5-0 out of 5 stars Internet law for dummies :)
I believe this is a good tool for non-lawyers, who need to know about the legal aspects of internet. This is an excellent reference for common doubts, like being impersonated on the internet, internet auctions and its legal binding, privacy, digital signature, etc.5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating "legal guide to the 'Net"
Laws governing the 'Net seem to change as often as the 'Net itself changes. For every technological breakthrough, there are also seemingly endless legal questions that eventually come up. This book attempts to address the major legal issues regarding the Internet. As such, it's a great guide to the most common legal questions to be asked.5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Author Jonathan Bick gives general readers a short introduction to the ways that various laws apply to the Internet. He focuses on existing laws about contracts, defamation, privacy, copyright, trademark and other areas, and explains their application to the Internet environment, since few laws specific to the Internet have been drafted. He covers a variety of topics, including Internet-related taxes, rights, options, obligations, liabilities, debt collection, advertising, billing refunds, intellectual property protections and more, all organized into one- or two-page discussions. Each section is followed by a summary of the law or recommendations on how it applies to business. We [...] recommend this clear and easy-to-understand guide to anyone who uses the Internet for work, business or entertainment. And if you hit a section that doesn't apply to you, skip ahead - one advantage of the book's organization is that you can jump to the sections that interest you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive history of a great technologist
This book renders a wonderful service by telling the story of an inspired mathematical physicist and technologist, John Atanasoff, who made splendid contributions to technological advances in computing. With the advent of World War II, Atanasoff was called away from teaching duties at Iowa State University in order to serve the military research needs of his nation, thus his pioneering binary electronic computer did not become contemporaneously well-known.
1-0 out of 5 stars paranoia
(a) Author could not understand the difference between a computer and components. A computer is an integrated entity ofcomponets arranged properly by the architect. A component, regardless of its importance, is just a part. A component by itself can not be a computer. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wake up Amazon!
Amazon should remove "reviews" based on personal animosity rather than on the merits of the book under review. As for me, I found this book to be well-written and enlightening, adding to the search for truth about the early history of the electronic computer. We all owe a debt of gratitude to John Atanasoff for his vision in helping to bring about the digital age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and a must read!
I currently manage an E-Commerce travel business and am very impressed with the information Mr. Trout has provided.I found the information very insightful and helpful in terms of avoiding any type of legal situations or protecting our rights. The sample policies were especially of great value to me. I highly recommend this book for all Internet related businesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable information on Internet law.
After hearing Mr. Trout speak recently at a seminar, I decided to order his book.It contains a great deal of helpful information on Internet laws, and a valuable Glossary of terms.Mr. Trout obviously knows his subject very well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Trout lands a whopper with "Internet Laws"
How rare to find a book about a complex topic that clearly, precisely, and effectively illuminates the darker corners of a new continent just now being strung with lights.Mr. Trout's book is easy to read, but not naive; clear without being facile; and, most importantly, useful without the clutter that often incapacitates resources whose primary goal is to navigate technical material.Need expert advice from an experienced and successful attorney?Turn to "Internet Laws" for guidance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Biasedopinion, but still worthy
I had a dream when I was younger to be a Lawyer practicing Corporate Law or IT-based law. That dream never came true because now I'm an IT manager, but the fire was stoked when I picked up this book to review for one of my Masters courses. The book give you a clear understanding of legal terms, the trend with a focus on Internet Law, and how businesses will need to prepare themselves for the future precidence setting rulings to come. You don't have to be a legal geek to appreciate this work. Even outside of my scholastic requirement for getting this book I think I would have enjoyed it on it's own.It has indeed sparked a desire to search for more books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich, Useful Information in a Humorous, Readable Format
Timothy Casey, a senior VP for MCI WorldCom, transmits executive-quality knowledge in "ISP Liability Survival Guide" for a panhandler-level price. Despite the fact that he is what we techies would probably call a "suit," his writing is relaxed, anecdotal, and even humorous. But don't let his conversational writing style fool you; he is a MAJOR player in this industry. As a corporate executive and quasi-ambassador, Casey is a kind of Internet lobbyist. He has been immersed in virtually every state, federal, and international regulatory craze, preventing the regulators from turning the Internet as we know it into one great big cluster... (I hope I'm not the only one who still uses that phrase from Clint Eastwood's 'Heartbreak Ridge.') After reading the book, it kind of amazed me that he would disclose as much useful information as he does for the relatively small cost of this book. Other prominent Internet-lawyers-turned-writers chargeliterally five times as much, and you get less useful stuff and more legal jargon. And even if you enjoy being ripped off, no one has written a book of this type yet! Casey covers every aspect of Internet law that affects ISPs and similarly-situated e-businesses and customers. If anyone has read about the richness vs. reach debate (Evans and Worster, "Blown to Bits"), you will know what I mean when I swear that the info in this book is extremely rich. I love this book, and it still amazes me that in an industry where information is our chief commodity, Casey is giving away so much rich knowledge, practically for peanuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important, essential, crucial reference for ISP managers.
Computers and Internet service providers (ISP) are an integral part ofnearly every aspect of modern life and business. In ISP Liability SurvivalGuide, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Counsel for MCI WorldComTimothy Casey brings to bear his expertise and experience to providedetailed explanations on the varying laws governing networking and theInternet, and how their technical features impact running a liability-freeISP. He offers critical considerations for adopting effective policies andprocedures for effectively structuring an ISP operation. He also givesvaluable insight into contracting with users, vendors, as well as saleschannels to accommodate the laws and maximize ISP profitability. ISPLiability Survival Guide is critically important, crucial, essentialreading for anyone charged with operational responsibilities for providingISP services in today's technologically driven communications marketplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Keep ISP's Operating on the Strait and Narrow!
ISP Liability Survival Guide written by Timothy Casey is an excellent guide for ISP's to follow in order to run an effective service and remain within established industry standards of practice and the law. This bookwill help ISP's to sort through all the existing laws, regulations, policies, and issues and help them to determine which ones apply to themand how applicable ones should be enforced through their services.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Multimedia Law broken down to basics
Recently having been enrolled in a multimedia law class for my degree program, I found the information in the book valuable enough for submission to this review. The content herin is definately worth checking out if you are an individual seeking to create multimedia content. Though the text islaw oriented, it reads quite well. Having zero law experience didn't hindermy growth as a law weilding artist. I learned such invaluable tools ascontract writing, copyright law, the five rights held to a copyright, soundlaw (mp3's are illegal) and many other tools to help me stay safe in theindustry. Though complex in structure the content is delivered in a formatworth checking out. Once you can cut through the rhetoric that all lawyersspeak this can be a wonderous tool to any multimedia creators library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overview of copyright history through court cases
Copyright's Highway is not an overview of or introduction to copyright law.Rather it gives clearly written descriptions of the histories of some influential court cases relating to copyright and slanted towards copyright issues on the internet.Despite the title this book is very much slanted to the celestial jukebox and away from Guetenburg - after the second chapter we are in the 20th century.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
This is not intended as a survey of copyright, although it does succeed admirably in introducing nonlawyers to the field and defining the major themes for those already in the field. Its primary focus, however, is upon several key cases and key issues, which are explored in detail, partly through the eyes of some of the major participants. This is of course a bit dated, and it is, alas, out of print. But if you at all interested in reading an overview from the undisputed master in the field, track down and read this book.Whether you're already into copyright or just wanting to find out about it, you'll come away with an enriched understanding of copyright.3-0 out of 5 stars Good but wordy
My background is economics and finance and not law.Maybe because of that I found this book to be wordy and a little long-winded.The author approaches the subject from a lawyer's perspective. The book could havebeen better if it the author went into less detail on the one or two courtcases he highlights and spent some more effort exploring some interestingconcepts he introduces.Economic concepts like public good and privategood, complementary and substitute goods, monopoly and copyrights, the roleof the marketplace, and the intersection of copyright with natural rightswere hinted at, but never fully developed. The highlight of the book ishis chapter on the two cultures of copyright.Economists and lawyerssometimes fail to give the proper weight to how culture affects outcomes insociety.Overall this is an interesting book that could have been betterif the author was more pointed in his writing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Treats project management as a graphic design process
I had high hopes for this book when I started reading it. After all, David Seigel is highly regarded around Internet circles as a web design guru. Unfortunately, Siegel's graphic design background permeates his company's project management philosophy for building web sites. Basically, he advocates managing the process of building web sites like you would manage a graphic design project. Whether you agree with this or not (personally I don't), this book only contains about one-tenth of the project management depth of Steve McConnell's 'Software Project Survival Guide'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie
This book along with "Creating Killer Websites" should be a must have for any web designer. Yes, the books are getting a little old now and date them selves in regards to discussions about technology. But the books hold up over time with their common sense approach to project managment and design theory. These books are well worth the read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious waste of time
...This book is aimed at graphic designers, marketing agencies and the like who put together nice marketing oriented sites, whose sole job is marketing the company. For people such as myself who implement lage scale ebusiness websites, intranets, corporate portals etc there is nothing. The concept of dynakic database driven sites isn't even mentioned.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Many wrong statements about the patent law
The book is full of errors and mistakes. The author apparently knows very little about the U.S. patent law. Many assertions of the book are simply wrong. If you want to learn something about patents, this is not the bookfor you. For example, the author boldly and wrongly declares that the U.S.patent grants 20 years of exclusive use.The author is completely unawareone of the most important terms in intepreting patent claims:"comprising" which means "including but not limited to"in patent law. As a consequence, the author mistakenly, but convincingly, explains in detail why a claim 2 is broader than a claim 1 when in fact theclaim 1 is broader than the claim 2. Because the book is well written andeasy to read (with interesting statistics and stories, etc.), it is evenmore dangerous for readers because it constantly declares wrong laws. Areader may be taught some patent myth instead of useful information. Theauthor should have had someone with at least some patent law experience toreview it and correct the misstatements before it was released to thepublic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical explanations about how the law applies to software
I liked this book because of its practitioner focus. It really explains the law and how it does (and doesn't!) apply to software. Kenneth Nichols also does a good job of "putting things in a universe," helpingthe reader to understand how the application of patent and copyright law tosoftware has become so muddled.5-0 out of 5 stars Every software developer should read this
Kenneth Nichols is both a computer scientist and a lawyer. This gives hima fantastic grounding from which to write about software patents. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative but overly verbose and lacking...
insofar as providing a basic and customizable yet still fairly comprehensive copyright/terms of use notice that could be included with a software package. As a non-lawyer, I feel that just placing a (c) with a company name and 'All Rights Reserved' notice must somehow be insufficient.Otherwise the length of the terms of use verbiage present in so many public and commercial software products would not be so descript and specific. If Nolo had provided such a notice for use by the book's readers I would probably rate the book as 5 stars rather than 4.5-0 out of 5 stars First step in due diligence and protecting your work
This book focuses solely on what you need to know about software copyrights and how to go about obtaining one. In addition to covering the basics of copyrights, you're shown how to sell copyrights, what to do in the event of infringement, and the limits of protection that a copyright affords you.Note that patents offer much stronger protection. It comes with the following forms:4-0 out of 5 stars excellent starting point for multimedia copyrights
For multimedia developers, this book is a great stepping stone. It explains the entire copyright process, including what forms to fill when and why.It also goes in depth about copyright infringment and attainingrights. As a bonus, it includes samples of library of congress forms, andalso contains the actual forms needed to apply for a copyright. This bookis inexpensive, and i'd recommend to anyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Slightly outdated on some points, but good general coverage
Any book on "online law" that was published in 1996 is going to include _some_ things that are out of date. Nevertheless this volume has held up extremely well. And it was written by a group of attorneys who know their stuff in both law and technology.
