UPDATED AT THE END - ORIGINAL REVIEW LEFT UNTOUCHED
5-0 out of 5 stars Modern treatment of C++
This is an excellent textbook written by knowledgeable authors. Horstmann teaches at San Jose State University in California. He has in-depth knowledge of C++, having written the Safe STL library. He also writes for the Sun Core Java series of books.
4-0 out of 5 stars javaboy
Lots of examples, very easy to follow along.A big downside that I noticed is that there is no website for the book to find the necessary libraries for the examples.I now found that I can find them on the site of the previous book the author wrote. After wich I had to find more libraries wich were either missing or incomplete. This come down to skipping chapter 3 and subsequent programming exercises that require the knowledge gained from chapte 3. Very frustrading, but I hope that that the author will create the site soon, making this a 5/5 book.Great otherwise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great in-depth info for a very under documented topic
Jason & Stacy have done a great job digging into the details of site definitions. You rarely find this level of depth in available resources, including in the WSS/SPS SDK or MSDN. Wish I had this a long time ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book so far on the topic...
While there are other books that have been published in the past year on the topic of SharePoint and customizations and what not, I would have to say that this book brings all the pieces together, gives the explanations to UI developers, administrators and developers that they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Book on SharePoint
Even though it is not a big book in pages, it is an excellent book in content! The core of the book focuses on creating site definitions; with many excellent examples and useful tips. Other topics covered include template construction, definitions for Lists and customization of themes and alerts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
if you allready have some c# experience this books is the next step u need for jump into the network programming... the books compile the 99% on vs 2005 and the examples are clear, they left no doubt when you are reading, if you want to invest some money on learning this is one way you can do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I used a number of books as references for a server project in C#, including the "TCP/IP Sockets in C#" book referenced in another review, but that book is more geared toward academic use (though to his credit I emailed one of the authors of the book regarding multithreading issues that were not addressed in print and he was very responsive, so I support the purchase of that book to round out your sockets library as well). Blum's book provided far more practical advice relating to my project and was the one I consistently returned to for reference. I had an issue not addressed directly in the book, did a Google search on it and found the answer...by the book's author in an online discussion forum!
2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't go deep enough into the real issues
This book is a good introductory book to network programming in general. While it attempts to cover all the general topics that you can find in reference books like "TCP/IP Illustrated", it seriously lacks the breadth and depth of such reference books and falls short of tackling the real issues of Network Programming with the .Net frameowrk in C#.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Material, Not as Good Training Book
I was looking for a training book that would help me quickly understand ASP.NET 2.0 with VB.NET 2005 for my company's upcoming web application projects. While this book for the most part has helped provide me with the basic skills I need and does act as a good reference tool to refer back to while developing, I wish the training was as thorough as most Murach books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
One of the most thorough and useful beginner's guides to VS2005 that I've seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Training, Barely for Reference
This book is not sure who it is intended for. It states it is for Training and Reference. It is not a training book and as a refence book it leaves much to be desired. If you know anything about ASP.NET the first 300 pages will bore you (so will most of the rest of the book). Whether you know ASP.NET or not parts of the last 200 pages assume you are an expert and even states topics the author raises won't be covered since it is assumed you are already familar. Leaves you wondering who the book is really for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Purchase
I agree with most of the reviews on this page. Regardless of Microsoft's current/past practices (which have absolutely nothing to do with the credibility of THIS book), it gives a good background on security in many situations. The part I found most helpful were the 'How To's' sections. There are good real world examples that are straight to the point and easy to comprehend. I code in C# w/SQL Server and all examples in this book use that combination; PERFECT FIT!4-0 out of 5 stars Wow.MS is certainly an unusual source of security info...
However, this is overall a good book on the subject.5-0 out of 5 stars Good Prescriptive Guidance
The Patterns and Practices Series represents the bridge between known best practices and applications. Busy application developers are frequently tasked with building complex and secure system, and at the same time, are required to operate with limited resources and time. This series, and ASP.NET Security specifically, give good prescriptive guidance for a large number of common application scenarios. The how-to sections are exceeding valuable. Check out other books in this series and you will find lots of good guidance to jump start development on the MS platform. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wretched
The text and examples in this book are too bogged-down in Visual Studio-isms for it to be a good introductory programming text, but the material is also too basic for experienced programmers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great coursebook, but heavy for the beginner
Like a few others said, this book is very verbose at 1500 pages, but it's overkill for most people.I like it because it's got lots of coverage on many areas, but the examples are too big and too many and take from showing the meaty theory around each chapters objectives.I still give it 4 stars because others who have looked it over told me it's not too bad

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge over written mass of book
I've been reading technical books for 25 years and this book was recommended to me by someone else - what a let down. First, way too verbose on every subject. I have never seen a book with so much miscellaneous and distracting stuff crammed into one page. The book is 1500 pages of which half don't need to be there. This might work in a class room, but a huge mistake for individual learning. They call there code samples live code, but I call it filling the pages. It's better to explain concepts with simple examples first, then build on them, and this book fails miserably. Many times, only a 2-3 paragraphs explains something, then it goes on for 10 pages dissecting samples. Then briefly concludes before whisking to the next long sample. It's quite the jumble. Also, open any page in this book and you will see 20 bold highlighting of keywords that is very distracting. Also, the pages are thin and have a glare that I find annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Good Programming Book
This is one of the rare books, one of the few that I would actually recommend to anyone that is moving into C++ or needs a refresher on the ideas and methods behind programming in C++.You just can't go wrong buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching C++ using a strategy that works
The title of the book is an apt description of the approach taken by Eckel as he steps through the basic features of C++ and object-oriented programming. Rather than show how programs are written in C++, he presents the sequence of ideas that led to the structures and some of the ways they are implemented. This approach is very similar to the one I adopted after my first few years of teaching C++.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and complete
This is the best C++ book that I own. There are some concepts in C++ I never fully understood until I read this book. The author covers important details regarding the compiler. He also uses an effective technique to decribe complex C++ concepts by solving a problem in both C and C++. Understanding C++ at this level will help readers troubleshoot/understand their problems more effectively. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful info but must wade through chatty kathy style
I need to learn Exchange Fast. Too many paragraphs seem to open or be sprinkled with dialog that doesn't pass on substantive information. For instance, "If you are like me, you are saying to yourself...'self..."or "One of the most discouraging things is for a user to call up and say they can't reach domain xyz." Multiply this by 300 and 30% of the book is fluff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning and Reference Book!
This is a great book for learning the guts of Exchange 2003.Too many of the books of today are designed to help you pass a test and learn items related to the test.Well, this is not that book, fortunately. However, the knowledge in the book will help significantly when it comes test time.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too general to be as helpful as could be possible
I agree with another reviewer that there is not enough of how to do the tasks in question. There is a great deal of 'skimming' subjects without explanation leaving the reader to find out from other sources. For example, in Chapter 1, there are numererous mentions of HTTP/DAV and DAVEx (referring to the davex (DLL that handles communications between the Exchange back-end server and IIS) but there is no explanation as to what it does or how it works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Quick Introduction
This book makes for a well-written and relevant introduction for a beginner to DTS, which is what I was when I picked it up.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Good but DTS is still full of bugs
The book is a good way for learning DTS.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too many "step by step"
I found the beggning chapters are good, but in the latter half, the number of steps became so many that it's painful to follow them. Chapter 7 has 70 pages of step-by-step and I found I am like a robot just going through the steps. (Well, I didn't do it until the end, I am not a robot).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious but left me wanting...
I had a mixed reaction to this book. It's obvious that Mr. MacDonald is quite knowledgeable, but I think this book chews off a bit more than it can swallow. It was all there, but I don't know if a beginner would have the patience to read this book cover to cover. As a "Beginning ASP.NET" book it has a very cursory overview of programming basics, object oriented programming, .NET Framework including the Basic Class Library (BCL formerly the FCL) and the CLR. There's an introduction to Visual Studio 2005 and C#.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there
I have read many books on ASP.NET, by far this book is the most well organized, user friendly book that will teach you ASP.NET
5-0 out of 5 stars So far, so great.
While I have only read around 200 of the 1000 pages in this book, I must say it is everything I expected and more.I would suggest having a general understanding of the syntax of Java or C/C++ before reading, but if you have no programming experience at all you could probably work through the initial learning curve.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, concise algorithm book ruined by comment
compare to most algorithm/data structure books out there, this book is not as complete as those, but it's much easier to read, and diagrams in this book is well drawn and much eaiser to follow. Why would I only give it 3 stars? One thing really ruined this book - obviously the publisher/editor/author try to increase the total page number by putting ridiculously big comment block in sample code(single line comments takes about 5 lines, all surrounded by '*' and spaces) This made the sample code difficult to read, imagine a 5 line function has to be printed in 2 or 3 pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but HORRIBLE CODING STYLE!!!
The book contents is good, the algorithms presented are more or less well explained and the implementeations themselves are not bad (but could be better).
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money
To be fair and honest, I have not read this entire book and that is because I've read far better ones.If you are interested in this topic (and if you're a programmer or computer scientist, you should be), look to Robert Sedgewick's excellent "Algorithms in C" in two volumes, or "Mastering Algoritms" by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein. While the algorithms in Cormen, etc.'s book are not in C, they are in a pseudo language that easy to convert to C.I'm really, really glad I looked this book over before flushing my (limited) money away. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Crunch Time
When you are ready to take the bold step into algorithms, this book is a great second step. I say second step because I think it helps if you read "teach yourself algorithms in 21 days" before this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Good documentation of basic data structures
I purchased this book to refresh my memory on data structures with templates. It is well written in most spots and provides excellent examples. I would recommend this book to any intermediate c++ programmer who wishes to learn/relearn advanced data structures such as Linked Lists,Hash,QuickSort,etc....

4-0 out of 5 stars C++ Algorithms
This book is full of great information on C++ algorithms. There are many excellent examples, and the author presents the gammit as far as topics. They really open up your mind to possibilities. The reading at times is rough going, though (very dry).Sample code or examples to download may be found at the publisher's website instead of the one printed in the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good-Probably a Caveat for all technical books--See Below
This book is good; I'm a definate beginner although I've read other books on the subject and have played around with vb .net. Really never broke down and really studied to learn. Decided I should; in most technical books I very much doubt that beginners will notice errors unless they are obvious. It was not until chapter 5 that I noticed one. Involved renaming the checkboxes 2-7 if I remember correctly which are in groupbox1. In the book it said groupbox2 which is where the radiobuttons are at. This popped out as a definate error; went online to: (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to get me to write this review!
I've never written in a review for a book here before. After reading this book I felt compelled to do just that. I've read more books than I can recall about learning programs. From Access to Photoshop and all things in between. While I learn a lot from these books without fail I hit areas that are just glossed over and I'm left thinking "Okay, but what about ____?"

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for a beginner
I am currently taking a beginning C++ class, this book is very hard to follow. I often use other books for a clear understanding. File Input/Output covers just three pages and does not give you an example to work with. You get a skeleton outline of one. It would have been nice to have a working example of one.
1-0 out of 5 stars AN INTERMEDIATE LEVEL BOOK
It took too long to start writing programs. It took until page 75. After that it had a nice steady pace of programming. This seems more like an INTERMEDIATE LEVEL PROGRAMMING BOOK rather than an INTRODUCTORY BOOK. Make sure you know your ALGEBRA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and very easy to read.
This book is well written, and the author does a good job at starting at the beginning phases of learning C++ and moving to advanced topics.I would recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to learn C++.Some of the reviewers are really critical of this book, and there is no reason for it.I have studied C++ for years, I just wish I would have found this book sooner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The first book to buy if you want to learn C
The book has a great structure, there is 21 chapters/days total about C and an extra 7 chapters about other languages basic beyond C; Java, C#, and C++. There are however many defects to this book, there are many typos that I was able to spot, and there are no answers to some of the questions. I really enjoyed doing the Bug Busters section at the end of the chapters and would like to see more in the next editions of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for an intro book
Sams C++ in 21 Days is OK at best but lacks depth on covered subjects & does not cover some at all.Linked lists & binary trees were covered in three paragraphs and a small picture.Good for beginning to learn C++ but that where it stops.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Want to Learn C, Look No Further
Master programmers may be better off buying something like the C books by Dennis Ritchie or Guy Steele, but if you're a beginning programmer who wants to learn C as your first or second programming language, this would be a great book to learn from. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply badly designed for exams
I believe that the writers made some bad choices when they first began to write this book. First of all, unlike most other certification books the exam goals are not together in one section. Instead there are whole chapters for queries, indexes, views, etc with all of the information about each topic in that chapter. So if you wanted to read about 'query optimization' you would have to read the sections within that chapter about query optimation from the queries chapter, from the index chapter, some from the views chapter, etc. So if you want to review a specific topic that you are not as good at you will be doing a lot of page flipping.
4-0 out of 5 stars This Won't Prepare You For 70-229 But a Good Starting Point.
This book is a very easy read, explains concepts clearly, but lacks the kind of detail necessary for passing the 70-229 exam, especially if you are taking this as an elective on the developer track. It will get you through most of what you need to know at 10,000 feet, but it will not take you to a passing
