It would be a MUCH better book with a different title
While this work may be "The Official Guide" it is a long way from complete or authoratative. It is much more of an overview than a guide. It is an excleent overview or enhancements book for readers with a technical background.
A great TECHNICAL review of DB2 UDB V8
This is a great book for what I do. I needed to keep on top of the new features in DB2 -- though for the wrong reasons (we are an Oracle business partner), I def'ly got to see all the new features with deep technical explanations and even examples; pretty neat stuff from IBM I must say. I looked at the What's New Guide that was referenced in other comments before buying this book, hoping to save a buck. Too bad they don't have a review forum for that book, horrible. All marketing fluff. Don't bother trying to find it -- it will only make you mad. Buy this book.

Good Book for Exam 700
I took the exam within one month from the day I bought this book and scored 87%.Read the book twice and took the sample test on IBM site.

Just what you need
Great book. covers everything you need to know for the exam. Completed one chapter each day after reading the tutorials on the IBM site and gave the questions at the back. Wrote the exam on the 8th day and got 92%. Will definitely recommend the book

Worst Book
When I first started with DB2, this book was recommended to me by someone who read the v7.2 book by the same authors.This was the most confusing techie book I have ever read.Amongst all the typos, my biggest gripe is the index.You may as well rip the index out of the book because it is useless.There hasn't been one time where I wanted to look something up, referring to the index, and found what I was looking for.Its like a 900 page book with a 7 page index... useless.

NOT a good book
So it claims that Chapter 1-8 covers the objectives for Exam 700. It should have said - and MORE, SO MUCH MORE. Which borders on garbage.

Not for Mainframe DB2
I should have done my homework before i bought this book. If you are using db2 on the mainframe im not sure you will find this book too helpful as it caters to windows and linux users. Im very new to db2 and did not find this book that helpful as far as laying down the basics.

DB2 Simplified
I found this book extremely comprehensive.The use of screen captures in partnership with textual descriptions are so much better.Bravo to those who took the time to create a fantastic learning and reference tool!

The book lives up to its name
This book has something for every level of DB2 expertise from beginner to intermediate to expert.The books name implied there would be lots of visual images and the books was loaded with charts, pictures and screenshots.These make learning about DB2 much easier and more fun, than reading plain text. Best book available for DBAs working with DPF
I used this book to write Exam 704 (Advance DB2 UDB DBA certification). I cleared the exam with flying colors.
Absolutely the best DB2 book!
I just found this book, and after reading it wish I had found this years ago.This is the most comprehensive book on DB2 that I have ever seen.This book has already saved me a lot of time. The performance chapter is great and helped me improve the performance of my DB2 server by over 30% in less than a week.

Best book on the subject
Besides getting you ready for the certification examination this book is an excellent reference source and covers some material far better than other similar books on the market. If you only want to buy a few books on this subject, start with this one. You may find you don't need any others.

This is an excellent book that gives an overall picture of what to expect for the z/OS 702 Examination. The certification portions have all been covered well. Except for a few typos in a few places, this book is an excellent material and is a handy book for a DBA. I certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to pursue DB2 702 certification.

Excellent Book but Nearly Obsolete!
This is a title that's desperately needed, but it's November 2005 and DB2 is bordering on version 8.3 or 9.1 already. Where's the update? I know, I know. People say 8.2 isn't THAT different. I disagree, especially if I'm going to shell out $30 shipped.

I truly got my money's worth from this book...I passed 2 exams based on this book's study guides and practice tests.Especially wonderful tips are included for areas they like to pose 'trick' questions on to make sure you know the difference between ORDER by and GROUP by, for example.Those tips were right on the money.It made it easy for me to refresh my skills and very confortable with what the tests were like, so that did not add to my nervousness.It is true they don't have the most up-to-date information....they should keep it up and come up with the new version 8 features, and a book for the Advanced tests. ... Dated material, but extremely solid basics
When I used to work at Oracle, these books were our bibles.I had tolearn a great deal about Oracle in a very short time (I knew extremelylittle about technology, and didn't know a database from a ring ding). These books are remarkably thorough, and go into a lot of detail.Theadded benefit is that they are extremely widely read by Oracle developers(both working for Oracle and not), that they get TONS of feedback, so anyinaccuracies, development or new ideas/tricks get back to the publisher andoften get incorporated in new editions.The Oracle series is general is agreat foundation to start with for Oracle knowledge.The thick whiteOracle PL/SQL guide is also extremely good, and comes with the serversoftware.I believe that it is more easily available in soft copy, asOracle is trying to limit the documentation that they distribute with theirsoftware.

OLD but GOOD
Hey they are right; it covers Oracle 7 perfectly but there is Oracle 8 and now Oracle 8i.But for the basics, well this is a great starter.It will explain how to tune Oracle and why; after that get another and explore

Very good Intro to DB2
If you aren't a database expert and you want to learn DB2, this book will do it.After using this book, you will be able to use DB2 very effectively.The authors did a great job. Horrible customer service at publisher of the Dummies books
The book itself might be fine. I don't really know yet as I've been waiting for TWO WEEKS to get a replacement CD for the defective one that came with the book. The problem with the CD is that once you uploaded DB2 from it, you couldn't actually USE DB2 because you get a 'license has expired' message whenever you try to create or DO anything with the software. An error that could have been caught if ANY Quality Assurance had been performed. I called the 800 number they give you in the back of the book (800-762-2974) and got the 'Wiley Customer Care Center'. Red flag goes up. The guy on the phone was responsive, no problem, they'll send out another CD. But "Oh yeah, I think they fixed that problem"? One would HOPE so you know? 8 days later I get an invoice in the mail confirming that I've ordered the CD. They say to allow 7 business days for it to arrive. On the 8th business day, I phone back. "It was sent on the 7th (the day after my initial phone call), give it another couple of days." I gave it another couple of days. No CD. I phone back. My third call. "We don't have that CD in stock." They couldn't tell me this TWO WEEKS before? The lesson here? DON'T BUY THIS BOOK NEW. Buy it with a CD that has already been used. Or, if you buy ANY 'for Dummies' book new (that comes with a CD), phone 800-762-2974 to find out if there are any 'problems' with the CD FIRST. They found a CD lying around for my copy of 'DB2 for Windows for Dummies' but they "couldn't" overnite out to me. I have to wait another 7 business days for them to send it out by hitchhiker.

DB2 Certification Guide
Almost new. Perfect Guide to clear DB2 UDB Fundementals Certification

Not sufficient for Test 513
The book is quite detailed and is best for beginners or for professionals working in some other RDBMS and wanting to swith to DB2. It should also serve as a good reference book.
Good book
Read this about 3 times and realized that some critical information were missing out. I passed my 512 without any sweat and struggling on 513 with the help of this book. Thus, i gave it 4 stars. The information and questions in this book are way too easy for 513, so don't count on those questions. Consider them as warm up and getting your engine to run.Read more

Falls Short
Book gives a great over view and lays out a common sense approach to performance.Each chapter opens up talking a good game but then falls short of the expectations that it has set. DB2 High Performance Design and Tuning
This text has more insight than any other text I have read on tuning a mainframe DB2 system. The text sometimes seems disjointed, but in trying to cram all of the authors combined knowledge and experience into one text and trying to give it some order, is daunting. I would have to say this text rates a bit higher on the scale than DB2 Developer's Guide by Craig Mullins because it is not trying to cover all of the bases that Mr. Mullins is in his book. This is strictly for giving pointers on tuning DB2 in a mainframe OS/390 environment. I hope the authors combine their efforts and put out a true "DB2 for OS/390 Certification Guide" so we DB2 DBAs can train newcomers to the field. Their latest effort falls short of that.

Mr. Yevich tells all
Now that I have your attention -- I must confess I have not yet seen this book.But Richard Yevich has consulted my organization on a complex DB2 system, and I would say that his collaboration on this book should guarantee useful insights.Read more

Not Complete -- but pretty close
I'm looking for a desk reference this is it. However, no V8 -- wonder why?

This is not complete by any means.There are many times I have had to go to the internet to find information that is not in this book, including basic features such as functions that are missing and details regarding data types.I could understand if it was missing advanced concepts, but it is missing introductory information.

NOT a good book
I am pretty sure even exam 706 (of which I did not review the objectives) will not ask for ALL the parameters for the dbm? It's unweidy to paste a total of 12 pages on the dbm cfg parameters.
You must do the problems
In the world of large commercial databases, there are really only two choices: IBM's dB2 and Oracle. While MySQL and Postgres are increasingly try to break up this cosy duopoly, they are still small players. So as a professional DBA, or an aspiring one, dB2 is a good choice. Given this, IBM provides several levels of certification. Sanders here supplies the official study guide for the 701 and 706 exams. Excellent Certification Exam Study Guide

Great structure but many errors in examples
This book is great for DB2 beginners. It has right structure, covers material in sequential order and does not talk much about insignificant matters just to increase the volume, like many other books do. In my view, only one but significant flaw doesn't allow me to call this book exellent - lots of errors and typos in the examples. They are mostly insignificant but very confusing for a novice. I hope the author sorts them out in the second edition which this book definitely deserves. ... Read more
