this product is awesome, but ull need extra help to get cert.
1-0 out of 5 stars Badly structured and written
I'm an experienced vb6 programmer and looked for a book to help me make the switch. I found this book diving into issues without giving you any prerequisites. I had a hard time understanding where he wants to take me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for exam, but you won't learn .NET or C# here
This book has some highlights, but it is tightly authored to the VS.NET version it comes bundled with. Some folks will find this a bonanza, but that's only if you're willing to rubber-stamp your exam. There's abundance of Wizard code specific to VS.NET 2003 version. I am working with VC# Express 2005 and many of the things are N/A in this environment. ... anyway, I could sort my way out by looking at the samples and learn that what used to be a Control is nothing more than a Class that derives from Controls and some additional boilerplate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice explanation of Enterprise Library
This book is a very solid introduction to the Enterprise Library. It's well-structured, clearly and concisely written, and the code examples are very solid -- and done in both C# and Visual Basic for folks who can't bounce between the two.
3-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately already out of date
This book does a fairly decent job of covering not only best practices and examples of the use of the Enterprise Library, but also its design.
5-0 out of 5 stars more powerful and modular code blocks
You might think of Microsoft Enterprise Library as a refactoring of many tasks common to applications. These could be for standalone machines or perhaps the application offers a network service, like a Web Service. Fenster describes how MS reworked earlier generations of application blocks into a more consistent offering, presented here. There have been numerous improvements to make your programming life easier.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not cover the important new features
I bought the book, based on previous positive critics here (Amazon). The implication was that this book covers the new features of SQL Server 2005.Well, the first one that I was looking for, the PIVOT (crosstab) is not even mentioned, let alone covered even briefly.I did not search all the new features, but if you want a book that cover both old and new features, this one is certainly NOT the one that you should look for.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Usable
The authors have experience both as T-SQL developers and trainers, and it shows. Essential concepts and techniques are explained clearly without talking down to the reader. There's thorough coverage of the most commonly used T-SQL elements, in an easy-to-read style. It's well organized and includes appendices and a good index, making it easy to use as a reference. I work with both SQL Server 2000 and 2005, so it's ideal that the book covers both environments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good for non-techie beginners!
I don't consider myself a techie but recently became interested in learning more about SQL and how it can help me do my job more efficiently. I found the structure, content and style of this book to be very useful in my quest to teach myself the program. It was easy to understand and helped me to learn the basics with a hands-on approach. My lack of experience caught up to me in some of the later chapters but overall I found the book extremely informative and I've benefited greatly from reading it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, comprehensive coverage...
It still somewhat amazes me that Visual Basic has stood the test of time like it has.It keeps getting updates and facelifts, and continues to "play well" in today's environment. If you need a comprehensive guide to the language and the programming environment, I think you would be well-served by the book Visual Basic 2005 for Programmers (2nd Edition) by Paul J. Deitel and Harvey M. Deitel. Not much seems to be missing, and there are a few features that would cause me to highly recommend it to the Visual Basic crowd...

2-0 out of 5 stars Appalling
I have not yet taken the exam, so I can only tell you about the material covered for it's own value.
1-0 out of 5 stars Go get another book if you want to pass the exam
This book gets one star because it does not cover the material required to pass the exam.I would have almost failed the exam had I used just this book for my preparation.Luckiliy I have used online questions from one of the web-sited listed on Microsoft's web-site and that helped me to pass the exam.
2-0 out of 5 stars confusing, vague, ambiguous, and difficult to read
This book uses words pretty loosely, and frequently confuses the readers. Explanations are not clear. Material is incoherent. Microsoft's proofreaders, reviewers, and/or editors did a poor job on this book. Buying it is a waste of money. Please look elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best C++ book I have read
This is the first time I am actually writing a review for a book, coz I find this book the best I have ever read for C++ programming. It serves great for sophomore level C++ programming class at my univ. and otherwise as a great book to have on your reference shelf too. It starts with an intro to setting up your programming enivroment in .NET and Borland enviroment. After that it delves into programming styles and techniques in general and then goes C++ fulltime. The chapters about pointers, advanced pointers and the debugging/optimisationare some of the best readings I have ever done on the respective topics. Throughout the book the material stays relevant to the title of the book and thus is a great reading for anyone who is making transition from java to c++ or from a beginner C++ programmer to advanced level. The book is great reading for strengthening C++ concepts. If you look through the contents of the book you might notice the only thing that the book lacks is a chapter on data structures. However dont let that fool you. You will be in a better position to perform pointer manipulation on your linked lists and trees after reading advanced pointers chapter in this book, than any other book that just has the code for the entire implementation printed. Besides the book is about letting you loose to do it yourself (rather than hand feeding you) which I believe is what programming books are about. The book has something about almost everythingin C++ and lot more like using the gnu debugger .Highly recommended for anyone who wants to have a strong conceptual knowledge of C++.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but errors and lack of depth detract
Overall, the book offers a balanced and well-presented introduction to C++. However, there are too many typos and mistakes for a programming text. O'Reilly needs to kick their editing team into gear. In addition, many topics could and should be explained more in-depth. As is, many topics are only lightly touched on and more of the nuts and bolts of the language (i.e. characteristics that really lead to a quality understanding) are omitted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Concept
I thought this book fit the need I bought it for perfectly: I wanted to be better as a programmer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the best books on Excel VBA
"Writing Excel Macros with VBA" is an excellent book on the use of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) for Microsoft Excel.Steven Roman provides a significant amount of information in a relatively short volume.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This is a very specialized book with a very specialized core audience and this text does what it says it does -- teach you how to write Excel Macros using VBA.Nothing too exciting here folks, very dry reading that is a necessary reference if you need to have more control over Excel than the everyday user does.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mr Roman's book is very good value.
Mr Roman is an extremely competent and clear writer. This book, whilst not as big as some, doesn't waste space with any padding, and boring repititious stuff you see in some texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Numerical Recipes Review
I've been using the book in C for several years and thought it was quite good, but the new C++ version is far and above better.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the one of the worst examples of coding I've seen
I just got my copy of the CD today. I was surprised to see that they had stripped off all the code comments provided in the books. All that is left is the terse library of routines with the single character variables we loved to use as a BASIC beginner.3-0 out of 5 stars The familiar Numerical Recipies routines without so much C
The numerical recipes books have always provided minimal but usable routines for most numerical applications. The C++ conversion supplies routines that have been barely changed from the C versions, but uses C++ to give you the minimum that C++ programmers demand: automatic memory management and freedom from scary macros and side effects .The authors also updated the code to support double precision floats and complex numbers where the C version does not.The implementation of vectors and matrices is so minimal that even matrix multiplication and addition are not supported. All manipulation is element by element. This may make the routines less readable but has one big advantage: you can plug any vector or matrix library into these routine in place of their built in ones and expect everything to work instantly.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No peer.
I use(d) this book as the basis towards my WIN2K MCDBA...It is superior to anything out there including Microsoft's Official MCSE [Exam 70-228] SQL Server 2000 SA Training Kit... includes everything one needs assuming one immerses oneself in the book from Day 1 through Day 21 in addition to Day 22 (SQL Server Analysis Services (OLAP)) and Day 23 (English Query). It is both a superior reference book and programmer's guide. After purchasing Microsoft's official references I found myself repeatedly (frustrated by their shortcomings and referring back to this particular SAMS text). Enough cannot be said about this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars I liked the book
The book was ok. It has taught me a lot. However, it is not without its easily seen errors.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Book
I have a LOT of access experience and wanted to move to SQL Server.

Visual Basic 2005 In A Nutshell is a wonderful companion reference for any and all VB developers. With the new features in the 2005 version of VB, this guide is a great book to have by your side when you are working on your latest Visual Basic application.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise with great examples
This is a fantastic reference book for VB prorgrammers. The examples are great. They aren't too long and get right to the point of what they are trying to illustrate. The organization is perfect and the writing is crisp.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book
I've always missed the printed help manuals that used to come with development tools.I used to carry them around with me and browse through them whenever I had a bit of time.So I was happy to read this book, which has a nice big PRINTED reference section. There are several sections that cover various topics such as object orientation, data types, delegates & events, operators, and so on.The book also covers the new features of Visual Basic 2005, such as operator overloading and generics. My favorite part is the section on the My namespace. Cool stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Guide to ASP.NET 2.0 Security
This is a book by a MS Developer Security MVP for any and all developers writing ASP.NET 2.0 applications. Not only does it cover all the usual suspects and provides practical prescriptive guidance on how to deal with them with examples; it also deals with the tough "hot topics" like partial trust. The book is both complete in breadth and depth and really does provide a single good reference book on ASP.NET security.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book.
As an experienced Java developer who was "forced" to move into the C# and .NET world, I turned to this book to help me make that transition. I am very glad I did so. This book provided nearly all of the background I needed for that transition, and it still serves as my primary C# reference a year later. (By the way, working in the C# and .NET world is not as bad as I feared it would be.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good!
After about 5 years as a java developer, I took a new job as a .NET / C# developer. This book was a great starting point for me.Going from java to c# is a relatively easy transition, but this book makes it much easier and quicker. The book compares the two languages and highlights the differences which made it easier for me to pick up.I'm not a person who reads many books, for work or pleasure, so I don't have much to compare it with. But out of the 10 or so books in my work library, this is the second best book I've used.(The best I own is Effective Java.I'd really like to get one like that for c#.)
5-0 out of 5 stars for the experienced java developer
This books hits the spot for java developers, the intended audience. A one page description on delegates, for example, has all the information you need to get started with delegates. The Oreilly book has a long winded chapter on it and the essence was lost in the obtuse example provided. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SQL RS Beyond the basics (and some basics too)
If you're a moderately skilled programmer, a self-learner, and you want to get beyond just "getting started" deploying and using Sql Server 2000 Reporting Services, this is the book for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and surprisingly good.
For a total beginner (which I definately was) this is a FANTASTIC introduction to Reporting Services. Three months after starting my first job as a programmer straight out of University, and now I'm the main person in the firm with Reporting Services knowledge - and it's all thanks to this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for developers
This book has been written from a VB programmers point of view. If you want to just start creating reports or if you're not a VB programmer (ie DBA etc) you may find this hard work.As another reviewer mentioned, you may find the authors' jokes and writing style to be a hit and miss affair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good work
This is a great reference guide to use when programming on Windows CE. The examples are good to use as templates. The author is good at explaining and for sure the information covered in the book is relevant. There were several pages in the book that hadn't been printed, but luckily the whole book also came in digital format on a CD with the book. The book is quite thick but I can't say there is any nonsense in it. Now I'm just waiting for an update to Windows Mobile 5.0. Hey Doughlas, get busy!
1-0 out of 5 stars .net and CE
Looks can deceive (title). It's a good book to learn all (almost) about windows CE but it's a pitty that only the last chapter treats a small piece of the .net approach. So if you are interested in learning windows CE in using the last visual studio 2005 beta this isn't the book need !

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
This book is awsome! This book is for someone that has a strong C++ background but does not have to have experience with the windows api in order to begin programming on a CE box. If you know the windows API a lot of this book might be review. The book also does not go into a lot of depth about the architecture of windows CE. It also only skims over sections about bluetooth, smartphone, pocket pc and other technologies that you may want to use on your ce box. Along with this book you will probably want a reference book specifically on Embeded studio and on whichever technologies you are using. For the price and the coverage this cant be beat. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner to mid-level book
This is an easy to read book with the detail you would expect from a pocket consultant. The author doesn't waste time with the basic chit-chat and does a good job of laying out the useful material.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stanek bats a thousand again!
This book is really worth every penny it costs. It is packed with useful information, well written, intelligent, and enjoyable to read. Just the chapters on IIS applications, side by side .NET configurations, and pooling are worth the whole book: it goes through every detail.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Good One
