1-0 out of 5 stars A poor excuse for a security textbook
This book has seen better days. The author appears to have cut-and-pasted hundreds of UNIX references into the book "in order to beef it up..." I assume. If you look at the references in the back of the textbook, many of them date from the mid-1980s.For example, his discussion of viruses and worms make NO reference to Code Red (or subsequent worms) but have extensive cut-and-paste data from a 1985 IEEE paper. You get the picture. Most of his other chapters are the same.

3-0 out of 5 stars A College Level Texbook on Computer Security
This book is as its title implies, an introduction level text on computer security. Its style and occupation of the Author indicate that it is a college level textbook on the subject. As far as giving a foundation level grounding on the subject, it covers all the usual bases and as such is worth the read. It is not a practical guide however.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, I guess.
While I hail from academic background, this book was too much at times for me. The book does contain some fun and useful information on security theory, which is presented well (no mean feat!). The fans of Bell-LaPadula model and such things will find them in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study material for a practising IT engineer
Together with Mrs. Lynch's other book "Atomic Transactions", this book has been my "Bible" for years already. And now that I am starting my own company in software development, I think about making this book obligatory reading for my first new employee. Not only because of the nature of its contents, but also because of the way these are presented, and the thought-work behind it. Ideas like the provability ofalgorithms, seeing the user as an automaton and showing that Lamport time >>really>> works, are rare to be found together in the same textbook. This book puts research back where it belongs: before practice, not over it. Mrs. Lynch has done a great job. It is upon this work of hers, together with "Atomic Transactions", that the IOA specification language is based, created in the LCS of MIT. IOA is now in near-operational working order, and puts into application almost all of the thoughts expressed in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars definite reference
Professor's Nancy Lynch's "Distributed Algorithms" is a definite reference for theoretical treatments of many hard problems in distributed computing. It is a textbook, but written in such a clear style that makes it almost a pleasure read. Rarely have I seen something like that! The book has a right proportion of theoretical proofs, practical applications, philosophical appreciation of the problems, research questions, examples and study points. 4-0 out of 5 stars the only book of its kind
At MIT, I took the course 6.852 Distributed Algorithms under Professor Nancy Lynch. It was an excellence course. This books is based on her lecture notes. Before this book, there is really no book that covers thesematerial in rigorious and consistent matter. One usually have to read theactual published academic papers. Because different author may usedifferent notations or models, sometimes it is hard to see the wholepicture. This book shows exactly that. The algorithms are presented in aconsistent notation, and the models and the assumptions all the explicit, clear and consistent. However, Professor Lynch's lecture style can getreally dry and boring, sometimes I can't help felling asleep because theclass was so early in the morning. For that, I decided to give it only 4stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
As a storage novice coming at storage with anetworking background, I found this book to be an excellent introduction to storage. The book is particularly effective at illustrating how intertwined storage infrastructure can be (you can solve the exact same problem with fundamentally different approaches - application, volume, array-based solutions).Networking is relatively straightforward by comparison.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but a bit dry
Barker and Massiglia have come up with that rare beast in this book: something which is so informative you dare not put it down, but on a topic that is so boring that you dare not pick it up.I tend not to build that many SANs these days, and restrict myself to maybe 30 a week or fewer, but I still find that this is enough to make me want not to think about them outside of this.If you buy this, make sure it's bacuse you enjoy building SANs.

1-0 out of 5 stars good TOC but no content
I bought this book because I needed to figure out what problems SAN can solve for me, and how exactly to solve them in a cost-effective way using products available today. I found no answers to my questions in this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just enough DB design without being complicated
This book is now next to my desk as a reference text. It does a good job at explaining the basics of relational database models and how they fit into a modern business architecture. The authors obviously have a methodology that works for them and the chapters seem to be organized according to their methodology. They start with UML, analyze the model in UML for potential problems, then move into SQL, normalization at the SQL stage, and end with an example. It's nicely written and concise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to data modeling
I also am a reviewer of the book and an interested colleague. I've used this book since its first edition as my main reference on basic data modeling, and I have been happy to comment on its newer editions. This 4th edition improves on earlier ones by including the Unified Modeling Language (UML), my own first choice for a design language for data modeling. The chapter on the UML includes everything you need, but it keeps it as simple and straightforward as possible, making the material very accessible. The real contribution of the book is in the normalization chapter and in the excellent description and examples of n-ary relationships and the consequences of their multiplicities, a very-hard-to-understand corner of the data modeling world. The inclusion in this edition of material on OLAP and data warehousing is also welcome, though very limited in scope. Finally, moving the physical design material into a separate book makes this book much more cohesive and useful as a reference for data modeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Data Modelers, etc.
For those in Data Modeling, Data Architecture, and similar disciplines, I highly recommend this book !An excellent discussion of database design and modeling, practices and techniques. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very concise, to-the-point text.....
This is an exhaustive text on practically every known technique used in practical error correction/detection. Every individual technique is outlined in a seperate chapter, with a lot of stress on the practical implementation issues, though it does go heavy on the computational nuances at some places.2-0 out of 5 stars Beginners... Don't waste your money
In contradiction to an earlier post which expressed this was a good bookfor beginners, I would highly recommend beginners and those with desire forpractical implementation to buy Lin and Costello's book. This book lacks inthe quality and quantity of its examples. It may serve as a good referencefor the more theoretically motivated person (e.g., those in the academicpublishing community) but if you want to own just one book, don't get thisone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written by already outdated
The book is very well written specially as an introductory book. However, some important derivations & discussions are missing. Twoexamples:(1) there is a whole chapter on BCH and Reed Solomon decodingwithout the derivation of the Berlekamp-Massey decoding algorithm, not evenin the appendeix. (2) When discussing different decoding algorithm, noeffort is spent in quantifying the complexity of different algorithms. So,the reader has to take the author's word that algorithm X is simpler thanalgorithm Y. Current hot topics such as Soft decoding of BCH and ReedSolomon codes is not discussed, except for the traditinal erasure decodingalgorithm. Similarly, iterative decoding is not discussed; instead we havethe outdated Fano and Stack algorithms that are usually covered in olderbooks. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
If you are working with Windows Server 2003 security, this is pretty good stuff. For one thing, it gives you the background on a lot of the security features that Microsoft has placed in Group Policy as well as their security recommendations in White Papers. By the way, I suggest you download the Threats and Countermeasures guide from the Microsoft web site, if you don't already have it. That would go very well with this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Windows Server 2003 Admins
Hacking Exposed- Windows Server 2003 is the latest addition to the Hacking Exposed series of books. Joel Scambray and Stuart McClure have teamed up to create another excellent source of information to help you understand the weaknesses in your Windows Server 2003 system and what you can do to defend against them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not the ultimate Windows 2003 security book, but still solid
"Hacking Exposed: Windows 2000" (HE:W2K) was published in August 2001, eight months after the W2K OS was released to manufacturing (RM) in December 1999."Hacking Exposed: Windows 2003" (HE:W03) was published in October 2003, seven months after the Windows 2003 OS was RTM.Does the shorter gap between OS availability and book publication hurt the successor to the original hit Windows security book? It's possible, but I don't see many contenders for the title of best Windows assessment guide.Because this book delivers the technical goods in a proven format, I give HE:W03 four stars.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point
This has very superb explanations about the Kerberos authentication concepts. As a Windows system administrator, this has helped me immensely in understanding what's under the hood of Active Directory.
4-0 out of 5 stars Kerberos intimidates a lot of people, don't be one of them
I got started using Kerberos many moons ago, at my university. This is probably how many people got to know about it. While I didn't use it very much, it's there that I learned the basics and experimented a bit with Kerberos. Interest in it took off after Microsoft incorporated Kerberos authentication mechanisms into Windows 2000. Suddenly it wasn't such arcane knowledge.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably thorough introduction and guide, but needs updated
Like most O'Reilly titles, this book covers the general topics one needs to be conversant in a given topic.Take what you read, do a few web searches, experiment with the technology, discuss the concepts with others - this book will give you a solid foundation to get started. Moreover, like other O'Reilly topics one can see errata, etc. on the O'Reilly website. This book easily meets the high expectations one has of a book from this publisher: conversational tone, lots of hands-on examples, and broad coverage of applications using this technology.

This book covers quality assurance of web systems beyond merely testing. It offers practical insight for designers, developers, project managers and quality assurance team members. A big bonus is the appendix which details and compares automated test tools.

This book is excellent for any web systems tester. It covers all areas of functional and non-functional testing related to the Web.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on various quality topics
This book was a joy to read. It gives a great overview of quality issues within "Web systems" - meaning Web applications and architectures. The book balances a too-specific look with a too-general look and succeeds quite well in a balanced treatment that will make the whole worth the attention of any quality assurance or quality tester professional in the Information Technology industry.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice reading!
The book delivers nice panoramic overview of many technologies with enough depth to understand them in action. It is not the only book on the subject but it is one of few that beginner wouldn't toss out of disparage. It isreadable text and it conveys knowledge. It is not a book for advanced IT reader though. If you want to explore the practical side of it I suggest to pick the "UNIX Essentials" DVD and it is nice practical, recorded course that shows these conceptions in action!

3-0 out of 5 stars A mediocre book
The upside is Information Technology Inside and Out is simple and easy to read. The downside is, well, it's simple. It's a good introduction to basic computer concepts, but if you're looking for something more than the basics, looks elsewhere.5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all major IT concepts
This book gives a concise and impressive insight into all major concepts relating to Information Tehchnology. It is ideal for those who like to grasp the Information Technology concepts in the shortest possible time, which will enable them to be equipped with knowledge that would have taken much much longer time, if not for the distilled facts and coverage done by this book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
I bought this book at Borders knowing that it was about customizing and not "hacking."What I didn't know was that you had to download so many programs from the web, which many people (including myself) are not comfortable with, before you can begin customizing in the first place.I've experienced problems with several of the things the author says to download, and found spyware on my computer, which is brand new, that was not previously there (VVSN.exe, a registered security risk according to liutilities.com).I would not recommend this book to anyone; I'm sure there are better ones out there that are more worth your time and money.

I was hoping for a more in-depth guide to XP, but this book is mostly surface changes to the appearance.Cute, but hardly deep hacking.I'll probably be selling this book very soon, if that tells you what a treasure it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars The adventures of an information security professional and his efforts to secure corporate networks
Mark Osborne doesn't like auditors. In fact, after reading this book, one gets the feeling he despises them. Perhaps he should have titled this book 'How I learned to stop worrying and hate auditors'. Of course, that is not the main theme of How to Cheat at Managing Information Security, but Osborne never hides his feeling about auditors, which is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the auditor jokes start in the preface, and continue throughout the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Security is a lifestyle
Security isn't just something you "turn on".Security is a mindset, a set of systems and practices that affect all aspects of your work environment. And implementing security practices--especially in an organization devoid of such--is a daunting task.I found this to be an excellent book in that the author obviously understands security. He's dedicated his life keeping privileged information safe.More importantly, this book is laid out in such a way that it will lead the uninitiated, newly appointed security expert at any organization through the process of implementing a security framework.

The mightiest fortresses in the world can fail, and when that happens all you can do (you being the person responsible for castle security) is figure out what went wrong, what damage was done, and by whom. 5-0 out of 5 stars New/updated info is spot on!
This edition of the book addresses the most current concerns/issues that every computer professional/layman should be aware of.The sheer amount of information offerd is impressive but, as always, presented in the same easy-to-absorb manner as John's numerous other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computer Forensics: Computer Crime Scene Investigation (With CD-ROM) (Networking Series)
Computer Forensics is very appropriate considering a number of data storage facilities that
5-0 out of 5 stars The "CSI" of computer security
