Ian Sommerville's Software Engineering
A great introductory book on software engineering. It gives you a holistic view of software engineering, but lacks in details. It won't teach you how to draw ER diagrams but it will tell you what they are.

Good introduction and explanation of software engineering
Overview of Software Engineering, with a brief explanation of software process and project management. It mainly covers the design issue and introduces the method of handling critical system.

Rather Cursory
Sommerville undoubtedly owns great knowledge over the topic. Unfortunately he has difficulties to write monolithicly. Most of the time he is beating around the bush. The examples he uses to explain the different topics are rather unusual and do not help to better understand what the techniques are all about.

Is a good book
Is a nice book, it hasn't got many advanced stuff like backups or problems solutions but is a good book for people just become a middle or new postgresql user.

Comprehensive coverage
This is the only PostgreSQL book that I know of that covers writing functions and triggers in PL/pgSQL with any level of detail.There is also a very detailed section on performace monitoring and tuning.Overall, the best book you can get on PostgreSQL administration.

Excellent book for beginners
This is a great way to get started with postgreSQL or for learning databases in general.Each sentence actually makes sense and doesn't require referencing other texts like so many other technical books.The book is very thorough so don't let the size intimidate you.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting their own database project. ... A Disgrace to Engineering
Probability and Random Processes can be easily approached with grace and elegance so long as the professor and/or writer possess such talents.All too often Albert Leon-Garcia comes across as a total wacko in the possession neither.

Run and Hide
I intend to burn this book once the semester is over; it is utterly worthless.My professor was coerced to use the book and assigns homework from the book, but the exams look nothing at all like the homework or material from the book.
Far too many examples
The text would be more focused, cheaper dollar-wise, and generally improved if the auther cut out all of the examples.They are essentially worthless.I really enjoy this material, but every time I go to the book as a reference, it's like watching a Golden Girls marathon, completely unbearable.I end up wading through example after example never finding any real substance ...and there is only one chapter on random processes!In short, too many examples make theory hard to find and follow. ... Closing the communication gap...
Facilitating communication among businesspeople and software developers in the preparation of acceptance tests is the mail goal of Fit, which also helps automate those tests. A tabular representation of tests provides the common language whose clarity and precision are key to improving communication between technical and non-technical people. As Dave Thomas says, Fit helps closing the "gap between the software that [is] written and the software the user [wants]".
Good, not exactly great.
The first 175 pages of the book seem devoted to convincing management that the tool is worth using. The next 75 or so pages give details on writing tests. There are about 45 pages of the programmer's perspective. The rest of the book mainly deals with extending the system in ways that most people won't bother with. Finally there is a very brief word on non-Java tests that simply says to refer to the web sites.
Better structured than the online docu
The book describes in detail how to use Fitnesse for the combination of requirements management and automated testing. Though this is interesting, the book does not offer more information than the online docu to fitnesse (though certainly in a better structured way, as the structure of the online docu is a nightmare).

DAM good book
Extremely usefull roadmap to navigating the new territory of digital workflow.If you are a professional photographer shooting digitally, this book is the essential guide toeverything you need to capitalize on digital's opportunity and avoid time consuming mistakes.I feel like an evangelist, as I've bought a handfull of copies for colleagues.

Finally, a great guide to managing thousands of photos
One of the most difficult realities of managing thousands of digital photo images is how to label them in a consitent manner so that you can easily retrieve photos and keep track of photos that have been altered. Another important consideration is if you will be able to read the information as software and hardware changes occur. Peter Krogh makes logical suggestions and tells you why he chose to label an image in a particular manner. The DAM Book also has great suggestions on backing up photos. I have always struggled with labeling/numbering consistency, Peter Krogh makes it all very logical.

Essential Resource for Photographers
Any photographer who is serious about their craft needs to take a good look at The DAM Book.This book was written by a true professional that knows their stuff and will assist you in getting your photos from the the boxes and boxes scattered no doubt throughout your house and into the digital repository that is a better place to store, access, and retrieve the precious prints that you work so hard on producing.

Great Information for Online promotion
Hi. I am a REALTOR in the FL keys with 3 web sites. I found the information in this book very helpful. It pointed out very specific ways to promote a site and also provided good sources for backup.It is hard to find material these days like this that really point out ways to promote yourself online that really work.

A way to understand howspreading words works
As social science proffesional involved in the marketing field, I am continually dared -if not demanded- to explore entrepeneurial iniciatives to get on the edge of the competition and reach smarter and demanding customers to seed an idea and make it roll over the world, it is sure that task is not easy, and many of times even good ideas not suceed, why?
Excellent source of knowledge for innovation management
I have been using this book for years in research and teaching at the university level. There are other fine books that concern innovation diffusion and adoption but Roger's book is THE reference. Many of my students in information systems struggling to find a theory to study information systems have "adopted" parts of this book, especially the five factors that determine adoption, e.g., relative advantage, complexity and compatibility. A more tricky area is to categorise potential and actual adopters,e.g., who wants to be a laggard? I also like the discussion on "pro-innovation bias",i.e., that innovation is sometimes seen as a law-like process wich is not always the case. Some big companies' alleged "innovations" are not really needed by the users. This book should be valuable to all that are interested in change processes in social systems.

This is a trully magnificent and wonderfully-written book. It offers a thorough introduction to diffusion research and it is packed with a ton of illustrative applications that make the content seem relevant and not abstract to the reader. Great Tips, Good Read
I loved this book, and I've read lots of eBay books. Unlike some other writers these guys give you the straight story--the good with the bad--and don't make a lot of pie in the sky promises. This really keeps you centered, and realistic.I found some great tips for sourcing, which is a real challenge for all the sellers I talk to. There were also helpful tips on auction management, customer service, and selling internationally. The profiles of actual PowerSellers and many quotes and anecdotes really made this a good read.

My best eBay book investment to date.
As you can see from my Me page, User ID harleyglasses. I have read many eBay related books. This one tops my list for may reasons. Althought they are not powersellers, Brad and Deb don't pretend to have invented the information in their book, they start off by thanking all of the Powersellers and other professionals that contributed to the book. I might add that many are in the top 100 sellers on eBay and are members of PeSA, the Professional eBay Sellers Alliance. Brad and Deb have all the right connections :-)

SBS2003 R2 - direct, pertinent, useful
I found this book to be an excellent one volume resource on the variety of features and functionality offered in SBS.
Companion book for even non R2ers
While this book is called the SBS 2003 R2 companion book, and is indeed a companion to the R2 product, even if you don't have R2, but merely SBS 2003 SP1, this is an excellent resource and should actually be purchased instead of the original SBS companion book.The "must have" features for non R2 owners include the chapters on setting up secure wireless and the ISA content.The "must have" stuff for R2 era owners obviously include the WSUS information.

Lacking explanations as a textbook
I am trying to learn the subject by reading this and Gelb. Even though this book covers a lot of introductory concepts, it is lacking proper derivation of equations that I usually see in most math and physics textbooks. I find this book very disappointing for its price.

Best practice for application software design
unlike many other books focusing on how to use a technology, or illustrating what is basic OO concept, this book focus on how to analyze and solve day-to-day application design issue.It has summed up many best practice and distill them into more concise and easy to understand building block abstraction.The style of writing is very easy to follow.It also makes me interested and want to read more, unlike other dry-reading book that make me sleep.I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in making a coherent and maintainable design for large system.

Required Reading.Period.
I just finished reading this book by Eric Evans on "Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software."Domain Driven Design should really be required reading in college, in my opinion.Eric Evans has a way of describing benefits of rich modeling techniques and how to develop them.He guides you through learning to develop the ubiquitous language of the domain, an important concept for effective modeling.He also addresses many common concerns such as scalability with the techniques in the book.
Might be good: could not finish
I must admit, I haven't finished the book. I find it nearly unreadable. There might be some crumbs of useful wisdom, but the boredom reading the book sent any brain cells to sleep that could absorb that wisdom. If the book would be condensed to - say -- 250 pages, it might be useful (did anyone edit the book?).

Excellent book for the closely held business owner
I found several very helpful concepts in this book, which in my opinion make it well worth the cost.The author does promote the "franchise" model, but states that readers do not have to actually franchise their business, but they must think about their business as if they were going to franchise it.His point appears to be that what business owners must do is develop the business into a model that could, if desired, be replicated.This inherently requires a discipline about the business that will substantially improve it. ... Excellent resource - but use with caution
I purchased this book with it was first published and it greatly influenced my thinking and has continued to do so to this day.There is a large caveat I want to share before continuing - be careful of the Zachman Framework because if you do base your enterprise architecture on it you will soon discover that making changes is a tedious process that ripples across the matrix.That said, I continue to believe in the basic concepts and components of the framework, and I also think that it is an excellent way to gain a view of an enterprise when you are attempting to model it. Very Good!

Excellent cook book for professionals
Certainly the book is not for beginners. But it was a real help in my recent practical work. Lots of tips and tricks. Highly recommended for the SAP Workflow consultant desktop.

Very good introduction
I had never used matlab when I started reading this book and I found it very easy to follow.I now have a good working understanding of the matlab basics and I recommend that anyone who's looking to get started with matlab pick up a copy.

The perfect introductory text for MATLAB
If you are completely new to MATLAB then you will find no better book to guide you through the basics.It is perfectly suited for teaching yourself several basic but still very interesting and useful programming techniques.Topics are presented to the reader in an order carefully determined to produce maximum benefit and knowledge.The book is short and very readable, with many example programs.
A truly excellent text!
This book was written for teaching Matlab to freshmen in an introductory engineering course, so most of the examples are from first year physics and engineering.Nevertheless, after looking at all competing texts, I chose it to teach Matlab to sophomore geology majors, most of whom had not yet taken calculus or physics.I was very happy with the results; by the end of the semester the students were well on their way to being competent programmers, and I think they will find calculus and physics much easier because of their experience with this book.

McConnell's high level approach to Project Management remains valuable even today. Be sure to read McConnell's recent texts.
The Software Project Survival Guide [Steve McConnell] remains applicable today as when first published in 1995. McConnell has a clear knack for combining research, experience, and theory.His writing style is clear, concise, and easy to understand (introduction level programmer through to management).
Software leads need this book
Software Project Survival Guide is one of the best books I've ever read about leading a software project. The author is not trying to sell any specific process or methedology, instead the book is full of down-to-earth practical advice about software development.
