1-0 out of 5 stars Simply badly designed for exams
I believe that the writers made some bad choices when they first began to write this book. First of all, unlike most other certification books the exam goals are not together in one section. Instead there are whole chapters for queries, indexes, views, etc with all of the information about each topic in that chapter. So if you wanted to read about 'query optimization' you would have to read the sections within that chapter about query optimation from the queries chapter, from the index chapter, some from the views chapter, etc. So if you want to review a specific topic that you are not as good at you will be doing a lot of page flipping.
4-0 out of 5 stars This Won't Prepare You For 70-229 But a Good Starting Point.
This book is a very easy read, explains concepts clearly, but lacks the kind of detail necessary for passing the 70-229 exam, especially if you are taking this as an elective on the developer track. It will get you through most of what you need to know at 10,000 feet, but it will not take you to a passing score. It taught me things I had never used and for that it is well worth the time investment. I also love the fact that you can install the "e-book" on a laptop and a desktop at home and never carry the hard cover book around.
1-0 out of 5 stars Book for SQL novice

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon doesnt have this book and did not deliver after 2 months too!
I have tried to buy this book from Amazon. When buying it says it will ship in 2-3 weeks, but even after two months Amazon keeps mailing that it would still be delayed by a month. Be careful while buying this book from amazon, as in my case the purpose is finshed before i even got the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Might be ok but...
I bought this book because I was trying to teach myself enough to become a Financials Developer. This still MIGHT be the right book for me.However, this is not a step by step guide to the installation. In addition, the book assumes some familiarity with accounting systems.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's not a handbook, just an brief overview
We should appreciate that this is the first book published on market talking about Oracle Financials. However, this is the book that contains only general introduction. It doesn't have any detail information either for functional users or technical persons. As an Oracle Financial developer with many years of experience, I don't get any useful information out of it.May be it's good for somebody who don't know Oracle Financials at all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent practical guide to every junior or intermediate modeler
I loved that book since it is full of practical advices and really justifies its goal of being Modeler's workbench. I use this book often in my daily data modeling practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for novice and tenured data professionals
I just finished reading the Data Modeler's Workbench cover to cover. It is an excellent piece - or as Steve would say, a great story!
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for modelers!
I like the way Steve uses analogies to help us better understand modeling. His introductions to each chapter are both amusing and a great intro to the subject matter in each chapter. His creative way of introducing techniques and the innovativeness of the techniques themselves have had a large impact on the way our department does data modeling. There are two books every data modeler must own: This book and Data Modeling Essentials by Simsion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Resource on CSS
I found this book to be helpful in learning some of the basics of CSS.Perhaps, like you, I googled my way around online trying to find solutions to problems that I was encountering.I liked that this book had many of the solutions already written out in the book that I was having problems with.I have been familiar with HTML, but I was late in adding CSS to my websites.I know that there are large benefits with using CSS, and it makes your life eaiser, but I found learning CSS from scratch to be somewhat daunting. From the novice perspective I found this book to be exactly what I needed. There are larger books out there, but I really needed just the basics.
5-0 out of 5 stars CSS Clearly Explained
I highly recommend this book. I am not a specialist in web design, but did have a certification in HTML/XHTML before reading it, so I had some background. Major topics are Web Typography, Page Elements, Links and Navigation, Lists, Forms, Tables, Page Layouts, Print-Friendly functions, Hacks/Workarounds and miscellaneous designing issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference for All Levels of CSS Developer
I've recently had the pleasure of reading CSS Cookbook by Christopher Schmitt, published by O'Reilly (the people who put animal pictures on their tech books - seems silly, but now you know exactly who I mean, don't you?). While I do not recommend it as a beginner's guide to CSS, I recommend it for the bookshelf of current CSS developers, or perhaps if you have a basic knowledge of CSS (maybe you use it control fonts and colors, and that's about it) and would like to implement even more of your design with CSS.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Book
I've spent over seven years creating metadata repositories and over this time I've definitely had to learn my craft the hard way. If I had this book from the start it would have made my life so much easier! This book is like two books in one, with the first part focusing on metadata fundamentals, ROI, architectural approaches, and how to evaluate metadata tools. The second part is like a consultant's handbook, with how to staff and scope the project, a project plan and an overview of the delivery mechanism. The metadata model in part two is very helpful; however, I do know that the author updated this model in his more recent metadata book. The "war" stories are particularly valuable as they made me feel like the author was watching the projects that I had worked on and correctly predicting all of the mistakes that I would make! If only I would have read the book sooner I could have avoided these pitfalls. Also this is the first book on metadata that is readable and addresses the subject from the business side. This is one of the most useful books that I've ever read!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good anecdotes, bad aproach to subject
Since the title sounds quite well, it's not a book to spend time. Although Metadata it's not a bad idea at all, today it's better spending our time on the Semantic Web aproach. For example, for a good introductionon that subject try "A Semantic Web Primer".
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Overview of Meta Data
Books and materials on Meta Data have a tendency to hyperbole on theoretical aspects. Recently I set out to find a book, on Meta Data, to accompany a presentation I was making to the Insurance Industry Association.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Aid in programming Active Directory
This is one book that you need if you are writing code for Active Directory. The author understands what issues developers face and what details are important when implementing solutions. It is not a reindexing of manufacturer's manual. You can take code out of this book and use it with understanding.
5-0 out of 5 stars definitive guide to .Net AD programming
If you're looking to write AD or ADAM code in .Net, this is the book to get. Joe and Ryan do a great job of covering this topic, balancing a light writing style with deep coverage of the material and practical advice about writing directory-enabled code in real-world environments. For me, the ideal technical reference is one that I can read cover-to-cover as well as jump to a particular topic as-need to get immediate help. This book serves both those needs extremely well; easily one of the best programming references I've read in a while and literally the only decent source for practical System.DirectoryServices advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Directory resource
The .NET Developer's Guide to Directory Services Programming provides valuable insight in how to properly write .NET applications that use Active Directory or ADAM. It covers pretty much everything you need to know, to be effective in programming against a Directory Service using both .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs technical review but has a ton of information.
I found the book extremely useful in getting me pointed in the right direction with Reporting Services. I used the book less as a technical reference and more as an overview of how Reporting Services works and what options are available for solving reporting problems in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
2-0 out of 5 stars A troubled work
Chapter 1 made several good points. Chapter 2 was more confusing in its presentation but I got something out of it. Chapter 3 began the hands-on so I installed the sample files and sample database contained on the accompanying CD-ROM -- only to find that I couldn't successfully install the database! The CD contains only the ".mdf" file for the sql database (no .ldf), not enough to "restore" or "attach"the database. Their script to install the DB also errored out. I was unable to locate any useful help or errata on the MsPress website. It looks like the authors spent a lot of time and effort developing the step-by-step examples so I'm quite disappointed that I can't proceed further into chapter 3. I'd recommend looking to the Microsoft SSAS tutorial instead of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm shocked
I am both shocked and surprised at how completely faulty this book is.I have the previous version of this book; Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step, and I don't remember it being this bad.Don't get me wrong, I know Reed Jacobson as I had met him at the SQL Server 2005 launch event, and I don't necessarily blame him for the poor standing.I do however blame Microsoft as there is no way they could have performed any sort of Technical Editorial on this book.If you do decide to buy it, watch out for the Writeback partitions exercise in Chapter 10.It blew up my Virtual Server.Twice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have been managing large BW environments for over 6 years. My people and I agree that this book is informative and worthwhile reading.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
This book provides an excellent overview of SAP's BW. However for myself the book did not provide the types of details I was hoping for. I'm new to SAP BW, however I have extensive experience with EDW, ETL, OLAP, and BI solutions. So revisiting common concepts was not productive for me. However I would see how this text would be helpful for a SAP guru who is being introduced to BW, and Data Warehousing concepts for the first time. I would still suggest this book to anyone. Hope this helps, Cheers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice book of of BW
I've read 2 books on BW, compared with another book Ive read, this book is on BW 3.0B which is a more mature DW product of SAP, it not only focuses on the BW transactional stuff but also tries to explain the detailed theories and business cases which are the more valuable points for me. If youre a BW beginner, this book may not be suitable since its not going to teach you how to extract data, setup info source , create data target or create queries in a detail instruction way, but instead bring you a very completely high-level picture of BW architecture and solutions.Read more

OK, I'm modifying this since some of the RAID confusion seems to have originated in the MSDN docs, rather than with the author.
3-0 out of 5 stars Use as a Sudy Guide
This is a lightweight book designed to be easily carried with you. The size is such that your palm can almost fit the whole book. It uses cheap newsprints for its pages which make it lighter than it would normally have. It has a little more than 330 pages but the main part has 220 pages, the rest are for the practice tests and answers.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Introduction and Sample Exams
This is a book designed purely to get you a passing grade on the Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist 70-431 test on Implementing and Maintaining Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Note that this test is not concerned with the use of a database, there's nothing on areas like programming in T-SQL. Instead it's oriented more to the database administrator.

5-0 out of 5 stars An elegant book
Okasaki's slim volume is one of the best expositions on implementing data structures & algorithms in a functional language. After taking an introductory course on functional programming, this would be the book which tells you where to go next.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hash Tables are included, briefly.
A correction to another review: Hash Tables are included, briefly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but more academic than practical
This is the best book available on the implementation of data structures in functional programming languages (e.g. ML, Haskell).Unfortunately, much of the book covers esoteric data structures that will almost never beneeded in practice.Hash tables are a major omission, likely because theydon't fit well into a functional environment. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Editor needed
Admittedly, I'm only up to the second chapter in this book, but it's clear that Castro needed a better editor. She relies on a frustrating "Type this, then we'll come back to it later" approach (example: naming your DTD, then finding out four pages later HOW to apply that information).Disappointing as her XHTML + CSS and Flash MX books were much tighter in execution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overall XML review, but it has gaps
This book does cram a whole lot of information into a tiny space.I will say that, if you are interested in getting started with XML, the book tries to include all the "pieces" you need - like not just XML code, but DTDs and XSLT, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Visual QuickStart Guide XML

5-0 out of 5 stars The DBA Book
I've forgotten how many times I've recommended this book to people. It's well written, to the point, and covers the topics that you need to know to become an effective DBA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This is a well-written, well-organized guide to the practice of data base administration.Unlike other books on general database theory or relational database theory, this book focuses more directly on the theory and reality of database administration as practiced by database professionals today, and does so without catering too much to any specific product implementation. As such, Database Administration is very well suited to anyone interested in surveying the job of a DBA or those in similar but more specific roles such as data modeler or database performance analyst.5-0 out of 5 stars A great referecne on database administration
1.This is one of very few titles on general database administration. Most other similar books focus on particular DBMS products. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A simply miserable read
I'm a beginning db student, and this book is bad. Really bad. I'll just pick a few words that describe my experience with it: verbose, awkward, vague, anguishing...
5-0 out of 5 stars Read the title completely!
There is a problem in the IT learning experience that surrounds textbooks. The problem is that their is not a logical learning path to follow to obtain the prerequisite knowledge to progress in the field. Data structures and Discrete Math are two prime examples of this. Its not like traditional math where you take Alg1 then Alg2 College Alg...etc....Its more like boom here it is with Discrete. Anyhow, I have been over many textbooks in IT and this is the problem. IT authors are either way too indepth and write textbooks that are practically impossible to understand or...??? Well in lots of cases there is no alternative. Database texts are no exception. I studied Conelly/Begg's "Database Systems" and found that to be an exceptional book for Intermediate level study, however it lacked any systematic learning approach. Its more encyclopedic and detailed than what is needed in a first course. Thats the problem with learning from IT texts. We are forced to learn from texts that are written from a high level non-structured format in entry level courses where structured learning is most critical. So how do we learn and progress when this is the
