Editorial Review

PHP and MySQL go hand in hand; the former has been carefully adapted, through the efforts of the open-source community, to the latter. For situations that require dynamic content but don't merit the complexity and development time of Java or .NET enterprise applications, the PHP language and the MySQL database server fit the bill perfectly. That's the point Hugh Williams and David Lane make in Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly poor index
I'm new to PHP and MySQL, but a programmer for over 3 decades. I'm customizing some PHP code, using code examples for ideas. When I (a) see something I want to understand better or (b) want to find the PHP analog for basic functions, I naturally turn to the index to try to find the information I need. However, I found the index very disappointing because of what it doesn't have. For example, simple and basic keywords are not in the index: "comment", "logical operator", "and", "or", etc. I'm going to have order a different book as a PHP reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best starting point to php and mysql
I bought this book with the hope I could learn just enought to get me started with web application development. I only hadlittle programming experience at that time, I I didn't even have any experience with databases. Well. This book was the perfect introduction to web applications. From security to authentication, from php basics to multi-table join sql queries, this book got me into this world, and I appreciate it so much because I am working now in web development, thanks to what I learned from here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction Book & Reference
This book is an excellent introduction to PHP, MySQL, and the interaction of the two. It has a few chapters introducing PHP, then a few introducing MySQL, and then walks through the steps necessaryto build a functioning dynamic website. They also include an elaborate and detailed case study of a Winestore application the author's developed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The Chapters are really good and easily understandable. Point to be highlighted here is that the author has explained examples with SAP GUI Screen Shots. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great SD book for experienced consultants, too
I've been an SD functional consultant since 1993 and have recently started working on a very small project as the only SD consultant. Even though I've configured most aspects of SD, I haven't done it all, nor have I done it alone. Since I'm an independent consultant, this book has helped me to get a grasp of all that I need to do and what questions I need to pose to the client. This is the best SD book that I've seen - a definite keeper in my library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good General Reference
As the title, and most of the reviews (save Mr. Strauchs') suggest, this is the manual that doesn't exist in print. It's a nice alternative to the Help menu as it's written in a personable style that offers more direct and real-world applications for the basics of FileMaker.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, complete, yet easy to understand; well-done tutorials
Concur with all the other reviewers that this is THE best, most complete, yet easy-to-follow guide to FileMaker Pro [FMP]. The authors really have gone out of their way in using plain words to describe arcane concepts, and the illustrations are well executed. Although there are the usual typos and occasional ambiguous/misleading statements, there is a continuously updated website with 'Errata' and sample completed tutorial exercises. [If these were included on a CD with the book, this book would warrant a super-nova rating!]
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer that has been working with FileMaker for a while? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoff Coffey and Susan Prosser, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that explores each feature in depth, offers shortcuts and workarounds, and explains the ramifications of options that a FileMaker Pro manual doesn't even mention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview Without Getting Bogged in Details
One of my long standing complaints about computer software books is that they so often eliminate the first forty pages or so that explain just what this software is and what is supposed to do. This book (at 606 pages it's a lot more than forty pages) is essentially the front end description that explains what SAP ERP is and what it si supposed to do.
1-0 out of 5 stars What happened in the new edition?
This edition appears to be about 1/3 the size of previous editions; and refers to a fairly old version of SAP... even though this was released in Dec 2005.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Book, barely skims the surface
This book provides no real usable knowledge about SAP. There is absolutely no information on some areas, such as CATT's.And the areas that have some meat have only bologna. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Book for MySQL 4.x users
This book is very practical and gives a clean insight for Power Users of MySQL. It also illustrates some concepts in brief and gets user going fast. Some of the topics like backups, load balancing are covered very well. In short following is what I can say in points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book overall, but may grow obsolete to MySQL5.
I mainly bought this book so that I could get some insight into 'advanced' Storage and Replication techniques w/ MySQL.
5-0 out of 5 stars A computer book actually worth reading
I read approximately 2 computer-related books a month, and have done so for the last 10 years. This book is the best computer book I have read in the last 5 years, hands down.

Editorial Review

Good programming--which is to say, programming that yields both efficient code and a profitable life for the programmer--depends on not reinventing the wheel. If someone else has solved the problem you're facing (and someone almost always has), you'd be foolish to waste your energy figuring out your own solution. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MySQL For Applications Server
Excellent text well written and logical sequencing of chapters.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solves a lot of problems! (That's how it's organized)
I had a recent perl+mysql project and flipped between the Cookbook and the author's other work, MySQL, mentioned in other reviews.( also referred to the O'Reilly Perl books _Programming Perl_ and _Perl for System Administration_.I don't usually have time to master any topic or skillset; I need to get in, get it going, and move on.This book is perfect for that."How do I get the date?"There's a recipe for that."How do I get perl to connect to the database and insert stuff?" There's a recipe. Also for PHP, python, etc. It's really focused on problem solving, and the problems are really well chosen. This book will save you hours of effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Me!
I am a big fan of hands-on books.I especially like the `From Scratch` and `Cookbook` type titles.

5-0 out of 5 stars small and excellent
Very practical and after every command there is a very useful example.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, quick reference
This is an excellent reference to the MySQL language. It is faster to use than the online MySQL documentation, and can go anywyere. This is a better reference to MySQL than the O'Reilly book 'SQL in a Nutshell' (first edition), which left out many key MySQL commands and clauses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I'm always looking for a good MySQL reference. I find myself looking for the syntax of a particular command. This book comes in handy when looking for a particular MySQL command. For the size of this book, is really packs a ton of information. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not happy with the book
I've recently bought this book "Teach Yourself ABAP/4 in 21 days".I am not at all satisfied with book esp. with the sample programs given in the book. The present version available for ABAP is 4.7 where as the author has explained a very old version.I am not able to load the sample programs into my system given in the CD ROM which is supplied with the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly conceptual !!!
This is best book I came across in terms of concepts. For every concept there is a practical example .This is best way to learn instead of reading long boring sentences. This book is meant for beginners and those who already used languages like cobol, java but learning ABAP.However this covers only basics of ABAP in reporting. It doesn't cover dialog programming which is big area. However it is best beginning for someone starting ABAP/SAP career and I highly recommend it.Please note the version is abap 3.0 which is too old (now we have 4.7).However all the examples work in 4.7 so that is not big issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
Within 10 days of following this book diligently i'm able to code in ABAP. I'm sure i'll improve as I go on with this book. This is a very practical book that takes you through the ABAP code step by step. Learning SAP frontend was easy enough but coding in ABAP really needs a good guide, this book is written that way. If your intention is coding in ABAP/4 (which will definitely help you understand SAP more clearly), this book is the best that i have seen in the market. Cheers to the Authors once again. ... Bought the book in March 2002 and much to my surprise, this book deals with R/3 Version 4.0. 1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a power user book
I purchased this book sight unseen since it was referenced as a "Power-User" book. I've used Macs for the last ten years and consider myself savy but no tech-geek or mac expert. Yet almost everythingin this book i already knew, both in terms of mac use in general and 8.5specifically. To be fair, I did find a handful of useful tips or insightinto several areas i was less familiar with, but this accounts for maybe 5%of the book. On the other hand, if you are new to Mac and/or 8.5 this bookis excellent and I would give it a 5 star rating. For power users, it getsone star for the few tidbits it offers mac savy users. The included CD,like all book CDs, strikes me as pointless since its almost always out ofdate by publication time. For its steep $50 list price, the book offerspower users little value for their money.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for MacOS 8.5 users
At first glance, I thought that this was just another of those too little too late books that seem to be all too common. Not so, this has to be the first book I have ever had on the Mac Os, that is worth the purchase price. It covers all aspects of Apple's MacOS 8.5 and is a goldmine ofinformation. The book is also loaded with information on many usefulshareware and commercial applications that enhance the Apple systemsoftware and demonstrates many useful solutions that will greatly enhanceyour Mac operationsThe section on Applescript is excellent for people whoare using or learning to use Applescript, or for those who just want tounderstand scripting in general. This book also describes connecting Macsto various PC operating systems including NT and Window 95 this sectionalone is worth the price of the book. Having used Macs and Pc's for manyyears I was pleasantly surprised by this excellent resource. A must havefor anyone using MacOS 8.5. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book, but I wouldn't know
Got the book a while back from a non-amazon seller (but through the Amazon website). Communication between the seller and me was less than phenomenal, in that one day, the book just 'showed up'. Not a bad thing, but as a tracking-fiend, it was dissappointing not to have it tracked well. Book wasn't in flawless condition, it looked like someone had kindof slid it around a desk a lot (perhaps an artifact of their packing/shipping process), but was otherwise exactly as ordered. As for the content, well, I couldn't tell you - haven't had a chance to read it yet. Sorry 'bout that.

2-0 out of 5 stars Error-ridden and too little actual teaching
Not recommended, although some people like it a lot. More errors in the text than others, making you go to the web for errata pages.Relies too much on just presenting source code for the reader to type in, without adequate explanation of what the code does and why it's structured the way it is.Less of a gentle introduction than Hillegass's book "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X", less comprehensive than Anguish's book "Cocoa Programming".

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I really liked this book. It was very informative. Although published by HP Press, the book talks extensively about other Unix platforms as well as NT. The book is probably one year old by now, but I still recommend it. The authors cover almost every hardware option you can think of. A must read for any IT person planning an SAP Implementation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference on SAP Infrastructure
I highly recommend this book to companies that are going to start an SAP project. The book provides the foundation to design and build a solid technical infrastructure for SAP. Moreover, it is easy to read, covers every aspect, and is plenty of examples.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for beginners or experts
I wish that I had this book when we started our SAP project. This book will help anyone who is thinking about installing or upgrading SAP.It helps explain how SAP software will use the hardware. And how all of the pieces fit together.Even though this book is by HP press it stays true to the theme. They do try and "sell" HP hardware or solutions every once in awhile, but for the most part this book is generic in vendor. You won't go wrong with reading this book or just having it for reference the next time you have to upgrade your hardware or if you are having response problems and need to know how to evaluate your hardware. 1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had my money back.
This book was a waste of time and money. This is the worst technical book I have ever read. The second bullet on the the cover states, "Learn how to develop and intergrate the SD module with your existing SAP R/3 system.".This is very misleading as this book is nothing more than a high-level overview of SD and goes into no detail on "how" to develop anything.I also have the MM book by the same name and it also is worthless.

1-0 out of 5 stars No customising!
I should have paid more attention to the title. It's called "Administering" SAP R/3 and not "Customising". It explains how to use the different SD functions not how to implement them.Unfortunately, it cannot be recommended to users either because it is tootechnical and does not explain things in a comprehensive manner. There aresome books that emphasise the business process and help you decide how toimplement this in SAP. This is not one of them. This book is smack in themiddle of a no-mans land. It's no good for customising, no good for usersand no good for planning business processes.1-0 out of 5 stars Publication of the SAP online help!
This book offers no help at all in configuring the SD module.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the person needing process knowledge of FI or CO
I have ordered/read 6 books on the FI and CO modules in the last two weeks. My experience is that this book is the most detailed and beneficial of all.For someone who is looking to understand the process side of these SAP modules I would strongly recommend this book.If you are looking to learn more about the config, BUY A CONFIG book, not this one.The negative reviews seem to be related to the fact that people don't understand what this book is trying to accomplish (process understanding). If you have a medium understanding of SAP R/3 and a limited to medium knowledge base of accounting (internal and external) concepts, this book is a winner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless material
FI/CO is most popular and CO is the key module. In this book, nothing is helpful. I am very disappointed. I do not understand what purpose for the author to publish this book. Perhaps the author is very experienced, but the book is really useless in this field.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book
I found this 500-page book completely useless. The book doesn't have any (!) illustrations, it's plain text only, and it basically rephrases standard SAP OnLine Help.I found the standard SAP FI/CO Online Help morereadable than this book ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still a good book for me
I agree with many of the otehr reviewers out there: there's no real cookbook for BW, and this one complicates matters by trying to cover two versions at once. But for me, it's proven to be a great book because it doesn't assume I'm an expert. As a new member of an existing BW Support team, I don't have to ask as many "stupid" questions now that I has this. And I got a great price on a used copy!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Outdated
The book is outdated and based on BW 1.2B.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent overview, but confusing and not focused
Overall this is a decent introduction to SAP Business Warehouse. However, one of the biggest flaws of the book is that trys to overview two different versions. It would be much better if it simply stuck with reviewing against one version of SAP BW (preferably the most recent). It makes some of the concepts and movement through the BW interface very confusing because of the way it switchs back and forth between the two versions. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intermediate book
I found this a very useful adjunct to Stars and Child's book Learn Filemaker pro 7.Agree with the other reviewer that the screen shots are too small to read at a comfortable distance. Also unlike Stars' book the examples are not real tutorials. For me, I found the explanations clear and help me understand filemaker better.Would place SAMS Learn filemaker pro in 24 hr very low inmy choice of books for learning filemaker. It hindered my learning more than helped.Filemaker IS NOT a easy program to master. It takes time, diligence, lots of references and help from others.Avoid going it alone if possible.

2-0 out of 5 stars So-So
This is another UNvisual QuickPro Guide from Peachpit Press:the screen shots are way too small and must be viewed outside in bright sunshine. At about half-off list price, a case can be made for purchase, if you're a FileMaker junkie (like me). It's (unfortunately) intermediate level, not advanced (as it claims). It covers indexing options, conditional valuelists, textstyle functions, mass update of serial numbers, script parameters, bulk e-mail, importing with scripts, and communicating with a Palm. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Informative But Poorly Written
There's a lot of relevant information in this book, but the authors have a repetitive, rambling, and sometimes vague style that makes it anything but a pleasure to read. You really have to work to sift the wheat from the chaff here.It could be easily condensed to half its size without losing any information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written
I don't normally comment, but I don't know what book the reader from Minn. was reading. I'm guessing he meant to review a different book. This is not a "German" book at all. This is the clearest, best written bookon SAP I've read, and I've read most of them. If you need an introductionto the business logic behind SAP, this is the book to buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Need English Version?
This is my third book on SAP R/3. This book is another example of poorly written book on SAP. Though the topics are categorized very carefully and intelligently, the text in the book is in the language that requires'translation in English.' The terms are either ill defined or if defined, then they have been used inconsistently. It was hard to get out the conceptbehind a topic, since authors give scattered information without focusingon main idea. Also, authors could have written the business processes (SAPmodules) in more like step-by-step (or recipe) method, rather than in'composition' format. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
An excellent book that gives a good insight of the business processes and business objects of different SAP R/3 modules. I urge the author to write a new edition of the book that reflects the recent development in SAP.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent high level overview
My company has been an SAP customer for years, but there was still a lot of mystery about what SAP is and why it's good. This book lays it out in perfect terms, integrating both the C-suite point of view and the IT perspective. I highly recommend this book to anyone working with SAP. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars FileMaker Pro 6 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh: Visual Q
Don't waste your money on this one. Although titled "Advanced" it assumes the reader is a total idiot and absolutely unfamiliar with FileMaker. Steps are spelled out so painfully click by click that it is impossible to follow what is being explained. The screen shots are too small to be legible. A real waste of money and printing paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
Wow!
2-0 out of 5 stars Only Somewhat Helpful in Mastering FileMaker
I've purchased numerous Peachpit Visual Quickbooks. Most of them are excellent. This one, however, is deficient is some respects. The most glaring problem is the puny size of the screen shots--you need a magnifying glass to see them! Also, the book is not coherent; it starts off with a fine concept for a school course/student/instructor database, but then doesn't work with this example throughout the book. There are no sample files on CD or diskette or on a Web site
