1-0 out of 5 stars pretty poor book
very poorly laid out and confusing presaentation of both forms and reports.some fairly good detailed examples (if you can find them) but the overall presentation is chaotic.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great for forms, not so much for reports
This is a solid reference book for those doing primarily Forms development, but it lacks quite a little in the Reports department. If you're buying it for Reports development, as I did, you'll be disappointed.I have yet to find a very good Reports reference. That said, this is probably the best one out there. The book contains something like 70% - 30% Forms info to Reports info (and that may be a little generous). It does have a few good examples and is an easy read.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very bad book
This book doesn't cost its money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book worked for me
I used this book, and one other, to take and pass the Oracle Certified Professional exam (OCP).The other book I used was Oracle Press' PL/SQL Program Units Exam Guide, which focuses just on the second exam. This book covers all of the exams, but the second exam is especially difficult, and a friend recommended that one for that exam specifically.2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic
Good book for a beginner (this is an excellent intro to SQL and PL/SQL), but not enough depth for the exams. It covers all the necessary areas, but barely skims the surface on numerous important topics.I recommend the Sybex book (even though it's a little dry). For each test, I'd start with this book and then move on to another text; that should be all you need to pass the exams.Be sure to PRACTICE; that's by far the most important element of success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
This is THE book to get for Oracle Discoverer. What more can I say, it's well written, clear with good examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, comprehensive coverage
Oracle Discoverer is a complex tool and much more than a single understanding of the functionality is required to use it effectively for business intelligence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource!
I am a neophyte to Discoverer, having just accepted a position where the primary assignment is to learn discoverer and develop a library.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
The author probably has great insight into the subject matter;unfortunately, he does not know how to convey his knoeledge to the reader. The practice test questions are ambiguous and full of errors. There was probably minimal editing of questions and answers; as a result, a reader has to correct the errors and then try to fully comprehend the explanations to the practice questions. It is an inefficient way to study and learn. Head First, despite its errata (it has corrections at its website), is a superior product. This textbook is not worth the headaches.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of errors
I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably good
I got this book partially because I prefer more of a textbook format than the Head First books. This book's format was more straightforward, so I got it along with the Head First Servlets and JSP.However, I have found a lot of errors, inconsistencies and confusing explanations in this book. Some of the errors are minor, but others really cause fundamental confusion.I'm searching for an errata for the book now.(There may not be one -- I'm not finding it yet.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a little outdated
This video course applies to Oracle Forms Developer 6.0 (and makes references to Oracle 8i).If you are using Developer 10g you'll still be able to follow along, but the instructions for a few steps will be incorrect. That said, I was still able to determine what to do--it wasn't a show-stopper.Make sure you go to their companion web site to download the latest excercises rather than the ones on the CD.(See PTR's website for their interactive companion websites.) You will need to have an Oracle database available to you so that the schemas can be installed. You run a PLSQL script to install them.I used Oracle Personal Edition 10g, but the Express edition should work too. SQL, PLSQL, and knowledge of database concepts is a prerequisite for the course. The only paperback book you receive is the one that has the exercises in it.A pdf version of the exercise book can be accessed in the course using the eBook tab.You will need an Internet browser and Apple Quicktime to view the course videos. The CD comes with old versions of Netscape Navigator and Quicktime.I didn't install them, but went out on the web and downloaded the newest version of Quicktime and used my current version of Internet Explorer. Then, I just copied the direcory with the course material to my hard drive and doubleclicked on the Index.html file. There are 13 lectures videos, each with a demonstration video. After viewing the video you use Developer to work the exercises. There are usually several exercises for each lecture.Topics covered are: Oracle Forms Concepts, Mandatory Forms Objects, The Data Block and Layout Wizards, Oracle Forms Files, The Object Navigator, The Property Palette, The Layout Editor, Master-Detail Forms, Text Items and Display Items, Buttons, List Items, Radio Groups, and Check Boxes, Trigger Basics, Creating Triggers of Various Types, Forms Built-Ins, Lists of Values (LOVs), Alerts, Canvas and Window Concepts, Content Canvases and Windows, Stacked Canvases, Toolbar, Canvases, Subclassing, Visual Attributes and Property Classes, Object Groups and Object Libraries, Template Forms, Calling One Form from Another, Running Oracle Reports from Forms, Passing Parameters to Reports, Menu Modules, and Menu Security.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is a great book. I was able to apply what I learned very quickly to develop a Forms application. The labs and exercise answers are very detailed and easy to understand. It is the best Forms book by far for those who want hands-on, practical experience. I feel confident that I can tackle more complex assignments because I have a firm grounding based on this book and its excellent companion video CD. My advice is, don't spend $1000 or more for a class - buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Oracle Forms training solution.
I have read several books on Oracle Forms development and this is by far the clearest and easiest to learn from. Oracle Forms is not the best environment to develop in, but this course and the included workbook take you through step by step and provide feedback in the form of detailed answeres. Further, the problems in this book and solutions actually WORK unlike other books on the subject. It is well worth the... Thank you for this setup, it has cleared up a lot of questions and provided the steps needed for developing working forms! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for any PL/SQL programmer
If there is any book which will "fine-tune" one's knowledge of PL/SQL, this is it. It is written in Feuerstein's inimitable style which will keep you engaged with the book much longer than any other peer book of it's kind. There is so much to learn from this book really - and it applies to beginners as experts alike. This book explores the tiniest nuts and bolts of PL/SQL in an exercise-like format which gives the reader a chance to ponder on the problem before he/she looks up the answers. And I must add, you are in store for a lot of surprises when you look up the answers in the second half of the book ! (escpecially in the experts' section)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book with Helpful Learning Exercises
I thought this book was great. If you like getting into specific, real-world programming tasks and figuring out the best solutions then this book is for you.He provides helpful explainations along with his solutions. There are a lot of top-notch, practical techniques that you learn as you get into the nitty-gritty of working on small pieces of pl/sql code. There are also questions that test your conceptual understanding of different facets of pl/sql programming --- questions that you could face on a job interview.Even though I've been a pl/sql developer for a few years, I found this book very useful. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Missed the point in many areas
This book looks like a very useful textbook, but upon ovening the cover it does not help with the advanced concepts of Designer. Many sections, especially chapter 3, were fraught with errors, and it appears that the text was not edited for content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I have significant experience in all aspects of system design using other tools (i.e. Visio) and am working toward an Oracle Master certificate as a Design Engineer, so I found myself bypassing many of the early chapters geared toward design methodology; however, for those with less experiencethey can be very useful.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-in-one book, but could use more on generation.
As usual, the authors have produced a very useful and easily readable work.An absolute must to those interested in using this tool, especially if upgrading from earlier version.I would have recommended a little lesson methodology (well-covered in their book on Version 1.x of Designer/2000)and a lot more on generation.Success with this tool normally isdetermined by the quality of the generated output of Designer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of its kind.
This book by Annette Harper is one of its kind in the market. It explains the various ODBC drivers by a comparitive study which gives us a very good idea as to which driver we should use.5-0 out of 5 stars Crystal Reports 9 on Oracle
Crystal Reports 9 on Oracle is an excellent book written by Annette Harper. Every report writer will benefit from the in depth coverage of how to write effective reports by best utilize Oracle 9i database features from new Oracle 9i analytical SQL functions, PL/SQL, materialized views, external tables, flashback queries, etc.to Oracle optimization techniques. The book's expert insight into Crystal Reports 9 optimization tips, Data Dictionary report and Crystal Reports 9 repository will empower Crystal Reports writer to fully utilize Crystal Reports 9 and create faster, better reports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Connecting Crystal 9 to the Oracle DBMS
This book contains everything that I needed to extend my existing Crystal Reports 9 development knowledge into the Oracle DBMS realm. As an experienced CR developer, but one without any previous experience with Oracle as the back-end, this reference provided the necessary overview of the Oracle system along with sufficient supporting detail - to allow me to quickly acquire the skills to competently utilize the Oracle system in general, and some of its more advanced features on particular: Stored Procedures as datasources, REF Cursors, the MINUS Set Operation, Materialized Views ...Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Many errors in text
Palinski is full of errors, confusing and sometimes contradictory explanations. It seems to have been written by someone who is unfamiliar with Oracle, and just blindly compiled material from different sources.5-0 out of 5 stars Author of the book - realistic@radiks.net
The review by the reviewer from Lincoln does not pertain to this book. The book pertains to my book "Oracle Database Construction Kit" that was written in 1997 and is out of date even though the publisher continues to market it.At the time "Oracle Database" was published Forms Builder 4.5 was the current product and Oracle8 was just released.Oracle8i was still several years away.2-0 out of 5 stars OK, but lacking
There are only four pages on Oracle 8i. This book is written for the outdated Forms Designer 4.5. What a disappointment! The newer Oracle Forms Builder 6 is considerably different. Furthermore, the forms used in the exercises often will not compile, (because the author made the unfortunate choice of the PL/SQL-Forms reserved word "TOOLS" for one of the table names). You can drop the TOOLS table and create it with another name to make the examples work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, fulfills a large void in Oracle Documentation
Written much like the math textbooks of your youth (complete with exercises at the end of each section), Oracle Web Application Programming for Pl/SQL Developers is a godsend for those of us who knew you could write web apps using PL/SQL, but lacked the actual syntax to do so.Book can be used as either a reference or a tutorial guide, given that it is both comprehensive and chock full of sample code.Companion website is handy so you can copy and paste.Bottom line, if you want your browser to talk to your database and make it do neat tricks, this book will serve you well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book
I found this book very helpful as it explains the basics in a very clear, easy to understand language and has lots of examples. It's a high quality interactive manual: first the concepts are described, then I was presented with exercises, which is very good as most of us learn through practice, experince. The answers and clarifications which are given after the exercises unit helped me monitor my understanding and in the end I had the complete application and a great feeling of achievement. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book certainly but not exciting
I am using this book as supplement for the Building Internet Applications I and II study guide by Christopher Allen. I bought this with the intent to get some information on report not covered well in the book. This book certainly has the information I wanted. This book may be written for a beginers. The book has useful information but overall I was not excited about the book. But I still give 4 stars for the contents.
3-0 out of 5 stars Joe or Matthew
In my view the 'From the back cover' in the editorial review is eufimistic. It also annouces Joe Duer as the author.3-0 out of 5 stars For beginner

This book is badly written, and the organization could be considered bizarre or non-existant, depending on your point of view.5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for above average developers
If you are looking for an advanced, to the point, and concise book, look no further!I am surprised that there has been only one review so far for this book.Oracle Forms is a failrly complex piece of tool. This book teaches you the 'right way' of using the software. It provides a ton of advanced tips likeapplying object oriented methods in forms, advanced GUI programming etc.A comprehensive index allows you to find areas of interest very quickly.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for end-users - not much here for Administrators
Lots of tips, tricks etc. for end users trying to learn Discoverer.5-0 out of 5 stars The only game in town!
This is the only game in town as far as Oracle Discoverer goes.We use it on the job, and while most of the book doesn't work for us, since we use a specific pre-programmed EUL, the chapters on using functions are what makes money for us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great all round Discoverer book.
I have used Oracle Discoverer for years now (ie: v.3.0, etc.) and I wished many times to have a book that I could look through when I needed help. I've taught courses in Discoverer at numerous companies to hundreds of users and this book would be an excellent resource for end-users to have. For the more advanced users there's plenty of information included as well. Having this book on my bookshelf by my computer is good and bad. Good - because there's always something I have to look up (even if I already know it, it's good to know it's there); and bad - because when an end-user sees the book, they always want to borrow it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Designer Users
Clear, focused, full of tips and techniques this book guides you generating forms and reports (even complex ones). It has adequate examples and enough discussion to assist you in choosing which technique fits best. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This is one of the best organized and most clearly written technical books that I have ever read. The authors clearly put a lot of effort into making a quality book. This is refreshing to find with so manyIT books that areobviously written in a rush to "scoop" other authors.4-0 out of 5 stars A descriptive indepth book for D2k
Aithough i haven't read through the full content so far it seems informative especially generation of forms.Key concepts have been well explained. As a Oracle consultant and having worked in many Oracle basedcompanies like BellAtlantic,USXchange etc and having used designer 2000 fordatabase generation for the past 8 months , i would recommend this book toall oracle designers /developer/Consulatnts and other ITprofessionalsRead more

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating and full of inaccuracies
This is a tutorial, NOT a reference. As an experienced Oracle/IT professional, trying to learn Oracle Forms from this book has been extemely frustrating. The author is verbose rather than concise.Important information about a single topic may be spread across several sections making it difficult to get an answer to a specific question. As another reviewer stated, the index is weak. The author offers many warnings and tips that I eventually learned to test out for myself because, in a lot of cases, were just plain not true. There are tutorials on OOP, SQL, and PL/SQL that are tedious if you already have that background.I'd reccomend this book only for someone with little Oracle background who has a lot of time and patience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
The book is full of typos and mistakes in the code examples. Even with that the book has been helpful in some situations but hard to use.It is written like a huge tutorial and if you don't get something in the previous section, the next section doesn't work.I just want to know how to do the code.I want specific examples that aren't dependent on other parts of the book. Why can't there be more books on this subject to choose from?

    1-0 out of 5 stars The Index was HORRIBLE.No CD? C'mon I paid [$$$]
A refence book without a good index becomes a novel you have to skim through.I had to do this on several occasions. What is sad is that the Table of Contents was pretty in depth (17 pages which is more than the index). When I need an answer I want a place in the book that will point me somewhere near the item I'm looking for.I was lucky because I had read the thing from cover to cover, so I had a general idea where to look.It covers the various form elements in advanced, but I could have gotten the same data from a help file.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that hot
could be a fairly good "first draft" of a book, but clearly not ready for publication. Many of the primary Oracle Forms features are not discussed at all and what is is done in a very confusing fashion. The entire book appears to be straight out of a word processor.
1-0 out of 5 stars Can't be done
In order to use the course (and the prerequisite courses) you need to download tons of Oracle software on a one-month trial license or spend a couple of thousand dollars. If you also have a job, this gives insuficicient time to do the course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for introducting students to Oracle Forms
I work in a position where I train professional programmers for our client. Most of our programmers are transferring from Legacy systems to our new Oracle system. We have started using this book as an alternative to more expensive classroom/online training and have found it very useful. The chapters are small enough to do in a sitting and the exercises help reinforce what was learned in the chapter. The current users are programmers who have been doing mainframe programming for 10-20 years and are just now transitioning to Windows programming.I'm amazed at the progress they are making through the use of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I am expected the next edition since this book is terrific!
As a matter of fact, I have read many books about Designer/2000 and I have never found a book as this, it made me to make money teaching step by step the whole Oracle Designer workshop included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for starters
The book is excellent. I went through the brief tutorial and it tells you the step by step procedure to do all things. The only drwaback is that the version of designer that I work in and that in the book are different so itis difficult when you come to final part to create database etc. Theauthors need to write a new book. Otherwise an excellent book.I definatelyrecommend this one for new users.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for providing a sense of how the tool flows
I use this book in training classes and for people trying to "pick up" Designer on their own. It's most valuable assets are a quick, down-to-earth language style and a tutorial that gives new users a quicksense of the what happens to all the information they're entering into thetool through the generation of Forms and Reports.Read more
