4-0 out of 5 stars Nice information, puts it all in context...
OK...I can see why Microsoft Visual Studio has been such a popular IDE for developers.Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Unleashed from Lars Powers and Mike Snell does a nice job in explaining the value of the latest version of this classic, as well as being an in-depth guide to the feature set...
4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction for novices and intermediate VS2005 developers
This is a pretty impressive book, albeit a bit lengthier than it needed to be.There's tremendous coverage of everything, and I mean everything, in Visual Studio 2005.If you're new to VS 2005 then you'll find this a great guide to getting the most out of your environment. If you're fairly familiar with VS 2005 then you may still find a few goodies hidden away here too.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, but.......
It's been a long wait to start seeing books about the Visual Studio 2005 environment. You might expect that after such a long wait, the books coming out would provide you with some valuable insights into the usage of VS2005. And, to some extent, this book does provide that. There is very good coverage of the basics....the structure of the VS IDE, how to create forms, how to create webservices, etc. But, after you go through all the work of designing and coding these neat programs, you of course want to be able to roll them out for use.At that point, this book seems to lose its mission, UNLESS you happen to be using the MS Team System, because after spending 16 chapters instructing the reader on how to use a variety of tools available in most versions of Visual Studio, the book starts to discuss production publishing and deployment, but ONLY if you are using MS Team System.

4-0 out of 5 stars Industrial strength book
Many OO/Patterns books are written as an introduction to the concepts and gloss over the nuances of building software in the real world. This book takes on the nitty gritty of what most developers face day to day. While it does include the gratuitous "student registration" example, this book actually delves into issues such as integrating legacy code.It also actually implements bad design choices before moving on to better solutions, and even these solutions are described in terms of trade-offs between competing forces. Also, by discussing specific Design Patterns in more depth than the cannonical format, I had a few "a-ha" moments when patterns I never quite understood emerged.I would/should have given this book 5 stars, but I had problems with the layout (oversized pages/no margins), the inconsitencies of diagrams (clouds and UML), and the disjoint feeling that the book was a collection of separately written articles, although the author does tie them nicely together. All in all, this is a must have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading - none better
Absolutely no one writes as well, knows as much, or has as much to say about designing world class programs as Robert Martin. This book should be on every serious programmer's shelf; whatever language you happen to be programming in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on principled software development
If you always wondered how to find the "right" abstractions - which are nowadays called objects - in your programming. This book gives you an idea what the guiding principles should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haven't come across anything this can't answer for me...
It's about time MS put out a reference set that covers the most important topics, not abstract one's. I like this reference set alot so far because of it's thurough coverage of the Document Object Models (DOM) for Access, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc. I haven't gone through the whole thing yetbut the only left for me to find is where they talk more about automation, something pretty much left out of the Office 97 reference set. Overallthough, this is a great set of books to have at your disposal. It hasalready helped me come up with solutions for the custom-businessapplications and macros I create. There is also alot of material thatwasn't in the last series. A great asset to any company with VB or VBAprogrammers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Finally Help for the Office Developer
I've been working with MS Office 2000 for several months. The extended Object Models have become more powerful for the end user, but more complicated for the developer.I recently purchsed this set of books.Wow!What a difference. This library unfolds all the mysteries of theMicrosoft Office 2000 suite as well as some very helpful guidelines forVisual Basic for Applications (VBA).With these books, I've been ablethough to walk through examples, and create customized solutions for myusers. Can't wait for the sequel!Well worth the money.I expect toreap benefits ten-fold over the costs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and understandable - really learn MFC
I purchased this book a number of years ago when I started a new job which required me to program using MFC.I had never done any programming for Win32, let alone using MFC (which wraps around the Win32 API).Coming from this state of ignorance, it only took a short time of working with Prosise's book for me to gain enough confidence to start writing MFC programs on my own.
4-0 out of 5 stars Truly beautiful work BUT........
no practical programs. Both "Windows programming" of my boss,Charles Petzold and the book taking draw, game programs to demonstrate.
5-0 out of 5 stars who says it takes longer?
I managed to muddle my way through simple dialog-box based applications with hardly any documentation -- just advice from colleagues. When I got assigned to write a real live multi-threaded, multi-document app, I tried the books lying around the office which had helped me considerably with the simpler apps, but which left me much confused about things like device contexts. Why all of a sudden CClientDC instead of CPaintDC? And what is a DC anyway exactly? They say, "See, if you do this and this, then you can draw an ellipse that wiggles around." So I do that, and then try changing parameters, and am left only able to draw that ellipse. I can't make it purple.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pump-primer for ASP.NET developers
For .NET developers new to test-driven-development who want a recipe for the process, an invaluable book. This is not a concept book, but rather a concrete example that gets a little loose towards the end. Those who have also adopted Model-View-Controller for their ASP.NET applications will be able to logically extend the first half of the book to test their web interfaces, something that is admittedly difficult using the "stock" ASP.NET design philosophy.
5-0 out of 5 stars First exposure to test driven development
I attended a workshop on test driven development presented by James Newkirk. I was so intrigued with the concept that I had to go out and get his book to find out more. As a result our project now uses NUnit, TestDriven.net for test driven development and find that this has really boosted confidence in the developers and their code. The concept of test-driven development is a very useful agile method of writing code to the requirements based on tests (Red/Green/Refactor). This has certainly changed my perspective towards development and want to thank James Newkirk for purveying this concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this book in your Agile Library!!!
Test-Driven Development in Microsoft.NET rises head and shoulders above the other books on the subject. While I know that is a very strong statement to make, the authors have made the focus of the book a very practical one.Don't get me wrong, there are several other great books on this subject, but they all seem to fall down when it comes to real-world situations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Try getting useful information out of this thing
Organization? Perhaps in a Faulkner stream-of-consciousness sense. "Applications" is _chapter 14_. The topic emphasis has little to do w/ the needs of most developers. You get two entire chapters on "Design Time Integration", whereas you get a small (two page) subsection on "Keyboard Handling" and likewise "Scrolling". Gee, how about if I want to handle the _arrow keys_!? Maybe you could explain scrolling in more than a paragraph of English text? How about an example? To top it off, it's in a narrative & chummy style. Yuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Things You Need to Know to Write a Great Windows Forms Application
The basics of Windows forms programming are fairly obvious. You drag controls from the toolbox onto the design surface, set the properties as necessary, and wire code to the events. For simple apps this is all you need to know and you typically don't need to bother with the documentation.
2-0 out of 5 stars Try MSDN Instead...
What a disappointment. I went in to this book knowing almost nothing about Windows Forms. After reading it, I think I know less now than when I started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the Exchange section alone
I picked this up after noticing it in a book shop (sorry Amazon!).I'm an Exchange administrator and this book gave me some great scripting tips for managing and monitoring my environment.I haven't gone much beyond that since, to my regret, but the concept of packaging scripts was news to me, and I would love to find the time to try out some of the other more elaborate techniques in there. But of course, I am an Exchange Administrator ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as they say
This is an excellent follow on book to "Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide," ISBN: 0735618674, which was my previous bible. I had long ago advanced past much of what is written in that excellent foundation book for VBScript, and this advanced volume really fills in the gaps. After purchasing numerous VB and VBA references that are nothing more than syntax libraries, I feel I finally have the big picture on the capabilities of this technology with this book. It is all clear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises
It never ceases to amaze me how many scripting books, including this one, start off telling you that you should already have intermediate to advanced scripting skills before you read, yet spend an initial chapter explaining what an array or an object is.It leaves me feeling that their definition of what "advanced" is will differ greatly from mine.I am also always a little dismayed when throughout, a book plugs a costly script development studio and spends time pointing out why your chosen script editor isn't good enough for your projects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor!!
I wouldn't waste your money. I am only on chapter 2 and the mistakes in here are stacking up. Spelling mistakes, incorrect information and questions that say to pick an answer from a to g with the correct answer being h make it far from the ideal book to build your confidence or knowledge.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I've just bought the book from amazon, and first of all what I can say about it is that it's very cheap comparing if I bought it here in portugal. the price here is around 83 dollars, so I could almost buy 3 books with that money. really, buying from abroad is much more pleasant than buying in portugal... As for the book... well, better wait for it! :D

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so bad
I got this book with a little over 1.5 years of exchange experience and I know quite a bit but thought i could learn alot more and certify in it.Well this book did help me the 2nd time through reading it.The biggest help really was the practice exams.I took the study exams and learned more that way then with reading.I would recommend this book only to those that actually understand Windows 2003, 2000 and NT both directory structure and network structure. There is alot of networking involved such as firewalls and opening ports.Overall it is a good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gem, in simple terms.
I revisited this book after about a year, and took the time to really read the first 100 pages. In particular, the author's introduction to OOP via C# classes as data structures first, and asmore complex objects containing data and methods second, helped me really understand this concept --- maybe for the first time. 5-0 out of 5 stars books
I bought "C# for Dummies" for myself and "C# and Game Programming" for my son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for VB programmers
Although the "Dummies" title implies a "Beginner" book, this book falls into the "Beginner to Intermediate Developer" range. This is a good book for Visual Basic developers who want to make the conversion to C# or for the beginner. Like all Dummies series, there are ample examples and the author does a great job of explaining the C# language. Windows forms are covered in Chapter 17 and 18 but there is no discussion about Web development or using C# with Active Server Pages (ASP).Read more

Editorial Review

You can find bigger books about C, but you won't find one as authoritative or helpful as this reference manual. Harbison and Steele have now gone through four editions and are beginning to cover language differences which can surprise the experienced C coder moving to C++.As always, the authors do an excellent job of explaining what's standard and what it replaces. No hairy syntax has been omitted, so this volume can make wending one's way through obfuscated code, if not pleasant, at least less miserable. Whether you learned C from Kernighan or some massive tome, you'll want this volume as your day-to-day reference. And you won't mind buying a new edition once in a while, because you'll have worn the old one out by then. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Visual Basic.NET How to Program, Second Edition
I had to buy this book for a programming class in Visual Basic.Net.I've previsously had a course in Visual Basic and got an A so I am not new to programming.I say all that to say, this book falls far short of what I hoped I was getting for $100.I've typed in some of the example progams word for word and cannot get a simple program to work, generating random numbers, for example.I'm at the point now where I'll have to go shopping for another book in this subject, the Deitel book is nothing but frustration to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bottom Line.....................The Deitels rock!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to like
Remember when you had to read classical literature, and it seemed like the author wouldn't change paragraphs for pages at a time, and it was hard to keep your place, pay attention, or care? Well, this book is exactly like that. It is chock full of "information", I'll give it that. Problem is, their examples DON'T WORK. I'm trying to do SQL database management using the code from the book for a template, and it doesn't function whatsoever. I've wasted hours because this book is worthless as a reference, even worse as a textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Converted a hard-core C programmer to the STL!
I thought this book was great. It gave me allot of good ideas and showed me how to things I didn't know how to before. But the real selling point was that I loaned it to a coworker who was a hard-core C programmer. He scoffed at C++ and OOP in general; making statements like "Everything I need to do can be done in C". After reading three items in the book he was questioning his thinking and trying new things. His latest project is not only in C++ but it's also embedded in the STL. He's taken quite a liking to it and has learned a lot of new things.
5-0 out of 5 stars Standard Template Advice
This book will help you make better progamming decisons when it comes time to use the STL in a project.Scott Meyer is one of the best writers on the subject of programming. Here he shows you how to best use the Standard Template Library and avoid some of it's dangers. His examples are clear and help you better understand the rationale for his advice. His writing style is terse but pleasant.
4-0 out of 5 stars good STL book
I bought this book in a hurry for the purpose of using STL functions for my programming project. It does have some very good and useful advises and tips for dealing with various problems, and is not assuming the reader of it is too much of a entry level programmer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big...but it reads like a novel!
Great book and easy to read! Author explain theory in basicterms and then, he give scripts or examples of how it should work or be written at TSQL level. Index's book it's almost perfect; for being a 1400 pages book it is not difficult to find any topic on it.You will find a lot of nice SQL 2000 tuning tips which add an extra value to the book itself. Could be used as a MCDBA prep. book and of course, in your job or if you're into Databases Admin. and Design business.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
I was suprised but the book is really good for both beginers as well as experts. I learned a lot from this book even thought I have been working with sql server for a long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is...ok so now i think Sams is better than Wrox...lol
Well I needed a crash course in SQL server management and some T-SQL.I attacked this book head-on. The book is very comprehensive and i am very amazed. It really is a complete guide to the GUI on SQL server. If you want some hard core T-SQL guidance then get another book...in addition. Sams teach yourself t-sql in 21 days is great.
