101 rules, guidelines and best practices
The book clearly pushes forth a lot of pragmatic content that should be thoroughly adopted by the 80-percentile of all programmers "out there."For the 20% who would argue that a "guideline" isn't etched in stone, the rest of us need not worry.
Excellent resource for C++ Software Engineers
The book presents some excellent fodder for a developing a project's coding standards.As with Sutter's other books and columns things are very solid from a technical perspective.Every project would need to evaluate these and other rules/guidelines for themselves (for example embedded projects may have different rules than other applications).

Benchmark book on Computational Finance
Mark has produced a marvel. The book introduces practical C++ programming with such spontaneity. The author sets the pitch beautifully with a step-by-step introduction of the need of advanced computing. It handholds reader as it expands from basic oops programming to designs and patterns in computing while mentioning rare tips on efficiency requirements when pricing derivatives versus robust programming.
Full of OOP Wisdom!
In terms of programming concepts and OOP design for financial engineering, this book has no equals. We have Daniel Duffy's Financial Instrument Pricing Using C++, but it takes a different approach (i.e. generic programming based in STL). All through the book, the author introduces improvements sequentially and doesn't start from the best design from the outset in order to demonstrate the flaws of a less general/useful/reusable program. In this sense, this is mainly a conceptual book, not an example book. For example, it deals with and develops vanilla-option pricing using Monte Carlo simulation over the first five chapters. A reader looking for a cookbook that gives programs to implement a large number of financial-derivative models would be well-advised to look elsewhere (e.g. Justin London's Modeling Derivatives in C++). However, someone looking for OOP wisdom would be generously rewarded for buying this book.

Good not Great...
Glenn Johnson has a very good book here on ADO.NET 2.0.Unfortunately, it just good not great.Here are my pros and cons:
Not quite what I was expecting.
This book does delve deep into the plumbing of ADO.Net 2.0, but I must admit that when I read the "Advanced Topics" part of the title, I thought that it would actually cover more complicated versions of some scenarios that might be found in "beginners" ADO.Net books such as handling many-to-many data relationships with bound controls and possibly designing and building a data access layer. While data access layers were covered to some degree, the described methods involved intensive interaction with SQL Server system tables - something I don't tend to make a practice of.
Great book, missing practical use.
Great book for ado.net. I wish this book has covered "how to use new features of ado.net with business layer. There should be some more chapter(s) for data acesss layer utilizing ado.net.

Teaches "Roberts," not C
This book is annoying with the way the author asks the user to write programs using his custom library functions, as opposed to the standard C commands.Because of this, I did not learn about scanf until probably the 7th or 8th week of the C programming course I was in.I feel like that alone warrants a 1-star rating.If you buy this book, you will be learning to program in "Roberts," not C.

I have read and worked through both of Eric Roberts books on C.
The Art and Science of C
I thought this was a wonderful beginners book. It gave me the basics and then allowed me to go on and try new things by myself. By the end I really felt like I could write my own programs in C.

Like it so much, upgrading to 4th edition
I have the 1995 (Second Edition), and I like it so much I'm upgrading to the 4th edition. The 4th edition has 400 more pages and I can't wait to see what else has been included.

Excellent Reference
I had several C++ books left over from college that just weren't cutting it as references.After browsing several books I picked this one and it is all I wanted and more.I have yet to come up with a question this book couldn't answer, and it's easy to find too.Clear, correct, succint, and well-organized, what more can you ask for?Covers C and C++ equally well.

Absolutely Complete
I bought this book for a university course, and it is one of the few C++ books that I can say is fully complete. It has proven to be an invaluable asset to me as just about anything you can think of relating to C++ is inside. One of the reviewers below said that the book starts off mentioning things about C and doesn't go into depth about C++. This is not true at all; the author uses C as a guideline to serve as an introduction to C++. In fact, there are instances where using C maybe more feasible to C++, so that information he mentions about C is useful.

This book is now obsolete.
I bought this book and quickly discovered that Visual Book 6 is no longer the latest tool for VB programming.Microsoft has introduced Visual Basic 2005--which you can download free from Microsoft.
Excellent Starter Book
I used this book, and found it very helpful to begin writing vb code.The only drawback is that it is of course covers only the basic stuff with very little background info.If you want to get started in VB, I would suggest this book to anyone.

First Visual Basic book
When I was trying to make the upgrade from Visual Basic 4.0 to Visual Basic 6.0, this was the first book that I bought. This book is very easy to read and there are ample examples to illustrate each principle that the author is trying to teach you. I combined this books with the 4 "Learn to Program Visual Basic" books by John Smiley to give me a solid foundation in Visual Basic 6.0.The cartoons in this book will reduce down the stress of trying to learn something new.Read more

A very useful, easy to use book on templates!
This book is a natural for anyone who needs or wants to hone their skills using C++ Templates.Anyone with 15-minutes to spend can immediately pick up the book and begin writing their own templates in C++ even though this is not a traditional "step-by-step" learn-everything-in-a-day kind of book.The authors are recognized as experts on the topic in the C++ world.More importantly, they convey templates without the complexity perceived by the syntax that seems to scare people away from templates early on...while presenting templates in their full syntactic glory albeit with an easy, thorough and thoughful introduction that appropriately paces rather than brain-dumps.

Nice, but may not be a good first choice.
This book is encyclopedic. It will tell you everythingabout templates, both every detail at the languagelevel and everything interesting someone has done with templates in the last 10 years. It even tells youfurture changes that might happen to templates in 4-8years when the C++ standard is revised. This last isuseful to know, to keep in mind what templates cannotdo, as sometimes it feels like templates can doanything. Though the writing is somewhat dry, it isalways clean and to-the-point, and the authors have the highest reputations for accuracy and expertise.

a developer's best friend for c#
"Essential C#" does for C# what Deitel did for Java.It's great book to learn C# from the ground up or for experienced developers.I was a bit skeptical of the claim that the book is for everyone - beginners, experienced developers, structured programmers, C/C++/Java developers and C# professionals.However, through a combination of sidebars and text that makes sense on different levels, the author managed to achieve this lofty goal.

Michaelis presents a straightforward rendition of the most important ideas in C#. Readily understandable to anyone who has already programmed in C++ or Java. It will be a little harder if you have never coded in an object oriented language.

Thorough, Instructional, with great code samples
This book has gotten me out of many scrapes.It is a rare book that can be read from the beginning, while trying out the sample code, as a way to learn the language, or as a reference book, to look up how to use a certain function effectively while writing code.Don't let the title fool you, this book is for those coding in VB just as much as it is for those using VBA.If you are going to buy one book on Visual Basic, let this be the one.If you are going to buy one book on Visual Basic, and see one movie this year, then buy this book and see Amelie. ;)

a work still in progress, but quite intriguing
WCF is a very promising new technology being put out by Microsoft. You should take note that it is still actively a work in progress. Made clear both by the text in the book and by postings from other reviewers and the authors. There is indeed a potential drawback, inasmuch as specific coding details may get obsoleted by an eventual stable production release. But before you are tempted to turn away, keep in mind that the very title cover of the book says "Beta Edition". The advantage is an early, informal look at WCF.

A good book, but only for a few select people
This book is well written and easy to follow.It is a great book if you fit into one of the following categories.
Wow!
Coming from a PHP background, this book was a perfect and thorough introduction to Objective-C. This is a great book for starters, and especially for people who are coming from a background in a non object-oriented language. After reading this book, I feel confident enough to write a fairly complex and powerful program that takes advantage of Objective-C and NextStep features (for the command line - you'll need to learn Cocoa for GUIs). In addition, there is a handy appendix that recommends a few invaluable books that will bring you further to becoming a full-fledged Cocoa programmer.
Great Intro to ObjC and OOP for beginners
I bought this book out of frustration, after trying to work through other introductory books on Objective-C and Java.This book provides straightforward explanations, clear example code, and end of chapter exercises that are not impossibly difficult.The author has even posted the answers to the odd numbered exercises on the book website.Thank you for this!

From Beginning to... Well, Some Tough Stuff!
This book is very well written, and the facing page style of instruction is a great method.
In other words ...
Not bad for beginners. But it's a far cry from being "the best book you can find on the subject". I suggest Mike Murach gets a bit humbler with those statements. The content is good, and if the author hadn't managed it to fill pages artificially with reformulating what she had just said, this book would have come out with less than 300 pages. Now take out the ridiculous two-page format and you could write this one on 150 pages.

Good foundation in VB.NET
I have been working with vb.net casually for several years but had alot of areas I was still weak in. I purchased this book recently and it helped me to get a much better fundamental understanding of the subject. I wish I had read it first. Excellent book!
This is an excellent book. I had the book for a long time already, but only started yesterday. I used to find it complicated. A few days ago I had a plan for a program, but I just didn't have knowledge of the right language, which is C++.
A good book for beginners.
I have had this book for several years and am just now using it to learn C++.The book has an unusual style in that it repeats itself adding slightly new increments as it goes along.This is great for a beginner or an intermediate programmer with some bad habits. It would drive an expert crazy.

Great P2P
Before buying this book, I had no idea what .NET was. This book gave me the insight from the ground up to a fairly advanced features of .NET 2.0. Now, I am evangelising .NET to my whole team and pushing to upgrade from (the out of support) VS v6.0 to VS 2005.
Pretty good book to know .Net FrameWork
I liked this book pretty much. Contents are well organized and clearly described. Lots of pointers to good reference materials for topics discussed and not discussed. Gives an indepth knowledge of how objects are created and handled. It's pretty interesting and you can't just keep the book down.

Doesnt worth its price
Provided you have NO knowledge on C programming and microcontroller, otherwise you dont really need this book. I personally think that big portion of contents could be found in CCS's manual and sample code FREE.
Excelent book for a Newbie!
For a Newbie on PIC C programming like me, this is really an excellent book. It teaches C language programming, helping the reader to create an entire program (step-by-step). Also, the reader can understand the PIC architecture and learn how use a C compiler (like CCS C). Finally, the reader can learn and try to implement a complete project using microcontrollers. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking to make a travel through the field of microcontrollers and embedded programming.

Do not bother
This book is a joke. It is poorly written, the grammar is crazy and wrong, and it dwells too much on events that are not important (click next, and click next, then click ok, and then next...). You would be well-advised to read another book, as well as BOL, before attempting 70-228.
passed first ime.... but....
I just passed 70-228 first time using just this book and BOL as guides. I found the first half of this book a waste of time.Way too much attention to how-to examples of performing steps in the GUI (Click this, click next, click OK).The second half, however, was much more useful.One thing though.It is useful in that it offers a failry concise, objective by objective, summary of what you will need to know for the exam and then points to BOL for the actual information.It is short on providing information in and of itself.
A complete waste of time and money!
Luckily I am already an Oracle DBA or I would not have been able to make real-world sense of the material presented in this book. In my opinion, it is pretty much worthless if you are preparing for the 70-228 exam or if you are wanting to work with SQL Server on the job. However, it is a great doorstopper/paperweight (which is why it is worth one star). Yes, I have passed the 70-228 exam, but I can guarantee you my passing had absolutely nothing to do with this book! ... Read more

A very good book for self-learner
My boss asked me to develop a leave system. I have no experience about Access VBA before. I bought a lot of books. However most of them are too thick and theoretical. No step by step examples are provided. Fortunately after reading this one, I can finish my task now.
