5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for your blue belt
Everyone who wants to write OO code needs to read this book. No, let me re-phrase, *must master* this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An approach to this software classic
"Design Patterns" (GoF = Gang of Four) is a signicant and, in many ways, a difficult work for the modern reader (me) to digest. The material in this book is highly self-referential: to understand a particular design pattern, it is important to be familiar withmany similar, if not all, design patterns.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic for OOP - truly a Gem - not much else to say
Like many of the typical Computer Science classical texts, you've got to read it, if only to say you read it :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource - but not for the novice
Truly Matt Pharr and NVIDIA are at the top of their game, and his "GPU Gems" series is certainly the only one of its kind for graphics professionals that are familiar with GPU's and shading languages already, and want to exploit them for the maximum speed and effect achievable using today's technology. It is not a "how-to" book on shading or GPUs or even advanced graphics. There are equations and code interspersed throughout the book, with bits of wisdom that are very instructive for the initiated. However, if you are a home-grown graphics programmer who knows C, or C++, or Java, and even some assembly language, plus you are familiar with image processing and computer graphics techniques, that will probably not be enough to get you through this book. I would say that this is a five star book for high-level professional graphics programmers who work with GPU specifics and shaders daily, and I would say it is a two or three star book for everyone else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Second Book in the GPU Gems Series
This book is the second installment of the GPU Gems book series by NVIDIA. Just like the first book, GPU Gems 2 is a collection of articles by various authors from game development companies, academia, and tool developers on advanced techniques for programming graphics processing units (or GPUs for short). It is aimed at intermediate to advanced graphics developers that are familiar with the most common graphics APIs. The reader should also be proficient in C++. As with the first GPU Gems book, GPU Gems 2 is not for beginners. For professional graphics and game developers, however, it is an excellent collection of interesting techniques, tips, and tricks.
2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures
This book is targeted at people who have a good solid grasp of either OpenGL or D3D as well as a grounding in programming languages such as C/C++ or Java. While this much is obvious, the book is still painfully difficult to get anything useful out of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best handbook for programmers EVER!
The authors were very modest in choosing their title.Yes, indeed, they focus on the scenario of writing reusable libraries, and write from the perspective of two of the designers of the .NET Framework. However, the utility of this book goes far beyond what the title implies.
5-0 out of 5 stars invaluable to developers of class libraries, components, and frameworks--whether .NET or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars still definitive after 20 years
For twenty years, this book has stood as the definitive text on compiler design. Many programmers use a compiler to write programs. Only a small subset actually write [or debug] compilers. It is for the latter that the book is dedicated. Though perhaps the broader group of programmers could also benefit ["culture"] from knowing the general ideas in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely useful
This book covers many aspects of programming the ARM familiy, including a surprisingly thorough discussion on fixed-point DSP computation.
3-0 out of 5 stars If your company will buy it for you, get it
In the ARM tradition of charging for everything, thefirmware guide by Sloss is easy to read, and comprehensive up to ARM10/StrongARM XScale/926/940.That said, the book looks like the notes from a firmware lecture delivered by an Arm Apps engineer. The book is strongest in coverage of MMU and cache, but weak on ARM11 (1136 only and as a final chapter) and essentially non-existent in Jazelle coverage.Nice features are the toy RTOS which appears early at reappears with more features (memory protection, and MMU, for example). That this book is so quickly out of date brings the point that MDR bulleted last year, that the ARM family needs birth control but that is a topic for another discussion.Sloss' book has 'non-commercial license' for all the sourcecode.huh?Regarding this book, Freescale for example publishes equivalent information (old ESS manuals) in the 860/8260 training manuals for free, on their website. If your company pays for your books, by all means have them get the sloss book for you it makes a great read on the john, but if you are a student or independent developer, you would be as well served by studying the ARM ARM and applicable ARM source code for U-Boot, Redboot and the L4 microkernel, or even Ed Sutter's book, with the added benefit that you would have a license to use the code in your project.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 Stars
If you are developing something that contain an ARM core.... this is definitely the BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Simple
This information in this book is simply presented and very easy to apply.
5-0 out of 5 stars Information packed
Most texts on software testing have a chapter or two which describe test design techniques. This is the first text that is devoted exclusively to this subject. There is little in the way of theory. The text is practical and provides the software test professional with clear explanations and examples of test techniques that have been proven to be effective.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Critically Important Read for Software Test Engineers
Lee Copeland's book, "A Practitioner's Guide to Software Test Design" provides an easily read introduction into a critical but often ignored subject. As those familiar with the IEEE Standard for Software Test Documentation (IEEE-Std-829) know, Test Design is the first step in turning the "What" of the Test Plan into the "How" of test execution. The IEEE Test Documentation lifecycle is Test Plan - Test Design - Test Case Development - Test Procedure Development - (Test Execution) - Test Summary Report creation. Many test engineers proceed directly from Test Planning into Test Procedure creation, and do Test Design implicitly as opposed to explicitly. This can have a negative impact on an effective test program. This book clearly shows how to implement the test design process described in Drabick's book "Best Practices for the Formal Software Testing Process".

5-0 out of 5 stars Best practice for application software design
unlike many other books focusing on how to use a technology, or illustrating what is basic OO concept, this book focus on how to analyze and solve day-to-day application design issue. It has summed up many best practice and distill them into more concise and easy to understand building block abstraction. The style of writing is very easy to follow. It also makes me interested and want to read more, unlike other dry-reading book that make me sleep.I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in making a coherent and maintainable design for large system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading.Period.
I just finished reading this book by Eric Evans on "Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software."Domain Driven Design should really be required reading in college, in my opinion.Eric Evans has a way of describing benefits of rich modeling techniques and how to develop them.He guides you through learning to develop the ubiquitous language of the domain, an important concept for effective modeling. He also addresses many common concerns such as scalability with the techniques in the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Might be good: could not finish
I must admit, I haven't finished the book. I find it nearly unreadable. There might be some crumbs of useful wisdom, but the boredom reading the book sent any brain cells to sleep that could absorb that wisdom. If the book would be condensed to - say -- 250 pages, it might be useful (did anyone edit the book?).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, right price
Beyer & Holtzblatt have done an excellent job describing the process of contextual design.I'm currently implementing a new company-wide business process, in conjunction with co-workers,and thought it would simply be a good idea to both refresh my memory, gather ideas, and form concepts that would be helpful in the organizational design process. This book has undoubtedly served the purposes I've wanted it to. Again, excellent book - worth the buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pragmatic RUP Introduction
There is plenty of theory written about RUP, but how it should be applied to your role or your project is often misunderstood.
5-0 out of 5 stars You need this book if you're doing RUP
This book does a great job of showing steps of practical application of the RUP.The book may seem repetitive on a few points, but I feel the points bear repeating. This book has been invaluable in helping cut through the misinformation thrown around by some who have gotten the executive summary of RUP and know just enough to be dangerous. I recently completed a seven-part online course on the RUP that was based on this book. The book did a far better job of making the RUP understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to understand RUP
I teach RUP classes in Brazil and the most difficult thing for the students is to understand the core practices of RUP(what I like to call Agile RUP) without getting swallowed by all the details of the hundreds activities, artifacts, roles, guidelines, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Study a good self improvement software engineering method
The book is good, every argument weel written with simple language and lesson tailored. PSP is a good set of processes to use in software development. If you wish to self study PSP it is good but you have to download a lot of material from the SEI website (exercises, workbooks and so on). Humprey write about process extensions but not so much as needed in practice. Also a more detailed description about PSP processes isn't present on the book so you haveto read about on SEI website material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Applies well in some but not all situations...
As an IT professional and software developer, I'm all for standards and processes.PSP - A Self-Improvement Process for Software Engineers by Watts S. 4-0 out of 5 stars review before compiling?!
The intent is to reduce the defect rate in software. With an emphasis on doing this when we have several million lines of source code. All the more so if the application might involve safety issues or be critical to its company's bottom line.

Editorial Review

This textbook provides a basic introduction to the fundamentals of current computer designs. As the title suggests, the text skirts the border between hardware and software. After an overview of the subject and a discussion of performance, the book launches into technical matter such as instruction sets, how they are constrained by the underlying processor hardware, the constraints on their design, and more. An excellent critique of computer arithmetic methods leads to a high-level discussion on processor design. Following is a great introduction to pipelining, nice coverage of memory issues, and solid attention to peripherals. The book concludes with a brief discussion of the additional issues inherent in multiprocessing machines. The extremely lucid description is grounded in real-world examples. Interesting exercises help reinforce the material, and each section contains a write-up of the historical background of each idea. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn how to write useful requirements
I decided to read Mastering the Requirements Process (2nd Edition) because, while I am an experienced software developer/consultant, I have always struggled with writing requirements. It's not the writing itself that I find difficult it's the feeling that I'm wasting my time. You see, while I know that well documented requirements are critically important in any project, I often feel like I'm somehow missing the point when I sit down and struggle through a requirements document. I don't mind working hard and I don't mind wasting time but I can't bear the though of working hard to waste time! So, I was excited to read "Requirements are not meant to place an extra burden on your project. Instead, they are there to make your project run more smoothly" in chapter one. Yes! Exactly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective, highly scalable process for documenting software requirements
From my experience and industry research, poor quality or insufficient requirements documents cause problems in the majority of software projects. This applies whether buying a package or commissioning development. Learning and carefully following the process in this book is the best way I know to eliminate this risk, as 8 years of experience has shown me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive CMMI Blueprint
I would have to say that the presentation of the material within this manual is one of the best I have seen. The first 5 chapters of the book provide an excellent introduction to the model, descriptions of the process areas and their relationships to one another, guidance for institutionalization and finally instruction on how to tie all this together. Chapter 6 provides some information on other models and their similarities and differences as compared to the CMMI. The case study in chapter 7 is a very useful overview of how the CMMI can be implemented in a real world scenario.
4-0 out of 5 stars Complete
This book is all the technical reference one needs in a CMMi environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars mostly official documentation
I tend to agree with reviewer Keefer, who pointed out that much of this book is taken with minor changes from the official CMMI 1.1 documentation. Perhaps the only saving grace is that to some people, a book is still preferable to learn from than a computer screen.
