5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical implementation of databases
This is an excellent book for learning and referencing database usage. It has a wide breath of knowledge covering client server, transactions, SQL, physical and logical database design. There are numerous practical examples for implementing SQL for a large variety of applications.I thoroughly recommend for anyone learning databases for the first time as well as seasoned professionals who need an SQL reference. This book also servers as an excellent introduction to the more theoretical book Fundamentals of Database Systems. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Toad that was a Prince
As in most of the O'Reilly pocket paperbacks, this one is a wonderful resource. If you need a quick check of something you don't recall the details, this will probably assist you admirably. It requires you be knowleable of Toad. If you are looking for something to instruct you in the use of Toad, you may want a more substancial book. This one includes some tips and tricks that should prove beneficial to most experienced Toad users. As a quick reference the layout is good and the table of contents makes it easy to find what you need. There is not alot of meat on these bones, but the meat is pretty good. For more in depth explainations you may want to look at the Toad Handbook by Bert Scalzo and Dan Hotka.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little references to the shortcuts you're looking for
I've used TOAD awhile now and saw there were 2 books coming out on it - this on and the TOAD handbook. This little reference is excellent.Great that it just happened to be written on the version I'm using now - 7.4.The book however is based on TOAD's core functionality and not really so much on new features.Just skimming through I came across some features I hadn't even used.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for absolute beginners
This won't necessarily be a book you look at much once you've digested its contents. What it does is outline basic database concepts using Access in its examples. You can use the book to get a basic Access database started, but don't rely on it if you're looking to create databases.Get an Access or database design book if that's your primary goal - IF, that is, IF you can make heads or tails out of most of what those books are talking about.
2-0 out of 5 stars Visio version not stated
This may be a good book, but after 50 pages and finding that I need Microsoft Access, as well as Visio to follow along, and then my Visio version doesn't have the required template...it is just a very frustrating book to get anywhere with. I'll keep trying, but this book just isn't for the beginner...sorry.

2-0 out of 5 stars SPELL IT OUT IN THE INDEX
The book does contain SOME good information. That is as far as I will go. Every review failed to mention that the diagrams require a magnifying glass to read. I would assume that every reviewer had 20/20 vision but I know my wife does and she needed a magnifying glass to read the diagrams as well. It is littered with errors. One such is on page 63 "Did you notice relationship 5 is marked with an asterisk". I would like to know where the asterisk is, magnifying glass or not on any page. The book and reviews fail to spell out you better have Visio 2000 and Access 2000 to follow along. That aside from everything else the book never states that Visio 2000 and Access 2000 are what are used, it is assumed. You know what they say about assume. For a begginers book and the lack of editing I give it a "D". For general information about databases I give it a "C". I would say better luck next time but I would not drop another dime on a book written by this author. I hope he makes a better Attorney than an author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a classic text and a MUST HAVE
Charles Mohnike has not only created the best possible text for learning Coldfusion MX, but I believe he has truly created a classic text that stands above all others in the IT industry.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Newbies
This is a great book for ColdFusion newbies and web development beginners in general. While covering most of the important ColdFusion topics, this book is primarily for beginners (eg in one chapter it explains the concept of 'view source') so if you're after anything more than the basics, it's best that you look elsewhere. That said, the book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to ColdFusion and, if tested, would probably meet its goal of enabling a completely new user to teach themselves ColdFusion 5 in 21 days (or even less). This book is well written with few (if any) errors. The tips and examples are useful, with the examples noticeably uncluttered by superfluous formatting code that often appears in these sorts of books. The Q & A section at the end of each chapter is a nice touch, and the exercises offer a good way to revise the content of the given chapter (although an accompanying CD or website containing suggested code for each exercise would be handy). Bottom line: 'Sams Teach Yourself Macromedia ColdFusion 5 in 21 Days' is a good resource for web developers wanting to learn ColdFusion 5.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where are the Samples?
The author is quite good in explaining things, however there is no CD accompanying the book.According to the technical representative, the samples can be found at http://www.... These are samples, however for a previous version of this book and may or may not work.If you don't want to hassle with this - Don't buy the book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The very big and so poor
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! This is almost 1400 page book can teach nothing, unstructured not clear presentation of information can confusing students. It seems like authors don't understand some times what they are talking about. Not clear presentations of examples can to mislead readers.
1-0 out of 5 stars Too much and not enough
I also had this book as a text for a database design class in college. While reading it, I kept thinking to myself that I had learned more about practical database design from "Dummies" books. As a professional application developer, I would have to say that this book's only value is as a (seldom used) theoretical reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
This book seems to be emblematic of the problems many technical textbooks suffer.Whole chapters and series of chapters seem to be there just to take up space.Entire sections of redundant or extraneous information, or no information at all, can be found everywhere. The useful information in this 1400-page book could probably be expressed in 100 pages. It would be much easier to understand in that format as well, since extracting it from this morass is nigh-impossible.Useless drivel is expressed in tedious detail again and again, while actual useful information is in one or two obtuse sentences that are easy to miss or misunderstand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to make .NET database UIs that don't suck
I was initially surprised by the structure of this book. It starts with an introduction on user interface principles, then in goes into the mechanics of user interface implementation in .NET, then it veers into databases. This is where I thought I was lost, but actually it turns out that it's the anchor for the sections that follow, which show how how databases are linked to the UI and how that is done effectively. In this way I think the book is different than any other technology centric book on .NET user interfaces, which only cover the API portion of the problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic discussion of UI development for WinForms projects
The one quality that makes this book a clear winner is the quality of the content and clarity of author Rebecca Riordan's writing. She uses a friendly, humorous, often bitingly sarcastic voice that eases the normal tension accompanying such a complex topic as UI design for Windows applications with .NET technologies. You'll appreciate this tone as Riordan takes you through some very challenging scenarios in developing winning desktop apps.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Windows Forms Developers.
Seeing Data: Designing User Interfaces for Database Systems Using .NET is an amazing book for anyone designing a user interface (UI) to allow users to display and edit data.It is very specifically focused on .NET WinForms development, however much of the information is useful for all developers.

Editorial Review

Good programming--which is to say, programming that yields both efficient code and a profitable life for the programmer--depends on not reinventing the wheel. If someone else has solved the problem you're facing (and someone almost always has), you'd be foolish to waste your energy figuring out your own solution. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MySQL For Applications Server
Excellent text well written and logical sequencing of chapters.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solves a lot of problems! (That's how it's organized)
I had a recent perl+mysql project and flipped between the Cookbook and the author's other work, MySQL, mentioned in other reviews.( also referred to the O'Reilly Perl books _Programming Perl_ and _Perl for System Administration_.I don't usually have time to master any topic or skillset; I need to get in, get it going, and move on.This book is perfect for that."How do I get the date?"There's a recipe for that."How do I get perl to connect to the database and insert stuff?" There's a recipe. Also for PHP, python, etc. It's really focused on problem solving, and the problems are really well chosen. This book will save you hours of effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Me!
I am a big fan of hands-on books.I especially like the `From Scratch` and `Cookbook` type titles.

I have experience on commercial website databases with 10000+users per month, and picked up Teory's book to look for a primer or for some pointers.I am fairly frustrated in trying to get through this book to find straightforward explainations.2-0 out of 5 stars Not for DB novices (3rd Edition)
PREAMBLE: I have experience with creating small DBs in Access and basic SQL and have been a business user of DBs for many years. I am knew to the DB modeling and design world and was looking for an introductory text on conceptual & logical DB modeling. I consider myself a novice.4-0 out of 5 stars Informative content presented logically
This book gives you guidelines on how to design a database. These guidelines do not assume that you know anything about databases, but do assume that you have lived through at least one major development project before. This is not a quick-start "how to" book, nor will it explain how to use relational database software; the guidelines are more along the lines of "Classify multivalued attributes as entities," and "Attach attributes to the entities they most directly describe." 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
You must have it on top of your desktop... It will HELP you when you most need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent Book
It is an excellent book. Especially I like the way the authors teach. For a task, first it uses ASP 3.0 to show you how it works and then ASP.NET. It explains the differences between the classical ASP and the ASP.net, why the ASP.net is better. If you use ADO.net, you can't avoid using the namespaces "System.Data.SqlClient" and "System.Data.Oledb", the methods "ExecuteReader()" and "ExecuteNonQuery()". The author gives explanations in an extremely clear way. It tells you what they are, what differences between the two and when to use them. All the ADO examples are made by the both namespaces. It is so clear, there are no nonsense words. Another review mentioned already for another good thing is the Security. I haven't seen any other books to do so. If you are like me - want answers quickly and clearly. You got the right book. Highly recommend!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best Cold Fusion Book.
This book is the best Cold Fusion book to date. I use this book daily. The book contains clear examples without a lot of fluff. Can't wait until the next release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book!My new daily reference!
About six months ago the company I work for recently moved to Coldfusion 5 server (holding off on CFMX until all the bugs are worked out) and since that time, application programming duties have been dumped on me.As a web designer and not a programmer, this was a more than a little worrisome. After trying to wade through Forta's Construction Kit, Hewitt's Core Coldfusion 5, as well as "Mastering Coldfusion 5" it was as if the light was turned on by Rob Brooks-Bilson's Programming Coldfusion.5-0 out of 5 stars Good and practical

5-0 out of 5 stars An Brilliant Contribution to our Field- Read 2-3 Times
Amazon Buyer,
4-0 out of 5 stars Practial Book on .NET Patterns
I really don't understand the bad ratings of other reviewers. Either these reviewers didn't read the book or they are totally in love with theoretical issues on design patterns. This book shows hand on experiences - the authors shows REAL WORLD examples and illustrates how patterns are applied. I found the book very useful and it contains new interesting ideas on implementing PRACTICAL and USEFUL software applications with the .NET framework.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas but...
I have to disagree with most of the reviews here.I think the author has some good design pattern idea's.It seems like if a pattern book doesn't rehash the GOF's book for the 654654th time, its not a good pattern book. The author had some good ideas, and while most of the patterns are fairly focused to a specific problem and are not totally generic, it doesn't mean its not a good pattern idea. It's just a domain specific pattern.I think the author should have clearly specified that, but didn't and that was a mistake. He billed the book as a general user pattern book.So I game him 4 stars on that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I found this book to be really good and it gives a great overview of Java programming with JDBC. This book really has a lot of condensed material, and quickly covers a lot of areas. I was able to use the first application right off the bat to connect to a PostgreSQL database and do some simple queries. There is a lot to RDBMS accessed through JDBC, so I would suggest that readers prepare to review web servers, TCP/IP ports and client web browser java security problems. Make sure to get a good reference book for SQL, it will be a good investment for the future. The reader should also have a good grasp of programming with java and be ready to sit in the driver's seat. This book gets my thumb of approval.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2ND Edition repeats mistakes of the first
I got the 2nd edition after using the middleware chapter of the 1st edition. They repeat the mistakes of the first! On page 13, it states that a combination of ROWS can be used to compose a primary key. It should reada combination of COLUMNS! Half of the book is just a repeat of the 1stedition, word for word! Very little proofreading went into this book.Commented out debugging aids are left in the code.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this book
You would think that a book about JDBC programming would show you how to program using JDBC.Well, in this case, you would be absolutely wrong. It (very poorly) talks about what JDBC is, what SQL is, what a JDBC driver is,but IT NEVER TALKS ABOUT JDBC PROGRAMMING!!!!IT NEVER TELLS YOU HOW TOUSE ANY OF THE JDBC CLASSES TO ACTUALLY PROGRAM SOMETHING THAT USES JDBC. It's like driving your wife to the hospital to give birth, but forgettingyour wife. And remember, everything it talks about is poorly written. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Java Database Connectivity classes (JDBC) sensibly provide aninterface between a platform-independent programming language (Java) and astandardized database language (Structured Query Language, or SQL). Pretty muchevery Java program that's involved in transactions or other business operationsconnects to a database through JDBC; so, familiarity with the JDBC classes canmagnify your other Java skills. 2-0 out of 5 stars More sales pitch than substance

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on JDBC and multitier development
The text covers JDBC with enough depth, without burdening the reader with useless details available in any reference (in fact the reference is attached in an appendix, so there is no need to go looking online). Unlike other books it doesn't bore the reader with introduction to obvious concepts and examples. I highly recommend this for experienced professionals who need to understand and start using JDBC.2-0 out of 5 stars A Book without a Country
This book starts strong, clearly elucidating the simple mechanics behind opening database connections and controling content updates through sql statements. It quickly drifts into something of a rambling however as the author attempts to cover too much ground in too short a span.Reese jumps from a slow introduction to JDBC and a gentle explanation of how to integrate database calls into simple applications to a mess of complex design patterns and ugly (I mean UGLY... where are his editors) code almost completely bereft of any helpful comments.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Finish
I have wanted to produce web sites for years, but training books always lost me half way through. Not so with this one. I highly recommend it.The layout is a little different. There is a brief description or answer to a question at the top of each page. Then a series of step by step screen shots below. In most cases each page stands on its own. This is great because you can stop just about anywhere without getting lost. One small problem for my bifocal-assisted eyes was that the icons in the screen shots ended up so small that they were hard for me to see at times. (Not a problem if you are young or have the program open in front of you.)

3-0 out of 5 stars overwhelming unnecessary introductory illustrations
The full color step-by-step screen shots at the bottom half of the book are extremely informative. However, the pages are too cluttered with visual information. The excessive use of full color imagery becomes overwhelming. If the book were to focus on the full color step-by-step screen shots at the bottom half of the book and eliminate the clunky introduction illustrations above, it would be a 5 star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book to learn Dreamweaver
I learned Dreamweaver quickly and easily with this book. The other books I read takes a lot of time to digest and you tend to forget much after all the longwiring steps of an exercise.

Whenever I need to check or find some result about database theory,5-0 out of 5 stars My second database Book
Here is the book to grow up from intro. It is definetely harder to read than Date, but - as it is always with math - the extra effort is rewarding. Read more

This book came out in 1999, and it's now late 2001 as I write this.
