5-0 out of 5 stars Rich history and nice technology review
Singh has done a wonderful job of making a dry subject fascinating. The history is amazing and well written. The technology of code making and code braking is quite complete, and could not be made more interesting of read. The end of the book may get too technical for the non-technical reader, but even they will be more than pleased with the first 3/4 of the book. The nature of the subject forces recent history to be left uncovered, but you will be amazed at what has recently become known from fifty years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Summary of Codes, Etc.
Simon Singh has done an excellent job of narrating the history of codes and ciphers, covering material in quite a comprehensive manner, yet explaining it in a fashion that even readers who are not particularly gifted in mathematics will understand. His narration of the (frequently military) history surrounding some important events in the history of cryptography added considerable interest for me; there's just enough of it to add another dimension without there being so much that it detracts from the main story. His decision to include the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphics and Cretan Linear B script was a wise one, as well.As he notes, neither was an attempt to conceal the meanings, but the methods used are exactly parallel to many used in deciphering codes and ciphers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes cryptography entertaining
This book is an excellent one that intertwines the history, strategy, and mathematics ofthose dedicated to encrypting messages and those dedicated to exposing the encryption strategy and thus the message. It explains the idea behind several kinds of encryption strategies starting with Mary Queen of Scots and how her personal involvement in the plot against Queen Elizabeth I of England was exposed when her correspondence that was encrypted with simple monoalphabetic substitution was decyphered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas, but not always practical
Like many, we struggle to de-couple logic from data, and we pay the price every time we need to do substantial schema changes. Scott's approach is sound, however, like many who write on these topics, it lacks a certain degree of pragmatism that will let you take a big, complex system from ugly, embedded database queries to one with a clean, extensible persistence layer. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with the approaches outlined, it's just that it starts to feel like a "religion" and that makes any of these ideas hard to retrofit back into a complex system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bridging Agile to Data Base design
This book has several usefull chapters: (a) USE-CASE to Data Base,(b) Class Normalization, (c) Legacy Databases (the headache!), (d) Data Base Encapsulation and more. The book can give you the information you require, to tackle challenges with more confidence. If you know little or nothing about Agile, you should also read: "Agile Modeling", by the same author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the issues and techniques
If you are looking for a broad overview of how to develop applications that use databases (typically relational DBs), then this is a great start. Many different topics are covered, including cultural and personal issues in teams, which are very important. The chapter on mapping objects to relational databases was probably the best, and I also found the database refactoring advice useful.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless For Programmers
Agree completely with all of the other reviewers in respect to practical working examples and detailed information. This is nothing more than a high-level overview of documentation and specifications you can easily find yourself on the internet. Look elsewhere (and yeah, I'm still looking myself) for solid information about how to design and deploy WS-* applications.

2-0 out of 5 stars Weak examples.
This book delivers good introduction to WS-* specs beyond that I don't find much help. From a developer perspective, the book does'nt help with good examples, it is missing with coding guidance and also lacks detail about the PKI in Web services. Possibly this book is too early to market before the specs are endorsed by OASIS. It's time for a revision..otherwise I could've added two more stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Web Services Security
This book is a good introduction to the application of security to Web Services and SOA. The authors focus on "message level" security versus "transport level" security, and its application to Web Services. The book explains standards: WS-Security, WS-Policy, WS-SecurePolicy and other current standards at the time of publishing (2004).

4-0 out of 5 stars Snort made easy!
O'Reilly's "Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools" by Cox and Greg is a practical book that succinctly describes the basic functionality and utility of implanting Snort. The book does an excellent job at discussing the different configuration parameters when deploying Snort.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools is just a great book.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better discourses on Snort
This is basically a book about intrusion detection using all open source tools. It starts with an introductory chapter that explains the problem of defining an intrusion and why it is becoming more and more of a problem. It follows up with a chapter on network traffic analysis including packet sniffing and using tcpdump and ethereal. Then comes the meat of the text - installing Snort.Of course to really understand how to use Snort you have to understand how attacks occur and the common methods used. The authors provide a really nice chapter on this subject. After that come five chapters on configuring, deploying, and managing Snort rules, intrusion prevention strategies, and tuning.Once Snort is up and running the authors examine the use of ACID and SnortCenter as Snort IDS management consoles.Either of these products drastically decreases the burden of analyzing what has happened and is happening on the intrusion detection forefront. The book ends with additional tools for Snort IDS management and implementation strategies for high-bandwidth situations.

4-0 out of 5 stars conveys basic ideas
The book gives a good introduction to data mining. Larose manages to cover the important techniques used to analyse data and turn it into knowledge. These include neural networks, various types of clustering. Most importantly, perhaps, he discusses how to try various models and how to evaluate the effectiveness of each model.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
Very disappointed with the book, returned it within a week. Written in a rambling and scatter-brained manner, gives no clear details of database creation or errors regarding db2X commands. May be useful for advanced users but Oracle DBA's wanting a quick insight into DB2 database creation and administration, stay away. Goes into other aspects of DB2 very well, but pointless if you are not taught how to create/troubleshoot the damned database in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Beginners
I bought this book when I started out in DB2.It's interesting, humorous style made for easy-reading and I covered most of the book within 2 weeks. This book is not a reference text or a thorough description of the more advanced areas of DB2, but covers the entry level to intermediate levels brilliantly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good rewrite of basics, advanced stuff not complete
As an experienced DBA and DB developer in just about every major DB product except DB2, I was disappointed that there is no book on the market explaining "in DB2, feature A works like this; feature B goes like that; feature C is entirely unique, etc. etc."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ecellent for covering SEO basics
This book is the best start to learning SEO. It covers all the SEO basics which may be all you need to get a decent listing. I'd say that the basics are 90% of rankings. My sites which I can't list due to the review policies enjoys about 5 keywords on page 1 of Google and Yahoo. It would have been a 5 star rating but I felt not enough changed from the prior revision.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!
While in the process of working on my new website, I came across this book and ordered it right away based on other reviews. I was not disappointed. It's a must for anyone getting ready to launch a new site or anyone wanting to drive more traffic to their already built site. Even if you think you know a lot about keywords and SEO, this is an excellent buy. It did for me what a company specializing in SEO wanted to do for $8,000. I'm sure the SEO company would have provided an excellent service, but by reading this book, I've learned how to do it myself and will now know how to tweak my site in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies
If you're up-to-date with all the latest and greatest this is mainly a review. However, if you're not completely familiar with the terms and usage of SEO this is a great book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The books are a fraud

5-0 out of 5 stars Interview Books
First, and frankly the most important thing to understand about interview questions books is that they help you save time. These books help you understand what deserves your attention and further reading, and what does not. These books help you understand what you need to learn, and what you can safely ignore. As an SAP consultant you can spend several hours each week, if not every day, learning about SAP. It is a major part of being an SAP person (especially a good one), and anything that you can do to reduce the amount of time you spend simply learning is very valuable to you. When you're spending time reading and not billing at a client, it can cost you about $100 each hour. That's expensive reading time! And so why would you even think twice about the cost of a $50 book if you think it will help you learn something valuable that you can apply at your job.

This book is obviously a bit outdated but since finding good books giving you an overview of SAP is so hard, it may still be worth having a look at this one.

The authors provide an excellent overview of what to expect when embarking upon the implementation of an enterprise resource planning system like SAP.They provide thoughtful insight on factors that should influence thedecision to proceed with such a project as well as sufficient detail on theparticulars of SAP.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bluff your way into a job
I have an issue with the whole idea of buying a book just to get through an interview. I find it rather distasteful. I looked at this book as someone at work had it and I was disappointed at the content. I guess if it was the only book out there on MM then it would be be worth buying, but there are much better books out there if you actually want to know about the subject matter.

Ignore "Complete" in the title. No book can hope to match the breadth of the Web. But Schlein does a commendable job in succinctly describing several hundred websites. The value in this book is in his selection. The websites typically have reliable content and lots of it.

This book is really good at bringing together a lot of different details together having it make sense. It has been a couple of years since I worked on SANs and reading this book really refreshed the concepts for me.W. Curtis Preston's writing style is very easy to follow as he usually adds in insightful side items to break up the book a bit.I was expecting a very well written book as I also read his backup & recovery book which I really enjoyed too.I reccomend this book to anyone who is starting to investigate san or nas solutions or wants to get a good solid starting point with those technologies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MS Access Database Workgroup Security.
A good book will find the reader.I would like to thank Mr. Robinson for a well written read.Besides all the other things I have in my life to do I was able to finish his work in about two weeks.I have read all the other reviews; there is nothing I can add.I can however tell you that if you are into Access database (and you know if you are) then this book is an imperative.I have had many books on Access database pass my way, nothing compares with Mr. Robinsons' book on security and protection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for MS Access Security
This has got to be the best MS Access resource book that I have purchased.Like others, I have found MS Access security hard to understand but with Gary Robinson's help I am now getting a grasp on how I can keep sensitive data secure. The book is aimed at those who are new to security as well as those with experience. Also, the downloable database, with forms and code that you can easily use in your own applications, is a real time saver.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best book for MS Access Security
This is the perfect book for MS Access Security since it caters to all levels of users and is extremely easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE CSI OF COMPUTER EVIDENCE!!
Are you a law enforcement officer, system administrator, IT professional, legal professional or a computer forensics student? If you are, this book is for you! Author Christopher LT Brown, has done an outstanding job of writing a great book by focusing on the first two phases of the computer forensics process: computer evidence collection and preservation.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book on the Subject
This is a timely book as we are hearing more and more about the U.S. military and intelligence agencies collecting the computers used by terrorists. This same trend is appearing in conventional law enforcement. The amount of information that can be stored on a computer is, of course huge, also important is the transient: What web site is the computer viewing? What e-mail system is on-line? What can be gotten from the router being used?
4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
It seems that a lot of books on forensics concentrate on making a disk image of the hard drive being examined, filtering the information on the disk, and presenting it in proper format for court use. However, collecting and preserving the evidence is much more than imaging the hard disk.If the computer is still on then evidence may be in memory, potential evidence may be on routers, proxy servers, etc. This book details this part of forensic evidence gathering, an area often just skimmed over in other computer forensics texts. This is a critical aspect of investigation because it does not matter how well your filtering works and how much evidence you obtain if your data preservation was not done correctly and the evidence is inadmissible in court.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference but...
for anyone conducting an investigation, this is the epitome of a textbook reference book hybrid. The book provides a good overview of the most popular tools on the market and how to effectively use them during the investigative process, as well as legal requirements for evidence handling and tracking.
5-0 out of 5 stars A VITAL reference book
This book has been an extremely valuable reference for me and my coworkers on any subject related to forensics that we have encountered in our investigations. This is the only book I've found that covers the laws of forensics as well as technical details of analysis.I strongly recommend this book to anyone that is involved in computer forensics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information in Familiar Hacking Exposed Format
I am never really disappointed in any of the Hacking Exposed series of books. While some of the information may be redundant or appear in other books from the series, Hacking Exposed more or less built, never mind set, the bar for this type of book and each book in the series does an admirable, if not exemplary job of conveying the intended information.

4-0 out of 5 stars General info is great
The specifics are outdated in this book, but well worth the purchase price for the general principles that will probably remain timeless.
1-0 out of 5 stars Web Sites
I would recommendthis book for anyone teaching a coarse in web site development or any one making a web site. I have made 3 web sites and they would have been better if I had read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you're building a new site
Shari Thurow's "Search Engine Visibility" offers the basics of designing a search-engine-friendly website. It is a bit outdated, but does still provide lots of useful tips.It is quite readable and on the brief side.Ms. Thurow uses a sample organization, a Tea company, to illustrate her points.
