1-0 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough- lacks implementation coverage
I agree with one other poster that this book attempts to cover all major HA features in Oracle in one small book. It is ok for a very high level overview hence the 1 star but falls flat for major details on the individual HA features. Instead my advice is to get The Oracle 9i RAC book from Rampant Press, Oracle Streams book and Oracle Data Guard book all from Rampant Press and read the Oracle concepts manuals for these HA features.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for intermediate DBA's
It is one of the few good books available in the market which covers RAC, DataGuard and Flashback features all in one.
2-0 out of 5 stars Just overview of Oracle HA technology
The writers like to subsitute the Oracle manual in OTN but make no difference . eg, I wanted to setup the Dataguard through EM10g Grid Control. In fact , the creation standby database wizard was filled of bugs and user can't make use of it till patching and huge manual works. It's no doubt that writers never tried on this features. The book is rather splotchy and winding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional SQL Performance Book
'The Art of SQL' by Stephane Faroult is an outstanding book for any and all database developers that want to learn how to write better SQL code and make their database efficiency go UP UP UP!!Encompassing 300+ pages, this well-written and advanced book goes way past the basics of writing SELECT and INSERT statements, taking things to the next level and then some!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Most Unusual Technical Book
Imagine a cookbook with no recipes but after you read it it helps to become abetter cook. This book does not specifically tells what to do.It does not have codes or technical jargon. It gives you an understanding. The book reads well, it is not full of technical references but it is not to say this book is for someone who does not know the workings of a DBMS.The author draws a relevant parallel between designing a database and waging a war.I enjoyed the quotes thoughtfully peppered in the book.Do me a favor and do not get it...in case we are going after the same job

5-0 out of 5 stars This is your graduate level course in SQL - how and why
Probably most database solution developers and DBAs have picked up their knowledge of the subject as they have needed it, rather than in a formal and structured (so to speak) method. And even those that have had a structured education probably learned a lot more while in the field. And so there are always gaps. Gaps in technique, but also gaps in the why of many things that I, for example, took for granted about large DBMS's and SQL.

3-0 out of 5 stars For help with EnCase in book form, start here
I decided to read and review three digital forensics books in order to gauge their strengths and weaknesses: "File System Forensic Analysis" (FSFA) by Brian Carrier, "Windows Forensics" (WF) by Chad Steel, and "EnCase Computer Forensics" (ECF) by Steve Bunting and William Wei.All three books contain the word "forensics" in the title, but they are very different. If you want authoritative and deeply technical guidance on understanding file systems, read FSFA.If you want to focus on understanding Windows from an investigator's standpoint, read WA.If you want to know more about EnCase (and are willing to tolerate or ignore information about forensics itself), read ECF.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money even if you don't use EnCase
Problems with the DVD aside, in my opinion, this book is still worth the money. If you aren't ready for the EnCE exam yet, but are planning on taking a non-vendor-specific certification exam, such as the CCE exam, you can make good use of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Steve Bunting is the head of the police computer forensics unit in Delaware and, together with co-author William Wei, a computer crime detective in New Jersey, has written an outstanding book which should find a place on every computer forensic examiner's bookshelf - even the bookshelves of those who rarely, if ever, use EnCase as a forensic tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Serves Its Purpose
I am prompted to write this review owing to the number of negative comments I have seen. I personally read the book and I found it very informative and easy to understand. Axapta is a huge application and it is not very easy to understand, just as how math is a huge and deep topic. However, learning math helps if you understand the fundamental topics. If you miss the fundamentals God help you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book - get a copy today.
This is an excellent book.It is comprehensive and well written. This book should be read by anyone who is either considering purchasing Dynamics AX or has recently purchased the product. All new users will learn a great deal of information from this book.In fact, all good resellers of Dynamics AX should include a copy of this book at no charge with a sales quote to a potential customer. If I had this book two years ago, I could have saved my company several thousands of dollars in consulting fees alone. This book is an excellent `jump start' to gain overall Axapta knowledge, and is a great value for the money. This book will become a `must read' for all Dynamics AX implementers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying hard to cover everything... but....
At first glance the book looks very impressive and promising; however you don't have to read many pages before the cold truth of the authors' dilemma hits you. Covering a product as huge as Axapta in less than 500 pages is impossible, so choosing the right level of detail is vital. The authors chose the same approach as the online documentation shipping with the product. They describe in a clear and easy digestible language the most important forms in great detail. The online documentation has rightfully been accused of not providing procedural information (Step-by-step descriptions of how to accomplish tasks spanning multiple forms) or overview information (How everything ties together). Unfortunately this book does not provide that information either. Since the page count is limited one could have hoped non-trivial information was prioritized. That isn't the case. This book is however more than just a rewrite of the online documentation. It contains many valuable and interesting insights where appropriate. Don't expect this book to give you a lot of new information; but it gives you the opportunity to bring it all to the beach.

A tremendous resource, this book is a must, if you use FileMaker you will not find a better one-stop shop. This is definitely one of the best written and laid out books I have come across. Evans has compiled a book that gives newer users a step by step guide and more experienced users a resource to referrer to when need.In addition the writing style makes it easier for all and the excellent case studies provide scenarios that all users can learn from.Bottom line, get it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a central study guide
I bought this book along with the 'Exam Cram 2 Security+.' I found All-in-One to be a great book as a central reference guide. I went though this book taking notes in another notebook - basically taking the meat out of the 600pg book for later studying. I felt that reading it was important as well, since Gregory White provides several examples and good explanations that later provide a solid base for further studying.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. White Gets it Right
I used Dr. White's All-in-One guide as my primary text for the Security+ exam, and I passed on Monday with a score of 868 out of 900 (96.4%)
3-0 out of 5 stars Book 1 of your 1 - 2 punch
I read this book all the way through last month, just for the heck of it (I'll read any security book). Some chapters seemed too lightweight for exam prep, others (such as the chapters on crypto and PKI) were excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Book for MySQL 4.x users
This book is very practical and gives a clean insight for Power Users of MySQL. It also illustrates some concepts in brief and gets user going fast. Some of the topics like backups, load balancing are covered very well. In short following is what I can say in points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book overall, but may grow obsolete to MySQL5.
I mainly bought this book so that I could get some insight into 'advanced' Storage and Replication techniques w/ MySQL.
5-0 out of 5 stars A computer book actually worth reading
I read approximately 2 computer-related books a month, and have done so for the last 10 years. This book is the best computer book I have read in the last 5 years, hands down.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
I'm surprised at the rave reviews that everyone is giving this book.I have this book and I've been reading through it and it starts off fine as it has you build a simple application in the beginning.I found that promising because I've never used Lotus Notes before so I thought this would be an excellent book. The only problem is that once you're finished with that chapter, it goes from good to really bad.The book then becomes a reference manual for the different aspects of Lotus Notes. It provides no tutorials whatsoever as one astute reviewer on here points out.If I wanted this kind of reference I could have read the help documentation for Lotus Notes. This book is only useful for people who have mastered many aspects of Lotus Notes and even then its explanations of aspects like commands are dry and not put into context.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 words for a 5 star item
go and buy it NOW...!
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Own Book for All Domino Developers
Before I go any further, I have to disclose up front that I personally and professionally know all three authors who contributed to Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible (Brian Benz and Rocky Oliver, 2003, John Wiley And Sons, 1032 Pages, ISBN 0764526111). And Rocky, Brian and Richard will all tell you that I would still be the first one to call it like I see it, regardless of relationships. So with that in mind, to every person who works with Lotus Notes and Domino, regardless of version, and to every person who has ever posted to the Lotus developerWorks forum asking about good reference material for development: buy this book and put it on your bookshelf. I may approach coding somewhat differently than the authors, but that is the nature of all application developers. But this book does something often overlooked in too many technical books: it not only talks about how things work in Notes/Domino, it also puts out best practices and explanations for these best practices based on the authors vast depth and breadth of experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard!
I used this book to deploy Oracle Application Server 10g infrastructure on Linux and UNIX. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the handbook. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Administrative experience to use this book just a decent understanding of application design. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle Application Server 10g as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Job
I have taken the iAS 10 Admin I course from Oracle, and wish that I read this book prior to the class.I found it very valuable especially if you are deploying iAS 10g (9.0.4) on Linux.I highly recommend the book to iAS administrators/DBA's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Summary of the White Papers
As an administrator/implementor of these systems, there are many aspects to administering the 10gAS system. Although the authors do make reference the book intends to simplify the rather large amount of documentation, it falls short of a complete guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I highly recomend this book. I think it best serves those who already know the syntax of PHP, but it is a excellent book. I recomend either "Learning PHP" (The O'Reilly book) or "PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide" for a beginner. Both of these books will help you learn the syntax and concepts of PHP, but then it is best to move on to a book that gives practical examples, and this book excells at giving practical examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for getting started with php and databases.
By reading just the first 4 chapters I was able to create my own webpages using php and the mySQL database to store tables of data.It has some good example programs that you can follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Significant improvements since first edition
I have read the first edition of this book years before. This second edition has significant improvements. Core topic (classification, clustering, association rules) is very detailed and much easier to read. The author also add much material about advanced topics such as graph mining, multimedia mining, stream and time series mining, etc. Although these advanced topics are not as well writen as core topics, at least you will get idea about what's going on in these areas.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1 star is too much for this book
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this book. The book is put together by gathering some data mining concepts padded with tons of buzzwords to "teach" you about data mining. It really fails to teach you anything and it really succeeds to confuse the hell out of the reader. The language used on this book is the poorest I have ever seen in my entire life. The people how wrote this book and the publishers who published it should be ashamed of themselves. It is a shame that I had to pay for this piece of work because I have to read it for a course I am taking and I really dread opening it every week.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Data Mining Books

5-0 out of 5 stars Foremost book in the field
I had the previous version of this book as my text at USC. This version is a huge improvement over the last one. This one covers all the new advances and adds emphasis on the use of coding to communications channels. A complaint I had of the last version was that it under-emphasized coding gains and Eb/N0 vs. BER performance figures. This book has overcome many of those difficulties. It is still a bit ponderous in places but then it is the only book that covers the material in this much detail, truly a Bible of the field. It is a great graduate level text and a must-have book for any comm engineer. Charan Langton complextoreal.com

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful for both beginners and experts
a very detailed book for getting into Galois field arithmetics, cyclic codes, convolutional codes, ... As a very beginner I had no big problems understanding the content. I am not the type of guy who could understandjust by reading the theory - this book gives a lot of very useful examples,so you could call it fun reading it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent applications-based approach to Error Correction
Lin and Costello produced an excellent text which is targeted towardsengineers as opposed to mathematicians. The mathematics behind errorcorrection can be extremely intensive and, with other texts, I quicklybecome lost in complex proofs. Lin and Costello present error correction inmethod, with plenty of good examples, which those who need to know how toapply it can understand and the gory details of the theory are not asimportant. I used this book as my introduction to error correction and itcontinues to be a great reference book. The only drawback in it is since itwas published in '82, it stops at convolutional coding and does not covertrellis-coded modulation or turbo codes. ... Read more

This book does delve deep into the plumbing of ADO.Net 2.0, but I must admit that when I read the "Advanced Topics" part of the title, I thought that it would actually cover more complicated versions of some scenarios that might be found in "beginners" ADO.Net books such as handling many-to-many data relationships with bound controls and possibly designing and building a data access layer. While data access layers were covered to some degree, the described methods involved intensive interaction with SQL Server system tables - something I don't tend to make a practice of.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, missing practical use.
Great book for ado.net. I wish this book has covered "how to use new features of ado.net with business layer. There should be some more chapter(s) for data acesss layer utilizing ado.net.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for MySQL
This book is great for anyone getting started with MySQL.The book does an excellent job of helping the reader learn MySQL on both Windows and Linux systems, with most examples being run in tandem across both platforms. The books review of MySQL administration tools and clients is very in depth, and probably the best single-source coverage I have seen on the topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
This book opened up new database opportunities for me. Without it, I would never have unlocked the real power of MySQL 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect guide for database programmers
coming from the Visual Basic world (VB6, VB.NET), this book first helped me to use MySQL databases in my VB applications; later I had to make MySQL data available on the web and got used to PHP; again, Kofler's book provided excellent guideance in the various ways of interaction (mysql/mysqli) between PHP and MySQL

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Like most good books dedicated to buying and selling on eBay this book fits that category nicely. It is aimed at the more serious seller and goes into several deep layers on techniques and strategies to make your activities lucrative and profitable. In all I like this book because it does contain a lot of useful information at whatever lengths you decide to take you're your eBay activities. If you want to really get out there in the trenches, this book will accommodate that ambition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real "love-hate" relationship......
That's exactly what this book offers. You'll absolutely love the information the author offers, but you'll also hate yourself for not adding it to your eBay reference library sooner. The information discussed, and revealed, in this book will make you think, explore and create what you have wanted all those months you finally decided to be a successful eBay seller.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for powersellers & advanced users
The title of my review is not meant to suggest that this book won't work for beginners. It simply means that this is a book that ANY eBay user will be able to appreciate, even powersellers who assume there's nothing they can learn from a guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Image Analysis Book Review
I found the book to be very informative and I acquired several ideas from reading it. But, I repeatedly found myself searching the book for definitions of some of the terms it uses throughout its text. Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis will introduce new terms without any hint of their meaning, assuming that the reader already knows all they need to know about the subject matter (which would negate the need to buy the book!). This book sorely needs a glossary.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's just great
The book is just great! I used the source code from the CD-ROM for various image processing projects. The algorithms are also very practical if you have to deal with images. The code is neat and ready to compile and run.5-0 out of 5 stars Luis J Gutierrez

4-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed
In seeking out materials to train myself on Access 2003, I have found several books that have done adequate or good jobs of teaching the program. Most of them, however, did not do so well on teaching database theory or on instructing in how to use the native programming environment. This book helped to fill in the gaps. It is not perfect but it certainly was a good place to start.
