5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advanced Organizer
First, I'm not a DBA but I install, maintain, and use SQL Server 2005 in lab and workgroup settings.
2-0 out of 5 stars First 3 chapters looks promising. After that it is useless
During reading the first 3 chapters. this book was very promising. Thethe author kept repeating himself "I will show you how to do this, to do that". But after the first 3 chapters, his writing becomes dull. Nothing useful to go on reading. Maybe He was rushing to publish this book or the style that he prepared to go into his writing just died out.Whatever reason, one thing I learned from this book is: What a SQL Server DBA is supposed to do on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. I read so many 5 stars books going into details about writing code to backup, restore, scheduling...etc. But those books forget one point: What a SQL Server DBA is supposed to do on a daily basis. Maybe it is not important for an experienced DBA but it may be important for other I.T guys who want to be DBA. That's why we read books for.
2-0 out of 5 stars Careful
A pet peeve i have w/ Microsoft books is they just mirror the help files. This admin guide is not much more than regurgitated help files. I was hoping for some useful examples, closer to real life problems & solutions. Not there. Plz use the help files in Books Online to look up topics THEN examine the same topic in this book at a local bookstore BEFORE buying it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Is Amazon Pulling a Fast One?
Surprise! I'm reviewing Amazon. Your reviews for Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Learning Edition discuss the compiler that comes with the books, so people would naturally assume the compiler is included with the used books you're selling. It is NOT INCLUDED. Site visitors must click on details to learn that. Look, I know you don't have nearly enough billions yet to satisfy you, but play fair. Tell visitors on the review page that the compiler, the most important element in the reviews, is NOT part of the package.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This package has EVERYTHING that you will need to learn V.B. 6.0 and compile executable programs on your own.The step-by-step manual goes at a good pace for someone with little programming experience. The programmer's guide book and MSDN Help Library have the information necessary for those going beyond the 'Basic'.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Those New to VB.
I found this book extremely helpful.I am a professor at Houghton College and purchased this book to write software for the genetics course that I teach.I had no prior experience in Visual Basic, although I have just taken a course in C++.The Step by Step guide is very helpful to orient users toward the visual basic environment, and has chapters on the syntax of the language itself, which is something I really needed. There are numerous helpful programs that come on the CDs, and I found the book extremely readable. In short, I highly recommend this book for its clarity and thoroughness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference guide for designing your SQL Server database
This guide not only provides references on SQL Server syntax, but also contains a brief review of best practices with database design. Includes all normal forms with database normalization, indexing, and data integrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars BestIT Book I Ever Read
This book is an amazingly clear and concise book, especially for the "non-gurus" among us.The explanations of general topics like normalization, the history of markup languages (in the XML section) are so well written you could give them to management and even they would understand what you are doing (maybe that's not such a good idea).Full of tidbits like why transaction logs grow so much faster than data files.Nielson writes about SQL Server 2000 as used in the real world, not just as an interesting piece of technology.Bravo!I would give it 10 stars if I could.I leave nitpicking to the gurus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book. Got something for everybody
You got to know the basics of Visual Basic before using this book. This book is a very good reference for learning Visual Basic 2005 and also for the advanced developer. It's good for beginners when you are in the stage of "How do I do this...". It's also includes updates for VB6 programmer who are upgrading to Visual Basic 2005 alerting them about the code breaking changes in Visual Basic 2005. The problems discussed are real-world that you may have faced or will face in your development.

3-0 out of 5 stars Let down by poor production.
Well written, but the publisher has let the author down with a poor index and even a poor table of contents that lacks subheadings, making it hard to look up previous definitions. Also black text on a stippled grey background was a poor choice for code listings (just a box around them would have been fine).

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a great book
I have purchased a lot of computer books over the years but this one has been one of the best books I have come across. It is not 1200 pages, it has no cute pictures or colored pages at all for that matter. It is not trending to those who have an attention span of 10 seconds with all sorts of visual cues and boxes. It is a solid well thought out book on programming. It has the best sample programs that I remember coming across. It is concise, and informative covering all the major topics. While the title is about visual studio 2005, the book is about programming in C#.Visual studio comes in late in the book, as it should, as a tool to program with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for C#programmers - Real Life Examples
I don't knowJeffery personally but I know Jeffery by his blog and now, his book.I can say this book covers topics that programmers come across more in a real-world environment, rather than focusing on those topics that you really don't use much in an OOP shop.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE ACCOMPANYING CD????
Beware, the book may be good, I just start reading it, but I can't look at the examples from the "accompanying cd" because Amazon hasn't made it available to me. I've written them 3 times and still no answer. Buy this book from the bookstore. Also, this ebook is very restrictive. I don't know if I can view it from other computers and it only allows me to copy 10 selections in 7 days, after that no more cutting and pasting.....beware of the limitations. I give this 1 star, not for content but for delivery and restrictions. spearsjunk@hotmail.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I'm an engineer who uses Project in my work and this book has been a great help. Every time I've had a problem getting the software to do what I wanted this book has provided a clear and consise explanation that helped me get through the problem. I'd recommend it to anyone who uses Project for major projects and doesn't have time to waste finding an answer on how to get the software to do what you want it to.

Editorial Review

Any programmer worth their silicon knows that it is wiser to invest time preventing bugs from hatching than to try to exterminate them afterwards. And this is one of the best books for developing a proactive attitude towards electronic entomology. Follow Maguire's advice, and your testers, supervisors and customers will love you. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maguire is my hero
This is hands down, my favorite book on software engineering. If you care at all about writing quality code, you should read this book. The examples are in C, but the concepts (defensive programming, code that detects bugs, etc.) apply to any language. I read this book early in my career, and have re-read it nearly every year since. The used copies are 8 bucks, and the book is worth 10 times that in practical knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please ignore previous negative reviews
I was shocked to see this book get some negative reviews. Those that blasted Microsoft missed the point. This book provides invaluable advice in a quick read. For example, "If you have to look it up, the code is not obvious," or, "If you find yourself designing a function so that it returns an error, stop and ask yourself whether there's any way you can redfined the function to eliminate the error condition." This is the book that convinced me to single-step all my code. The heuristics on proactive bug prevention, which are summarized in the appendix by the way, will save your team time and let you move on to adding features rather than fighting fires.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just look at the publishing date.
You are looking at a 10-year-old book with a bunch of green screens on the cover. What more can I say. I bought it in preparation for an interview with Microsoft. I did not find it helpful, except for a few pages that do help understand Microsoft culture (but you can learn much more about that on the net). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent C Primer
For an experienced assembly language programmer looking to apply C programming to embedded systems, this book has just the approach that suits my needs. Logically organized and very readable, it keeps layering concept upon concept, subtley bringing in different techniques, while informing not only about the language, syntax and use, but also about how compilers interact with various constructs.I also enjoyed the well thought out example programs and exercises.

3-0 out of 5 stars A tad older (23 years) than I was expecting...
I haven't spent much time with this book but I wanted to make sure others didn't experience the same surprise that I did with this book.I bought this book via the marketplace link above, and was shocked to find it is a book written in 1983 (mine is a 1987 reprint of the original edition).I thought the seller had listed the book on the wrong page, since the Amazon page says it was revised in 2000, but the ISBN # is the same...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent C Tutorial
After having unsuccessfully searched for the perfect C tutorials and also K&R C, I can confidently report that this is by far the best introductory text to the C language. You can think of it as K&R in a truly tutorial mode.Very complete coverage of language features and just the right amount of instructional aid without being too terse on the one hand (K&R) and without being to plodding and wordy on the other (Deitel and others). You should find it as a thorough yet relatively quick read.Kochan has a very nice writing style which makes the tutorial also very enjoyable and rewarding. The example programs are short and sweet; very similar to the kinds of programs found in K&R.There are also lots of appropriately challenging programming exercises at the end of each chapter and half the answers are available on the author's website (www.kochan-wood.com).Another good feature is that the tutorial is arranged by subject matter so you can use it also as a user-friendly reference in addition to K&R. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Money
This book lived up to and surpassed my expectations.
4-0 out of 5 stars A solid book on data-binding
Before this book, I had very little Windows Forms 1.0/1.1 experience. So, I can't speak to how well it works for people who are moving from the 1.0/1.1 world into 2.0. But for those starting with Windows Forms 2.0, this covers data binding to a depth I doubt will be surpassed by any other source. Ever.
3-0 out of 5 stars As long as you only want to bind to a data base.
This book (as the title suggests) is strongly geared towards data binding in the context of "Smart Clients."From this book, I take "Smart Client" to mean that you are only showing tabular data directly from databases. He spends 80% of the book talking about binding to data bases with the DataGridView control.Because of this, other aspects of data binding are neglected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive!A wealth of key information and examples
I found this book to be one of the best references for Excel VBA development. The book is easy to understand and follow.Contains a large amount of examples that can be easily understood.Addresses many critical aspects of excel VBA development. Not too much was spent on forms/GUI development so you will have to look elsewhere if you into that. Also addresses interfacing Excel to databases using ADO as well as API programming which is critical for superusers to extend the power of excel without the limitation of data storage.Overall, the authors have a superb job and I consider this book to be an essential of my Excel VBA library!

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disjointed
The first few chapters were a reasonable introduction to VBA for Excel, but after that, the examples, while being quite relevant and useful, seemed somewhat random, and did not strike me as being well supported by the text.

The book is poorly named. "Unleashed" suggests to me wild and wonderful things to do with complex features or even tricks and undocumented things. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a really great book and gives you an easy way to get into design patterns for C#. The code samples are very easy to understand but cover quite everything in design patterns. The author tries to show the reader where .NET implements those design patterns and how they could have been implemented in a more powerful way.

The writing style is clumsy and stands in the way of the material. Avoid this book.

I thought the book was great. It introduced patterns with a semi explanation of how thier implemented in the real world. It also explain why and how of each pattern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure, the book isn't perfect but ...
the author did post his errata online and this book isn't really all that bad for those who'd like a decent intro to Visual Basic unlike what the book's haters would like to have you believe.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down!
I bought this book because I got my start in computer science by learning ASP with a Sams book. Since that time I have earned my associates degree and am about to complete my BS in computer science.
5-0 out of 5 stars For Job related Business Programming: Good source
Hmm this is weird, I am the only one who is writing a good review on this book. Whats up with that. Maybe the people who wrote the reviews are not actually programmers but confused minds. Please accept my apologies. I think this book is a very good source on VB 6.0. I used this during my Master's Program, during my Internship and in my professional life. I dont know what people are expecting, but this is a good medium level fast paced source on VB 6.0. If you have to write a quick VB App, and dont have much time on your hands, pick up this book. If you want to be a VB guru then this is not what you want. But for starters and quick reference people who use VB 6.0 from time to time, I would highly recomment this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars learn how to use patterns with Qt
The authors teach two things. The use of design patterns in C++. And how to integrate these with the Qt widget package, when you are writing applications that need a GUI. Several of the chapters show that even if you are not writing a GUI, you can still use the Qt framework. Within this, various patterns are taught.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
The layout and design make for easy reading. The book makes heavy usage of examples ... downloadable from the Internet; this is especially beneficial since it's easier to learn abstract concepts through examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most invaluable references I have in my library
I'll keep this brief, as my title says it all.I have been developing access applications on a professional level for many years.Have several applications that large companies use to run there business. This cookbook has helped me in more ways then I can count.I wish I could find more like it.I use it just as a cookbook.Look thru to find a similiar situation that I am trying to solve. The examples are written very well. The code is very exact and on the money. While most of the examples listed are not always exactly like what I'm trying to solve, it definitely gets the creative juices flowing on how to solve my problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes for Access Developer Success
The Access Developer's Handbook Set (search ISBN: 0782140114) and in particular, Volume 1: Desktop Edition (search ISBN: 0782123708) is my definitive resource to approximately 4 years of Access development.I've got more stickies and highlights in this set than all other Access books combined. So when I came across the Access cookbook and realized that the same two indispensible authors (Getz & Litwin) put together a resource of Access developer solutions, I had to have it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Access Developers.. this is a must have!
When I started my job, my first assignment was develop several Access databases. What they wanted was beyond what I knew of Access. After buying this book and Access Database Programming and Design, I was well on my way to develop a quite advanced Access database application. I would ask myself, "I wonder if I can..." After consulting this book for the anwser, BAM! I found it there. This book covers everything from simple VBA to advanced techniques such as incorporating a email system into a database, linked dropdown combo boxes using SQL, and creating VB Form control that tells you who all is currently in a database using ADO and VBA! I would say anyone wanting to cook a mean Access database should definitely pick this one up. It is an invaluable reference if you want to develop professional Access databases with incredible functionality! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best C Book I've Ever Read
This is definitely the best book on C that I have ever read. King presents just about everything there is on the language in a clear and easily understandable way. One thing that I loved about this was King's mentioning the %g format specifier, which is something that has been very useful and that I haven't seen mentioned too frequently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning C is easy with this book
This is the second of King's books I have purchased. It is also the second that I am very very pleased with.
5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
This book was not my first. I had previously tried starting C programming with An Absolute Beginner's Guide to C. It worked well for a little bit, but I had to stop due to a lack of clarity and motivation. C Programming: a Modern Approach is such an improvement from my other programming book. C Programming: A Modern Approach doesn't treat me like I'm stupid...it's clear enough so that I gradually understand C lingo over the course of the book. My current work with it so far has been very smooth and...not easy...but effective. The exercises at the end of each chapter aren't a waste of time...they're useful and also not overdone. It's simply a cut above the rest. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
If you need a book to introduce yourself in data structures, thats not your book. This books are for consult, not to learn, cos there are leaks : insuficient code, insuficient large explanations and drawings about TDAs. Furthermore, its expensive.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to _really_ understand red-black trees.....
Any professional programmer would benefit from having these books at hand.Excellent discussions of the basic algorithms which every programmer needs to know.
