this is a great book if you wanna learn c++ or game programming. it gets you started in both areas. it explains everything very well and teaches you how to write ms-dos batch files and stuff like that to go with your cpp applications. also the disk comes with a good IDE Dev-C++. Great Buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beginning C++ Programming -- With game examples
As mentioned earlier, this book is more like an introduction to c++ than it is an introduction to game programmnig for people already knowing c++.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is truly excellent and unparalleled in detail
I have owned this book for at least seven years and have made a couple of good attempts to read/study it with some success as it may not be the best first book for programming the Win32 API although it certainly treats the subject in excruciating detail and with insights garnered by the two authors who are two of the most consummately professional programmers in the world - Brent Rector and Joseph Newcomer. For example Herb Schildt's Programming Windows 98 from the Ground Up teaches WIN32 programming and I find myself more productive in less time studying that book, even though WIN32 programming teaches with a philosophy that one is (ultimately) going to be writing large multifile programs, and this philosophy isn't apparent in Schildt's book. Additionally, an added bonus of Win32 Programming are the insights one gets into writing more robust and professional code - the C code (and there is a lot of it - 140,000 lines included on the CD ROM) has been written by the very best programmers.Additionally, the treatment of each topic is probably more in depth in this book - one example being the discussion of the GDI. More advanced topics included are chapters on writing a DLL, writing an MDI application, and writing multithreading applications. Finally, at 1500 pages the book is reference-like and also like a textbook thus I would assume that it may well take the better part of a year to study each chapter and the associated applications, making it one of the finest and most comprehensive books ever written on WIN32 API programming. I paid $50 for it at UCLA and the book has stood the test of time and proves to be an invaluable work well worth the cost. Finally, this book would seemingly rank among the most professional and scientific computer science/programming titles ever written - certainly it would be one of the most massive - the index is around 200 pages long in itself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs editting
Very good on the level of detail, and incredible on the pitfalls and specific problems they found when actually writing the code for the examples.Be careful, though - a number of the tables (and even some of the printed code samples) contain typos and other minor errors (like missing headings, making one table pretty useless!).You can figure out what's wrong, but if you just use this as a reference and happen to hit a section with an error you might not catch it without reading the accompanying text.I read it through, rather than as a reference, and it was clear which parts of the text had only been lightly checked for the latest edition.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, not for beginners
If you are an experienced Win32 programmer looking for a good reference, or you learned MFC but want to know what's going on under the hood, this is the book for you.If you are a beginner looking for a book to teach you how to program Windows, do not get this book.Lots of tables, just the right amount of code examples, lots of real-world advice, and a 200-page index. This book does not cover MFC. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Explanations but not Practical
This book has generally good easily digestible explanations for Exchange 2003.I really appreciate the informal down-to-Earth style and discussion of a lot of pieces. I was especially happy to see some good coverage of LDAP, IMAP, and POP configuration, which is seldom adequately covered in other Exchange books.
4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, not too bad
I would hardly consider this book "Mastering Exchange" but the author does take the time to step you through all the property pages and settings so you at least get a basic idea of what it all means. You will have a solid basic understanding when you are done but you certainly won't be a master by any stretch of the imagination. I found several errors throughout the book specifically related to Windows and networking. The author should stick to Exchange because when the topic shifts to something else, I had my doubts about what I was reading. For instance, I believe the author stated that in an NT 4.0 Domain, if a PDC goes down, the other DC's elect a new one. WHAT!!!! Maybe a browser, but not a PDC. Its been a while since I read the book but I am pretty sure I read that in a side bar. As I said, overall, not bad if you what a basic intro to Exchange 2003. The title should be changed to Exchange 2003 basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor writing style
Maybe the content of this book is ok, but the writer has constant urge to put useless text lines and useless personal opinions between the technical explenations. This shouldn't be a story book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great translator for the rest
I took a UML class at university and was having difficulty understanding the textbooks.I bought this book to help me understand the concepts, which this book did admirably. When I showed up in class with this book, the instructor told everyone how great the book is, and he used the examples in class.Excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to the novice and guide to practioners
This book has an apprehensible way of introducing the main principles of UML and provides a step-by-step flow delivery. It helps the novice to gather a complete view of the areas involved while supplying a sufficient level of detail without overloading at the same time. Equally practioners will find it a handy guide for quick reference and tool application verification.
2-0 out of 5 stars Just for beginners
This book is just an introduction to UML. All the discussions that could lift this book to a more interesting level are left out. If you are only looking for definitions the book will do. If you want more in depth introductions to best practices, beyond what you can learn in a few hours of reading, this is not the right book for you. My advise - Buy the UML Bible as your first UML book, and spare yourself for hours of research trying to find the best way to get started with UML or just improving your UML skills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, but examples can be rather bland...
I've always been rather hesitant to read programming books with titles that imply a sacrifice of depth for gained ease in learning, but this book is a very well done and complete treatment of the fundamentals of the C++ language.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's in-your-face tech knoledge.
I found the information good, accurate, and intensely stuffed into the twenty one days. It's a good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to ASP.NET
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to ASP.NET. Some reviewers have stated that the chapters at the beginning of the book are too complex. This material is, however, fundamental to developing the ability to program ASP.NET pages effectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!!!
The book contains many descriptions about the new ASP.NET 2.0 and compares to older versions of asp.net and asp. It describes everything step by step so that it is easy to follow examples and learn ASP.NET 2.0 framework. It is great for begginers and intermediate users.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is one giant linked list
Based on the (only) other 3 reviews on this site, I decided to read this book. However, like I mentioned above, the book is one giant Linked List - let me explain: In every chapter, they introduce a hitherto unexplained topic and ask you to leap forward 10 chapters to learn more about it - for eg:
5-0 out of 5 stars recasting of ideas in terms of C#
In one sense, the book covers no new ground. The Agile principles and patterns discussed here have been well explained for two other languages, Java and C++, especially by Robert Martin in an earlier book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for a broad range of topics
As the other reviewer mentioned, this book is unique in its breadth. It does an excellent job of combining the development process with actual patterns and practices of development.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get up to speed on C#
If you're a VB developer who's frustrated by the many coding tutorials and books that present examples in C#, you NEED this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased!
I have some background in programming (generally small utilities)and I wanted to examine C#; this book was an excellent introduction to .NET and C# in particular. I especially appreciated the database sections because I will need to develop a database for my work and would like to use this in place of my old Visual Basic 6.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for quickly updating your skills to .NET 2.0
This is an excellent guide in using the latest version of C#, most effective for existing .NET 1.x developers looking to migrate their skill set up to v.2.0 code and concepts. The intent of the work isn't to teach C# from scratch, but more to give an overview of the major features .NET 2.0 offers. The book also serves a dual purpose - introducing the Visual Studio 2005 IDE and demonstrating how to make it work the best for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and definitely one of the best books on the Compact Framework
As the first Compact Framework book on the market, it helped light the way for all that followed. As a mobile developer, this book has helped me tremendously and I refer to it all the time. This book belongs in the collection of anyone who has to tackle the nuances of embedded development on the Windows Mobile platform.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I have learned a lot about the .NET compact framework. It has been a great first-book to begin my understanding of this topic. The examples in the book really help to advance my understanding.I highly recommend it for anyone looking to begin a project on the .NET compact framework.

2-0 out of 5 stars If this book's so great, why won't the code run?
Chapter 17, UsingSQLCESample. First, the buttonAdd_Click() event wasn't added to the button, so you click away and nothing happens, until you figure it out yourself & fix it. Then, the section in the book dealing with parameters is missing from the sample code, and the DataGrid never does fill with data. This job is difficult enough without having to spend time debugging some "expert's" sample code! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow
I purchased this book in order to add serial IO to my .NET programs.I have been very sussessfull using VB6 in the past but could not get a single code example from the CD ROM to work with Visual studio 2003.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete reference for VB serial-port programmers
This book covers serial-port programming in Visual Basic from VB's early editions through Visual Basic .NET, including programming for Windows CE. It's the most complete reference you'll find on the topic. Richard Grier has done a great job of keeping the book up to date through multiple editions. If you do serial-port programming in VB, this book will save you time and trouble.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Great Book
This is an excellent, excellent reference for using serial ports with VB. I can't say enough for this book. The author knows his material and communicates his knowledge very well. I am using it to write a communications program to interface with field devices using the modbus protocol. The book doesn't specifically cover modbus, but I still found this book to be very helpful. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction, a little code heavy
This is a nice introduction, reasonably well written, introduction to using Windows automation through VBScript. About a third of the book acts as an introduction to the basics of VBScript for use in this context. He covers basics like variables, conditionals, functions, error handling, and more. The other two thirds of the book covers a variety of topics like shell extensions, ASP, XML, active directory and more. This is up-to-date stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not to basic for this administrator
Was Joseph DeMarco (previous review) reading the same book? The book has several chapters on AD scripting, and they showed me how to create users, delete them, create OUs, and more. The book has THIRTEEN chapters on learning VBScript, which I didn't know and now I finally do. They're clearly written and they're not super-deep, so I got through them quickly. If you're a professional developer, this book isn't for you. If you're a systems administrator, I can't see how this book wouldn't be helpful.1-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic for System Administrators
I bought this book based on other customers' reviews. The book talks very generally about scripting for Active Directory. The book contains the word "VBScript", as well as "Managing Windows". However, it covers very little about the in's & out's of what it possible. The sections on ADSI are watered down and virtually useless. The script examples are simple, and aren't thorough at all. I found more information on Microsoft's web site. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition is outstanding as a tutorial and as a reference
I owned the first edition of this book, and although somewhat confusing, I was able to learn VBScript from it with some time and patience. Thus, I just expected the second edition to be an update of the first. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the second edition had been greatly improved. There are clearer and more frequent examples, the text is an easier read, and there are frequent and illuminating illustrations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for starters
I bought this book, as I wanted to write some simple VBScripts to help automating some laborious manual process for my job. This book is so easy to browse through and as I already have some knowledge of VB Programming and so I can easily browse through the chapters. Even for a beginner this is a good book to start with. I could start writing the scripts I wanted for my job and I like this book so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, be sure to buy the 2nd Edition
This is an outstanding book.At first I was confused by some of the older reviews, until I realized that Amazon is still selling the old 1st edition, and many folks are buying that one instead of the newer, much better Second Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book
Exceptional C++: 47 Engineering Puzzles, Programming Problems, and Solutions is very readable but should be read slowly and thoughtfully. The author packs an abundance of of good programming practices in a small book (less than 200 pages). You should have an in-depth, up-to-date, knowledge of C++ programming and the C++ Standard Library before tackling this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Code hackers only
I think that this book goes to much more details that anybody can grasp. If you have a concrete problem with a resemblanc with one of the chapters, ok, read this chapter. But don't look for something useful the 99% of times. I have been swallowed by the amounts of details. Go to C++ Gotchas if you are a beginer or non-literat programmer that don't want to read Stoustrup reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Microsoft Visual Basic 2005
Very useful reference book as well as a textbook
5-0 out of 5 stars BUY IT
If are you thinking about buying a book on VB then please do not waste another minute on thinking. Buy this book with you eyes closed. You will not regret. You will know all the stuff you have to know about VB from this book. The way the book is written, it is very easy to follow and even more easy to understand. This is a book that is like a BUTTER, just waiting to MELT in your mouth. A job very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This book is the best book I have found on VB.NET hands down. One of the reasons I bought this book, was the fact that it covers printing and graphics which other books just skim over. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended!
I am a software developer of over 30 years. While I am new to SQL server, I have been doing DBMS developement for over 15 years.2-0 out of 5 stars Not There.
Less chest-thumping and many more real world examples would have made this a better book. "SQL Server 2000 The Complete Reference" is over 900 pages and packed with lots of ink, but it lacks relevance and many times left me confused because of its hollow attitude.3-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for some people
Since this book was titled as a complete reference, and it received great reviews here, I decided that I should dive right into SQL Server with this book at hand.Unfortunately, I found that this book is not enjoyable to read for those of us who's attension is hard to hold.I imagine that many others (especially those who have some knowledge of the topic) would get some use out of it, but I'm posting this review to warn beginners, and people with short attension spans that this is not the book to start with even if you have technical knowlegde in other areas. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Needs technical review but has a ton of information.
I found the book extremely useful in getting me pointed in the right direction with Reporting Services. I used the book less as a technical reference and more as an overview of how Reporting Services works and what options are available for solving reporting problems in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
2-0 out of 5 stars A troubled work
Chapter 1 made several good points. Chapter 2 was more confusing in its presentation but I got something out of it. Chapter 3 began the hands-on so I installed the sample files and sample database contained on the accompanying CD-ROM -- only to find that I couldn't successfully install the database! The CD contains only the ".mdf" file for the sql database (no .ldf), not enough to "restore" or "attach"the database. Their script to install the DB also errored out. I was unable to locate any useful help or errata on the MsPress website. It looks like the authors spent a lot of time and effort developing the step-by-step examples so I'm quite disappointed that I can't proceed further into chapter 3. I'd recommend looking to the Microsoft SSAS tutorial instead of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm shocked
I am both shocked and surprised at how completely faulty this book is.I have the previous version of this book; Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step, and I don't remember it being this bad.Don't get me wrong, I know Reed Jacobson as I had met him at the SQL Server 2005 launch event, and I don't necessarily blame him for the poor standing.I do however blame Microsoft as there is no way they could have performed any sort of Technical Editorial on this book.If you do decide to buy it, watch out for the Writeback partitions exercise in Chapter 10.It blew up my Virtual Server.Twice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Guided "stepping"
I'm only on page 78, and already I can tell that I'm going to enjoy and learn from this book. Not being familiar with Mr. Halvorson's work, I was a little leary when I noticed that this book was published by Microsoft Press. Dreading page after page of nearly non-human jargon and wording, I was most pleasantly surprised when I began my journey through the easy-to-read pages. If you can follow a recipe, you can learn from this book. Heck, even if you can't follow a recipe, you can still learn, as long as you're willing to do the exercises. Being a beginner in the programming field, I can heartily recommend Microsoft's and Mr. Halvorson's version of VB 6.0 training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent from begginer to intermediate
My programing background was in C++, Pascal, and Delphi, so when I got a new job and had to learn VB 6.0 I scrambled to find a book that could teach me the fundamentals.I can honestly say that after reading this book in two weeks I learned VB 6.0.Great book for developers who are beggining or just want to refresh their knowlegh in VB 6.0, a must have.
