A Good Start
This manuel was an excellent start for some of us "dummies" out there.Though I have signed up for a Project Class to be taken in person, this book as definately helped me to get by with a little help from the Dummy Writers.

Great place to start
Facing the new year with numerous relatively small projects that I felt were out of control, I resolved to take action. I believed that my planning tasks were unlikely to tax the abilities of Project 2003, and was not really interested in knowing every detail of the software. I picked up this book, and was able to read the sections of interest--about 75% of the content--on a flight from Atlanta to San Jose. I was not disappointed. By the evening of January 10, my three most pressing projects were organized, resources were assigned, and realistic finish dates had been determined. The book gave me the information I needed to get results without false starts. While the attempts at folksy humor can be a tad annoying, the prose is generally clear and understandable. I doubt this is the book for you if you are managing a major project with dozens of people. However, if your projects are jobs like press releases, webinars, and minor software releases, you will likely be well served by it. ... Read more

I Recommend The New Game Maker Book To Everyone In Even Slight Interest
"The Game Maker's Apprentice" was the greatest book I've ever read. Not Kidding. I read the entire book in 2 and 1/2 days. I even skipped dinner the first day. The Game Maker's Apprentice comes with a CD-rom including all of the resources and finished games mentioned in the book and games that show step-by-step how to program it. I recommend it to ANYONE who is interested in the Computer Gaming or Video Gaming field. Not only does the book teach you how to program 9 great games and show you how all of the steps of game creation can be fun, but it also has 3 chapters specifically based on extending your games with tips by professionals.

Excellent resource for learning game oriented programming.
This book is an excellent resource for learning the fundamentals of game programming and the logic necessary to be successful at it. The book is well written, easy to follow and understand. The tutorials are fun and the games you create, while relatively simple, are quite enjoyable. The 3 or so chapters on game development are also sound and offer some excellent insight into making a good game. The Game Maker software included with the book, with it's built in programming language, is surprisingly powerful and intuitive. Additionally, Game Maker has a very strong on-line presence and has an extremely active forum for asking questions that aren't covered, or are beyond the scope of the book. (And it's all free too!!)
Must have book for Game Maker 6.1 software
Easy to follow color book for beginners, you make a game in no timeand come with cd-rom with all the resources to built the games.

The Pragmatic RUP Introduction
There is plenty of theory written about RUP, but how it should be applied to your role or your project is often misunderstood.
You need this book if you're doing RUP
This book does a great job of showing steps of practical application of the RUP.The book may seem repetitive on a few points, but I feel the points bear repeating.This book has been invaluable in helping cut through the misinformation thrown around by some who have gotten the executive summary of RUP and know just enough to be dangerous. I recently completed a seven-part online course on the RUP that was based on this book.The book did a far better job of making the RUP understandable.

The best way to understand RUP
I teach RUP classes in Brazil and the most difficult thing for the students is to understand the core practices of RUP(what I like to call Agile RUP) without getting swallowed by all the details of the hundreds activities, artifacts, roles, guidelines, etc.

Good General Reference
As the title, and most of the reviews (save Mr. Strauchs') suggest, this is the manual that doesn't exist in print. It's a nice alternative to the Help menu as it's written in a personable style that offers more direct and real-world applications for the basics of FileMaker.
Thorough, complete, yet easy to understand; well-done tutorials
Concur with all the other reviewers that this is THE best, most complete, yet easy-to-follow guide to FileMaker Pro [FMP]. The authors really have gone out of their way in using plain words to describe arcane concepts, and the illustrations are well executed. Although there are the usual typos and occasional ambiguous/misleading statements, there is a continuously updated website with 'Errata' and sample completed tutorial exercises. [If these were included on a CD with the book, this book would warrant a super-nova rating!]
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer that has been working with FileMaker for a while? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoff Coffey and Susan Prosser, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that explores each feature in depth, offers shortcuts and workarounds, and explains the ramifications of options that a FileMaker Pro manual doesn't even mention.

Fantastic BI Book
I loved this book. The way its structured is brilliant, you caneasily start reading this book from any chapter and not get confused. Each chapter gives you a detailed analysis on whats required and any pitfalls you may face during the specific phase of your implementation!

The new way to develop J2EE enterprise applications.
The latest and greatest about designing and building J2EE based enterprise applications is all within this book. The Spring Framework is a perfect compliment to strong object oriented design principles and techniques that should be leveraged for any J2EE solution. This book discusses both the strengths and weaknesses to the old EJB framework and talks about why Spring Framework is a good alternative.

Excellent intro and tutorial
This book covers most of the major topics in Spring. I used it to get started with Spring and to teach others. I like the comparisons they draw between Spring and J2EE. The book does a great job of introducing IoC an then moves into more complex/interesting topics.
Sloppy by and large
Some chapters (the basic Spring) are ok (even good.) Many advanced topics are covered in a sloppy manner. Further the editing is generally bad. I must say that I have read a finely edited book by Manning, namely Hibernate In Action. ... Read more

Unique is not best, but best in it's class
This is not the best hands-on, how-to book about designing your ownUnreal Tournament mod but it is the only book available. Thus, like the first Gutenberg printing press, it's the best in it's class! In the tutorials the authors assume that you already know as much about the Unreal Editor as they do. If you do not know the in's and out's and idiotsyncrasies of the Unreal Editor(which is why I bought the book in the first place) you will learn new definitions of patience during the first 23 chapters. In the end you will thank the authors for their altruism and capatalistic guile without which this knowledge would not be publicly available. Thank G-d and the great Satan for freedom of information! Thank America for the freedom to say this!

Great Book!
I was brand new to all aspects of game design, and I had no idea where to start.So I opened up the book preview in the Unreal Tournament folder and saw this book.I went up to borders and bought it a week later.I've had this book for almost 3 weeks now, and Holy Crap!From the start, it explains the history of the Unreal engine and gives you a close up look of all the tools used.It has in-depth tutorials that make designing your first map a breeze.The CD contained in the book also has the May 5 Personal Learning Edition on it.In fact, the CD is my only complaint.This book expects you to use the CD for every texture and static mesh used.Overall, the book is a must buy for any begginner.

Unreal Mapping.
This book is the best and only one book published in Unreal technology nobody beat this tutorial book for mapping in Unreal tournament 2004 I recommend this thick book to anyone wanting to master the Unreal editor.

Caution, Maestro at Work
Ray Kurzweil is utterly relentless, merciless, and authoritative as he hammers home his vision of the future.He doesn't just make this stuff up, but opens his book with about fifty graphs depicting the exponential trends in current technology.Graphs depict the increase in computer power, its reduction in cost, the nanotechnological patents applied for, the size of chips, and so on. Dr. Kurzweil doesn't so much indicate trends, as prove that they are inevitable.
Theoretical Science Masterpiece
Kurzwell's vision isn't perfect.But part of the point of this book is that no one single person will comprise the evolutionary singularity, it will take every single part of humanity to plug into our world for that to happen.He's doing a relatively noble thing, standing on the edge of reality, and sending out a jolting vision of the future that is one of a kind.There's no need to worship Kurzwell, it's simply that people ought to pay attention to this theoretical science masterpiece and heed it's alarming beautiful call to arms against pessimism and backward oriented thought.Awesome. ... Terrible
I do not understand why this book is rated so highly.
Most appropriate for CS students
As a teacher of the subject, I have had the chance to evaluate numerous books on the theory of computation.Of all the available texts, I think this one is the most appropriate for CS students.In the past I taught out of Dexter Kozen's book, which is incredibly elegant, but had some resistance from the students.Thinking it over I decided that Kozen's text, although beautiful, may be better suited to students pursuing a degree in pure math.Sipser's book, on the other hand, is more gentle.I find that Sipser demands far less mathematical maturity from his readers, and thus allows the difficulty to be shifted from excessive formalism to the inherent challenges present in the material.In addition, following Sipser's treatment, I was able to cover finite state machines and pushdown automata in far less time, thus allowing me to concentrate on computability and beyond.The book really shines in its treatment of computability theory, eloquently directing attention to some of the most beautiful aspects.
Excellent accessible textbook on the theory of computation
The theory of computation is the branch of computer science that deals with whether and how efficiently problems can be solved on a computer. The field is divided into two major branches: computability theory and complexity theory, but both branches deal with formal models of computation, and both of these subjects are dealt with in this book. This is an important subject because no matter what leaps forward computers make, something that is proved undecidable and not computable will always be so, thus the theory behind this subject is very important.

great info - terrible editing
This book came so highly recommended it seemed like a sure thing. And in fact, it has a wealth of info on use cases; I can certainly see it being a valuable reference for someone who is already an expert with use cases. For those with no previous exposure, however, it is a tiresome morass to wade through; so cluttered and muddled that finding the underlying meaning becomes a real challenge. This book could have been edited to 2/3rds the size, and been a far better book because of it. Was the editing staff on vacation?

This is the best book i have read on use case modeling. Pitfalls are covered in great detail. The book is well structured. The only negative thing i can think off, if I have to state one, is that the author sometimesgives better definitions of terms in places where you would not expect to find them. One of the first books to go deeper in to rootkits of its kind.Not many books out there to give a understanding to IAT, SSDT, hooks, trampoline functions, and its relationship to rootkits.
Not a book for Kernel Driver Developer
This book tells me what RootKit really means. One useful thing I got from this book was that in Windows Kernel even simple code can be used against security. And that's it. Most techniques in this book are primitive to kernel developers. I don't recommend this book to serious kernel driver developers. "Windows Internals" and OSR Online should be the way to go. ... detailed advice about designing
Clements shows how to use various notations to document your software design. Of these, perhaps UML is now the most common. The advice in the text can be used to first design your code, before programming. Certainly, you should somehow have a design laid out first. You do, don't you?
The best to date
Software architecture really is unlike any other aspect of its design. The architecture has deeper meaning and larger scale than any other aspect, and can't be discussed in the same ways. Quite skimpy

Poorly written
Principles of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets contains a great deal of information regarding economics in the United States. As a student, I find it to be poorly written. The authors/editors make constant reference throughout the text to other sections of the text. For example, we will discuss this in depth in chapter seven, but for now, lets reflect our continued study from chapter two and three. By doing so, we will be better prepared to read chapter eleven when we get to it. If the authors / editors left out the references and just left the actual information needed to learn the material, the student would be able to follow the material and perhaps understand the topic better. I am strongly encouraging our economics department to seek another text for future semesters. ... Read more

great way to learn SAS
This package, software and booklet, provides a great and affordable tool for leaning SAS.Unlike most educationally priced software, SAS LE does not require you to be a student in a degree granting program, and/or prove it with a student ID.Personally I am very impressed by the fact that SAS recognizes that "official" students are not the only ones trying to learn on a budget.The software is limited in that you can only display and process the first 1000 rows of your dataset, however this will be sufficient for most of the intended audience for this product, who are simply interested in learning how to use SAS.Another drawback is that the software expires, and will apparently not operate after December 1, 2008, so the value of the product diminishes with time before you buy it.The enclosed booklet is helpful, but not very in-depth, and you will probably want to buy the little SAS book or some other resource to get the most out of this product.You can see what procedures the software is capable of at support.sas.com/le, and there are some links to additional resources there too.For those who used the first edition of this software, you will probably be pleased to know that the annoying cartoon genie help character is gone, which makes the interface look a lot more professional if nothing else.Overall this is a great educational tool for learning SAS, and I highly recommend it.

SAS Learning Edition 2.0 (SAS/EG 2.0 & SAS 8.2)
The SAS Institute has finally released a limited (record limit and expiration date) version that is affordable to anyone.
Underwhelming
Make no mistake about it, SAS is a great product. But this CD and manual leave alot to be desired. The SAS webpage made it sound like this SAS|LE 2.0 CD would be robust, but with limitations to the amount of records you can use (to prevent it from being used instead of the real product). That is what I wanted: an app that taught me many of the features from SAS|base, SAS|stat and SAS|graph. It turns out SAS Learning Edition is a very stripped down SAS|base. The only thing it teaches is where to find the menus on the User Interface. The few simple descriptive statistics that you can put together are done just as easily in Excel or in free spreadsheet packages.

Poor at best
I agree with J.Boot's review - it is obvious that another reviewer on this page is completely biased. Maybe it was their way of getting 'brownie points' for a better grade. ;)

The other review of this book is obviously biased, since he studied under the author. This book is dry, poorly formatted, and has terrible illustrations/tables/figures.

i love GHH
i have read tonnes of books on this subject.starting from secrets of a super hacker by knightmare(published way back in 94, trust me dat was a great read n even 2day i find myself glued to da back as the first time i read it.now coming back 2 gray hat hacking.this is wat i would like 2 call the hacking reference book for the next generation.every one concerned about security should consider picking up this book.u might as well save some money n picking up more knowledge than any of the hacking exposed books in the market.no this book is not for button clicking script kiddies who play around wid trojans n claim to be hackers or web defacers(lamers).if u belong to da breed of script kiddies pick up this disgustin book by ankit fadia (oh by the way ive reviewed it).i wouuld liek to congradulate the authors for the outstanding work put into this book.howeever it would be great to see expanded materials on various topics and a little more detail in tool description.its not bad but it could still be better.so as i said before get dis book u wont regret it.so kiddies grow up keep those hacking exposed n ankit fadias books apart throw em in da firplace burn em do anythin .but go get dis one
Covers more than the typical hacking book
"Gray Hat Hacking - The Ethical Hacker's Handbook" is not your normal hacking book.This book should not be lumped in with the "Hacking Exposed" series nor the likes of "Counter Hack".What differentiates Gray Hat Hacking (GHH) from other books is the amount of code the book offers.This book is not for script kiddies, but instead shows how to advance to the next level of hacking (and, more importantly, prevention) by devoting over 100 pages to developing programming skills for both Linux and Window exploits.I had not encountered a book that dedicated this much space to scripting.
Great buy for every IT dept.
I bought this book from a store in D.C, and read it on my way back to India. I was impressed. Never found any book that deals with computer security and software vulnerabilities written so well. The reason I like this book is than others is because it does not only give you information that can help you in assessing your network security, but also gives you a basic introduction to the laws and legal technicalities. The contents of this book cover most of computer/network security related areas including technical implementation, planning, and defense. Therefore, it is not only for system engineers, but also for people managing IT departments.

Great reference for webmasters or small business owners
If you rate a computer book on how well it succeeds at being difficult and obscure, you won't like this one.It skips the geek pretensions and just delivers useful information, in a way that is accessable to small business owners and webmasters.The screenshots may not appeal to everyone, but I found them incredibly useful because they allow me to quickly find the screen I'm working on.
