the book is the inclusion of real case studies in data mining. The inclusion of these case studies would alert the reader to the fact that data mining is of great interest from the standpoint of business and industry, and would lessen the belief that data mining is just another academic field or just another branch of statistics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook

If you do not have 'The Data Warehouse Toolkit' by Ralph Kimball yet, you may want to buy this book. The techniques and approaches discussed in these two books are almost the same. The way this book is structured is very much alike that of the Kimball's book. But I liked the fact that the chapters are dedicated to particular business areas, not particular industries. In the chapter about marketing you will find examples for three industries. I liked Chapter 13, 'Presenting Infomation' which is full of tips on effective reporting. I liked also the chapter on financial reporting which gives a technical reader basic ideas of what finance is about. You will learn about balance sheets, income statments, cost allocation from the point of view of a data modeler. Of course, the book has all the terms and techniques one has to know to successfully build dimensional models. I did not like though the last two chapters which deal with methodology questions. You will only get a slight idea about how to integrate dimensional modeling into your data warehousing project. You will have to buy one of those books on methodologies to get a better insight into the question. In general, the book is very interesting. I gave it four stars for minor flaws - no one is perfect! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for .Net Security
I read the online book and then went out and purchased it here on Amazon. This is a awesome book.If you are new to security or your company is finally getting serious about security and you work in a .Net environment then this book is a must start resource.I cannot recall how many times I have recommended this book.I hope the author makes updates for .Net 2.0 as well as continues to extend the book online -- simply a great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good security cookbook
This book reminds me of a cookbook type of security book. There are 75 concise explanations of security topics and examples of how to do specific security coding. There are a lot of topics that are not .NET specific, but generally Windows security technology. I have experience with Windows security coding and have read Keith's previous book, "Programming Windows Security" so I have not read this book cover-to-cover, but use it when I need to know something specific. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you only get one book on .NET web security, get this one!
I'm a Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer with reasonable experience of .NET web development, but little or no understanding of how to secure the applications that I write. But not any more. This book is excellent! It covers securing .NET web applications under the 1.0 and especially the 1.1 .NET framework. It does NOT teach the basic .NET technologies, ie: how to create a web program, but it explains in good detail (without going overboard) how the security mechanisms of .NET work, and how best to secure a .NET web application. It's a big book, with chapters covering topics like code access security and how to configure a web app for medium trust, how to secure web services and Remoting servers, and how to harden IIS, Windows 2000 and SQL Server, and loads more!
4-0 out of 5 stars A great counter measure: Annonymization
A great counter measure to deter potential hackers, is to eliminate identifying server response data that is necessary to complete the request. You can do this by removing HTTP response data, modifying cookie values, and adjusting other response information.Any easy way to do this is with www.ServerMask.com for IIS 4, 5, & 6.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for countermeasures, less demonstration
I am in the business of writing secure e-biz apps and I found the security and countermeasure strategies in this book to be very thorough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good if you want to reinvent the wheel!
This book is good if you want to start policy-writing project or want to do PhD in policy writing. In today fast moving world, you want best practices for the most commonly used polices, which you could review and quickly deploy. 4-0 out of 5 stars Not thorough or rigorous, but a good set of secpol topics
Security policies are not security, and will not provide any protection. However, as the well-known formulation has it:security is a process. An organization does not "have" security, rather they participate in the process of security.Barnum explains that security policies are a component of the planning aspect of the security process, and as such can provide three advantages. The first is to insure security interoperability across an organization. The second advantage is the visibility given to the policy by management's participation in it, which provides a greater impetus for implementation. The third is to mitigate liability, presumably by the legal value of the policy, and the advantages to security that a policy-driven approach proves.Another reason mentioned is that for some organizations, policy documentation is needed for iso900x compliance.Unstated is the assumption that a security policy might result in greater security. After all, even with all the other purported advantages, a security policy is presumptively about making security better.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An aptly named book on a crucial and modern security topic
I recently received copies of Hacking Exposed: Web Applications, 2nd Ed (HE:WA2E) by Joel Scambray, Mike Shema, and Caleb Sima, and Professional Pen Testing for Web Applications (PPTFWA) by Andres Andreu. I read HE:WA2E first, then PPTFWA. Both are excellent books, but I expect potential readers want to know which is best for them. I could honestly recommend readers buy either (or both) books. Most people should start by reading HE:WA2E, and then fill in gaps by reading PPTFWA.
