5-0 out of 5 stars The best wedding photography book
Great advise on both technical and artistic aspects of wedding photography as well as planning and logistics. Concise, to the point information without excess writing. And of course lots of examples of inspiring photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best wedding photography book I own!
As a wedding photographer, I tend to collect books like this one.But this one is AWESOME.It has specific recommendations on exactly which lenses to take, as well as other incidentals to pack in your gear.It also tells you the exact settings/lens used for each photo in the book, AND it tells you what extra work was done in Photoshop.I rarely read technical books cover to cover, but this one I did!

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know
Bambi Cantrell is, quite simply, a legend in the wedding photography industry, both as a shooter and educator.Skip Cohen has impressive credentials of his own, as president of Hasselblad USA, and now a guiding force of The Rangefinder Magazine and WPPI.If there is anything about wedding photography that these two luminaries don't know, it's not worth knowing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take your digital printing to the next level
Mastering Digital Printing is a comprehensive manual/textbook for the professional photographer or artist who demands the knowledge to control every aspect of his/her final output, as well as the printmakers who assist them in this process. From printing techniques, file management, history, paper selection, every aspect of printing is here. The photos and bios of printers, artists, and photographers in their studios is helpful to see the layout of the workspace and creative ways of using the space available. This is the book you need to take your digital printing to the next level.

2-0 out of 5 stars More about how to spec printing equipment than about making prints
This handsome volume badly disappointed me. I think the proper rating for the book is about one and a half stars, but I gave it two out of generosity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freeman's insight
As a professional photographer I found Michael Freeman's book to be the most informative and concise study on the complex and somewhat baffling world of digital photography. He is a master of his craft and opens one's eyes to the major developments. His writing and illustrations are supberb, he simplifies what could be compex adjustments and tasks.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disjointed
I did not care for the 2 page snippets used to describe most of the topics in this book. In addition, the book did not seem to flow well. For example, some black and white conversion techniques were listed in one part of the book, whereas others were listed in other chapters, making it difficult to find and compare them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on B&W techniques with Photoshop
Whenever I read a photogrpahy book such as this one, I always carry around those little plastic post-it notes to mark any important pages. After reading it, I found that I had marked almost half of the entire book! Freeman explains different ways of converting color files to black and white using layer masks, contrast, desaturating, and everything else. The great thing, though, is that he gives you solid examples and a step-by-step process for each one. He tells you how to fix a washed-out sky that unbalances the photo, how to manipulate each color when it has already been converted to black and white and why this is such a useful tool, how to work with skin tones, how to get great contrast without clipping, and even how to use layers with each color. As a bonus, at the end of the book he talks aboout printing; what inks are good, what paper is good, etc. A very thorough and easy to understand book with great detail. I recommend this book for anyone interested in B&W photography or B&W Photoshop techniques. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic mumbo jumbo
I was excited to receive this book - I love learning about how other users master the techniques of Photoshop. Boy was I disappointed! I've seen these illustrations before - rehashed and rehashed - and if you're using Photoshop CS or CS2, don't waste your time. If you're still working with Photoshop 4 and have never done a collage, I guess you should buy this book. although you'll learn more on Adobe's tutorial website than you'll learn from this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
The book is not bad ,but the sample is too simple...but it has detailed walkthroughs of the creation ..so maybe it's very useful for the people who just begin to learning photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great projects, great book.
I liked the projects in this book, as they really showed you how to use Photoshop to achieve professional results. Anyone who wants to learn how to combine many different images into one slick final presentation should check out this helpful guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for....
I was getting tired of ordering books on digital photography, only to find out at least half the book was devoted to manipulating your photo on the computer. I've been a hobby photographer for about 10 years, and I wanted an explanation of the differences between 35 mm film cameras and the way a digital works. This book gave me what I was looking for. The side bar hints in each section are great. Now I know why setting my digital the way I would for a film shot is not always getting me the results I expect.
4-0 out of 5 stars helps to start, that's all...
the book is just to start
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent primer on digital photography
This is an excellent, well-written introduction to digital photography. Miotke explains the basic principles of photography, and my guess is that he's done a lot of teaching which helps to make the explanations very clear and systematic. I found the chapters on exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO particularly helpful since I'd never totally understood how these related to each other. There are lots of photographs illustrating how aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. affect the image, and lots of tips on what one might consider basic settings, and how one can vary them depending on the circumstances. He also has a long section on composition, again with illustrations. There were a few things which he does not cover which I would have been interested in -- e.g. he doesn't explain what the different kinds of lenses are for a digital SLR camera (e.g., what does 20 mm. vs 30 mm. mean). Each chapter contains assignments designed to help one see what one's camera is capable of. He assumes you either have a compact digital cameras or a digital SLR and tailors his explanations to each kind of camera. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad guide but...
The information itself is useful enough, although as others have mentioned it's essentially what's in the manual. The bigger problem that I ran into was that after 3 months the binding fell apart and pages began to fall out of the book! Perhaps that explains the new edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Magic Lantern's guide to the Canon Digital Rebel XT
I am a rookie SLR operator, this book clearly centers on explaining the operation of the controls of the XT, it does not get much past this. For those of you who already know it, then don't buy it, but for us 'rooks' it was good. Now if only the spine of the binding did not fall apart in the first week, and I take care of my books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for the XT

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, Fast and to the Point
After trying several self-help books on the Adobe Photshop 7.0, including Photoshop 7 for Dummies, a friend recommended this title, which is the official training workbook from Adobe Systems, Inc. The title was being used as a textbook in his college graphic class and he found it to be in logical sequence and with an easy to understand format. If you are a not-every-day user of the program and want to learn specific techniques to enhance or modify your photographs - this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A computer novice can be an expert with this book.
I have been doing photo editing for some time now, mostly for my mothers scrap booking. She decided that she wanted to fix photos herself so she signed up for a class. She barley knew how to use the mouse and press the button to turn the computer on.This book has taught her how to not only run the program but also how windows and Macintosh work. This book teaches step by step through multiple lessons, and has instructions for both Windows and Mac users.I recommend this book to students and those wanting to know how to do image editing.I taught myself how to restore and edit photos and have been doing it for 3 years, and I have learned things from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up and running on FCP in a week
If you are ever forced to quickly learn Final Cut pro for the odd job where Avid is not a viable option, or you want to start editing your on stuff on the cheap, buy this, read it and practise it for a week and you will be a Pro at Pro, knowing everything there is to know, at least, where to find it and whether it is doable or not. It is a book written by an Avid editor for Avid editors who have to go through the same learning curve. You can be very surprised going through it on how similar the two editing systems are and most of all, how quickly you can synthesise the information and make it second nature. I fervently recommend this book being so well written, going always to the point and covering everything properly.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book Yes Indeed
As an Avid editor and now learning FCP, I can recommend this book for helping to understand where everthing is.This book is a must unless you want to tear your hair out.If you know how it feels going from Media Composer to DS, then you will understand why you need this book and I might add others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving from Avid to FCP?This book is great!
We have been an Avid only edit house for years, but reciently purchased two Final Cut systems. Most of the transition was pretty easy, but trying to figure out how to do some of the things in FCP that we did in our sleep on the Avid slowed us down a bit. This book draws great parallels between the two systems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A lifetime of knowledge in 312 short pages
Lou's writing is concise and his examples are relevant. Lou has decades of experience but is still young enough to realize current trends. Most photography books explain techniques, which this book explains in detail. What separates this book from others is his ability to explain the intangible "art" of photography. He describes in detail (again with currentexamples) food composition, styling, color and most importantly--"The Saliva Factor."
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book with lots of tips
After making a few attempts at food and product photography, I begin to appreciate the effort and techniques required for this type of work. Lou Manna's book would have been a great help if I've had it earlier. Nonetheless, it's a great help and I've learnt much from it. Packed with photography tips and key 'secrets' on how other items are substituted or made into food is invaluable. I only wished there were more pages on that rather than the business aspect since the title gives the impression it's all about food photography. Fewer pages devoted to the basic digital camera technology and how to run a photo business would have me giving it a higher rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Catching Food Photography
The pages of Digital Food Photograpy by Lou Mana are packed with information and tips on how to take great food photos.Lighting techniques are covered in great detail as well as computer and equipment tips. Step by step photos of food arrangments, as well as using different angles, help give food photos a more appealing look. This book is a must have for anyone interested in food photography.Lou Mana has packed a lot of great information in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!
This book is fairly new and deals some modern issues. It discusses film, point and shoot, and dSLR techniques; however it leans more toward the P&S cameras. Very well written and structured. It is a pleasant overall read and also a very adept guide book. Definitely a must have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro, but do not expect miracles
This is a good intro book for those not familiar with the topic or those who need a quick refresher. The book follows the typical "Dummies" structure. It serves as a good introduction to digital photography, but do not expect a lot of advanced information or getting knee-deep on specific topics.
2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't learn what I was looking for.
I don't use Photo Elements.I also already know how to turn the camera on and press the shutter release.I was hoping this book would be like a beginning photo course, and that I would at least see some features like shutter vs aperature priorities, but I didn't see that type of stuff. (Actually I have done a bit of normal 35mm SLR stuff, it is only digital that is new to me).If you are a total newbie to all photography then this book would be better.

Digital Photography for Dummies is the first Dummies book I have read. It is fully updated and revised now in FULL COLOR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preserving the art of monochrome
Film photographers have long savored black-and-white photography for its stark alternative to realism, and the stripped down, minimalistic approach to creating an image.Digital photography threatened to push black-and-white photography to extinction, but, thankfully, artists like Hamilton have preserved the spirit of the medium and extended it through the use of Adobe's flagship image editor.
5-0 out of 5 stars my photographs have improved with the help of this book
I consider this book to be in a class with the best books written on photography.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Fine Art Book
This is a very nice fine art photography book dealing with black and white. The author is obviously very well versed in Adobe Photoshop and his expertise is evident through his writing. The inforamtion is well presented and clearly stated. The images are well done and have a broad appeal to both a professional and amateur.

4-0 out of 5 stars One good read.
I really enjoyed reading this book.It helped get me caught-up with the digital photo age, and it was filled with useful information. One thing I also found is that if I already knew some material, I had forgotten I knew it; and this then re-enforced it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended, with some reservations...
This book should have something of interest to most digital SLR users. It's full of useful tips and explanations that should appeal to a wide range of skill and experience levels. That being said, some caution is in order for those at either extreme the learning curve.Experienced SLR users will find that much of the material here is a review of basic concepts (how aperture effects depth of field, shutter speed and motion), wide angel vs. telephoto perspective, etc. Sometimes a refresher on the basics is good, however, and there were lots of little facts and tricks thrown in that most would find interesting. Those new to photography or SLR's should read with caution, however, due to some simple editing mistakes. For example, page 51:Fig 1.32 shows a histogram with with all tones bunched and clipped to the left, properly captioned as underexposed.Fig 1.33 shows shows tones all in the middle range, improperly captioned as overexposed.Fig 1.34 shows tones bunched and clipped to the right improperly captioned as properly exposed. To someone experienced this is an obvious layout/editing error. To someone new this would be confusing or misleading.(I noted similar errors in Busch's D200 Field Guide)
