5-0 out of 5 stars BEN FORTA IS AMAZING
This man is amazing. I can feel his passion for ColdFusion when I read the book. I also have his Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes and it's the same way. I have a library of technical books, mostly software and programming language books but I don't have any that are as easy to understand and as fun to follow as the Forta books. Lastly, I love reading classical literature as well. Some of my favorites are Dante's Inferno and Milton's Paradise Lost (Tom Sawyer, Edgar Allen Poe, Dostoevsky...). I rank this ColdFusion book as one of the best pieces of literature that I've ever read. That's how good it is to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
This is the first book that I bought to start learning Cold Fusion(along with the Advanced Development), and it is by far one of the easiest books to read and make use of.Everything is written clearly, great explanations, great code samples each with tons of comments.Must read for any soon to be or already a CF developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first time I ever enjoyed writing a data-driven site.
I have been designing web sites for over ten years, but working with data-base driven sites has always been a major pain in the butt. Not until I stumbled onto this program and this book. WOW - Should cover my feelings on this topic. Talk about simple and POWERFUL. Imagine this - instead of writing over 200 lines of HTML, writing 40 lines of Coldfusion, operating an entire site from one page and from a 170 pages down to 9 (no joke). If you're using MS Access or MySQL, it makes no difference, instant and simple. In less then a week I had the site up and running - bug free. Finding a proper hosting company that runs Coldfusion is somewhat of a pain, but it is completely worth it. If you have never made a data-driven site before, this will make the experience extremely pleasant and if you have written many, this will make you wish you knew about this before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book to get you up to speed in no time!
At first, I was a little apprehensive about the book - I was thinking it was a repackaged 'Teach Yourself in 5 seconds a day' kind of thing where you end up flying throughout through the content without really learning anything. I needed to actually learn this topic and I needed to do it quickly - I bought this book on a Monday and had a MAJOR project for my Database Systems class due Friday night at midnight.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book delivers exactly what it promises
As a beginner in the PHP & MySQL world, this book provided everything I needed to go from nothing to a fully functioning dynamic site within days.Great examples, and most importantly he covers security concerns as well as best-practices for keeping everything running smooth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Learning PHP
As a whole, the Visual Quickstart and QuickPro guides are a great series, and this title - now in its second edition - is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, someone puts the pieces together.
I have spent the past ten years making my living developing integrated & automated financial systems using Excel, Access, and VBA for accounting and finance departments. That said, I literally have dozens of Excel, Access, and VBA books on my bookshelf. This is the only book that I have ever seen that integrates Excel and Access. It of course uses VBA to accomplish much of this.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!!
Do you use Microsoft Office to handle data? If you do, then this book is for you! Author Michael Schmalz, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that will show you how Access and Excel can work together to improve your reporting and data analysis.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shows how to combine the two programs to get the best from both
Michael Schmalz's shows how to combine the two programs to get the best from both. All too often Excel and Access users remain separate; yet user interfaces exist which allow Access databases to be integrated with Excel's analytical features for maximum results. Chapters cover everything from VBA applications and graphs to working across desktops with package applications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest thing since sliced bread
When Microsoft took an elegant simple schema from UNIX and redesigned it into a convoluted might mare called "Active Directory" it was time for this book. Turns out that "Active Directory" is not active or a directory; who would have guessed? Well this book starts you off with correcting concepts and even lets you know that with the new terminology that the definition of "domain" has been changed.5-0 out of 5 stars A great little book
One of my students told me about this book and brought it to class. I hadn't expected so much technical content from a Dummies book. This little book really should be the starting point for anyone interested in Active Directory.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent book of negligible usefulness
The fantastic complexity of Windows 2000 Active Directory almost makes the title of this book an oxymoron. Win2K presents a huge paradigm shift to network administrators, since the Active Directory is a completely new, radically different beast from what Windows NT was. Understanding AD and how it works takes patience...it isn't accidental that there are 1000+ page books out there on setting up and maintaining an AD infrastructure. This book doesn't aim to help you do specific tasks in AD, but what it does very well is explain in basic terms what AD is and does, how it it structured, and give you the frame of reference you need before you delve further in. But I'm not sure how many people need to [pay] for this book when there are other books out there that deal much more extensively in the workings of AD. The bottom line is that computer enthusiasts curious about the central feature of Win2K and newbie administrators of Win2K who have little or no experience with NT4 will find it a useful primer on AD. For anyone else, it's probably better to put the [money] toward one of the more detailed, albeit less plainspoken, AD guides. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dimensional Modeling Made Easy
Data warehosuing is a difficult subject to grasp. There are many disciplines that have to come together to make data warehousing work : database design, business understanding, management expertise, data mining, creating reports, project management, OLAP and more.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter
Great place to start learning about DW.The author builds the concepts layer upon layer. Very easy to follow the progression.Once you'e finished this book, then move on to Ralph's Lifecycle Toolkit for some nitty-gritty examples and much more about building data marts into datawarehouses.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Serves Its Purpose
I am prompted to write this review owing to the number of negative comments I have seen. I personally read the book and I found it very informative and easy to understand. Axapta is a huge application and it is not very easy to understand, just as how math is a huge and deep topic. However, learning math helps if you understand the fundamental topics. If you miss the fundamentals God help you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book - get a copy today.
This is an excellent book.It is comprehensive and well written. This book should be read by anyone who is either considering purchasing Dynamics AX or has recently purchased the product. All new users will learn a great deal of information from this book.In fact, all good resellers of Dynamics AX should include a copy of this book at no charge with a sales quote to a potential customer. If I had this book two years ago, I could have saved my company several thousands of dollars in consulting fees alone. This book is an excellent `jump start' to gain overall Axapta knowledge, and is a great value for the money. This book will become a `must read' for all Dynamics AX implementers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying hard to cover everything... but....
At first glance the book looks very impressive and promising; however you don't have to read many pages before the cold truth of the authors' dilemma hits you. Covering a product as huge as Axapta in less than 500 pages is impossible, so choosing the right level of detail is vital. The authors chose the same approach as the online documentation shipping with the product. They describe in a clear and easy digestible language the most important forms in great detail. The online documentation has rightfully been accused of not providing procedural information (Step-by-step descriptions of how to accomplish tasks spanning multiple forms) or overview information (How everything ties together). Unfortunately this book does not provide that information either. Since the page count is limited one could have hoped non-trivial information was prioritized. That isn't the case. This book is however more than just a rewrite of the online documentation. It contains many valuable and interesting insights where appropriate. Don't expect this book to give you a lot of new information; but it gives you the opportunity to bring it all to the beach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I highly recomend this book. I think it best serves those who already know the syntax of PHP, but it is a excellent book. I recomend either "Learning PHP" (The O'Reilly book) or "PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide" for a beginner. Both of these books will help you learn the syntax and concepts of PHP, but then it is best to move on to a book that gives practical examples, and this book excells at giving practical examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for getting started with php and databases.
By reading just the first 4 chapters I was able to create my own webpages using php and the mySQL database to store tables of data.It has some good example programs that you can follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foremost book in the field
I had the previous version of this book as my text at USC. This version is a huge improvement over the last one. This one covers all the new advances and adds emphasis on the use of coding to communications channels. A complaint I had of the last version was that it under-emphasized coding gains and Eb/N0 vs. BER performance figures. This book has overcome many of those difficulties. It is still a bit ponderous in places but then it is the only book that covers the material in this much detail, truly a Bible of the field. It is a great graduate level text and a must-have book for any comm engineer. Charan Langton complextoreal.com

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful for both beginners and experts
a very detailed book for getting into Galois field arithmetics, cyclic codes, convolutional codes, ... As a very beginner I had no big problems understanding the content. I am not the type of guy who could understandjust by reading the theory - this book gives a lot of very useful examples,so you could call it fun reading it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent applications-based approach to Error Correction
Lin and Costello produced an excellent text which is targeted towardsengineers as opposed to mathematicians. The mathematics behind errorcorrection can be extremely intensive and, with other texts, I quicklybecome lost in complex proofs. Lin and Costello present error correction inmethod, with plenty of good examples, which those who need to know how toapply it can understand and the gory details of the theory are not asimportant. I used this book as my introduction to error correction and itcontinues to be a great reference book. The only drawback in it is since itwas published in '82, it stops at convolutional coding and does not covertrellis-coded modulation or turbo codes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed
In seeking out materials to train myself on Access 2003, I have found several books that have done adequate or good jobs of teaching the program. Most of them, however, did not do so well on teaching database theory or on instructing in how to use the native programming environment. This book helped to fill in the gaps. It is not perfect but it certainly was a good place to start.
4-0 out of 5 stars this book got me started on databases...
Years ago, I've picked this book up to learn Access... I haven't used Access for quite a while now (mostly an Oracle person now), but I still have fond memories of this book. Not only does this book teach you Access, and it does that very well, it also go through the database fundamentals. An overall great book, imho.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you own 2 Access books, this should be one of them
I first read Steven Roman's book on Access a few years ago when it was written for Access 97. I recently bought a copy of the current version as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical techniques that will have an impact on your ETL
Concepts and technical approaches for analyzing and improving the usefullness of source data are presented in a well organized and logical sequence. Not quite a roadmap/algorithm for achieving data quality; it's balanced a little more on the conceptual side. The techniques and concepts presented are ones you _will_ want to begin using if you have any data quality issues in your source data (and who doesn't), I guarantee that.As a working ETL developer referencing disparate, low quality data, this book has had an impact on our approach, our results, and our project.Short and to the point, it's an easy study also!

5-0 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking book! The scoop on Data Profiling.
Jack Olson coined the term "data profiling" and essentially founded this important new field in the area of data quality assessment. His revolutionary techniques, outlined in this book, can provide IT professionals with an important new set of tools for analyzing data quality. This is a must read for anyone working in the data quality field today.I also recommend it for people in related fields such as data warehousing, Enterprise Application Integration, and database design. With so many "me too" books in the computer field, it's a real joy to find a book that really does break new ground.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Data Quality Book (repost)
This book is the clearest, most practical book on data profiling and data quality that I have seen. Jack breaks down data quality issues into specific categories, and leaves you with a vision of what to do if you are building a data warehouse. His practical experience shows through very clearly and he talks to the IT developer (the reader) very effectively.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not an Agile book
Sorry, but I can not recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an agile way of handling schema evolution.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing the Mountain to Mohammed
Much more beautiful code is being written as a result of Fowler's Refactoring; the Gang of Four's Patterns; Beck's Test Driven Development; etc. Unfortunately the database development community either hasn't applied these principles & practices or hasn't bothered to read about them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pity that this book is needed
First let me say that Messrs. Ambler and Sadalage did a very good job with this book. The database design advice is generally good, reflecting good practices:Make sure that your columns are in the right table, for example.Rename columns and views to make them more meaningful.Divide and combine tables so that they more closely represent their meaning in the application.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners...
This is one of the 2 texts we've had for our data structures course. I'm not sure what the other book is, because this one was so good. It covered the material in a clear and precise way. I even have a copy of this book today, for further reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the subject, wonderful teaching..
I seriously like this book. It's explaining is close to crystal clear to me when I read it, and the algorithms listed (in pseudo-code) take it to a practical level.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books of its type
One of the best ways to discover the strengths and weaknesses of a textbook is to teach a course using it.A few years ago I taught a senior-level course on Data Structures using this book. The book was a joyto teach from, and I would happily use it again -- I thought it was one ofthe nicest textbooks I've ever used.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source Book
This book is great! It covers many aspects of Coldfusion Development which I had always wanted to know. Samples, Source Code and detailed explanations are excellent! A must have for any web developer interested in mastering their skill with Coldfusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ColdFusion book out there...
I have gone through numerous ColdFusion books. I came across this book, Macromedia ColdFusion MX Web Application Construction Kit Fifth Edition, from a reference from a friend. So far into it, I have to say it is superb in the manner of which it is written, and is easily understandable. All terms, as well as common myths (such as the hits per page) are explained in detail broadening your knowledge in general of the Internet and its capabilities. Databasing and the basics are covered in the earlier chapters, followed by lead-ins to ColdFusion, and ColdFusion itself. If you're strongly interested in learning CF inside and out, you should also buy the bundle Amazon has with the Advanced Macromedia ColdFusion MX Application Development Third Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Experience Coldfusion MX
So you want to code in Coldfusion hey? Start here. Having had no previous experience in Coldfusion, I picked up this book and was creating user login's, search interfaces, dual purpose insert and update pages in no time. This book covers it all, and a whole lot more.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks from a beginner
I bought a couple of books about Dreamweaver and I want to thank you for creating one that even a beginner could follow. The other books I bought were way over my head and I found myself lost before I even got started. I guess if I get more advanced I may appreciate some of the other books, but as someone who is new to Web design, I want to thank you for helping me get started. I couldn't have done it without you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Basics
Having only once created a webpage on FrontPage, I thought I was a bit ahead of the game. Still, I decided to look into a how-to book for dummies like myself.
2-0 out of 5 stars A rush job
The first 75% of the book deals with plain HTML, forms and other buttons and takes one from 0 to 5 on a scale to 1000.A lot of space wasted on mechanical clicking around the interface.Explain the menus and options and how to use them and don't need to walk through each one as if I've never seen a mouse. Now, if all you want in a web site is a bunch of words, links and pictures, all you need is MS Word and then Save as HTML.So, I imagine the fun part is when you have a database, to make the site smart... The database examples have missing steps and built in assumptions, no clue as to what could go wrong, etc.Needless to say, I spent many hours searching the net to fill the missing spaces left by this book.To my surprise, I found Macromedia's ONLINE UltraDev help a much better resource, with better explanations and a lot more graphics. Thanks Jannine, but no thanks! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
I used this book to deploy Oracle 10g Applications through Oracle Developer Suite 10g and JDeveloper 10g. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the chapter. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Programming experience to use this book just a decent understanding of programming logic. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle 10g Applications as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for the OracleDeveloper.
Great book.I've been waiting for this book to be release and I wasn't disappointed.Full of great information on how to put this great Oracle tool to work.Easy explanations and great examples will have you up and programming in no time. The authors real know their stuff.Great Job!If you use Oracle's application server, this book is a must have!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on 10AS with the web
This is a much-needed title and Chris Ostrowski has done an excellent job in covering all of the topical areas of 10gAS web development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, helpful, written well, a must for your collection on CMS
This book is a required textbook for my online graduate publishing course at Pace University. I have enjoyed the book and the wealth of information it provides. It is informative and written well for anyone to understand. The examples and diagrams are terrific as well as the snippets from people in the business industry using CMS.At the end of my course in May 2006, this book will definitely be on my bookshelf and used on the job. I highly recommond this book for anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a worthwhile purchase
Good book. It's clear, very well organized and planned book. It's a complete guide and knowledge repository for those who want to start understanding the Content Management paradigm and to the experienced ones who want to improve their skills as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic treatise on Content Management.
Even the smallest Web site requires some form of content management. File system directories and informal sharing across publications are sufficient for small sites. But as the size and level of activities grow, informal content management begins to cost too much and take too long. At that point, a Content Management System may become necessary to help organize and automate the process. The decision to automate is normally based on 4 criteria: content size, change frequency, number and diversity of contributors and, the number of publications (channels). A Web Publishing project where content is distributed over more than 1000 pages will likely requires an automated Content Management System (CMS). The process of implementing a CMS is a major project in itself. So, depending on your work environment you may not need to concern yourself with a CMS at this point. Should the need exist, then this book will provide all the required information and more. It is meant for people tasked with designing and implementing CMS, and some filtering will need to be done by the reader interested in only specific aspects of Content Management. A well structured and easy to read work of encyclopedic proportion. This book is best kept as a reference and used when needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Serriously flawed
I found this book to be seriously flawed in the following ways:
3-0 out of 5 stars Some of the foundation is good, but with problematic gaps
I am a newbie to MySQL/PHP. Truly. Many reviews of the O'Reilly series clearly have extensive backgrounds in programming. I do not: I had a little HTML under my belt, that's it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for learning the basics
Learning PHP & MySQL is a detailed guide to building a database-driven web site. The authors do an excellent job of starting from the beginning, assuming no prior knowledge of either PHP or MySQL.In fact the only assumptions that the authors seem to make is that you have a very basic understanding of HTML.After working through the book and the detailed examples anyone should be able to write basic programs the meet common needs as well as create and interface with a MySQL database. Some of the programming areas covered in the book include decision making, working with arrays, using functions, database design fundamentals (missing in most books), getting PHP to talk to MySQL, modifying objects and data, and security. At the end of the book the reader ends up with a complete example application.
