3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book was a disappointment. I had expected a reference of the caliber of David Pogue's Mac OS X Tiger manual.Among problem areas: a hard-to-navigate and incomplete index, fuzzy photo insets, and incorrect cross-references. The manual has the feel of something put together in a hurry without proper proof-reading, and borrowing heavily from canned sources. I learned some things but had to work harder to glean the information than I should have. I would not recommend this manual, unless it's the only game in town. I don't think it is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware the mistakes
I am a big fan of the Missing Manual series. Previous books have given me lots of insights into my installed software and have made my computing time much more efficient. I therefore approached this book with much enthusiasm. Office is such a gargantuan program, with tons of bells and whistles, that Microsoft itself estimates that most userstake advantage of less than a third of its capabilities.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book crippled by inadequate index
I was impressed by the other 'Missing Manual' book which I have read, their guide to OSX, and had high hopes for this one.The book itself is quite decent, though not as well written as the OSX guide. However, it is crippled by a totally inadequate index.First, the way in which the index is organized makes little sense -- some Word topics are listed alphabetically on their own, while others are grouped together as sub-entries under 'Word', forcing you to look in several different places.Far worse, the index is simply incomplete, making it difficult if not impossible to look upthe answers to specific questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice detailed explanation
For the advanced Latex user, this book will enhance your documents to professional looking documents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dissertation Salvation
I am not a LaTeX newbie. I have used various LaTeX implementations for several years over the course of my graduate student career. Nevertheless, most of my LaTeX experience was with simpler more forgiving projects. Those projects\textemdash and my frustrations with Word instability during the development of several grant proposals\textemdash (joke) were what encouraged me to tackle my dissertation using LaTeX.
2-0 out of 5 stars not practical, incomplete
I give it 2 stars, because it means "I don't like it" according to Amazon's rating system. I tried to "quickly" figure out how to change margins in a document. It turned out to be much more easier to do it with Google! So, OK, this is not a recipes book. It runs pages and pages, though. if you can stand it, you can find it.

4-0 out of 5 stars 10 Tutorials
10 step-by-step hands-on tutorials that cover most of the things a beginner needs to know. Kelby writes with wit and precision and a picture appears with every step. I highly recommend this book for beginners, but I would also suggest you buy a more complete reference book for Tiger (Pogue or Williams).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the money, but still pretty good
I've been in a fight w/ Apple and Peachpit over this 'new' version of DVDSP4.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not updated for DVD Studio Pro 4
While this book is probably the best DVD Studio Pro guide currently available, be aware that it doesn't contain any information about the new features in DVD Studio Pro 4 (e.g partitioning GPRMs and allocating menus to VTS folders). In fact, some of the statements made in this book, while true for DVD Studio Pro 3, are factually incorrect for DVD Studio Pro 4 (e.g. 1 GB limit for menus). Since I already have Martin Sitter's excellent Visual QuickPro Guide for DVD Studio Pro 3, this book was a waste of money for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars pricey but worth it
I know this seems abit pricey but its worth it. I dont have the attention span needed to read most books cover-to-cover. Even though this book is huge I have browsed it all and read most of it. Multiple times! Each time I find some new tidbit to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one unix book that I'd like to have if stranded all alone on an island with a linux system!!
I'm an analog IC designer moonlighting as a linux hacker (I'm actually addicted). I try to build software, write shell scripts and customize my desktop to death. I picked up this book a year or two back and I think I've probably used it almost every single day to look up something or the other. I probably own about 20 linux related books (more than my engineering books) but this is the one that I would run out with when the firealarm sounds. Here is my short summary of my feelings about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Book for MySQL 4.x users
This book is very practical and gives a clean insight for Power Users of MySQL. It also illustrates some concepts in brief and gets user going fast. Some of the topics like backups, load balancing are covered very well. In short following is what I can say in points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book overall, but may grow obsolete to MySQL5.
I mainly bought this book so that I could get some insight into 'advanced' Storage and Replication techniques w/ MySQL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Design Workshop
I learned about this book at a recent seminar. Bought it here through Amazon. Was a little worried when I read the first chapter that it would be over my head because I am a total novice, but I soon found myself engrossed in the book. It really is very helpful and the repeatition of ideas and "rules" helps drive home the important stuff. Well laid out so you can skip the chapters that don't interest you. Although I would consider reading them. I found that certain ideas hit home better in some chapters than others and I think it has helped my overall design ability. Good Book especially for those of us who love how-to books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Design Workshop
This is a great reference for print design but the web site section is almost laughably outdated.Gone are the days of splash entry pages and HTML tables for non-conmplex layouts (now easily rendered by CSS). And who the heck is running 640x480 resolution on a 14 inch monitor these days??

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward Approach to Learning a Simple Software.
I just created a website in Dreamweaver for a client with the end expectation that they would be able to use Contribute to edit their site without a lot of headache. Contribute proved to be absolutely simple to setup and use for this task after I read through this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I have in the past eagerly bought books from the Visual Quickstart Guide series, but this one is a terrible disappointment. It has all the weaknesses of the series (such as tiny font in the screen snapshots), and none of the strength.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recomended
If you are going to use Contribute for anything more than the very basics, I highly recommend this book.As of this writing it is the only book I know of about Contribute 3 that is really written for version 3 and not a version 2 book with new graphics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Up to date
This is a great text book for graphic designers to have in their library. It provides a lot of visuals and information designers should be familiarized with.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I have been a graphic designer for over 20 years. I teach typography at the university level. I learned typography the old-fashioned way: by specifying, setting, and manipulating it by hand. From that background I can confidently state that THE best way to truly understand how type works is through understanding the forms of letters, words, and groups of words.3-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a letdown
This is one of the rare books that my art college actually required me to purchase for a Typography class. The design of this book is poor and very dated. Just take a look at the cover. The first chapter offers a timeline which is interesting in concept--it features a brief history of lettering and type, and adds images of other significant events happening at the same time. But the timeline design forces you to jump back and forth from images to text and the grid layout forces the image placement to be so inconsistent that you give up trying to find the corresponding text. The rest of the book provides interesting and useful information for the type neophyte, but again, its WAY too dated to be a required textbook. I'm sorry I bought this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book and I'm Not Crying Wolf
I purchased this title as a supplemental text for a Master's course I was taking in Advanced Graphics and Multimedia. It was the most practical resource I had available to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must in every sense
If you're new to flash or you know the basics, this is the right book for you. Covers any possibility and guides you step by step even before you can touch a computer! The first chapters explains how Flash works, just as any other flash book, but also explains all the differences using flash for animation instead of web design, and contains an useful description about how you can optimize and reduce your files size for optimum performance, and more important, the differences between TV and video output and web animation file sizes, frame rates and screen proportions. This part often is not included in most flash books and it's essential for ambitious proyects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Aperture LOWER VERSIONS
BEWARE.one star just to get your attention!
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!
I was given the opportunity to review this book by an acquaintance, and I am very glad for the opportunity. It has totally changed the way I approach my digital workflow. My previous workflow started with a folder for each year, containing a folder for each month.Inside the monthly folders were still other folders for each shoot.I would download my digital RAW files in the root of each shoot folder. Then I would create 3 separate subfolders inside each shoot folder, (1) alt (for altered ), (2) fin (for final), and (3) out (for output).I would place the various iterations of each file in these directories for retrieval and sorting.I would open each RAW file in Nikon Capture and evaluate the shot. Then I would make any necessary alteration and save the required output files, whether for web, print, or archive.Sometimes the images would be opened in Photoshop for further work, and saved back to the same directory structure. This worked fairly well, but it was a very slow process.Finding images weeks, months, and years later was very difficult without going into each directory and looking through the saved files. Now I keep all of my files in the Aperture program, and it allows me to save all of the iterations side-by-side.Even those alterations made in Photoshop are saved as "versions" of my original digital file.It has cut my workflow time down significantly, but even more important, it has allowed me to keep track of all of the versions of my files together, making the finding and printing of previous files manageable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right
I had recently purchased a digital SLR (after decades of film photography) and I had many other scanned images 'from way back when.'And with a fairly big digital project looming, I needed to be 'in the know' with Aperture -- and fast. The book was written well and gave the hands-on learner as well as the visual student something to get a hold of.This is my first Amazon review of a product (though I've purchased a ton of stuff over the years), but I really wanted to give my 'Thumbs Up' to this book for getting me set and ready to go.I did use the book as reference often, as I recalled, "I remember doing this in a lesson... but how.." and Orlando Luna & Ben Long got me prepared.Without much effort I got a photo-journalistic view of a recent wedding, edited & organized and then set up on one of my websites with Aperture. And I can safely say that it wouldn't have happened without this book.THANKS for your effors Orlando & Ben and Peachpress!I would recommend this book first, if you're new to Aperture, before going on to others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the book
I was one of Philip Meggs students at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Our class was the first to use the first edition of this book as a classroom textbook for his History of Graphic Design class. He was a wonderful storyteller, with a true passion for graphic design. And more than that was the obvious joy he had in sharing that knowledge and whimsical annecdotes in his own style of humor. Philip Meggs was an exceptional man that will truly be missed.

I have several Visio books - most are useless for developers who write VBA/VB/VC++ code for Visio automation. For those who develop for Visio, this is a must-have book. It's simply the Visio developer's bible compared to the rest.It includes sample code, appendices of events, properties and more.I wish I had known about this book before I began visio programming because it's easy to read from beginning to end and progress your skills incrementally - now I use it as a reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
I bought this book based on the feedback on this page. And although I would not call the book unusable, it has a lot of scope for improvement. The book layout is terrible and there is almost zero cross refrencing in the book itself. Imagine the author does not ask the reader to look in another part of the book for more information. So my verdict is that although the book has good content, it's laid out in a haphazard way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book
I love this book. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it hopelessly fails trying to get into PowerPoint programming territory. The author should have stayed away from this area and concentrated more on beginner issues. After all, this certainly is a beginner's book. In fact, it's as good as the missing PowerPoint manual. If you want to go beyond the manual, check out the well explained Cutting Edge PowerPoint by Geetesh Bajaj. It makes a great complement to this book. And if you want to do more programming, check out Powerful PowerPoint for Educators by David Marcovitz. And for troubleshooting PowerPoint, look at Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances by Echo Swinford.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start
I am an audiovisual professional, and I have been tapped by my company to be the 'streaming media guy', and this book has been a great place to start. My use for this book is as an introduction to streaming media so that I can understand how some of the products that we sell can integrate onto a prospective clients network.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile information
While this book is huge (over 800 pages) it is an easy read and you may find that much of the information can be skipped over. As I have been in the business of producing videos for 20+ years I really didn't need all the information on how to shoot, light, etc. - but this would certainly be useful for a beginner.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Streaming Media Production Book You Need
It's rare that any technical book covers a subject really well from beginning to end, in an easy to read manner with real-world examples, but this is exactly what the Streaming Media Bible does.Read more

Editorial Review

While there is a plethora of books available that provide tips on Web design, most authors leave a significant gap between the theory and practice--a gap that is left up to the reader to fill. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nielson disappoints again
Admittedly, I've been biased against Nielson's works since the publication of `Designing Web Usability' in 1999; finding his tendency to oversimplify and `deconstruct' rather ineffectual. And as usual, `Homepage Usability' disappoints as an overly sensational and inaccurate evaluation of homepage usability. There are good parts, in particular, the statistics you may want to reference for your own usability initiatives. But the `50 webpages deconstructed' portion is not much more than Nielson spewing hot air. If you learn (or are entertained) best through critique by an impossible standard and ideal, by all means, this book is for you. If you are looking for a USABLE and real life guide to homepage design, look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jakob Nielsen is a huge dork!
I was forced to use this book for college in a "Website Admin" class.I think the first 53 pages make a good reference for web design but the rest of it is all about how fortune 500 companies have bad websites.Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, etc... come on now, these companies ARE the internet and this guy is "deconstructing" them and critisizing what they do wrong.Anyway, design is completely relative so use this as a guide only.By the way... pages 54 through 320 can be removed as far as i'm concerned.
4-0 out of 5 stars detailed critiques of major websites
This book excels in giving detailed critiques of the home pages of 50 prominent websites. These include Microsoft, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, General Electric and Boeing. The websites span the gamut from appealing to a mass audience, like Amazon and MTV, to more specialised corporate sites like GE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I found this to be a really good book.It covers everything you need to know about typography. From the basics and generalized topics, to the nitty gritty. So if you are looking to have a better undertanding of typography, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers past history, letter architecture and future computer typesetting
I am only half way through this book (so much in it I have to take it a few pages at a time). The history of type is covered (and should be read to learn vocabulary...but has a great glossary if you just want to learn terms in other sections as you go along...21 pages of glossary.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Although I'm not an expert and therefore cannot comment on whether this really is a complete manual, I can say that the book is very good. It's full of helpful examples (nicely placed in the margins) that help the reader develop good typographical intuitions. It is extremely accessible, even for a non-specialist, and from all that I can tell, it is quite comprehensive. ... Read more
