5-0 out of 5 stars YOU WANT TO BE IN PICTURES...!!
Are you a Macintosh filmmaker and DVD designer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is designed to give you a grounding in professional filming and editing techniques.
4-0 out of 5 stars OK, I see how that's done!
After searching Apple's support site for help with using these two programs, I turned to David Pogue's excellent manual.I have several of David's manuals and this was certainly up to his standards. Easy to read and follow.Although there is a tremendous amount of meat in the programs, you probably wouldn't discover all the potential without spending a little time with another excellent Missing Manual.I would recommend this to anyone interested in building a professional iMovie or creating a smooth DVD collection of favorite images or clips. And, with almost no effort at all, you can build an out of the ordinary slide show made complete with music, fades and a nice variety of special effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be your own movie director yourself - painless!
It would be natural to think why does you need to buy this 22 dollars book, if iMovie and iDVD is so easy as Apple claims. But unfortunately, it is not easy as they say, (as all software vendors which want to earn more money by save the cost to print clear written manual) It need some extra help, with more English, I mean. In this point of view, this book is more than worth, in particular, you can learn more tips and advice to successfully make your own movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give you clear look of little giant
This book gives you the bird-eye view of the world's renowned photo management software, it has some useful information for amateur photographer who is intended to use iPhoto software, written in plain english. It is little interesting that one-thirds of the entire book contents are cover how to choose the right digital camera and how to take a good shot, of course, you don't have to worry since its another two-thirds of pages are fulled about some kind of "soft" thing, which is about acquire, manage, tag, retouch and share or archive your pictures.

Editorial Review

PHP and MySQL go hand in hand; the former has been carefully adapted, through the efforts of the open-source community, to the latter. For situations that require dynamic content but don't merit the complexity and development time of Java or .NET enterprise applications, the PHP language and the MySQL database server fit the bill perfectly. That's the point Hugh Williams and David Lane make in Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly poor index
I'm new to PHP and MySQL, but a programmer for over 3 decades. I'm customizing some PHP code, using code examples for ideas. When I (a) see something I want to understand better or (b) want to find the PHP analog for basic functions, I naturally turn to the index to try to find the information I need. However, I found the index very disappointing because of what it doesn't have. For example, simple and basic keywords are not in the index: "comment", "logical operator", "and", "or", etc. I'm going to have order a different book as a PHP reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best starting point to php and mysql
I bought this book with the hope I could learn just enought to get me started with web application development. I only hadlittle programming experience at that time, I I didn't even have any experience with databases. Well. This book was the perfect introduction to web applications. From security to authentication, from php basics to multi-table join sql queries, this book got me into this world, and I appreciate it so much because I am working now in web development, thanks to what I learned from here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction Book & Reference
This book is an excellent introduction to PHP, MySQL, and the interaction of the two. It has a few chapters introducing PHP, then a few introducing MySQL, and then walks through the steps necessaryto build a functioning dynamic website. They also include an elaborate and detailed case study of a Winestore application the author's developed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bloody awesome
I took my test today and came close to maxing out, 972....study hard the reviews at the end of the book. When taking the test, read the questions AND answers carefully, kind of like the old school days, an answer may "look" right but it could be one word off. Keep the books, don't resell them, I've already gone back into 70-271 and reviewed a few things. handy to have on hand when you deal with it every day.Very thorough in my opinion. Just a humble IT geek working on his certs.....

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW Great deal and Super Helpful
I just took this certification and found out that some of test questions were the same as the back of this book.If you go through the test bank in the back of the book and go through the lessons your sure to pass. The book also comes with 180 day trials of xp pro sp2 and office 2003 professional. Not to meantion you get a voucher for 15% off the exam.I will warn you that some of the exam questions are very easy and others are super tricky.

3-0 out of 5 stars Act Quickly
This book came with a free trial of Office 2003. (The book for the 70-271 exam has the XP Pro trial as stated in the editorial review) When I tried to install the free trial it had already expired. Apparently, the free trial begins when the book is purchased, and not when the software is installed. Therefore, if you wait to install it you will not get the full 180 days, and the 180 days includes the time it takes to ship the book to you. I really needed the free trial. I was saving it until I needed it, and I ended up buying Office Professional 2003 instead. Oh well, the book gets a 3 anyways because it needs supplemental material to prepare for the exam. (but don't they all?) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every $.01
I have purchased too many Photoshop books! If I had purchased this first, it would have been my only one. Very clear and concise explainations!Nice work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend
This is a truly excellent CS2 book - Willmore explains the why - behind the how to many of the critical processes necessary for understanding CS2.I highly recommend this book, it is the best overall CS2 book on the market period.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Photoshop Book Available
A book is only as good as it's author and Mr. Willmore is an incredibly gifted writer in that he is able to explain WHY different techniques are used in Photoshop rather than simply listing a clinical step-by-step HOW-TO, as most of the Photoshop cookbooks out there do. This ultimately leads the reader to a much better understanding of the program and the tools that it offers the digital artist. The so-called telephone-book-thick "bibles" that are offered up for every software suite under the sun are nothing more than 'do this, do that, arrive at this' lists of instructions; they do very little in the way actually explaining WHY you would want to use a certain filter here, or adjustment layer there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for the novice and self-trained
I recently finished reading - and taking copious notes - from The Elements of Graphic Design. As an individual taking himself through the process of learning graphic design without having to go to school, this book is invaluable. White makes the concepts crystal clear and simple prose imbued with his own take on doing design correctly plus doing it well. I've always had a good eye for composition but White's work has helped me see the underlying methods for making my designs better. I'm now building a presentation from his work to share with our marketing team to build a consistent look for our work. His book is a superb work for anyone needing to get a quick grip on design fundamentals, too. Just put them to use! There's no magic here, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do design. White will show you the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow
I'm not a neophyte with CSS, but when I needed to turn an all-table-layout site into an all-CSS-layout site, I needed help. I turned to McFarland's book, which after a quick flip-through at the store seemed to hit exactly what I needed. Literally two pages of reading covered me, and I was off and running. But when I started reading the rest I was amazed at how much I didn't know about CSS. I really appreciate the real-world focus on browsers like IE5-6, and the inclusion of specific fixes for those CSS-unfriendly browsers. The fact that this book is SO recent - mid-2006 - means it's as up-to-date as a printed publication possible could be. While I'm sure the lengthy tutorials would be useful for someone progressively learning CSS, I like the book for it's logical organization, allowing me to flip to the bit I need, quickly see examples of what's going on (the ample screen shots are appropriate for a visual medium like CSS), and get back to work. I don't buy many computer books (for all that I've written several), but this one earns a permanent place not on my bookshelf, but right on my desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent missing manual
This is another fine addition to the Missing Manual series. CSS is easier than it sounds and now I think I understand it. MacFarland makes it all clear. This whole series is excellent - books for those of us who still like our manuals on paper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Straight-forward, Professional Approach to CSS
Overall, the book is a great read and recommended for anyone serious about designing professional websites. The chapters are broken up appropriately giving readers a gradual progression into the world of Cascading Style Sheets without too much detail at once.A major issue encountered in the book were the random passages scattered throughout where the author made recommendations that subsequent sections was boring and could be skipped.Personally I feel this puts the reader into a disgruntled state of mind.I liked how David put in the tutorials at the end of each chapter (except chapter 1) and these helped a lot clarify the material and how to put that material to use.I was disappointed though that the book did not present exercises for the reader to try out on their own at the end of each chapter. There were some exercises given by David but they were not consistent throughout the book (most chapters didn't have them). Finally I really enjoyed the overall pace of the book and found Appendix A with the entire CSS property list to be most helpful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
It is excellent as far as it goes. I wish it was somewhat easier to use by being more complete.

4-0 out of 5 stars About Mac
I like Robins ways of teaching, and her book is great. For me it is a bit confusing as I have to keek refering back to other sections. Otherwise great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor effort
Robin Williams usually does a superb job - she's fun to read, has a perspective which is easy for the reader to understand and puts information clearly while not talking down to readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Huges Help with Acorbat 7.0
I have been using Acrobat for projects since version 3.0.I've also bought a number of books on all these versions. This particular book is one of the best because it gives a specific problem or situation and then gives you specific instructions. No generalizations, just instructions.I found this approach very helpful with a last minute project and can see where it would have so many useful applications.Even for an experienced user of Acrobat, I found lots of nifty shortcuts that will make my Acrobat life better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good General Reference
As the title, and most of the reviews (save Mr. Strauchs') suggest, this is the manual that doesn't exist in print. It's a nice alternative to the Help menu as it's written in a personable style that offers more direct and real-world applications for the basics of FileMaker.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, complete, yet easy to understand; well-done tutorials
Concur with all the other reviewers that this is THE best, most complete, yet easy-to-follow guide to FileMaker Pro [FMP]. The authors really have gone out of their way in using plain words to describe arcane concepts, and the illustrations are well executed. Although there are the usual typos and occasional ambiguous/misleading statements, there is a continuously updated website with 'Errata' and sample completed tutorial exercises. [If these were included on a CD with the book, this book would warrant a super-nova rating!]
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer that has been working with FileMaker for a while? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoff Coffey and Susan Prosser, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that explores each feature in depth, offers shortcuts and workarounds, and explains the ramifications of options that a FileMaker Pro manual doesn't even mention.

5-0 out of 5 stars good guide
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I've been using Windows since the early 1990s and recently bought my first Mac. At first I thought this wasn't the book I wanted.I wanted to learn the OS on its own, not in "translation." For example, you'll find things like this in this book: "Finder = Windows Explorer," "Dock = Taskbar," etc. I thought it would hinder learning in a way total-immersion wouldn't; I'd hoped to learn to use the Mac directly. So after my husband picked up "Switching to the Mac" the first day I had the computer--in order to figure out how to network the Mac to our PCs and printers, and to transfer files, etc. (all of which is in this book)--I ordered four other books. I wanted to read them like other reviewers did: straight through, fun learning. But, it's not as easy as I'd hoped to learn a whole new operating system and, for me, the manuals don't prove to be fun reading -- as cheeky as their humor can be. So, I find myself reaching for "Switching to the Mac" as a necessary reference book. It presupposes that the reader is proficient at using a computer, but not a Mac (unlike other books, which either assume no computer knowledge or are written in "Mac language" for those familiar with previous Mac operating systems.)
5-0 out of 5 stars "Switching to the Mac" - Entertaining and Informative

2-0 out of 5 stars For Experienced Users Only
As a new user of this or ANY such program, I find that this book does not cover the basics. It was used in courses that I took to learn desktop publishing because of job requirements. It's pretty much monkey see, monkey do if you have no experience with this program. You don't learn the reasons why you're following the steps or how to decide which procedures apply when you're working on your own vice working with the lessons provided.I'm looking for a book that gives you a foundation for thinking things through, and this is definitely not it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting practice for Adobe Creative Suite 2
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Class Room in a Book is part of the official training series for Adobe products. This book provides various training projects that cover different fields of the graphic design.
3-0 out of 5 stars I Am A Bit Disappointed
Since I have purchased other Adobe Classrooms in a Book, I mistakenly believed that this book would contain a complete "Classroom in a Book" section for each application in Adobe CS2.I was wrong. In fact, the entire book is approximately the same size as the Classroom in a Book that was published for Pagemaker 7 alone.Let me restate that:CS2 contains several MAJOR applications, yet the Classroom in a Book for the entire suite is as thin as one published earlier for a single Adobe application!

4-0 out of 5 stars Look over a Master's shoulder
Awesome learn by example book IF you already have a little background in CSS, and even then if your knowledge is elementary you might be lost on some of the finer points. If it had a little more theory and explanations it would be a killer book, but I guess Eric Meyer didn't have patience enough for that. He is anyway a Master in CSS styling, no doubts about that, and the right author too look at for learning and inspiration. The book is structured around several projects that you see in the various developing stages from beginning to end in reasonably small steps. The explanations of what's going on are like what you would expect from a guru/designer/artist that is, far from complete andbasic. Again is like you had the chance to peek over Eric's shoulder while he works, but he won't be bothered to lose too much of his time after you. But don't get me wrong, this book is a must have for anyone interested in CSS, even if I would not buy it now (it starts being a bit dated) but would wait for his next book that should come out this autumn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second to none!
I wanted a quick crash course in CSS; instead this book gave me a comprehensive start that led me on a path to a solid foundation in designing with Cascading Style Sheets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference about CSS
The first seen this book seems one more technical guide about CSS, but to the first contact realizes that it is a great reference based on needs to everyday of the web designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars REALLY HELPFUL!
I was used to an InDesign software from far ago, the dinosaur era. When got the newest version, was at a complete lost. This book explains in easy words EVERYTHING! Adobe's software is great, but their manuals can be used and understood by those with an IQ of 300 up. Am grateful for this book and fully recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars quite boring
Technically, this will teach you how to use indesign. But it's so boring and repetitive. It's like memorizing a list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be
I've used Visual Quickstart books for years, and until this one they've been extremely accurate. This one contains what seem to be screen caps of menus and options from some previous version of InDesign, so you have to look around for the options someplace else if they've moved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really truly teaches you to use Illustrator
I loved this book from the moment I saw it.It is visually very pleasing to look at, and when you're reading a book that's over 500 pages, how it looks really matters. The page layout is very clean, and the readability of this book is very high. One of the sections I appreciated was a breakdown by genre of use, such as "graphic designer," "package design," or "fashion and apparel design," that directs you to the chapters that would be most helpful to you. This book is good because he teaches you to actually use Illustrator in a functional manner rather than detailing every item of every possible submenu.Additionaly, you learn the conceptual why and then the how-to.There are "Featured Match-Ups" that clarify the differences and similarities between two similar tools, and for more complex features, such as 3D Revolve, there are excersizes to better demonstrate the tools.Overall, this is a really good tool to get you started in Illustrator, and has enough explanations that the intermediate user can benefit from reading it too. And finally, there is an appendix on converting from FreeHand to Illustrator, which, though not one of my needs, is faily good sized for those that are looking for help in that area. This book is a very complete overview of the whole Illustrator CS2 package and will have you actually accomplishing what you want to in the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST HAVE reference on Illustrator CS2
When those of us who are experts in Illustrator run into a problem, Mordy Golding is often the person we go to for help. Now you too can turn to Mordy for help by keeping the Real Wolrd Adobe Illustrator CS2 book next to your computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best graphics computer manual format I've encountered yet!
I just took Mordy's class at ADIM9 and got his book. I have to say it's the best book for my needs I've seen, and I am a very experienced consumer of graphics tech manuals. I'm only about 1/3 through it, but my skipping ahead makes me believe the rest of the book has the same format: if you need a step-by-step project based book, this may not be the book for you. But, if, however, you want a very complete, advanced overview that builds knowledge upon knowlege from-the-ground-up of how this works for the professional, this is the book for you. I've been using Illustrator professionally for about four years and I was getting by but not always knowing the quickest way to do things. This book will save me SO MUCH TIME! Thank you Mordy and PeachPit Press! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Reference for InDesign CS2
Real World InDesign CS2 is what the users manual should be.For example, It covers Tables which only appear in the online help for InDesign CS2. The users manual only makes reference to See the Help files.Like the previous Real World InDesign texts it is well written, easy to understand, and covers all of the functions of the software. From creating an initial layout to color management to Printing the final project Real World InDesign CS2 is the text to have. I would recommend Real World InDesign CS2 to both Novices and long-time users of InDesign. It is the one book you will refer to time and again for problem solving.
