1-0 out of 5 stars Needs more examples!
I think this guy has a book about how the inmates are running the asylum...well this book suffers from what happens when the subject matter experts (SME) are allowed to write books.BORING!!!SME's always seem to forget to include compelling examples.Yes there are little screen shots, but IMO in order for a book to be compelling that has to do with design...it needs to show LOTS of examples of good design. The bulk of the book should be about breaking down those designs.I need to hear why a specific design is effective.Take a hint from Steve Krugs book "Don't Make me Think".That book is extremely effective without inundating the reader with jargon.Lots of examples withmeaningful visual breakdowns.Afterall...isnt UI design a VISUAL communication form?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for experienced developers
I have 7 years experience and I wasn't able to get any value out of this book.Based on some of the reviews on this site I thought that the book would be worth buying but unless you are in school or right out of school then your $35 is better spent elsewhere.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good on concepts, weaker on examples
This follow up to About Face is a good overview of the critical concepts to improve software usability.Cooper and Reiman know their stuff.Reading this certainly provides you with the grounding you need to make good decisions. At a tactical level, the book could certainly do more to help with real-world examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have read on selling on eBay!
"eBay income," by Cheryl Russell is unique among the hundreds of books on the subject, in that it takes the reader on a step by step journey through the process of learning how to sell on eBay, without overloading them with difficult to understand language that is so prevalent in other books on eBay selling. 5-0 out of 5 stars A knowledgeable "reader friendly" grasp of just how to go about doing business on the eBay website
eBay Income: How Anyone Of Any Age, Location, And/Or Background Can Build A Highly Profitable Online Business With eBay by Cheryl L. Russell offers a knowledgeable "reader friendly" grasp of just how to go about doing business on the eBay website. Outlining in considerable detail the most tactful and profitable approach to making the most profitable and productive management approach to sales online through the auspices of eBay, readers are provided with a wealth of first hand, experienced-based, practical advice that can have those readers up and operating before the day is out. If you have something to sell or are looking for something to buy as part of your own online entrepreneurial venture utilizing the Internet's most popular do-it-yourself website for buying and selling, then eBay Income is especially recommended and essential reading for its profusion of precise, intelligible tips, overall ideas, and step-by-step instructions.
5-0 out of 5 stars From the basic to the inspired
Never been on eBay before but looking for a place to sell some treasures that you found at the second-hand shop?Put up a couple of auctions and wondering why they never sold?Trying to figure out how to maximize your profit in such a variable environment?Look no further!Russell's book covers everything from setting up a seller's account (and the different types thereof) to writing a business plan, marketing strategies, and success stories. The main point of the book is that, like any business, running an online eBay business required professionalism in all areas. What separates the eBay hobbyist from the profitable business owner is the willingness to plan ahead, account for income and expenses responsibly and legally, and to sell yourself at every opportunity. This book will show you how. After the first chapter (an introduction to eBay's mission and history), the book moves through the information you'll need to know through the process, and each chapter ends with a checklist of steps to complete before you move on to the next chapter. The book is clearly and entertainingly written, with lots of fun anecdotes showing you other eBay sellers and how they learned the hard way (so you don't have to).Although you may not be able to find exactly what you're looking for using just the chapter titles or section headings, I really would recommend that you read the entire book and complete the worksheets before moving on, anyway.I've recommended this book to a number of my personal friends and clients, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to increase profits and reduce hassles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential For People Who Want To Make Money With Google
'Google Advertising Tools: Cashing in with Adsense, Adwords, and the Google APIs' by Harold Davis is one of those specialty books that is absolutely a must have for anyone that wants to succeed with advertising on Google.Teaching you the ins and outs of how to use the behemoth marketing tools AdSense and AdWords, this book will instantly start producing results if you stick to what this says and learn to make ads that are not only seen, but seen OFTEN.300+ pages of advertising yum yums will get more people to pull over and take a look at your web site, and you will better understand the metrics behind what kinds of advertising works and what DOESN'T.
4-0 out of 5 stars Though not groundbreaking, a comprehensive and current reference on marketing your site through Google
Harold Davis has not necessarily broken new ground with his "Google Advertising Tools" book. Yet, he's managed to put together a volume that summarizes effectively the basics of SEO and how to structure your site to maximize return on investment as a lead into Google Advertising at large. Starting with Google AdSense (placing Google Ads in your site), he works his way into AdWords (buying pay-per-click keyword-based ads) to wrap the book up with a detail discussion about the APIs offered by Google if developing tools to maximize your overall use of Google's interface and options is up your alley.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I'm just getting in to the "Adsense" arena and I found this book to be quite informative. More than enough to get me started. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too specific at points
The material, if you wade through it, is good.BUT this book is extreamly dry.And there is no excuse for that in the modern era.As the authors of the Head First series explain, dryness is not the way to impart knowledge. It simply doesn't work on humans.Good ideas, bad execution.
4-0 out of 5 stars I probably should have given it 5 stars...
This book succeeds brilliantly in two areas, but comes up a bit short in the third.
5-0 out of 5 stars More balanced than perplexed
Sometimes we want to have things to be black and white, but working at extremes has shown to be the failure path.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material On Search History & Google
Extremely readable book. Good history of early seach companies like GoTo and their business models, in addition to Google

3-0 out of 5 stars Half the Battelle's book zips! Then journalism settles in
"The Search" by John Battelle is a casual and mostly entertaining walk through the last 10 or so years of digital search, mostly but not entirely centered around the phenomenon of Google.
2-0 out of 5 stars History of Google, Not Search Engines
Though I'm coming to a review of The Search a year too late, I can explain why. I bought the book on its release, very excited to read some good journalism about the hottest business topic of the day. I was sure that Battelle, who had been chronically his progress on the book on his own blog, would deliver. Halfway through the book (in a matter of three days - a possible sign pointing to its lack of depth) I'm realizing that this is not the case.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book.
implementation and design of classes wise this book is replete with ideas. Since this book dealt with FDM, which are either cubbersome or difficult to program say american options, better is to deal with FE methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computational Finance made efficient
This book encapsulates all that is wonderful about OOP and shows how generic programming techniques (based on the STL) can be effectively applied to financial engineering and numerical analytic problems. The book requires only a first-course level knowledge of C++ (at the level of for example Ivor Horton's Beginning C++) and a first course level knowledge of Financial Mathematics (at the level of for example John Hull's masterpiece) and takes the reader on an entertaining journey through the basics of the STL and the applications of STL constructs to computational-financial and numerical-analytic problems, especially those relating to the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Also, the author makes a persuasive case for finite-difference methods and deals with a few subtleties of the Crank-Nicholson algorithm. For best results, it should be read along with a decent book on the Standard Library (for example the one by Nicolai Josuttis). Overall, it's a pleasure to read and learn from, on a par with Mark Joshi's little design-patterns volume, and more detailed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in c++ instrument pricing, period.
Let me just say that I have a few financial modelling books, from Dr. Brooks to Mr. Joshi, and this is the best book by far.It clearly explain how to price a particular instruments using this poweful language. The book uses Standard Template Language (STL), by doing so your code are more readable and much faster. If I only had this book a few years back. Now I must say this book is for C++ programmers and Quants you really need to know C++ from beginning to end, templates, pointers, references, classes or that stuff you need it. This is the only book that comes with working code, it doesn't matter what type of compiler you have the code in the CD will work.Mr. Duffy explains how to model one factor and two factor Black-Scholes equations using finite differences, options(vanilla, exotic),interest rate and much more. The CD even comes with an Excel driver to transfer your data to Excel. Quant superstar Justin London is coming with his new book in a few months, and that book might over take this one, but as of right now this is the best C++ financial pricing book around. You can't go wrong with this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very very useful book
I have been using this book a lot, in the recent months, and I am finding it very useful. I am not *at all* an expert latex user, but I do have decent programming skills, and I usually use a computer for hours every day, so my IT skills are decent, overall. For writing technical documents I have been using for years a fairly dated version of ScientificWorkplace, but I am now slowly switching to do more and more in latex, which gives me greater flexibility. What I usually do now is writing my documents in ScientificWorkplace, and then taking care of formatting and other unusual features editing the documents in Latex, through a program called WinEdt. In almost all cases, when I am in trouble with some commands or options, I find a clear solution in this book. For this reason, if your profile sounds a bit like mine, I would highly recommend this book. The new (fourth) edition also includes extensive references to the "hyperref" package, which is very very useful to create great pdf output that includes links to footnotes/sections/equations etc., bookmarks, and active buttons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the best for absolute beginners, but great reference
For starting out in Latex, I recommend one of the many free online tutorials, such as the "not-so-short introduction to Latex".That will get you more than started. This book is a great add-on reference to that, and the level is just right: not too wordy, but easy to follow. It has much deeper coverage of how to do graphics and drawings, how to create a bibliography, how to create postscript and pdf files, etc, in addition to the basics, of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brief, effective introduction to Latex
This is an ideal introduction to the TeX line of text formatting tools. It starts with a high level overview of the toolset. Then dives into document construction, then into tables, lists, mathematical formatting, and into user constructions and extensions for bibliographies, as well as other topics. PDF and Postscript formatting is covered. As well as AMS-TeX which is more extensions or mathematical formatting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greate Read and Interesting New Perspective on How things work in this Jungle
I got registered onto a few networking sites like Linkedin, Orkut and Hi5 in March and suddenly started thinking about term Network in social context. Being a computer engineer by profession and having worked on communication networks for last 5 years it was quite obvious to find parallels. And then I stuck upon this book. I must say i wasn't disapponted. Each Ideas has been built with convincing examples and is well supported by results from ongoing research being done by author. I would wait for him to write something on dissemination of information through social networks and network dynamics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for the Technical Practitioner

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book except a few errors and hpyes...
This book contains a lot of errors which should be corrected, and many pro-microsoft or authors' commercial tool hypes (which costs you your time). Some contents are repeating and it may take for you to finish the book longer than it should, but nicely written and well explaining a variety of topics. Basically this is a good book with few minor problems. With the same money, however, I am afraid that taking another Excel book could be a better choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lot of good usage information
I found the book to meet the needs that I had to get a better understanding of some of the more capable functions in Excel. In particular, I was looking for more insight in the use of Pivot Tables which it provided although it stopped short of going sufficiently deep in the use of functions and formulas within Pivot Tables which would have been helpful.I particularly liked that it came with a CD that could be loaded on my laptop great when you don't have the book readily at hand. There were a few editing errors with items refering to the wrong figure or table, but not difficult to figure out which was the right referrence, just a minor annoyance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent In-Depth Resource
This book could not be more comprehensive. If you need to go deep and want to have a paper-based book to do it with (versus online help/tutorals), this is the one to have on your desk. A chapter each week will help you me much more productive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!
Advanced Modeling is a fantastic book, and pretty easy to follow with relatively few coding errors. There are some books out there that have errors in the code that they use, which makes it difficult or someone to learn the techniques.Even for those without a solid background in VBA, this book can benefit you to start learning how to code properly.Anyone who is relatively proficient with Excel can definitely gain a new trick or two from reading this book. All you really need to start using this book is a basic understanding of finance concepts (e.g. portolio theory, capital budgeting, binomial options pricing, Black-Scholes, etc.).The techniques that are taught are also useful in other modeling exercises, and not necessarily just for finance-related topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cookbook for Financial Modellers
Yes, the book won't teach you CAPM, Black-Scholes, or much financial theory. But there is NO shortage of those books. There is a shortage of books with real-world Excel solutions to applying financial theory to data.I've had this book for a couple of years and have probably only used 10% of it, only because I don't have time, real business need, to do the rest.I sometimes take it to bed to read and dream of having the time to try out some of their other models. That's the only thing I can add to the other reviews here, the amount of love and passion for the subject put into this book. There's not one extra padded word or graphic in this book.Yes, if there was one book I'd have to take to a desert island with Excel and some financial data this would be it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really satisfying
One of the main points of programming books is to help the reader understand the models being programmed. On this count, "Advanced modelling in finance using Excel and VBA" fails miserably. There is very little explanation of the financial concepts and models.Anyone hoping to learn finance from this book will be very disappointed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible of Open Space
This is a very good hand-book for open space newcomers.Easy to understand and easy to read.I strongly suggest this book for anybody who want to start learning open space technology

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most valuable books in the world
As Brookings revealed in 2000, most of the world's 10000 biggest organisations don't yet have the measures to govern the vast majority of value now produced in services and knowledge businesses because as our networking age blossoms value dynamics are mainly intangible, deeply woven into the human relationships we self-organise, not for precise planning and overpowering command and control from the top. Value multiplication is a core gravity which should be embedded in everyone's right to work, learn , behave openly. 4-0 out of 5 stars a "How to" book
I recommend using open space tehcnology and/or other large scale intervention techniques to mine the collective emotional intelligence of a group of people (this may be your company, or people from an acadamic field you belong to). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU WANT TO BE IN PICTURES...!!
Are you a Macintosh filmmaker and DVD designer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is designed to give you a grounding in professional filming and editing techniques.
4-0 out of 5 stars OK, I see how that's done!
After searching Apple's support site for help with using these two programs, I turned to David Pogue's excellent manual.I have several of David's manuals and this was certainly up to his standards. Easy to read and follow.Although there is a tremendous amount of meat in the programs, you probably wouldn't discover all the potential without spending a little time with another excellent Missing Manual.I would recommend this to anyone interested in building a professional iMovie or creating a smooth DVD collection of favorite images or clips. And, with almost no effort at all, you can build an out of the ordinary slide show made complete with music, fades and a nice variety of special effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be your own movie director yourself - painless!
It would be natural to think why does you need to buy this 22 dollars book, if iMovie and iDVD is so easy as Apple claims. But unfortunately, it is not easy as they say, (as all software vendors which want to earn more money by save the cost to print clear written manual) It need some extra help, with more English, I mean. In this point of view, this book is more than worth, in particular, you can learn more tips and advice to successfully make your own movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, but short for the price
This book is a well-written look at, like the title says, the elements of user experience. While I think the $30 price tag (retail price) is a bit high for a 180 page book, and I think the topic would have been better covered in an eBook or long article (or series of articles), the author succeeds in communicating his vision of the pieces that comprise a user experience.
1-0 out of 5 stars User centered bloatware!
Some nice ideas in a book with far too many pages. This story could be told in an article (OK, I'll admit a lenghty one), but it doesn't need a whole book to tell. And, although the ideas are nice, they are certainly not essential and they could be traded in for other equally good ideas on user-experience (imho)

5-0 out of 5 stars Better IA through better understanding of the Dev Process
JJG has enlightened me about the 5 layers of User Experience Design: Strategy, Scope, Structure, Skeleton, and Surface.I have learned that the traditional Information Architecture of categorizing, labeling, and indexing data leaves much to be desired when trying to have a significant impact on the User-friendly outcome of a web application's Software Development Lifecycle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for small projects!
Note: SPSS 13.0 for Windows Student Version cannot open data files containing more than 50 variables or 1,500 cases. Having said that, if you have less than 50 variables and 1,500 cases to deal with then this is the software for you. It came with a (brief) 227-page users guide that was pretty comprehensive all by itself. Order the SPSS 13.0 Guide to Data Analysis to go with it, and you have just about everything you need to fiddle with and learn the basics of statistical analysis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for SPSS and statistics students
I have used this product in a research methods class and found it to perform quite well. While it may not have all the features of the full SPSS package it is more than adequate and does not require the student to pay the hefty fee of the full version.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
Beware - if you buy the student version it is not big enough to run the files necessary that you work on in class. Nowhere did it indicate on the Amazon site that it had limits of file size. Wouldn't one assume that if you are selling a "student" verson, that it will be able to run your school files?Don't buy it if you are a college student and need this software to complete your projects. I wasted $80 plus dollars. Didn't learn of its limitations until AFTER I loaded it, and when it wouldn't work found the limitation statement in the manual. Very disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Awesome, really!
I am a business consultant that works with Microsoft, HP, Oracle, HP, Xerox etc. and teaches how to conduct sales presentations to CXOs for a living. I cansay that this book has taken the look, feel and ease of creating a first class executive level business case to a level I could have not imagined. At first it is quite daunting and overwhelming. But I had to get some business cases together for 50 marketing professionals in Sydney on a special workshop and I crashed into it.The MODD system once you "get it" is easy, fast and addictive. I ripped through Excel, PowerPoint and Word integrated data and information in no time flat with the MODD tools. It scared me it worked so well. This stuff is like awesome and it is refreshing to actually see a program work without a hitch. ( I wonder how they did that?)Krieger has made me look really, really good. Go for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great integration of programs, Excellent CD
I have trained over 3,000 people in Microsoft Word. None of them had ever heard of or used styles. Styles are necessary if you're going to use Word correctly. So, I bought this book for two reasons. First, I find that a woman writes a better book about learning software. I think women authors seem to explain software in better detail, especially for beginners. Second, the back cover describes a CD that has "Dozens of professional designs and layouts." I like examples for learning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful for Creating Documents + Great Tools
This book is like having an assistant to help with my documents. I create a lot of my own documents at work, and they have to look good. The book is a true help with that, not to mention the tools that come with the book. And, I can't believe how many how-to articles and tip sheets come along with the tools on the CD. Those articles are so great for quick and practical answers to the whatever I need to get done - I use them all the time.
