5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point
This is short and sweet.Of all the Oracle books I have read, this is among the best if not the best.I'm not affiliated with the author, reviewer, or publisher so I get nothing for saying it.
4-0 out of 5 stars a good resource
I found many helpful items in the book.I would prefer more information on applying oracle patches thru dbconsole and manually. More Windows examples would be great

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for 10g DBAs
The book is a solid, painstakingly detailed Oracle 10g DBA handbook. This book covers the latest Oracle 10g Release 2 features in detail and is an excellent reference for DBAs as well as developers and managers who are using the 10g database.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not bother
This book is a joke. It is poorly written, the grammar is crazy and wrong, and it dwells too much on events that are not important (click next, and click next, then click ok, and then next...). You would be well-advised to read another book, as well as BOL, before attempting 70-228.
4-0 out of 5 stars passed first ime.... but....
I just passed 70-228 first time using just this book and BOL as guides. I found the first half of this book a waste of time.Way too much attention to how-to examples of performing steps in the GUI (Click this, click next, click OK).The second half, however, was much more useful. One thing though. It is useful in that it offers a failry concise, objective by objective, summary of what you will need to know for the exam and then points to BOL for the actual information. It is short on providing information in and of itself.
1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time and money!
Luckily I am already an Oracle DBA or I would not have been able to make real-world sense of the material presented in this book. In my opinion, it is pretty much worthless if you are preparing for the 70-228 exam or if you are wanting to work with SQL Server on the job. However, it is a great doorstopper/paperweight (which is why it is worth one star). Yes, I have passed the 70-228 exam, but I can guarantee you my passing had absolutely nothing to do with this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Will do the job
This book will definitely teach you the new features in 10g and prepare you for the exam. The material definitely covered the test areas well, although often there are mistakes in the text and questions. The online tests and flashcards are very useful and (good or bad) provide additional information that the book does not cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Ticket
Today I passed the OCP upgrade exam with a 52/60 score and this book is principally responsible. I used the practice exams to find holes in my knowledge and revisited the text in those areas. By the way, the 10g Upgrade exam is a lot more work than the last two upgrade exams. Prepare to spend more time studying. I have only one criticism: the book has to much detail in some areas(the lesser new features like merge, model, etc.) and leaves a few things out of the big-new features. All in all, this test covers 92% of the material for the test. Aside from the upgrade exam, the text is also an excellent reference and learning book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for DBA 10g Upgrade Test
This book gives you a CD with one 20-question exam per chapter, plus two 52-question "bonus tests," plus a 25-question "assessment test," plus a 250-question set of "flashcards."This is enough to get you into good shape for the Oracle exam to upgrade your DBA certification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need to get started with Spatial ? Get this book.
Excellent book. I have been using Oracle Spatial for years but found various useful insights in this book. It is well laid out, accessible and covers pretty much all the bases. Good examples and case studies. Tackles the thorny issues around spatial indexing as well as I have seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Lack of discounts aside, the book is a tremendous value. It's well-written, indexed, and edited and a pleasure to read. It's been great fun for me to work through the examples.I only have 2 significant complaints: (1) there were far too few diagrams (i.e., maps), particularly in chapter 7 where they would have helped greatly and (2) there should have been more discussion about mapping basics including map projections since this is a subject about which most DBA's and developers have little knowledge and an area where mistakes in storing, manipulating, and displaying geographic data are often made. I know there are cartography books dedicated to this sort of thing, but I suspect many Oracle users would not even know enough to bother with them.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good book, no discounts
First off this book seems to be excellent for the topic at hand. However I am giving it 1 star since the publisher has put a restriction on it that it can only sell for the full book price. Retailers are not allowed to sell this book for less than the publisher price of $69.99

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work of Genius
I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.
5-0 out of 5 stars The first real SQL Tuning method.
I have worked with Oracle databases and SQL tuning since 1987, and the reason I recommend Dan's book so highly to anyone working with SQL is that his method is the first real method I've seen in this field. There are many approaches out there, but they all fall into the Guess & Grimacing or Checklist categories. Dan's is a REAL method, and it works for all SQL-based databases. It's so far the only SQL tuning book I can recommend. Any DBA, developer and troubleshooter working with database-centric systems should know this stuff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended!
I am a software developer of over 30 years. While I am new to SQL server, I have been doing DBMS developement for over 15 years.2-0 out of 5 stars Not There.
Less chest-thumping and many more real world examples would have made this a better book. "SQL Server 2000 The Complete Reference" is over 900 pages and packed with lots of ink, but it lacks relevance and many times left me confused because of its hollow attitude.3-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for some people
Since this book was titled as a complete reference, and it received great reviews here, I decided that I should dive right into SQL Server with this book at hand.Unfortunately, I found that this book is not enjoyable to read for those of us who's attension is hard to hold.I imagine that many others (especially those who have some knowledge of the topic) would get some use out of it, but I'm posting this review to warn beginners, and people with short attension spans that this is not the book to start with even if you have technical knowlegde in other areas. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Needs technical review but has a ton of information.
I found the book extremely useful in getting me pointed in the right direction with Reporting Services. I used the book less as a technical reference and more as an overview of how Reporting Services works and what options are available for solving reporting problems in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
2-0 out of 5 stars A troubled work
Chapter 1 made several good points. Chapter 2 was more confusing in its presentation but I got something out of it. Chapter 3 began the hands-on so I installed the sample files and sample database contained on the accompanying CD-ROM -- only to find that I couldn't successfully install the database! The CD contains only the ".mdf" file for the sql database (no .ldf), not enough to "restore" or "attach"the database. Their script to install the DB also errored out. I was unable to locate any useful help or errata on the MsPress website. It looks like the authors spent a lot of time and effort developing the step-by-step examples so I'm quite disappointed that I can't proceed further into chapter 3. I'd recommend looking to the Microsoft SSAS tutorial instead of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm shocked
I am both shocked and surprised at how completely faulty this book is.I have the previous version of this book; Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step, and I don't remember it being this bad.Don't get me wrong, I know Reed Jacobson as I had met him at the SQL Server 2005 launch event, and I don't necessarily blame him for the poor standing.I do however blame Microsoft as there is no way they could have performed any sort of Technical Editorial on this book.If you do decide to buy it, watch out for the Writeback partitions exercise in Chapter 10.It blew up my Virtual Server.Twice. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Gives you branches, not even trees, let alone the forest
This book is very poorly written. It has a lot of technical details on three flavors of SQL implementation as well the SQL99 standard, but is totally light on general concepts. It tells you how to do something (but often in a convoluted way), but doesn't say why or for what purpose. There's also a lot of circular references which can drive the reader nuts.I do not like this book at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-around book
If you want to *really* know SQL, this is the book.I've used this often when I had a really tricky data request.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very concise writing
I've had the distinct pleasure of being taught by Ms. Casteel for SQL. I later used this book on my own to learn PL/SQL and it is the closest text you will get to having her actually sitting in her room. If you want examples that follow a specific path to building one concept upon another. This textbook is implemented in my local Authorized Oracle Academic Initiative Center so you know you will be getting quality instruction in PL?SQL with this book. I think it beats OraclePress hands down for its accuracy and in-depth description of each concept. Get this book if you ever thought the other publishers tend to be too vague in conveying PL/SQL to you. Worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
The author probably has great insight into the subject matter;unfortunately, he does not know how to convey his knoeledge to the reader. The practice test questions are ambiguous and full of errors. There was probably minimal editing of questions and answers; as a result, a reader has to correct the errors and then try to fully comprehend the explanations to the practice questions. It is an inefficient way to study and learn. Head First, despite its errata (it has corrections at its website), is a superior product. This textbook is not worth the headaches.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of errors
I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably good
I got this book partially because I prefer more of a textbook format than the Head First books. This book's format was more straightforward, so I got it along with the Head First Servlets and JSP.However, I have found a lot of errors, inconsistencies and confusing explanations in this book. Some of the errors are minor, but others really cause fundamental confusion.I'm searching for an errata for the book now.(There may not be one -- I'm not finding it yet.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for SQL, excellent reference
This book, with no doubt, is easy to understand. It provides extensive coverage of the query language with excellent examples.
3-0 out of 5 stars conversational vs programming concepts
The explanations are presented in conversational language. This made it difficult for me to understand some of the concepts. I had to "translate" the explanations into more precise and concise language based on concepts familiar to programmers before I could grasp the ideas with confidence (assuming my translations are correct).

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
I purchased this book to brush up on SQL programming that I had done in my previous career. The book offers a CD with versions of databases two or tree revisions back, most of which can be obtained free online anyway. NO database creation scripts, nor sample data is offered on the CD or on the publisher's website. You have to HAND TYPE it all in yourself. Even the sample data in the back of the book is incorrect. After hand typing in all this information, I created the sample queries while reading along in the book. The result sets in the book have no logical order. If a SELECT statement does not include an ORDER BY clause, the result should be in primary key order (if the PK is included in the SELECT clause) Their results in the book are arbitrarily ordered, so comparing my results to theirs is very tedious, matching up each line to ensure I received the same result. I find this very bothersome to a text on relational databases, whose purpose is to put data in logical order. The text itself does handle relational database concepts and the use of SQL to retrieve and manipulate the data well, but the examples and lack of source code warrant the two stars. I would suggest looking elsewhere for a SQL book. ... Read more

Buy this book!!!Some computer books are written by computer geeks who know their technical stuff cold. They can't teach worth a darn, but they are deep technical wizards highly versed in techno-babble.The people who wrote the Murach series are NOT (let me repeat, the Murach folks are NOT) such people. It was the most amazing experience to have read this book, and to have the feeling that either Curtis Garvin or Anne Prince were looking directly over one's shoulder anticipating the various questions that inevitably arose. This book is incredibly well structured. It is written clearly, concisely, and with relevant in-depth examples. The authors take pains to ensure that they present their programming examples without (WITHOUT!!!) falling into the trap of disjointed techno-babble so common to such books.Again, you get more than your money's worth with this book.Buy it, and recommend it to anyone else who wants to learn or refresh their DB2/COBOL skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
I used this book to deploy Oracle 10g Applications through Oracle Developer Suite 10g and JDeveloper 10g. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the chapter. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Programming experience to use this book just a decent understanding of programming logic. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle 10g Applications as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for the OracleDeveloper.
Great book.I've been waiting for this book to be release and I wasn't disappointed.Full of great information on how to put this great Oracle tool to work.Easy explanations and great examples will have you up and programming in no time. The authors real know their stuff.Great Job!If you use Oracle's application server, this book is a must have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Quick Introduction
This book makes for a well-written and relevant introduction for a beginner to DTS, which is what I was when I picked it up.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Good but DTS is still full of bugs
The book is a good way for learning DTS.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too many "step by step"
I found the beggning chapters are good, but in the latter half, the number of steps became so many that it's painful to follow them. Chapter 7 has 70 pages of step-by-step and I found I am like a robot just going through the steps. (Well, I didn't do it until the end, I am not a robot).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Buy this book if you haven't already... it's wonderful!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Oracle help
Effective Oracle Database 10g Security by Design is sooo helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Enough for the CIA
It would be easy to be secure if all the data were in one room, there were no connections to the outside world (well I guess you have to have power coming in, but that's all), and there were no people who knew the data.

3-0 out of 5 stars It would be a MUCH better book with a different title
While this work may be "The Official Guide" it is a long way from complete or authoratative. It is much more of an overview than a guide. It is an excleent overview or enhancements book for readers with a technical background.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great TECHNICAL review of DB2 UDB V8
This is a great book for what I do. I needed to keep on top of the new features in DB2 -- though for the wrong reasons (we are an Oracle business partner), I def'ly got to see all the new features with deep technical explanations and even examples; pretty neat stuff from IBM I must say. I looked at the What's New Guide that was referenced in other comments before buying this book, hoping to save a buck. Too bad they don't have a review forum for that book, horrible. All marketing fluff. Don't bother trying to find it -- it will only make you mad. Buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Already covered in What's New Guide
I was disappointed in the depth of the material. I had already read the What's New manual and found much of that repeated here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's eye to improving processes and manageability can't be beat.
Any programmer or designer who wants a step-by-step tutorial to Pro Oracle Database 10gRAC on Linux must have this book: it surveys all details from installation to advanced administration and optimization, with chapters covering installations across multiple servers for all Oracle users. The book delivers RAC on Linux solutions through a series of explanations on configuration, tips on techniques, and more: it's eye to improving processes and manageability can't be beat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait. Great job on Oracle 10g RAC for Linux!!!
Eager for this new Oracle 10g RAC book, I waited since I already am a big fan of both Julian Dyke's website for RAC implementations. Awesome job guys!!!! I have all the other RAC books and most of them stink. The insight and pleasant tips and reading style made it worth the wait. I am only on page 90 and so far really learn a lot. Even after several RAC projects over last couple years. I really like the coverage on how storage and Linux administration are treated with respect to implementing RAC for Oracle 10g. The treatment of other Oracle 10g topics such as ASM and OCFS also is quite excellent. I think that your RAC book for Linux along with Murali Vallath's Oracle 10g RAC book are best ones around. Period. If you are an Oracle DBA who needs a real hands on architecture guide to RAC for Linux, this is the book to get.
