4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I have seen some reviews that said this can't be used to learn Photoshop from the ground up, but that is untrue, because I used this book to teach myself Photoshop with absolutely no prior knowledge whatsoever, and it does a wonderful job of explaining everything. It pretty much covers everything, and I consider it a must have. The only reason it may not be for someone is if they don't learn well from just reading; that, I admit, is a downside of this book. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand what they are talking about by just reading the instructions. If you are sitting by the computer though, it's very easy to follow step by step. If you choose to buy a book with lessons, such as classroom in a book, then I definitely recommend this book as a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Great Book!!!
I'm a member of an online gaming community and I was wanting to learn how to make my own "Sigs". After a few hours of reading I was able to use layers to make my first kool looking sig. I also was able to use Photoshop for all the graphics on my web site. If you want to learn to use Photoshop, then this book is a MUST have...

5-0 out of 5 stars Bloody awesome
I took my test today and came close to maxing out, 972....study hard the reviews at the end of the book. When taking the test, read the questions AND answers carefully, kind of like the old school days, an answer may "look" right but it could be one word off. Keep the books, don't resell them, I've already gone back into 70-271 and reviewed a few things. handy to have on hand when you deal with it every day.Very thorough in my opinion. Just a humble IT geek working on his certs.....

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW Great deal and Super Helpful
I just took this certification and found out that some of test questions were the same as the back of this book.If you go through the test bank in the back of the book and go through the lessons your sure to pass. The book also comes with 180 day trials of xp pro sp2 and office 2003 professional. Not to meantion you get a voucher for 15% off the exam.I will warn you that some of the exam questions are very easy and others are super tricky.

3-0 out of 5 stars Act Quickly
This book came with a free trial of Office 2003. (The book for the 70-271 exam has the XP Pro trial as stated in the editorial review) When I tried to install the free trial it had already expired. Apparently, the free trial begins when the book is purchased, and not when the software is installed. Therefore, if you wait to install it you will not get the full 180 days, and the 180 days includes the time it takes to ship the book to you. I really needed the free trial. I was saving it until I needed it, and I ended up buying Office Professional 2003 instead. Oh well, the book gets a 3 anyways because it needs supplemental material to prepare for the exam. (but don't they all?) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars REALLY HELPFUL!
I was used to an InDesign software from far ago, the dinosaur era. When got the newest version, was at a complete lost. This book explains in easy words EVERYTHING! Adobe's software is great, but their manuals can be used and understood by those with an IQ of 300 up. Am grateful for this book and fully recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars quite boring
Technically, this will teach you how to use indesign. But it's so boring and repetitive. It's like memorizing a list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be
I've used Visual Quickstart books for years, and until this one they've been extremely accurate. This one contains what seem to be screen caps of menus and options from some previous version of InDesign, so you have to look around for the options someplace else if they've moved.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but problematic....
I just passed my 70-271 exam and I do believe this book was an important factor in my score. However this book is problematic.
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't use this book as a primary study guide
There's a lot of unnecessary info in this book that you won't even see on the exam. The practice questions in the book are way too wordy and confusing.Exam Cram has helped me in the past, but not this time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book, it's awful.
I believe my email to the editor explains it all.I have copied and pasted it below.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter but a little thin
This VQS book gives a great high-level of a broad spectrum of functionality of Flash but does not go into much detail. Good starter book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
Adobe and Macromedia both write excellent software but both have two things in common - the lack of being user friendly and intuitive.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must if you need to pass the first time.
Depending on your experience this may be the only book you need to pass the 70-721 exam. I did require additional material but this book was certainly the major reason that I passed the exam with a 917 score.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding XP
It is worth every Penny you spend. I will refer back to itfor years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Workplace Compliance Purchase
I am within hours of retiring from "Corporate America." Then, why would I purchase such a boring piece of reading material? The answer is, the yuppies who run the company think they are doing us a favor by making us learn about technology that will be obsolete in weeks. Even worse they require the cost of that training to come out of our own pockets. I needed a training package to get a better review and a small bonus. After taxes the bonus was only three times the cost of the book. Whoopee! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My first choice for a manual replacement
The Visual Quickstart series is, in my opinion, the best replacement for a manual, or for those excuses for a manual that appear in software boxes. The Photoshop Elements book fits that need to a T. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Format, Good Writing, Good Book
I like the format of the Visual QuickStart Guides. Generally speaking, the pages are divided into two columns. The outside column has a headline explaining what the page is about and text to describe how to do it, and perhaps include a bit of explanation or a Tip. The inside column has a screen shot of what the monitor should look like as you do that particular operation. This is combined with an index that directs you to the page based on what you need to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
Although I am usually not a big fan of the Visual Quick Start series I really like this one.Mr. Alspach certainly knows what he is writing about.Written in a clear, pleasant way without the unnecessary stupid jokes you encounter far too much in computer books these days.Great coverage of all the basic and intermediate Pagemaker stuff.Good as a study book and very good as a reference book. If you are a beginning or intermediate Pagemaker user needing a book to support you when you are using Pagemaker, buy this one.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guide to Illustrator CS
I purchased this book upon the recommendation of my professor for a college class in Computer Design. It is my first experience with the Visual QuickStart Guides and I am very impressed. It has been a valuable tool in helping me understand and use this previously unfamiliar software application. The table of contents is clear and well organized and the index is very extensive--I refer to it constantly. The book uses many illustrations with clear instructions and explanations. Commands and shortcuts and given for both Mac and Windows. I would definitely purchase another Visual QuickStart Guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
this is a good reference book if you don't need to go to deep into the program.I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS and a few of the things confused me i.e. how the text to path tool works....so I bought this book as a quick reference and it has done a great job of fulfilling that purpose.
5-0 out of 5 stars Visual QuickStart - Illustrator CS

5-0 out of 5 stars Robin WIlliams sets the future archetype for technology training
I cannot say enough good things about this woman's writing. She breaks the normal rules of teaching by rote, instead helps to impart a holistic understanding of the pros and cons of the technology, and thus it becomes obvious how to use it to the best effect. I have taught seminars using her books as reference materials, and recommend that everyone should own this book who uses a computer. Most people today learn technology by rote, this does not give a person the understanding necessary to face different software versions, or even different challenges that pop up everyday in the workplace. Many books written on technology are only good as doorstops, as they perpetuate the step by step learning by rote crap. This book, very thin and unassuming in it's length, get's in a user's brain like yeast and expands to help them to be able to comprehend WHY things work the way they do. I hope she writes a lot more books, especially one for Windows users, like her Little Mac Book. She deserves to be famous, successful, and prosperous.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very outdated but still of some use for beginners
I did pick up one or two useful hints in this book. If you haven't managed to figure out for yourself that two spaces after a full stop (period) just looks plain stupid, then you will probably get a lot of utility from this book. As other reviewers have said - it is extremely short and light on content - you'll probably read the whole thing in an hour.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful but an extremely short book
Not counting the introduction and appendices, the content is less than 50 pages. There are excellent tips for making a document appear more attractive and some nice "before" and "after" images are provided. Some tips are obvious for proficient users, like use tabs instead of spaces for indenting. That was the case for me, and I found this book to be overpriced for what I got out of it. ... Editorial Review

A key problem with Microsoft Windows is that its friendly user interface can get in the way of efficient system administration. There's no easy way, for example, to use the graphical administration tools to determine which of your users have passwords that will soon expire. The answers to such problems of administration come in the form of scripts written for the Windows Script Host (WSH), which are what Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Treasure Trove of Scripts
Honestly, I really do not feel this book is ideal for the novice. Users should have some administration sensibility with Active Directory.Yet, what I do find profound, is that there are both (1) very practical applicable scripts and techniques, and (2) there are some truly amazing scripts.
5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for any IT organization
No long-winded review here. This book is a great read for anyone with a small to medium sized IT organization.I bought a copy for each system admin in my group. Not many books pay for themselves in time savings with just one example as this book has done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Admins empowered
This book now sits on my desk instead of on the shelf full of other resources. The book comes with a CD to get you off and running and it steps through at a good pace for beginners like me.Being a Win2K SBS admin I don't have money for enterprise tools.I was eager to "empower" myself and this did the trick.I like the format because it's progression from introduction to scripting is thorough enough for me but not boring.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the mystery out of pre-press and color correction
Professional Photoshop 5 is out now. Where is it Amazon? If you have not worked extensively in color correction you will need to read this a couple of times to use all the techniques involed, but, you will understand itall. It helps alot if you know Photoshop well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book on CMYK corrections
Though it competes in some ways with my book (Adobe Photoshop 5 How-To, ISBN 1571691561), I think there is a healthy difference of opinion and technique in this book. Certainly a valuable tool in learning to usePhotoshop tools and image theory. One of the few I recommend.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for those workinh in RGB

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for all text workers
As the subject says, I'd consider this book required reading for everyone trying to express ideas in text. For example: I'm a professional software developer and have yet to get into a situation where I'd have to design a poster or similar thing, and yet, the principles Robin Williams explains in this book also apply in the context of software development as far as the layout of our source code is concerned. Design is everywhere, so you might as well learn the basics of it.

This is an extremely helpful book for anyone of any history in design.Back-to-the-basics design by an author that keeps it simple.Has a huge typography section, as well as some humor (a rare find in these type of books), and a lot of learning without the struggle.Buy it, read it, and add it to your library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks good but it is trouble
All in all, this is a usable book if you take the time to discover essential details that are missing. As you get into more sophisticated topics you find that about 10% of the procedures described in the book do not work. Essential steps, that could have been spelled out in a line of text, are missing and I have to experiment for close to an hour to discover what they are. The book is too verbose and could be condensed to half its size, with no loss of content. The humor is weak and adds nothing to the book; I never got a chuckle (and I like to laugh). There are no examples of creative use of Photoshop, even though this is why we want to learn the darn thing. I have used computers everyday since 1969, so I don't think that my troubles are caused by my ignorance. Unfortunately, I can't recommend a better book, since I stuck with this one and I managed to learn what I need. It is not a bad book to get you started, but you should look at other books before buying this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks good but it is trouble
All in all, this is a usable book if you take the time to discover essential details that are missing. As you get into more sophisticated topics you find that about 10% of the procedures described in the book do not work. Essential steps, thate could have been spelled out in a line of text, are missing and I have to experiment for close to an hour to discover what they are. The book is too verbose and could be condensed to half its size, with no loss of content. The humor is weak and adds nothing to the book; I never got a chuckle (and I like to laugh). 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use reference for a Novice-Intermediate After Effects Student
I found this book to be a very easy to navigate reference for my attempt at learning and using After Effects. I recommend it as an excellent cross-reference resource, especially if you are attending an After Effects classroom. I'm not sure, however, whether a nubie or novice would be able to learn easily just from reading this bookalone. Nevertheless, I give this book and the way it is structured, two-thumbs up as far as adding it to anyone's Visual Media Library.

2-0 out of 5 stars typical
I wasn't expecting anything less and the only reason I got the book was because it was cheaper on amazon then at my college's bookstore. Now what I didn't realize was the fact that Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects volumes 1 and 2 are far superior to any other book out there. So I recommend those instead. This book is just as dull and boring as most informational software books with little explanation about how to do things, little picture representation and only explaining the basics oh in say 700 pages.... if you know how to use adobe illustator or photoshop which u clearly should if you intend on using aftereffects, I suggest whether you are a beginner intermediate or advanced animator to get the creating motion graphics books instead.Ya 10$ more but the learning experience and education you'll get from those books compared to this one is uncomparable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Book for After Effects
It says the books in the Visual QuickPro series are similar to the Visual QuickStart series, but QuickPro is for more advanced users. After Effects is, by its very nature, a more advanced application for creating video than, say iMovie. That's because After Effects is a "motion graphics" program with far more features than basic video editing. I think of it as Photoshop with motion and a timeline.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sybex falls tragically short this time
Sybex normally has a reputation of being THE book to study to prepare for your exam of choice.Unfortunately this one falls well below of my expectations.I've been in the IT industry for a few years now, and even I found this book to be a difficult read. Many times, the elements presented dont follow a logical sequence, making it necessary to flip back and forth among chapters to gain the proper perspective. This book often calls reference to items you'll learn in future chapters, which can be confusing when the authors throw acronyms at you that you dont understand.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
I purchased the first edition of this book nearly two years ago (before the Deluxe Edition) to prepare for the MCDST certification. Unfortunately, I found that many of the 100+ excercises were missing procedural steps or were just flat out wrong (ex. page 360/excercise 9.4). Usually after discovering that a study guide is full of errors and vague explanations I toss the book aside along with anything else ever written by the author. But I have examined other study guide material written by Bill Ferguson and I am convinced he is a competent instructor. I guess the editors of the first edition were in a rush to meet the release date for the 1st edition and did a cursory reading of the manuscript. Hopefully, the errors of the 1st edition have been corrected in the revised Deluxe Edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, for the price
The MCDST Study Guide is a good value for the money.I would like to see more questions at the end of the chapters and for them to show more print screens of the topics instead of just telling you that you will need to know this for the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great as a Refresher
This is an excellent reference if you want to quickly brush up the topics for the exam. If you do not have hands-on experience in ASP.NET, I would suggest the Training Guide by the same author. I used the training guide initially and then used this as a quick refresher. The practice exams were excellent. They had a few questions on ADO.NET, XML and Security which were not covered in either book. I used MSDN/www.codeclinic.com (esp. for ADO.NET, Security and XML) as a supplement. Transcender was very helpful too. Overall a great CRAM book for 70-315.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you need, not an iota more
This book provides excellent preparation for 70-315.It's a very fast read because it only covers exactly what you need to pass the exam.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not so hot, badly worded questions
This book tries to be an "exam cram" but ends up being a badly abridged version of the massive Training Guide (ISBN 0789728222).There are page-consuming examples that don't add much, and yet key facts are missing. These facts do surface in the Exam Prep Questions, which at least informs the reader that they need to go research that topic, but those points should appear in the text.Questions are often badly worded; their intent is only explained by reading the answers.

1-0 out of 5 stars i have not recieved my book
i cant really give a rating on something that i have not recieved... it has been a month and i have not recived my book. i am not pleased with the service or tha book for that matter. (seeing how i paid for it and i have not recieved it) even without express shipping it should not have taken so long to recieve, on my other orders (made at the same time) i didnt have express shipping and i recieved them in a respectable time but my purchase from you (even if i can call it a purchase because i feel as if i have been robbed because i have not recieved my book)was and still is UNsatisfactory

Editorial Review

This Dummies guide is designed for beginners who want to learn the core features in Photoshop 5 for Windows in a short amount of time. You start off with an overview of the two aspects of the package--painting images and editing images--and learn what's new in this version. The author explains how to navigate the interface using zooming, guides, and grids. In the second part of the book, he discusses image size, resolution, pixels, color, file formats, and file-saving and -printing issues. The third part of the book focuses on painting, photo retouching, and undoing your work--using the eraser and History palette, for example. In the fourth part, you really start messing with pixels by learning the basic selection tools, such as lasso and rectangle selections, and the more advanced ones, such as adding to and subtracting from a selection, extending a magic wand selection, and transforming selections and paths. You also apply color and gradients to selections. Finally, in the fifth part, you work with layers, type, filters, and advanced color-correction tools, such as contrast and brightness.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars i learned a lot from this book
As a person who uses photoshop for doing graphic/fine art, I learned a lot from this book it helped master what can be a very clunky program and use it to develop my fine art skills on computer also has 5.5 ( i am using 6 now ) get this book and you too will be able to use this unqiue program.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Uneven Book
As a newcomer to Adobe PhotoShop, I had high hopes for this book. It is of some limited usefulness but ufortunately it is a very uneven book.
