4-0 out of 5 stars worth reading.
Despite some unfortunate copyediting issues, this slim book has enough meat and asks enough important questions to make it worth reading. I like the way Morville meanders, and the book is valuable for the chapter on the socio-economic web alone. Just the same, somebody else might get as much out of a different chapter. Will keep this on my shelf and revisit in a couple years to see how things have turned out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped, overpadded, rapidly dating
Having seen the adulatory reviews of this book, I was looking forward to reading it. I have to say that I was pretty disappointed. "Rambling", "already dated" and "pseudo-intellectual" are three adjectives that come to mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good find
The first chapters take you on a tour from the beginning of language to Google. The last four chapters discuss topics including taxonomy, semantic web, and the emergent network culture. The book stresses user interface, which is as important as findability in the author's view point. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the future
If you don't own this book, then the world will one day 0wn you.Buy this book today and learn from the masters about the ultimate tool in the attacker's toolkit.Greg Hoglund's work is essential to computer security. It behooves us all to understand it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rootkit insights
One of the first books to go deeper in to rootkits of its kind. Not many books out there to give a understanding to IAT, SSDT, hooks, trampoline functions, and its relationship to rootkits.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for Kernel Driver Developer
This book tells me what RootKit really means. One useful thing I got from this book was that in Windows Kernel even simple code can be used against security. And that's it. Most techniques in this book are primitive to kernel developers. I don't recommend this book to serious kernel driver developers. "Windows Internals" and OSR Online should be the way to go. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
Principles of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets contains a great deal of information regarding economics in the United States. As a student, I find it to be poorly written. The authors/editors make constant reference throughout the text to other sections of the text. For example, we will discuss this in depth in chapter seven, but for now, lets reflect our continued study from chapter two and three. By doing so, we will be better prepared to read chapter eleven when we get to it. If the authors / editors left out the references and just left the actual information needed to learn the material, the student would be able to follow the material and perhaps understand the topic better. I am strongly encouraging our economics department to seek another text for future semesters. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Programmers and software architects don't really make a conscious decision to design an application (particularly one with online exposure) around the three-tier model-view-controller design pattern anymore. Three-tier, largely because of its adaptability and stability, is the norm. All of which means you need a database to underpin each of your applications. Designing your databases correctly can make the difference between slow-running, complicated code and software that's speedy, modular, and easy to work with. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Beginners Only, Could Be Shorter
This book is okay if you are a complete beginner or if you are interested in a consultant-like modeling methodology. If you have even a passing familiarity with things like field domains or records you may find this book too basic. It could have been about half the length. There is substantial repetition and a lot of ink given to hypothetical user interviews and documenting one's design. The author notes that the goal is to get generic concepts not the specific examples, but I would have liked more examples as illustrative of the applicability of the generic concepts. It's easy to say generically that a table should only include relevant fields--but more examples could help teach when and how and why to split up related things into separate tables. This book is very thin on that sort of example. The book is billed as a "software-independent approach" which it is. At the end, your design will exist on paper; you'll still need to learn an app like Access to create the physical database--and some things, like application-specific business rules get implemented at that stage. One more comment: it could be shorter, and it could use a glossary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rough Draft on Generalized Database
!!! Pathetic !!! ... excuse me, PATHETIC !
1-0 out of 5 stars Bad . . . just bad.
This book is not good.Where it could just give you concepts and syntax and an explanation of database structure, it goes on long-winded life lessons about how to interview people and other non-technical stuff.Maybe I am just partial to technical references over process books, but there is almost nothing of technical value in here.Written by a Microsoft guy, it continues the Microsoft tradition of hiding the computer from you instead of just teaching you how the computer works. It's like trying to teach someone tennis but not letting them know they have a racket in their hand.It describes how to swing in laborious detail, when it would simply be better to show you what you've got in your hand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars i love GHH
i have read tonnes of books on this subject.starting from secrets of a super hacker by knightmare(published way back in 94, trust me dat was a great read n even 2day i find myself glued to da back as the first time i read it.now coming back 2 gray hat hacking.this is wat i would like 2 call the hacking reference book for the next generation.every one concerned about security should consider picking up this book.u might as well save some money n picking up more knowledge than any of the hacking exposed books in the market.no this book is not for button clicking script kiddies who play around wid trojans n claim to be hackers or web defacers(lamers).if u belong to da breed of script kiddies pick up this disgustin book by ankit fadia (oh by the way ive reviewed it).i wouuld liek to congradulate the authors for the outstanding work put into this book.howeever it would be great to see expanded materials on various topics and a little more detail in tool description.its not bad but it could still be better.so as i said before get dis book u wont regret it.so kiddies grow up keep those hacking exposed n ankit fadias books apart throw em in da firplace burn em do anythin .but go get dis one
4-0 out of 5 stars Covers more than the typical hacking book
"Gray Hat Hacking - The Ethical Hacker's Handbook" is not your normal hacking book. This book should not be lumped in with the "Hacking Exposed" series nor the likes of "Counter Hack".What differentiates Gray Hat Hacking (GHH) from other books is the amount of code the book offers. This book is not for script kiddies, but instead shows how to advance to the next level of hacking (and, more importantly, prevention) by devoting over 100 pages to developing programming skills for both Linux and Window exploits.I had not encountered a book that dedicated this much space to scripting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy for every IT dept.
I bought this book from a store in D.C, and read it on my way back to India. I was impressed. Never found any book that deals with computer security and software vulnerabilities written so well. The reason I like this book is than others is because it does not only give you information that can help you in assessing your network security, but also gives you a basic introduction to the laws and legal technicalities. The contents of this book cover most of computer/network security related areas including technical implementation, planning, and defense. Therefore, it is not only for system engineers, but also for people managing IT departments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for webmasters or small business owners
If you rate a computer book on how well it succeeds at being difficult and obscure, you won't like this one.It skips the geek pretensions and just delivers useful information, in a way that is accessable to small business owners and webmasters. The screenshots may not appeal to everyone, but I found them incredibly useful because they allow me to quickly find the screen I'm working on.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Content
In a nutshell, Google's Analytics service is a web traffic analyzer and marketing performance manager provided for free to anyone with a Google account, but especially geared to those who participate in their AdWords program. This book serves as an introduction and walkthrough guide to Google's Analytics service for those that do not already know about it.The authors have written this title in a in a "for dummies" format, primarily for small web site authors and bloggers that have not had experience in web traffic analysis software before.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Find
Google Analytics is one of the best finds for those of us who find ourselves technically-challenged in a technically-heavy world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best C++ DS&A book
On my bookshelf right now I have 13 books on DS&A using C++. Every time I am in need of a new type of data structure or algorithm, and quickly scan through each of them to determine which seem to have the most relevant information, and also which have useable source-code. Drozdek's book is almost always the book I end up selecting to learn a new topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, easy to follow explanations and practical illustrations in C++
Although I have bought this book for its C++ emphasis for DSA, I have found it very good at teaching DSA itself. It has very clear explanations, well chosen examples, and depth enough coverage with along clear and easy to understand code illustrations in C++. The book teaches the topics in an incremental manner by making connections among different related DS and algorithms, which are helpful in understanding the theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars Contrary to prior belief
I had Weiss's book on dsa in c++, and this book surpasses it in terms of clarity and accuracy (both books are comparable in breadth and depth). The previous reviewer fails to notice that this book is about data structures and algorithms, and not C++ (although having a C++ book next to this one couldn't hurt either). So think of this book as a much better version of Weiss's book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dazed & Confused
This text was required reading in an Internet marketing class I took.As an about-to-graduate business major, I felt the book often strayed off it's subject matter (e-commerce) and too often went into excrutiating detail about how businesses operate.Although I did not read every chapter, the sections I did read were repetitive and confusing to follow. For example, the concept of "catalog content management" is defined and discussed at least three times in one chapter. To say this book is thorough is an understatement. There are many sections that could have been deleted with no loss of meaning to the subject matter. The book is probably OK for beginning business majors who have yet to take lots of business classes. However, for those who are more familiar with business, you will probably find yourself skimming over this text looking for the information you want.If you're looking for a general overview of e-commerce, this is not the book for you.If you want more detail than you thought existed . . . well, I'm selling my copy in the used book section of this site :)

5-0 out of 5 stars good materials for learing e-commerce

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I bought this book because it was assigned as the primary textbook for a database course. But I have also consulted this book in courses on data structures and algorithms, computer organization, operating systems, programming languages, and even knowledge-based systems (the section on data mining).
1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Book in the world! Not recommend!
Very very poorly written book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Databases
This book helps you understand how databases works. The second half of the book explains how data is stored (100 pages), how indexes are built (100 pages), query processing (150 pages), transaction management (100 pages), and durability and recovery (50 pages). This is one of the best book, if not the best, on database implementation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful and a good starting point
If you want to sell "stuff" this is a good place to start. All the information is here for opening a store. Follow the steps and your doors will be open. But maybe you don't want to sell "stuff" and have an idea you'd like to try out, if so I recommend "Internet Riches" by Scott Fox.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For the New Startup
This guy knows what he is talking about. I did exactly what he said when I was setting up my on-line business. The only thing was that this book didn't exist then and I had to learn it all one step at a time. Well, I guess that's the only way any of us learn anything.
2-0 out of 5 stars To basic and not enough practical guidance
This book was clearly for beginners only.Although the book says "for dummies", you'd really HAVE to be a dummy to get much out of this. The book is simply too vague when talking about important internet concepts and doen't show you how to REALLY get an online business going.I personally would reccomend 33 Days to Profits by Yank Silverwww.33daystoprofits.com as a much better way to get PRACTICAL advice on starting an online business. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!!
The idea of what the book is supposed to accomplish is great. I'm currently using the text in a class. It's not necessarily reader friendly and the instructor's resources are seriously lacking (errors in test bank - many, in textbook, no copies of textbook examples beyond image files - for instance, if the book shows a spreadsheet, the author doesn't provide you with the spreadsheet file, but an image of the spreadsheet - no kidding,). It could grow into my favorite series, if they tweak it and fix the errors, but it's so problematic at the moment, I might have to "can" it before next year. I would love to see the authors improve it. It's worth the effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this book led me out of the wilderness of R
After weeks struggling with poor and incomplete online documentation for the R language, this book was a breath of fresh air.The first four chapters alone, which give a broad and practical overview of the R / S / S-Plus environment, are worth the sticker price. In case it wasn't obvious at first (and it wasn't to me), R is the open-source implementation of the S language, and as the authors write in their introduction, "It is similar enough that almost all of the examples in this book can be run under R."
1-0 out of 5 stars just a large collection of examples -- no theory, no algorithm descriptions
I don't understand how this book received so many 5 star reviews. In my opinion, it is a complete waste of money, and totally unusable. It is simply a collection of example uses of S functions, with little or no background statistical theory, motivation, or justification for the methods used, and no descriptions of the specific algorithms underlying the S functions used. This promotes the horrible practice of using "canned" statistical routines without knowing exactly what's going on or how results should be interpreted. It was so frustrating to be forced to use this book for a class at UC Berkeley.Luckily I found a MUCH better book by Chambers and Hastie (from AT&T, where S was invented).I suppose if you're just looking for a large collection of "things you can do with S", this book might be okay for you.Personally, I was so appalled by this book that I sold it as soon as I found an excellent replacement (Chambers and Hastie, "Statistical Models in S".Chambers and Hastie is excellent!I love it!See my review).

This book is exactly what it says, a Beginner's book.Buy it if you are a real beginner but prefer something else even in case you are at the intermediate level. Now if you are a beginner with SQL Server this is a very good book.It is precise, with good examples and very explanatory. If I would have to point out potential future improvements, that would be using the AdventureWorks database for examples instead of the traditional Northwind. Also one more thing would be to explain more the new features of the SQL Server such as: Notification services, XQuery and Service Broker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Technical Book
I have never written a review about anything.I found this book so enlightening and so well written that I thought I owed it to the author to let others know how much I enjoyed the book.SQL Server 2005 has so many facets that it is hard to begin learning it own your own. This book has come to the rescue. It leads us through a lot of topics in a very logical progression. The examples are very well chosen and very easy to try out.(I actually typed in every single one of them myself--because that is how I learn.)What is incredible is how well the author keeps track of what he has already told us when he advances to a new topic.I am looking forward to the release of his new book "Professional SQL Server 2005 Programming."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great SQL Server Book -- Balanced, Practical, Comprehensive
I purchased this book for 2 reasons. First, I'm in IT and my organization uses quite a few professionally created small/medium SQL Server databases. While I'm familiar with the essentials of SQL Server administration, I wanted to know more about the data side to help me think through problems that arise as well has to help me leverage the data by using it as a source for other applications and custom build databases. I also just started creating small ASP sites and want to use SQL Server 2005 as the back end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and detailed
Zalewski offers a nice overview of passive information extraction techniques. Each section covers one approach to the problem of determining something about someone's computer use without being detected. He provides an overview of the technology involved and then talks about how to exploit it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This is one of those books that you go HMMMMMM!!! Very Interesting, but most of the things in the book are hard to understand. Also, he jumps around alot like if he's having a conversation rather than an inside manual to Attacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ages well
This is one of the few information security books that seem to age well: I reread it after over a year, and it still appears to be quite refreshing and up to date. This only goes to show the difference between books written out of genuine passion, and the rest. Big kudos to the author. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste Of Time
This is by far the worst business book I have read in recent years. It is hard to believe that Andy Grove actually thought that this material was worth putting into a book.As other reviews have said, this book at most should have been a short article in Business Week...but even then it would require some actual content to make it worth reading. The best part of the book is the quotes on the cover from Steve Jobs et al.It makes me wonder if they even read the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars save several valuable hours of your life- skip this book
Maybe I haven't read enough "management" books (though I do have an MBA), but if this is considered "great" for this genre- WOW. This entire book could have been summed up in a couple pages without losing any major points, but I guess you can't have a bestseller that way! One reviewer said it was too technical. Are you living in a cave? I found it condescendingly written- absurdly simple and dumbed down. Granted, it's over a decade old, but I doubt everyone was really that much stupider ten years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars All Fear the Status Quo
Andy Grove has verbalized the mindset that we must all develop to survive in the 21st Century. While his idea of constantly looking over your shoulder has always been applicable, the speed of the Internet economyrequires that we do it much more frequently and penalizes us much morequickly if we do not.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother buying this book
I am a high-tech marketing manager and an adjunct professor. From both the real-world business side as well as the academic side, I found this book to have little value. It spends page after page on general issues regarding Internet Marketing, and never gets to anything that could be used or implemented in the business world. Topics are explained without giving specific details as to how to implement the Internet Marketing idea. A very specific example is a description of viral marketing which the author refers to as "Creating a Wave." The short section goes on to say that free media, publicity and word of mouth are important. Of course they are. But how do you get them? I feel sorry for the students that are required to purchase this book. I guess they'll have to learn Internet Marketing on the job. I'm glad I only paid $10 for this book used instead of the $90+ list price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but dated
This is a classic. One of the most serious earlier works on the topic. Professor Hanson brought a very solid theoretical framework to Web marketing. The book came at a time when we finally all wanted to get more rigouros with the "New Economy". I perused it again recently for a seminar I am giving, and it is still an excellent reference book. I would give four stars to an updated edition. I don't know if they are planning it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A second edition is urgently needed
I used the first edition in one of my e-commerce courses. While the book migth still deserve 3 stars it is very much dated and my students had to do much additional research in the net to round most of the topics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Book has all you need to Quick start ABAP objects learning
The Book is good to learn abap quickly. Its practical approach is the key. The software that comes in CDs is self sufficient to execute the examples...no developer keys are necessary from SAP. Installation is smooth. I dont have previous versions of MS SQL server.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide.
For those who beggin programming with ABAP within a OO perspective, I think is the perfect guide. Of course itsn't a reference book but it's a excellent point of start ABAP having in mind an OO point of view.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE
In order to use the programs in this book you will need to obtain a developer key from SAP. In order to get a developer key you *must* have a SAP customer number ... if you do not already have a customer number buying this book will not get you one and so there is no way to work through the exercises illustrated.
