5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome ! Awesome ! book .
This is a really awesome book. In my opinion, nobody to date has explained pointers better than Mr. Daconta. By the time I finished reading the book and doing the exercises, I was really thinking out "pointers" and how they were being represented inside the machine, which is what makes this book great.
4-0 out of 5 stars Remove thy veil and immerse yourself in the land of pointers
Pointers are by far the most important, and most difficult aspects of C/C++. Most books, however, gloss over the subject and leave the reader desiring more. Daconta understood this and addressed many of the questions in this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanations covered..which are hard to find...
Since I am a programmer and mainly built applications using visual basic, I always had an urge to master c++ due to the power of this language, but pointers were the only hurdle for me to overcome this goal. I always had bad times understanding MFC offered classes and the way whole infrastructure work, coz they play with pointers alot..and after all learning C++ and coding in c++ is not difficult without pointers but the fact is, if someone really wanna code in C++ they better do it efficiently other wise no need to switch, you should remain on ur currently practice language..This book not only taught me what pointers are but really made my mind think and work like a compiler..I really appreciate the author Micheal C Daconta and his team of putting such a masterpiece into existance, with out this book I simply believe one cannot solve the mystery of pointers coz no other stuff is available that is comparable to this book..Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book to learn Neural Networks
As an undergraduate Math and Computing student, when I took up a high-level course in Neural Networks as an open elective, the only book my instructor recommended was Neural Networks by Simon Haykin. I got that book, and was soon put off by the mathematical rigour it had.
4-0 out of 5 stars best for beginnner
I found it is best for beginner with best suited examples. It teaches as if teacher is with you and the way examples seleted is the best. After completion of this book you feel as if expert in subjet with true fundamental knowledge in ANN programming. Best book to start with ANN Programming

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful
I bought this book ages ago without any knowledge of neural nets and used the book and accompanying neutral.exe executable to conduct a research study.I am not a C/C++ programmer so I cannot speak to the clarity or quality of the code but I did carefully read the text of the book and I found it very helpful in understanding neural nets and applying them.(Readers might complement this book with a good, practical social sciences text on applying regression... for example, Masters and the AI community seemed to have a poor grasp of the phenomenon of "shrinkage" in noisy environments.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Exceptional and effective
I prefer C++ gotchas to the C++ exceptional and effective series. Why? Because this book is much simpler. If you're a Hacker (?) I supouse you won't like this book, don't goes through the details ofExceptional and so on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of little glimpses behind the scenes
This book works by living up to its title and showing distinct problem areas with C++, highlighting the wary and unwary, experienced and inexperienced, alike. One of our team brought this in, and told us he'd learned a lot, and thought that we senior members would also benefit. Having scoffed at him, we each had to eat our words after reading.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very accessible
I'm a big fan of books that make the topic(s) accessible to readers. This book does a good job of that. Other similar books (like the Scott Meyers' series) do a good job, but are geared towared (in most cases) seasoned C++ guys. This book is accessible to beginners, which is a good thing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Get Subcription to Siggraph Instead
Except for the chapters on raster algorithms, this book is just an extended bibliography. It has no material on texturing, for example, just a reference to the original paper on it. The math isn't that mature either, and the chapter on Perspective Projections is a pedagogical atrocity. Instead of buying this book, just go to your local univ. library and xerox the bibliography; then, lookup the articles on topics you're interested in.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
This book is a great book for general knowledge but all of the chapters that deal with talking about hardware is badly outdated. I got this book mostly for algorithms. I got much more then what I expected but most of everything I needed was there. Its a very good book for learning about line drawing, and polygon rasteration algorithms. Don't expect anything up to date like shaders though.

4-0 out of 5 stars All-time classic

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless

4-0 out of 5 stars The introduction that you have been waiting for.
If you've been programming in C++ over the last few years, you've probably heard of the Boost set of libraries. These libraries extend and augment the C++ standard library based on years of real-world experience. Now that some of the Boost libraries have been accepted into the Technical Report 1 for inclusion in the C++ standard, no one can afford to ignore them any longer.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you're not using Boost, you're not getting the most out of C++.
All professional C++ programmers should become familiar with this freely available source of high quality, peer reviewed C++ code.Boost is a collection of libraries that are designed to complement the C++ Standard Library and provide very useful solutions to difficult program design tasks. This book is a very good introduction to Boost. There is an introductory chapter that gives a brief description of each Boost library (almost 60 of them as of version 1.32).Seven of these libraries have been accepted for the upcoming C++ Standard Library Technical Report which means that they will probably become part of the next version of the C++ standard. The remainder of the book gives a more in-depth tutorial introduction of a good sampling of 12 Boost libraries. This material complements the documentation on the Boost.org web site.It provides clear examples that illustrate the use and usefulness of each library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Introduction to Exchange
As an MCSE, I gave this book 4 stars for two reasons: the CD contains a 120 day trial version of Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition, and the text provides a good overview of Exchange 2003 features suitable for MCSE test prep. I did not rate this book with 5 stars because it is presented as an "Administrator's Companion," which I felt was stretching it a bit. As a previous reviewer has stated, there are better alternatives for strictly "desk reference companions" to Exchange; however, I was pleasantly surprised by how readable the book was, given that it is a Microsoft Press publication.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time for an Exchange Administrator
If you are an Exchange Administrator who wants to upgrade his support skills to Exchange 2003 this book is too basic.Case in point, Chapter 10 Monitoring Exchange Server 2003."... Windows Server 2003 records many events in its own event logs."... "Windows maintains three distinct logs" (Application, Security, and System) "You will encounter five types of events in the three logs, and a unique icon identifies each event type so that you can easily disntiguish between the information entries and the error entries"
1-0 out of 5 stars This book has many faults
After reading this book to find some information with Active Directory Connectors, I found errors that the author should have known better. For example, the book states that the Exchange ADC can only be installed on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller.... this is completely false.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Place to Start
Great book, and it assumes pretty much no programming knowledge; starts with the basics (variables, types, numering and so on) and moves, gradually and methodically, into the thornier aspects of the language.Takes its time, too -- perhaps to a fault; if you're a programmer with some experience (as I am), you might find it a little too slow, but then again, C's a rather unforgiving language, and Prata knows this well enough to spend ample amounts of time explaining the details and subtleties of the language's behavior that sometimes take years to learn on one's own.Lots and lots of problems and exercises, too, and highly readable at that.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for solid foundation
If you want to learn C programming and new to it this is the book to start with. It is an excellent book for beginners. It starts from basics to intermediate levels and can serve an excellent reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best programming book i have seen

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful VBScript reference
This is not intended for beginners in scripting or VBScript in particular. But for anyone with even moderate programming or scripting, this may be all you'll need to become familiar with VBScript.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
This is not the book to learn the basics of VBScript, but it's exactly what I needed; a good reference book. I got tired of trying to find syntax of commands and functions online. Now I have it at my fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars NUTSHELL
I don't have this book, I've never read it.But the negative reviews for it are out of line.People have reviewed it claiming it isn't for the beginner or for learning VB Script.NO KIDDING!!It is called NUTSHELL for a reason. It is a reference book, NOT a learning book.Don't give bad reviews for a book because you were too stupid to realize you bought the wrong book. That's just as bad as buying a Java book and complaining that it doesn't have any Javascipt examples in it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very handy
this comes in very handy if you are developing with vb/vba on a daily basis. much quicker than using the mostly confusing and badly organized MSDN online references...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best learning tool for beginners
It's hard to believe that this book was originally published in 1998.I can't think of any VB programmer I've met that did not have one of these on their desk. This book is meant to be used like a dictionary for VB and VBA.The format is brilliant and the concepts in it are as valid today as they were in 1998.
4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great
Well, although there are still many zealous VB 6.0 coders out there, we all know the former language has been superseded by VB.NET, which is basically completely unrelated whatsoever to VB 6.0.

1-0 out of 5 stars Promptly returned ...
In agreement with an earlier reviewer who also gave this book 1-star rating, it took me about 10 minutes of going through this relatively thin book to realize that its contents was not substantive (at all). Too much hand-waving, and not nearly enough meat. And there's barely any C or C++ code in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am curious for the meaning of "advanced users" and what they would enjoy on a "advanced book" and why they despise this book for its basic content, And perhaps, they are after a title like "do my work". I guess much of the material here is very important to embedded developers, being experienced or not. For ex, start up code, the memory initializations and the excellent introduction to a RTOS. I am an Electrical Engineer, always writting embedded application code ( mostly dealing with API calls when it comes to low level ) and I was looking for clarification of several issues and the book did it well. Have a manual for your processor, your compiler and it will be all that you will need. Tips for embedded applications might be easily found on application notes ( be it ARM based processors or AVRs or Freescales ). This book is about writting the software not about the applications them selves.

2-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated
"But keep in mind, it is extremely superficial. In other words, it's a great introduction for people who have no idea whatsoever what embedded development involves." This is a quote from a reviewer that gave it 5 stars. I agree with this reviewer comments but don't buy a book you will outgrow before you finish reading it!For now, I still recommend the David E. Simon book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible explanations
This book is very poor for teaching students new languages and I would never recomend it to fellow teachers. I had more problems with students trying to do problems from the book than any other. The author provides a nice example problem in each lesson, however she does not explain the purpose of any of her steps. Basically, she says copy this code and it will work. When the students went to do the exercises in my online class they had no idea becasue her one limited example did not give then enough practice or explanation of the concepts. The actual content of the book is not bad, just never use the book for an online class. The author needs to revise and have a number of different examples as opposed to just one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Tutorials but bad for reference
I was forced to buy this book for my App Dev course. Im a begginner so im happy that there are plenty of easy to follow tutorials but im not so happy that there is no reference section. The index is really really really poor. You would think that because of the thousands of instructions in VB that half the book would be an easy to find reference. But no!..Diane makes you trudge through the tutorials step by step slowly building your knowledge. Its frustrating! One plus about this book is the included version of VB.net on 6 cds. I guess i saved money in that respect. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Aid in programming Active Directory
This is one book that you need if you are writing code for Active Directory. The author understands what issues developers face and what details are important when implementing solutions. It is not a reindexing of manufacturer's manual. You can take code out of this book and use it with understanding.
5-0 out of 5 stars definitive guide to .Net AD programming
If you're looking to write AD or ADAM code in .Net, this is the book to get. Joe and Ryan do a great job of covering this topic, balancing a light writing style with deep coverage of the material and practical advice about writing directory-enabled code in real-world environments. For me, the ideal technical reference is one that I can read cover-to-cover as well as jump to a particular topic as-need to get immediate help. This book serves both those needs extremely well; easily one of the best programming references I've read in a while and literally the only decent source for practical System.DirectoryServices advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Directory resource
The .NET Developer's Guide to Directory Services Programming provides valuable insight in how to properly write .NET applications that use Active Directory or ADAM. It covers pretty much everything you need to know, to be effective in programming against a Directory Service using both .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0.

I would disagree with many people on this book due to the fact that this book is very helpful on using codes and debugging tools although its a definition guide on computer programming inwindows 2000it can teach you a lot of details on programming it is more like a beginners guide using many symbols and differnt codes this book is more of a book for people wanting to learn how to write files store files also deals with rewritting web pages or possibley a guide on how to develop folders spreadsheets graphs and many othe features i would say this book is really great for anyone wanting to learn c programming in windows environment as well as in the assembly language or DOS enviroment; although this bookdoes not teach you assembly language programming it is a way to start learning assembly language programming1

I would agree with the review that states the authors were working side-by-side with the office development team as this book was written. However, I would disagree that such close input was entirely helpful. While the information contained in this book is a nice introduction to how things are "supposed" to work, as with so much of Microsoft's software, things never quite work the way they were designed, unless of course, you're doing exactly what the folks at Microsoft assumed you would do.Not only do some examples in this book fail to work, most examples are simple and obvious, the kind of thing a person might generate from looking at Microsoft's help information.Often they illustrate how the designers assumed their software would work. They often fail to demonstrate what the software can do--or much more important--how to get around the artificial limitations set by Microsoft. Some simple examples involve such basic building blocks as dialog boxes and menus (commandbars in Micro-speak).Some built-in dialog boxes have over a dozen arguments, but try finding out what those arguments do from either this book or from Microsoft's help information. As for the commandbars, even the examples from the book fail to work.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Office-wide book
It's very hard to find a book on VBA that isn't based in one application, and doesn't begin at the 'Hello World' level. This book does neither. Instead it provides a good introduction to the object models of the Office applications, and includes well-written code examples. The breadth of content is impressive--from shared Office components to class modules. What a pity it's out of print! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Book with Little Competition
MDX Solutions is an essential reference book for anyone using Analysis Services 2005. No other book covers the subject as thoroughly as this one. However, it remains only a reference book. It is thick, extremely dense, and not a tutorial that you can read cover to cover. Believe me; I've tried, more than once in fact.
5-0 out of 5 stars The [MDX] Bible just got better
The first edition of MDX Solutions is without a doubt the MDX bible. My copy goes with me wherever I may encounter any MDX-writing requirements. It is by far the most tattered, thumbed-through textbook I own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied
I bought this new book which I got it for $4 less than any other place including internet and book stores. I received the book on time and as I expected. Started reading and enjoying it...

4-0 out of 5 stars Use this book along with additional resources
The book is well structured to cover the exam topics. It does, however, omit certain details in some topics which would be unclear from just the book alone if I didn't already know them or didn't find some better explanations elsewhere online. You'll need some additional resource, including .NET class library online reference and online tutorials to fully understand certain topics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent
I've not finished reading this book yet, nor have I completed all exercises. Already having a fair bit of experience with .NET and ASP.NET I can see that this book covers only the basics, though it seems to cover them quite well.I have, however, found a few code errors in the examples, which I feel detracts a fair bit from the overall quality of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Second VB Book
I have been through many VB books including expensive college texts.I immediately found this to be the best one.I picked it up at a Borders (oops...) because I was sick of ordering books online and not liking them when I finally got them in the mail. After I read the first chapter in the book store, I didn't want to wait to get started so I paid the $40.
1-0 out of 5 stars Jesse Liberty Fails to Update the Errata
After spending many hours trying to figure why the sample code didn't work, I found the answer buried on Jesse Liberty's message board.A fellow reader points out an error on Jan 21 and as of June 26 Jesse has yet to update his errata. Most tech books have a decent size errata and that is to be expected, but for an author to fail in his responsibility at the cost of many collective hours by his readers is extremely inconsiderate. This book is in my trash can at the moment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a complete transition to VB.Net
I absolutely love Jesse's books and articles. However, this book does not have a page dedicated to ADO.Net nor does Jesse talk about the debugging methods of VS 2005.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best VBA book I've encountered!
Let me start by saying that I've purchased my fair share of VBA books the past few years and this is the best one - HANDS DOWN. It is the most organized, most thurough, most complete. There are greate USABLE/PRACTICAL examples and ideas that I've gone hunting for in my other books.... this book had it. Complete with great error handling philosophies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still quite relevant for Sybase developers
Although there aren't too many Sybase databases anymore, quite a few firms (esp. in Finance) have them and if you find yourself working with Sybase I strongly recommend this book. It's been a great. The sections on Error handling (Ch.9), transactions and locking (Ch.11) and built-in Functions (Ch.12) have been invaluable over the years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for T-SQL information
I purchased my copy back in 1999 and it is one of my favorite SQL books.I find the information very accurate and relevant to the MS SQL versions (6.5 & 7.0) printed on the cover of the book.I think it was the best SQL book for many years.Since 1999, many books for newer versions of database servers have been published.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book with easy-to-find answers to your questions
Judging from the other reviews here, people either love this book or they hate it.I love it.This book has proved invaluable to me over the years, and I still reference it on occassion.
