5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book
this is a very good book about web usability and its not a complex kind of book, you start reading it and u dont want to stop it untill you finish it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..
As an avid read of Mr.Nielsen's blog and his website, I figured this book would comprise the "Bible of Web Design".Unfortunately, I was a bit let down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple IS usually better
Please people don't design incredibly complex sites with over the top graphics that take an hour(feels like) to download even on broadband! I encounter this everyday and can't imagine what it must be like for those on dial-up, which is still most of the internet user base. Designers like to design and justify their high paying jobs by these crazy sites that simply drive me nuts. I recently tried looking for sunglasses on the Ray Ban site and Holy [...]! What a pain in the [...]! I finally went to a small reseller site where I could actually see the glasses quickly and make a purchase. The Ray Ban site I'm sure cost a fortune and is pretty but NOT user friendly. Web site designers need to remember that these sites are for people to find products and services, not to win design contests. My ex is a graphic designer(excuse me...User Interface Experience) for a very well know company and I know how they think. The more elaborate the better, we can charge clients more! KISS ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for all text workers
As the subject says, I'd consider this book required reading for everyone trying to express ideas in text. For example: I'm a professional software developer and have yet to get into a situation where I'd have to design a poster or similar thing, and yet, the principles Robin Williams explains in this book also apply in the context of software development as far as the layout of our source code is concerned. Design is everywhere, so you might as well learn the basics of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars NonDesigners and Designers get fueled
This is an extremely helpful book for anyone of any history in design.Back-to-the-basics design by an author that keeps it simple.Has a huge typography section, as well as some humor (a rare find in these type of books), and a lot of learning without the struggle.Buy it, read it, and add it to your library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I have seen some reviews that said this can't be used to learn Photoshop from the ground up, but that is untrue, because I used this book to teach myself Photoshop with absolutely no prior knowledge whatsoever, and it does a wonderful job of explaining everything. It pretty much covers everything, and I consider it a must have. The only reason it may not be for someone is if they don't learn well from just reading; that, I admit, is a downside of this book. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand what they are talking about by just reading the instructions. If you are sitting by the computer though, it's very easy to follow step by step. If you choose to buy a book with lessons, such as classroom in a book, then I definitely recommend this book as a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Great Book!!!
I'm a member of an online gaming community and I was wanting to learn how to make my own "Sigs". After a few hours of reading I was able to use layers to make my first kool looking sig. I also was able to use Photoshop for all the graphics on my web site. If you want to learn to use Photoshop, then this book is a MUST have...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Choice for the CSS beginner and up
This book is a well written introduction into the world of css and pinpoints key concepts of css. It's by far one of the most readable texts that I have picked up out of all the technical books I've read in my few years of being alive. The book lacks a little in having some references to an example on a previous page while the reference to it is one to pages after the example. This discrepency is understood though since it is hard to keep everything together and not spill out onto other pages when planning the layout of a book. Overall this is a good book on css, and I would recommend it to anyone wishing to start into css.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but irritating typos
I would have given this book atleast 4 stars if it weren't for the misleading typos! here's a few - Chapter 6 Pg 127 refers to Figure 6.2 (which doesn't exist!) instead of Figure 6.3; Chatper 10 Pg 228 the example "H1 {color: #ff000 }" is plain wrong (needs a extra zero at the end) and will not work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resouce for new to css
ritten by the authors of CSS, at first I found it a bit heavy in dialogue and backgrounds. Not until you open the book to the index does one actually realize the wealth of information in the book. Do not expect this book to show examples of the next great page, but as a resource in trouble shooting it helped explain alot of questions I either was too lazy to look up in Dreamweaver Help or couldnt find the right type of answer elsewhere. My level is pretty much entry intermediate, but with this book, it took me a bit higher. I am getting rid of my introductory CSS books and using this one as my main go to guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all around
This is the first Mac programming book that has been released since OS X's debut that is actually worth buying. It is such an amazingly detailed tour of everything that makes the OS tick that I am honestly amazed by the thought of one person writing the entire thing. It's not going to put on a stupid looking cowboy hat and teach you Objective-C or hold your hand through building your first Cocoa project, but it will show you how to actually do something interesting once you progress beyond re-inventing the text editor and to-do list.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome comprehensive programmer's pal
This is a great book.It covers device access, iokit, debuggers, compile flags, processor info, efi/bootx and nvram settings, universal/fat binaries, heritage of Darwin and the mach role, memory management and threading, and more. It's thicker then the bible, but none of it is fluff.Well written easy to follow, and has tons of good examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable achievement
Amit Singh's Mac OS X Internals book is, for all intents and purposes, a flawless treatment of the subject matter. The breadth of coverage crosses all major kernel subsystems(processes/threads, virtual memory, etc), extentions, a history of Mac OS X, programming/developement environments, hardware architecture (including PPC details) and system firmware. I can't think of anything that Mr. Singh did not cover.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Dummies is a mess!
Dummies books have been a staple of my computing/software resource library for a long time. This book was very disappointing. If you're looking for an organized presentation of the functions and capabilities of Adobe 7, leave this on the shelf. There are few visual examples in the book and very few tutorials that lead you through a topic in any organized way at all.To get something out of this book, I found myself jumping all over the place, following topic and function chapter references tossed in all too frequently, sifting through meaningless and annoying chatty writing, trying to piece together a tool's functionality on my own.And did I mention the writing style?Distracting, distracting, distracting.I felt like I was sitting in a computer class for octogenarians with ADD. Get to the point!!Leave it on the shelf.

This book is easy to use and understand. I was comfortable using the program in a week.

2-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 7 for Dummies

5-0 out of 5 stars great way to learn compositing in general
This book is a great intoduction into the field of Digital Compositing in general. If you already know the basics of After Effects and want to learn how to see and handle live-action footage for visual effects, this is your ultimate guide. Mark Christiansen talks, of course, a lot about the After Effects application (e.g. how to optimize the interface and your personal workflow). But there are also chapters that cover more general topics like how to match a virtual 3D camera to a real film camera, the differences between lens blur and computer generated blur, how to see and recreate light and color situations in a shot, Greenscreen Keying, Rotoscoping, specifics about working with high dynamic range images like scanned film footage and so on. I've also read parts of the famous book "The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" by Ron Brinkman, which covers a lot of simmilar issues. While Brinkman goes into a lot more theoretical details but doesn't cover specific software solutions, Christiansen matches a perfect combination between general theorie and practical application. You learn how to see images - but also how to directly manipulate them in After Effects. But a lot of the knowledge that is shown in this book, could also be used when working with other compositing systems - so it's really worth reading if you already work with After Effects, even if you want to migrate to a different software one day. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you just want your printouts to look right
If you are looking for a practical, concise book explaining how to get the best possible match between what you seen on screen and what gets printed, this is NOT the book. It spends loads of time discussing background theory and how to create color profiles. Most people just don't need or want to get into this much detail or to control the process to this extent. If you just want to use color management tools and existing color profiles--which is at least 80% of us--this book is too long winded and not nearly practical enough. If you are in the elite 20%, this is a great book (see the glowing reviews for details).

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This is a great book that teaches about color theory and digital workflow. At the same time, it is not just theoretical. If you work with color images, you'll find this book very useful in a practical down-to-earth fashion. The authors eat, drink, and breath color management: they know what they are talking about.

1-0 out of 5 stars Heid should have stopped two editions ago . . .
I have been buying this book since its very first edition. Althoughthe ilife suite has added significant new features in version's 5 and 6, they are berely covered here. For example, iMovie's addition of styles, a major new development is covered in just 2 pages - a third of which is text explaining the feature! Also, this book is priced as if it had a DVD (it is the same price as the other editions with the DVD), even though the DVD is missing in action. The author's own 5 star rating is especially pathetic. This book needs a major overhaul to continue to be effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Price - Wealth of Knowledge
Not having purchased Jim Heid's previous editions of this book, I do not miss an instructional DVD that I never used. But this volume does everything that it portends to do. Along with Heid's constantly updated Web site as an instructive companion, The Macintosh iLife '06 is a joy to have and use while exploring the uses of iLife.

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife '06 by Jim Heid.....Helpful Tool
I needed to learn how to make a DVD, and Jim's book helped me get the job done. His visual guides coupled with his good sense of humor sprinkled into his writing style made the learning process seem less daunting.I aim to continue on with iMovie and iWeb, but the one application made the purchase of the book worthwhile. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive, Complete, Erudite, wonderful
I first learned photoshop from an earlier edition of this book. Throughout its many editions it's remained among the very best. At a time when Photoshop is becoming more and more daunting to learn and keep-up-with, and when many of the books therefore present a more simplistic, or at least restrictive, approach to the subject, and where hype is beginning to dominate the field, it's a pleasure to find this solid, authorative treatise continuing to shine. It's not an easy read--one of these one page per thought books--but it's got an awful lot of great information in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Requiem for the Best
This book, and its predecessors for each iteration of Photoshop, are amongst the finest of the many instructional manuals on the software. This is because the book is not only comprehensive, but provides highly effective tutorials. These tutorials start with an image on the accompanying CD and lead the reader to modify that image step by step to a final image.Because of my admiration, I was shocked to read in the introduction that this was to be the last in the series. We will have to find our way through future Photoshop versions through other means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth but very clear and logical explainations
I have been using Photoshop since 1992, so I knew it fairly well before I bought this book, but my experience was mainly in graphical design. I am now focusing on photography. I have read a lot of confusing and conflicting advice on how to use Photoshop to get the most out of your photos and have an efficient "workflow", so I wanted a book to clear things up for me. I bought this based on several published recommendations. I have worked my way about 2/3rd through it and I have found it to be excellent in all respects. It's not a book for someone who wants a quick once-over, but if you want to really become an expert with Photoshop for photography, this book is great. It is detailed but interesting and very well written, with clear and detailed walk-throughs. It would make an excellent course text and contains guidance thereto. I love it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The Chapters are really good and easily understandable. Point to be highlighted here is that the author has explained examples with SAP GUI Screen Shots. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great SD book for experienced consultants, too
I've been an SD functional consultant since 1993 and have recently started working on a very small project as the only SD consultant. Even though I've configured most aspects of SD, I haven't done it all, nor have I done it alone. Since I'm an independent consultant, this book has helped me to get a grasp of all that I need to do and what questions I need to pose to the client. This is the best SD book that I've seen - a definite keeper in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing!
Being a person who is usually armed with a highlighter and pen when reading a book where I want to remember certain tips for use later, I am overwhelmed! The book would be full of nothing but highlighter marks! Scott Kelby has always been a name I have learned to go to when searching through a list of books and his name is on one of the titles. He has solidified that to be the right choice yet again. Being a new mac user I have learned so much from this book, and am feeling confident now in my choice to switch OSs.

I have several excellent books on video, and I have to say that this book is easily the best.Charles Poynton covers all of the basics in a very understandable and readable fashion.Video is a complicated topic, and one that is not well understood. There are many facets of video that are commonly confused, such as the differences, benefits and drawbacks of interlaced versus progressive scan video, or the difference between pixels and lines of resolution.Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces is very well written, and is a must-read for any serious video professional or hobbyist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on video technology
"Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces" is definitely the best book on video and television I have ever hold in my hands.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not easy
I bought this book to understand basics and fundementals , it's quite organized and has a lot of info. in it , but you must have a good background to keep on reading and even you must have a lot of refrences to go back to while reading this book, at the first chapters there are instants that you need to go to chapter 16 to read then come back, I say this book is wonderfull if you have a good solid background ( mathematically and numericaly in Video standers and transforms... ). ... Being a long time Logic user, i still happen to not utilize the App to it's fullest. What I like about this book, is the Structure, with the chapters and the Tasks to fulfill. So it get's me closer to a streamlined workflow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple Logic Pro 7 Training Level 1 is Essential knowledge
Very good for beginners, or more experienced users who are switching to Logic from another platform. The lessons are very basic, but they provide the backbone of how Logic works, and help speed up the workflow quickly. Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So logical, this book should have been done years ago.
Can you sign your name with a bar of soap?Of course not!So, why are you trying to paint digital images with a mouse?A pen tablet and a program like Photoshop or Corel Painter are the only sensibletools for those times when you're creating an image from scratch or doing brush-oriented retouching or digital airbrushing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book
This is a great book. As both a Graphic Designer and an Illusrtator, I stradle the fence between commercial and traditional art often. This book has helped me incorporate my traditional painting style into a form I could not accomplish before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for artists!
As a long-time colleague of Cher's, I have the utmost respect for the dedication with which she crafts her books. Her "Painter WOW! Now with this "Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book," Cher has taken us into her working studio, to share her own tips and techniques. There are lessons for every level of artist and digital expertise-- all illustrated with her beautiful work. Whether or not you can arrange to take one of Cher's wonderful classes or workshops, this book will provide you with hours of lessons from one of the pioneers who helped develop the world of digital painting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A true manual for CS2
If you have Photoshop you simply must have this book. It is one of the finest books on a using a complex piece of software I have ever bought. If you buy no other manual for Photoshop this is the one you should buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars instantly dissapointed...
I produce motion graphics with Adobe After Effects, and have constantly run into the problem that on-line tutorials start with preparing or creating files in Photoshop first, then bringing those files into After Effects for manipulation. When I tell people I am a videographer, so many say "oh, you must be great with Photoshop then", so finally, I decided to take the plunge and try to learn this program.
4-0 out of 5 stars No CD???

5-0 out of 5 stars A very very useful book
I have been using this book a lot, in the recent months, and I am finding it very useful. I am not *at all* an expert latex user, but I do have decent programming skills, and I usually use a computer for hours every day, so my IT skills are decent, overall. For writing technical documents I have been using for years a fairly dated version of ScientificWorkplace, but I am now slowly switching to do more and more in latex, which gives me greater flexibility. What I usually do now is writing my documents in ScientificWorkplace, and then taking care of formatting and other unusual features editing the documents in Latex, through a program called WinEdt. In almost all cases, when I am in trouble with some commands or options, I find a clear solution in this book. For this reason, if your profile sounds a bit like mine, I would highly recommend this book. The new (fourth) edition also includes extensive references to the "hyperref" package, which is very very useful to create great pdf output that includes links to footnotes/sections/equations etc., bookmarks, and active buttons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the best for absolute beginners, but great reference
For starting out in Latex, I recommend one of the many free online tutorials, such as the "not-so-short introduction to Latex".That will get you more than started. This book is a great add-on reference to that, and the level is just right: not too wordy, but easy to follow. It has much deeper coverage of how to do graphics and drawings, how to create a bibliography, how to create postscript and pdf files, etc, in addition to the basics, of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brief, effective introduction to Latex
This is an ideal introduction to the TeX line of text formatting tools. It starts with a high level overview of the toolset. Then dives into document construction, then into tables, lists, mathematical formatting, and into user constructions and extensions for bibliographies, as well as other topics. PDF and Postscript formatting is covered. As well as AMS-TeX which is more extensions or mathematical formatting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "how to" manual even for a newbie!
I am new to Motion (2) and not a full time video editor or professional.Even so, the tutorial is excellent: well written, logical, easy to follow. If you produce the occasional movie (just for fun) and want to step up to the more sophisticated capabilities of Motion 2, you can't go wrong with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Training Series (so far)
This is the third of the Pro Training Series books I've used (DVDSP and FCP are the others) and while the others are excellent, this is the best of the bunch. The first chapter alone taught me tricks and shortcuts I hadn't learned through the manual or the DVD training series I used. I've been using Motion practically since day one of its release and it's strength (and weakness) is that it can do just about anything...you just have to figure out what you want done and how to do it. This book has great lessons that expand one's knowledge and outlook on the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
As a fellow PeachPit author, I know what it takes to produce a book like this. First off, congrats to Damian for getting this book to market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for all skill levels
First let me start off by saying that I am far from a Photoshop beginner so I am cautious when choosing a book, but this one didn't disappoint. I was introduced to many tricks and tips or "Finishing Touches"... such as (patterns, custom brushes, burned edges, selective blurring and delivery) among others that have recently added that extra "pop" to my photos. I noticed in the other reviews that people are disappointed with the amount of "border effects" but what they are forgetting is Photoshop is a program that produces the best results with experimentation. Dave isn't trying to create clones (not the stamp), but is giving us insight in how the pros create such stunning imagery.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book stays near my desk!
Another great reference book from Dave Cross. This one will be well-thumbed before it's retired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great if you are Good
Ok, I'm not really out to toot my own horn here, but I was already very good at photoshop before I got this book.
