5-0 out of 5 stars Very solid book
As someone new to OLAP, I found this book to be VERY helpful really getting a solid handle on OLAP.My company needed to understand and move forward on building a OLAP solution. This book helped my get a handle on what we needed to do, and a high level of how to go about it.
5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a great read
In my mind this book is defintely the most definitive guide to dimensional modeling.Although there are some chapters (the last two that deals with process and other issues, the biggest part of the book is solely about dimensional modeling. Yes the first chapter deals with what it is (in general), why we would like to use dimensional modeling and some myths and caveats. However, from chapter 2 through 12, the book is hand-on.
5-0 out of 5 stars The standard
If you only have time to read one book about dwh, read this one. It gives beguinners a complete overview about the most important aspects (technologies and techniques) involved, for the advanced one this book a good reverece (especially in terms of data modelling).

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy tool on the desk of anyETL Developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of the ETL building blocks
This is one of the few references out there providing the building blocks of good ETL design. There is plenty of technical documentation and forums out there that are specific to one ETL tool or DBMS but this is a better starting place for ETL developers. It is required reading as ETL projects often take short cuts in design, data quality and metadata management and reporting. This leads to very expensive Data Warehouse administration costs and often a complete rebuild of load jobs.
5-0 out of 5 stars A survival Guide and a Must
A survival guide and a must have for every data warehouse architect. This book is written for architects - not for ETL developers.Written from the 10,000 foot level, many of the architectures and designs are `nice to haves' and would require tremendous commitments in resources to be implemented and thus may be too lofty for many organizations.HOWEVER, it is best to have a theoretical bulls-eye, a target to shoot for, and try to make small baby steps towards implementing the optimal solution, then not have a hypothetical utopia at all to strive for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Oracle 10g RAC!
I consider this book and the other new book on Oracle 10g RAC,
5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive 10g RAC information. Impressive topic coverage!
Really good book. I found it very useful as it covers almost all topics from DBA prospective. Information is technical enough for an experienced DBA or Developer. Book is well structured and it is easy to follow the material cover to cover. Up to date information in all aspects (Oracle binary set up, OS , networking and development).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book but needs a few things added.
I won't bore you with another rendition of the books praises, enough other people have already written them below. What I will tell you is what is not enough or missing:The word toolkit to me implies that there are tools included (i.e. a cd or dvd) - there is none. Many things are discussed and examples given where a CD with code, sample questionaires, sample project plans ( in standard tool formats such as MS Project) and such would have been welcome. This downgrades the books usefullness for me.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a "How To", it's a methodology
Excellent book for middle to upper management to learn the 10,000 foot overview of data warehousing.Reading this book can give you all the jargon you'll need to smooze your fellow IT personnel across a conference room table about data warehousing.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit - Good book, but not an excellent book.
Basically, the kimball group , joined the book The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit (TDWLT) + MS BI Toolset.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very bad book
This book doesn't cost its money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book worked for me
I used this book, and one other, to take and pass the Oracle Certified Professional exam (OCP).The other book I used was Oracle Press' PL/SQL Program Units Exam Guide, which focuses just on the second exam. This book covers all of the exams, but the second exam is especially difficult, and a friend recommended that one for that exam specifically.2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic
Good book for a beginner (this is an excellent intro to SQL and PL/SQL), but not enough depth for the exams. It covers all the necessary areas, but barely skims the surface on numerous important topics.I recommend the Sybex book (even though it's a little dry). For each test, I'd start with this book and then move on to another text; that should be all you need to pass the exams.Be sure to PRACTICE; that's by far the most important element of success. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Balanced
I applaud the approach taken in this book to present all of the aspects of developing such a critical function.Too often these projects are scoped only from the technology perspective where the ultimate solution is to simply select and implement software. The organizational issues can be much more challenging and have more impact on the long term success or failure of these projects. The authors have presented these issues in a well-balanced and understandable manner.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is involved in developing or using a CDI solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Accessible
This book takes a pretty dry topic and makes it highly accessible. Frankly, the topic can put me to sleep pretty quickly but I started the book because I knew I needed to know more about CDI. I finished the book because it was interesting, practical, and lively. This is a must read, especially for us marketing types who need that one version of the truth so desperately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, pragmatic guidance on a critical topic
Jill and Evan have once again translated their hands-on work with real-life companies into a well-written and informative book on customer data management and integration. I have distributed the book to several staff members and colleagues, and Chapter 6--Who Owns the Data Anyway? Data Governance, Data Management, and Data Stewardship"--is positively dog-eared. I particularly appreciate the case studies in the book, and the CheckFree case study brought home the concepts of how to organize and execute a true data governance framework with the participation of executives. Moreover, the book addresses gnarly political and organizational issues that other sources often gloss over.I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to get more value out of their customer data. ... Data warehosuing is a difficult subject to grasp. There are many disciplines that have to come together to make data warehousing work : database design, business understanding, management expertise, data mining, creating reports, project management, OLAP and more.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter
Great place to start learning about DW.The author builds the concepts layer upon layer. Very easy to follow the progression.Once you'e finished this book, then move on to Ralph's Lifecycle Toolkit for some nitty-gritty examples and much more about building data marts into datawarehouses.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Book with Little Competition
MDX Solutions is an essential reference book for anyone using Analysis Services 2005. No other book covers the subject as thoroughly as this one. However, it remains only a reference book. It is thick, extremely dense, and not a tutorial that you can read cover to cover. Believe me; I've tried, more than once in fact.
5-0 out of 5 stars The [MDX] Bible just got better
The first edition of MDX Solutions is without a doubt the MDX bible. My copy goes with me wherever I may encounter any MDX-writing requirements. It is by far the most tattered, thumbed-through textbook I own.

1-0 out of 5 stars The (im)practical approach to DW design
If you work for a large corporation which has millions of $ to spend on DW projects, maybe you should look at this book and even consider some of the ideas that it contains.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about building a Data Warehouse
An extremely well written book that not only is wide in scope but also tells the story - shows how and why the data warehouse evolved. The author details the subject thoroughly, points out the pitfalls, explains the proper methodology for success. The illustrations are terrific! This is a must have for anyone involved in Data Warehousing projects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pedantic and sluggish
I know the Inmon vs. Kimball thing has turned into something of a feud. Having owned the first and second edition of this particular book (the first edition is now more useful than ever hollowed out with a knife to hide jewelry) and having browsed through the third edition that a colleague purchased, I must say that the major change since the obscure first edition is that Inmon has now taken a much more defensive tone now that Kimball is out there presenting clear, concise and useful real-world concepts and implementation techniques and gathering followers. I also own Inmon's "Using the Data Warehouse", "Data Warehousing and the Zachman Framework", and "Exploration Warehousing" and the question that comes to mind most after reading through these books is why did I waste the money. The reading is difficult, not so much because the subject matter is difficult, but more because it seems to be dry theory and has little advice on how to actually design a real working data warehouse. When later, Kimball came out with his breakthrough book: "The Data Warehouse Toolkit", it all seemed conceptually so much simpler and straightforward. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a MySQL programmer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Guy Harrison and Steven Feuerstein, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that will help MySQL practitioners realize the full potential of MySQL stored programs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Necessity For MySQL Developers
'MySQL Stored Procedure Programming' by Guy Harrison is a wonderful book for any MySQL developers out there in the world. With the release my MySQL 5.0, stored procedures/functions and triggers were finally added, making MySQL a real-world database that could successfully compete with SQL Server and Oracle. While nowhere near as bloated as those 2 behemoths, MySQL has a rich, loyal following that loves this 'little database that could', but until the latest version, what it could do was good, but not good enough for many people.
4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book
Having worked in java and oracle with pl/sql some time ago, I'm in the "probably better not to use stored procedures" camp for most environments - but now that mysql offers them, I figured it was best to see how they tackled the problem and this o'reilly book looked good by authors with good credentials. And, fortunately, O'Reilly didn't let me down - they've had really strong offerings recently after a bit of a bad spell and this book was no exception.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have been managing large BW environments for over 6 years. My people and I agree that this book is informative and worthwhile reading.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
This book provides an excellent overview of SAP's BW. However for myself the book did not provide the types of details I was hoping for. I'm new to SAP BW, however I have extensive experience with EDW, ETL, OLAP, and BI solutions. So revisiting common concepts was not productive for me. However I would see how this text would be helpful for a SAP guru who is being introduced to BW, and Data Warehousing concepts for the first time. I would still suggest this book to anyone. Hope this helps, Cheers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice book of of BW
I've read 2 books on BW, compared with another book Ive read, this book is on BW 3.0B which is a more mature DW product of SAP, it not only focuses on the BW transactional stuff but also tries to explain the detailed theories and business cases which are the more valuable points for me. If youre a BW beginner, this book may not be suitable since its not going to teach you how to extract data, setup info source , create data target or create queries in a detail instruction way, but instead bring you a very completely high-level picture of BW architecture and solutions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Book
I've spent over seven years creating metadata repositories and over this time I've definitely had to learn my craft the hard way. If I had this book from the start it would have made my life so much easier! This book is like two books in one, with the first part focusing on metadata fundamentals, ROI, architectural approaches, and how to evaluate metadata tools. The second part is like a consultant's handbook, with how to staff and scope the project, a project plan and an overview of the delivery mechanism. The metadata model in part two is very helpful; however, I do know that the author updated this model in his more recent metadata book. The "war" stories are particularly valuable as they made me feel like the author was watching the projects that I had worked on and correctly predicting all of the mistakes that I would make! If only I would have read the book sooner I could have avoided these pitfalls. Also this is the first book on metadata that is readable and addresses the subject from the business side. This is one of the most useful books that I've ever read!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good anecdotes, bad aproach to subject
Since the title sounds quite well, it's not a book to spend time. Although Metadata it's not a bad idea at all, today it's better spending our time on the Semantic Web aproach. For example, for a good introductionon that subject try "A Semantic Web Primer".
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Overview of Meta Data
Books and materials on Meta Data have a tendency to hyperbole on theoretical aspects. Recently I set out to find a book, on Meta Data, to accompany a presentation I was making to the Insurance Industry Association.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of IQ
To me it is the bible of information quality. Larry explains information quality in all its aspects and everybody who descide to step into this area should not read but study this book. This is a very good pylon on your journey with information quality.
4-0 out of 5 stars Deming for data
While providing some of the traditional quality assessment measures, Larry English provides a Deming 14-points approach to information quality and continuous data quality improvement. For example, instead or rewarding those who find major quality problems, change the culture to provide quality early in the process. His chapter on "assessing data definition" quality is an important step often neglected. For example, some of us are may be using minimal metadata (perhaps federally mandated standards) that are inadequate for true enterprise wide data definition. The examples included in the book (particularly in "High costs of low quality data") are instructive, and show how someone saturated with thinking about quality (like Larry English), views such simple things as getting a fax at a hotel. If you are planning a data warehouse, this book might fit nicely into the"Enterprise Infrastructure Evaluation" phase in Moss and Atre's "Business Intelligence Roadmap" terminology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Answers Business Executives Concerns on Data Warehousing
Data warehousing conjures many myths - both technical and business. Seldom is a marriage of business and technical skills more necessary than in data warehousing implementations.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Data mining book focusing on clustering
I decided to start with this book as I think it is the most convenient to start in the data mining field. One big advantage of the book is the way data mining techniques are explained. It is mainly based on textual and graphical explanations. There is little equations, only what is necessary to implement the algorithms.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but needs to include real-world case studies
Data mining could be considered to be "Artificial Intelligence Lite", since it deals with many of the same issues in learning, classification, and analysis as they occur in the field of artificial intelligence but does not have as its goal the construction of "thinking machines." Instead, the emphasis is on practical problems that are important in business and industry, even though the solutions of many of these problems makes use of techniques that a thinking machine should be expected to have. Data mining has become an enormous industry, and has even been the subject of political and legal concerns due to the efforts of some governments to mine data on its citizens. This book gives a general overview of data mining with emphasis on classification and associative analysis. Anyone who is interested in data mining could read the book, but some rather sophisticated background in mathematics will be needed to read some of the sections. Pseudocode is given throughout the book to illustrate the different data mining algorithms. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter, but noticeably missing in the book is the inclusion of real case studies in data mining. The inclusion of these case studies would alert the reader to the fact that data mining is of great interest from the standpoint of business and industry, and w
