3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful
The information in this book is useful only to those who are clueless of SQL. Most of the insights are rudimentary and its "best practices" are common sense to most experienced SQL DBAs. If you are an experienced SQL DBA, I would recommend this book for only two reasons:4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I used this book to prepare myself for the MCP Exam and I passed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of SQL Server Data Warehousing topics
I bought this book after searching for a good practical and design guide to the new data warehousing tools in SQL Server 2000. While not perfect none of the other tomes that I own on SQL Server do justice to this topic which is very hot in database circles these days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastics Oracle SQL Tuning Book!
What a perfect book describing nearly all the method to optimize performance(e.g. index, cluster, explain plan trace, tuning table access and joins, using hints etc) for developers. It provides a clear and detail explanation and somtimes illustration on each optimization methods. The book was written in plain English and hence can be easily understood.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but flawed
Of all the SQL tuning books available on the market, this one provides the most depth. It provides solid, easy to follow examples. The flaw in this book is that it just provides 'techniques' for improving performance. It's basically a book that is useful for trial and error SQL tuning. 5-0 out of 5 stars There is no other book on SQL Tuning
I have read this book cover to cover and more. I have been using this book since 1998 and I still have to say it is good book.It is one of the Oracle Classics. It is a little outdated. If you look at the cover it clearly states it covers to oracle 8i. If you still have 8i databases this is a good book. if you are using 9i and cost based optimization it is still useful but it will not pick up on some of the newer fetures of the CBO. If you use Rule based optimization(RBO) than it is a good book. I had actually used this book as a teaching guide when I use to teach SQL Tuning for an application software company who uses oracle database.I look forward to when the revised version does ship. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book not to miss to explore SQL Server 2005
With the first chapter, you will learn details and techniques how to install and configure SQL Server 2005 for different editions. The second chapter inroduces the new client tools to interact with SQL Server 2005.
2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre writing and poor content presentation
Having worked for years in software development, I have a lot of background in programming languages, but I have never had much of a need or opportunity to learn database interfaces. When I picked up this book, I was looking for a title that would teach me the basics of creating and configuring databases in SQL Server 2005, but I was also looking for a reference that would give me quick tips on how to interface with SQL Server databases in my program code.I thought this book would fit the bill, because its title (Beginning SQL Server 2005 *for Developers*) seemed to indicate that it would contain this type of information.I have been disappointed with it, however. Here are some of the main reasons:
5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to SQL Server 2005!
This book is great for beginners to databases and to SQL Server 2005. It does a great job of introducing not only the main features of SQL Server 2005, but also the main concepts of database development and design.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a student who wishes to learn SQL using Microsoft's SQL Server 2005? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Richard Earp and Sikha Bagui, have done an outstanding job of writing a systematic guide to learning SQL by using SQL Server 2005--a relational and multiuser database.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Way To Learn SQL & SQL Server 2005
Learning SQL on SQL Server 2005 by Richard Earp is an outstanding book for those that are new to SQL and want to learn how to use it on the SQL Server 2005 platform.Excellent writing, a compact size that isn't too big or too small (300+ pages), and solid content make this a book for those that want to pick up and excel at using SQL in no time at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Show and tell book no insight
I bought this book with the expectation that the author would be able to provide some insight. I was wrong. This books does explain Concepts and Example of DW. This books is good if your just getting into DW. It would better to download the Oracle Concepts Guide and the DW Guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book.
I appreciate the book. Through reading the book, I think the readers will know to handle some real data warehouse issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to follow
Data warehousing is not a simple subject; in this book, Mr.Powell guides you in a simple and interesting way with lots of examples and hints, through the intricacies of real-world data warehousing and how to get the most of your 10g data warehouse.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best books out there
Best one, nicely explains the basics and advanced topics of oracle - .NET programming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for oracle and .net.
I got this book when in started working with oracle db using .net 2.0 beta1. It's really good book for understanding .net and oracle using odp.net and MS driver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to .NET Oracle Programming
This is a good introductory book on getting started on ODP.NET. The nuances related to using Oracle via .NET are covered well. In my opinion, the chapters of interest are 5 - 9. However, as suggested by many reviewers, the title is misleading. This is not a "Pro" book but an excellent "Beginner's" reference on ODP.NET. I hope that the following topics are covered by the author in the next edition:

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, well balanced content
It isn't often I come across a book on security that gets so much right. While I think of myself as a subject matter expert on matters of security I was pleased at how much depth this book contained and how many tips I picked up.The SQL and IIS chapters are perhaps the best coveraged of their subject matter I have yet seen.3-0 out of 5 stars Overall good - great to see focus on internal security
There is many hacking books out there right now. Many of these are concerned with external penetration testing, which most non-security professionals are obsessed with - thanks to all the sensationalized hacking stories by the often clueless press.5-0 out of 5 stars The CISO or Auditor Survival Guide
Yesterday morning I spent the better part of an hour in an interview with a reporter. The topic: "If you were giving advice to a brand new security officer, a CSO, or CISO, about how to avoid being fired in their first year, what would you tell them?"After the interview I started to read Special Ops and if there was any way to go back in time I would have told that reporter, tell them to buy Special Ops and read it at least three times.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars for the very beginner only
This is a great book for the very beginner person who has no experience at all in SQL. It is very in details and very easy to understand. Unfortunately, I have to return this book since it is not what I am looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, overall, But Very Incomplete Index
I was looking for more PL/SQL than this book offers (misleading title, I feel), but it contains good material. My biggest frustration, though (and unfortunately, this is shared by many technical books) is that the index is very incomplete.I would say that 80% of what I want to find in the book turns up empty when I use the index.Eventually I can find it by turning many pages, but I'd prefer not to waste so much time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Title Misleading - Very little PL/SQL
I bought this book to learn more PL/SQL, but 95% of it is about SQL. The titlesuggests PL/SQL. If you want to know more about PL/SQL, this is not the book to buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful...
...a good combination of size, price, and content.I have the 3rd edition, which includes an 8-page index.I use this as part of teaching a class in Oracle Developer and recommend it for my students. As the other reviewers recommend, write your name in it...the Oreilly pocket references are easy to misplace, and walk off sometimes. There are four blank pages at the end for your own notes.Content is adequate for its purpose -- for extensive details, the Oracle online documentation is available, if slower to access.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK as far as it goes
For those SQL*Plus keywords it contains, it's good. Very easy to use and helpful. What I'd really like to see is a more comprehensive reference that covers general SQL statements in SQL*Plus, without all the references to the other "flavors" of SQL out there (those weren't in this book, by the way). Exactly the same level of references found in the book now, but much more comprehensive, so I only need the one source for quick 'n' dirty query help. There were many SQL keywords and functions not found either here, or in The Complete SQL (not so complete, after all), making it difficult to move forward without looking elsewhere, like online using the search engine Copernicus.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great revision guide.
After 7 years solid experience within the ORACLE toolset I find that books like this not only teach us a few new things but are also great revision guides giving new thought to commands, formats, functions etc not used or thought of for some time.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to have
This is a really good book to have by an Oracle DBA for Oracle 10g reference. This book will help the Oracle DBA to identify and implement Oracle 10g new features. It has good tips for performance and tuning and setting up ASM. I give this book 5 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Presents Material in a great way
This book covers Release 2 of Oracle 10G. Concepts are presented in a clear manner. Each chapter can read in an hour or so. This is a great place to start for new DBAs. For experience DBAs, this a great book to get to know the New Features. Book is very easily read. Best book to learn Oracle 10g R2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best new book for Oracle 10g Application Server
I have a couple other books on Oracle 10g Application Server. This one beats them hands down for comprehensive discussion from install, design to administer the complex product. As an Oracle DBA I need to support this environment and found the book useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oracle Java apps step-by-step
This is a step-by-step walkthrough of Oracle App Server programming. It goes from application architecture basics through twenty-one chapters on using various APIs and services (with one on installation) to end on clustering and failover. Graphics are used quite heavily, often showing page by page use of various Wizards.
4-0 out of 5 stars No Oracle lock in
The 10g is Oracle's answer to IBM's WebSphere and JBoss. Wessler certainly wastes no time in delineating how you can use 10g to develope J2EE applications. There are some mundane chapters on installing and configuring it. Important, granted. But the crux of the book is the chapters on making and deploying web applications, EJBs and Web Services within 10g. If you look here, 10g seems to allow for any standard J2EE application to run within it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but...
The book has a wealth of ideas on tuning and queries for making sense of Oracle's tuning related views.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart.
It will come as no surprise to the experienced Oracle database administrator that making sometimes minor changes will significantly change the performance of the overall system. For this reason Oracle and various third party companies provide a series of tools to help tune an Oracle database for its best performance. This book provides a fairly detailed look at the problems, tools, techniques and philosophy of tuning an Oracle database.
5-0 out of 5 stars A holistic, platform agnostic approach to tuning Oracle
Despite new "self tuning" features in recent versions of Oracle, database tuning continues to be an essential part of the DBA skill set, but where do we acquire these skills? There is no substitute for experience, but once in a while there's a roadmap for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I used this book a few years ago when I began learning SQL. The book is pretty good. It helped me learn and understand sql. The book even talks about PL/SQL and Transact-SQL. Read it and pay close attention to the statements and you will get most of it. If you can download an oracle database software for free, install it annd practice what you are learning from the book. Practic helped me a lot to learn quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beginners beware of typos
This is a good book for beginners but also gets you on the path to more advanced SQL programming. However, beginners beware: I think I found a programming typo in nearly every chapter of the book. The most glaring to me was in Day 14 (p. 340) when a column named "NEW_TOTAL" was referenced in view LATE_PAYMENT (created from table BILLS).BILLS has an AMOUNT field but no NEW_TOTAL field.I have over 20 years programming experience and I had to disregard this entire example.I fear beginners will miss these types of mistakes. If this is one of the better books available (as stated by a previous reviewer), then I'm not sure what book to buy.No typos should exist in a book designed to teach programming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, lacks cd-rom and typos

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for any PL/SQL programmer
If there is any book which will "fine-tune" one's knowledge of PL/SQL, this is it. It is written in Feuerstein's inimitable style which will keep you engaged with the book much longer than any other peer book of it's kind. There is so much to learn from this book really - and it applies to beginners as experts alike. This book explores the tiniest nuts and bolts of PL/SQL in an exercise-like format which gives the reader a chance to ponder on the problem before he/she looks up the answers. And I must add, you are in store for a lot of surprises when you look up the answers in the second half of the book ! (escpecially in the experts' section)
