4-0 out of 5 stars Take your editing up a notch...
I have been using entry-level NLEs (e.g. Vegas Movie Studio, Pinnacle Studio, Magix Movie Edit Pro) for about four years. Any progress in my editing skills came from the traditional 'trial and error' approach, and from learning by watching other amateur-produced movies in a video club that I belong to...
4-0 out of 5 stars A great start
Editing digital video gave me a good insight into the baiscs of digital editing. The last time I edited video it was on a linear system and I found some other texts a little confusing. This book enabled me to use my NLE system with confidence.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly junk
This book is 1/3 listings of movies and other such irrelevant nonsense.

5-0 out of 5 stars SMILE!YOU'RE ON PHOTOSHOP!!
Are you having a problem with digital imaging and processing problems? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Eddie Tapp, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you step-by-step digital imaging and processing production techniques that are easy to understand
4-0 out of 5 stars Tips to increase your Photoshop productivity
This book is really different from any other Photoshop book I've come across. Many Photoshop books seem bent on illustrating every feature the software provides. This can be a bit intimidating for beginning Photoshop enthusiasts, who still have trouble navigating the software. This book simply aims to help the reader organize the Photoshop environment in a way that makes it easy to perform the work of digital enhancement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Digital Nature Photography Closeup
This book only covers the basics of macro photography and is suitable for 'newbies' at photography. Book and pictures are average quality. Experienced (macro) photographers should look further for technique and inspriration.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent How To book on macro photography.
This is a well written, extremely informative book on close up photography.Jon Cox is very knowledgeable and also fun to read.I highly recommend this book.I have already learned a great deal and I'm not even finished with it yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dull, uninspiring photos and very little about seeing
I bought this book sight unseen based on the positive reviews and the recommendations of others. There is nothing wrong with the book, it has a good rating, but I just didn't like it.First, I found the author's photos very boring.Very low contrast (could be a problem with the printer/publisher, but if so this is still not an excuse) and just plain dull. He has a photo of something brown and asks if it's a photo of a puddle or an arial photo.I have no idea but whatever it is, it's not interesting or pretty to look at.Some of his triumphs come from things like jumping up and down while taking photos of trees (result is pretty bad), zooming in and out, etc. It's like if you gave an SLR camera to a kid and let him play with it.Yes, we should all be as naïf as kids some time and think outside the box and all that, but this book just isn't going to teach you how.One exercise he discussed was to take an egg and photograph it in different situations.Sounds like fun, but I was expecting a lot more from the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I knew that I wasn't going to like this book after 2 minutes of flipping through the photos. They are mediocre at best. Not one inspiring shot in the entire book! And the advice is useless.
5-0 out of 5 stars Photography and the art of seeing
I became acquainted with this material after checking it out of the libarary.I have read several books on improving photography by various authors.I am convinced that doing the exercises outlined in the book will improve anyone's photography and it is one of my favorites. I purchased a copy of the book for reference material and to have it on hand to complete the exercises as time allows.Mr. Patterson, in my opinion, does an excellent job using explanations and examples to convey his ideas and thoughts. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop CS2 RAW
I must admit, I took a long time switching to digital for photo work, and then I thought I was set. It appears that not only do a I have to master the camera for settings, but in those instances where the money talks, I have to learn about RAW format rather than the high res JPG format I thought was dealing me a good deal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Too much graphic art - too little substance
In the field of digital photography, capturing and developing "RAW" files is a hot topic, largely because this is usually the route to the highest image quality attainable. The subject can be a bit opaque because each manufacturer mechanizes in-camera RAW files differently. Also, there are many different RAW converters (software packages for developing the RAW files into optimized images) from both the camera manufacturers and third parties. One of the most popular RAW converters is Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), originally released by Adobe as a plug-in for Photoshop 7 and Photoshop Elements, and now integrated into both products.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to RAW
I bought this book after reading the other 5-star reviews, so I thought Wow! This must be it! Well, it's almost 'it'. The book gives a well-written and useful explanation of what RAW is all about, and also shows some good examples of what you can do with RAW. It also helps you to decide when to shoot in RAW or when you'd better just switch to JPG.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 7 Bible
Well structure for the professional or novice. You'll find yourself looking trough it every chance you get.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love his human side of technology
I must say, as much as this book takes VERY LONG to get through, because I have to stop, try the stuff out myself and really try to understand it, I find myself motivated by Deke's humor. As much as he contradicts himself after saying that he'll be concise in the beginning but half the time he's talking nonsense (funny nonsense that is), you can't blame him. That's his style after all! I have found myself loving the book because I'm always curios to see what silly thing he's going to say next? I love it how he knows when to be serious about the tools and when to make a good joke about it. My favorite has to be the one about using the healing and cloning tools with a picture of a baby's bottom that heals the dents on his forehead.
5-0 out of 5 stars Use this as a reference book once you already know PS
This book describes the fine intricacies of all the tools, the filters and the features of Photoshop. Where other books lead you through lessons and tell you to set X tool preference to Y, and you may happily use the Y preference for years without even knowing there is also a Z preference, this book explains all the preferences for all the tools and gives illustrated examples of what the various settings produce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Digital Photography Pocket Guide 3rd Edition
Well thought out and very easy to use. The appendix (page 139) is especially helpful for finding the right camera set up under almost every possible conition. From point and shoot to SLR, beginner to advanced there is a lot to be gained from owning this little book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Digitial Photography --Great Little Guide!
This is a great little guide for first time digital camera owners and even some good tips for amateurs.I recently purchased a Nikon Coolpix camera and didn't really know how all the functions worked.I read the first half of the book with my camera by my side and found out my camera does much more that I thought! This guide takes you through all the basic modes and buttons on your camera, then it has a alphabetical reference of functions.Lastly it gives you tips on how to take great pictures.I now own a Nikon D200 and just used the book again. It's small size makes it easy to carry in your camera bag for reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars For beginner
Its a good book but suggered only for beginner photographs which have no interests in professional photography. I don't recommend this book for intermediate or professional photographers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have bought a few books on boudoir photography and this was disappointing. When I see a book, I want to see pictures that I can aspire to.These photos look, for the most part, like pictures anybody would snap of their girlfriend or wife without regard to background, lighting or any type of effects.I would recommend "Garage Glamour" as a book for those of us trying to get better at boudoir photgraphy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Idea Starter
I am an advanced-amateur/semi-professional photographer that has done quite a bit of what would be called boudoir photography in my years of taking photos of women.
4-0 out of 5 stars A woman's point of view
There is nothing like being admired to make a woman feel great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a really good book!!~ I'm 15 and just got it for my birthday. It is easy to read and gives alot of info that I never knew about taking pictures. Now, all my pictures are coming out way better then they used to.The only thing I suggest is having you digital cameras' manual with you when reading most of the book; it's helpful to try out certain things on your camera while reading the " Joy of.." book. A great book...big, beatiful pictures, and lots of info!
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated and written
I found this to be a wonderful book to help anyone learn the basics of digital photography. The writing style makes this an enjoyable read and the photographs are beautifully done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful as a very basic introduction to the novice
Nice photos. Good binding, good fonts and layout.Enthusiastic prose. For me it was maybe a little too basic compared to other intros. A reasonable introduction to digital photography from Lark Press and a good value for sure, but there are other choices. My preference would be for anyone who wants to get seriously, not skimmingly,an introduction and more enticing details, into digital photography would be to check out the four soft- cover series (also from Lark/Sterling) by Michael Freeman. Freeman's "Complete Guide to Digital Photography" ISBN1-57990-534-X,first volume, was,in my evaluation, a superior introduction to the canvas of topics. And Freeman has two or three other books in the series (caveat: the others have a hard to read light font), all under twenty dollars from FantasticShopping, an Amazon affiliate.Buy the Freeman Complete Guide and the above volume and use the two as you gain confidence and want more meat. 5-0 out of 5 stars A basic primer on differences between digital and print mediums
DV Filmmaking From Start To Finish by Ian David Aronson's will reach both amateur and professional digital video users with a basic primer on differences between digital and print mediums. Familiarity with Final Cut Pro or Adobe After Effects, the two programs used here, will aid in understanding DV applications in either PC or Mac formats, while the author's background as a teacher of digital media lends a logical progression to his tips and practical applied examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A strong reference for digital film making process
DV Filmmaking for Ian David Aronson gives you in 18 chapter a coverage for the production, post-production and distribution process of the digital film making.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, Great Job!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good
I'm not sure if I was reading the same book as the other reviewers because I can't understand how they could give it five stars. I couldn't get past the fact that all of the pictures were boring, poorly composed, amateurish in quality, and all set in the same environment. I usually don't return books, but I returned this one right away. Do yourself a favor and check out Bryan Peterson's "Photographing People - Beyond Portraiture" if you are looking for a first class book that is leagues beyond this offering. If you are looking for a book that contains the same kind of diagrams as this book does, then check out "Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers" by Christopher Grey. Yes, it's specific to studio portraits, but the concepts of lighting are the same. Indoors or outdoors, all photographers are ultimately trying to shape and model light. Some tools are better suited to the studio and others outdoors, but the concept of direction, tone, composition, and modifiers are essentially the same.

I must admit I'm more interested in practical advice and techniques I can use right away than theoretical background, and this book has both.I was surprised to discover that the nuts-and-bolts of lighting did help me do a better job of shooting portraits outdoors and on location.Because portrait photography is so much about the lighting, this is a good general portrait photography book, too.Recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For the neo-pro
Many photographers surrender control over their images to their cameras' built-in converters: take back the art by understanding how to manipulate RAW files with THE ART OF RAW CONVERSION: HOW TO PRODUCE ART-QUALITY PHOTOS WITH ADOVE PHOTOSHOP CS2 AND LEADING RAW CONVERTERS. From calibrating a digital camera to work with RAW files and understanding differences between the leading RAW converters to manipulating both color and black and white images, this is for the neo-pro who wants to get the most out of his camera.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great discussion of RAW workflow and more
Most digital cameras deliver pictures in jpeg format by default. Digital SLRs and many more advanced digicams provide a RAW format as an alternative. While jpeg provides convenience, the RAW format can give you more photographic information, more flexibility, and ultimately better pictures.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have RAW workflow reference
Finally we have access to the RAW workflow expertise of Uwe Steinmueller in book form. And what a beautiful print version this is! Steinmueller, the publisher of OutbackPhoto.com on the Web, is well known for his comprehensive e-books on RAW workflow and other topics. This book is a treatise on RAW workflow which I think should be the first resource for the serious advanced amateur or professional photographer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Photoshop Book From O'Reilly
O'Reilly hits another ball out of the park with this solid Photoshop book.I love the layout and paper chosen with this serious and the tutorials and examples are just as good!!
3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but I expect better from O'reilly
Its often been said that there are several ways to do the same thing in photoshop. This book just gives you a few ways of doing them.My biggest complaint is that it appears noone proofed the photos. Some photo are of poor quality on 1 page and then fine on another.Another photo of showing a whitening effect shows someone with pink teeth.O'reilly is the best usually when it comes to IT books but this effort is subpar.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book I've been waiting for!
At last! This is the book I've been waiting for!I've been on the hunt for a book that goes over practical photo editing with Photoshop-you know, how to alter colors, fix over/under exposure, remove distractions, etc. Most books I've come across are either designed for the Photoshop professional (meaning they leave out all the steps between A and Z), or they're too basic. This book is it-a step-by-step guide to Photoshop editing for the casual Photoshop user.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for me, I am a Dummy :-)
Okay... Altho i am getting better, I still am not very savvy on the computer. Because of this book my friends think I am a photo guru!!! This book is soooo easy to understand and the example pictures are a big help. I am having so much fun!!! I highly recommend this book for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 3 For Dummies
I do a lot of scrapbooking and was quite disappointed when I purchased Photoshop Elements because I could not seem to get around in the program. Now that I have the Dummies book I'm navigating the program with the greatest of ease. The book has talked me through step by step in easy to understand language. My pictures are looking much better and I'm able to print the sizes I want and recently I've started creating accessories for my pages. So I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 3 for Dummies like me
I never know how much of a "Dummy" I am until I try to fiddle with a computer program. The Dummies series have always come to my rescue.I enjoy the lively banter-style format which makes me feel like I am getting personalized assistance. With no arguments!Even if I never figure out my software, at least I will have enjoyed the experience! The book covers the subject, but with no consideration to related programs (ie., XP, wherein I believe my problems lie...)XP for Dummies, coming right up! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
I have been reading this book for the last 30 minutes and it's one wow after another. I just turned to my dog and said "This book is amazing!" hehe.5-0 out of 5 stars Even for the well-seasoned
I **LOVE** this book!I've been using Photoshop since version 4 and i'm self-taught.I am not an expert yet but then i don't consider myself a novice either. 5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop reference extraordinaire
I love this book! I wish all software books were written this well. If you took 20 Photoshop books at random and put them through some magic process that took all the good stuff out and condensed them into 1 easy to read, well-organized, no fluff, no 1500 pages and 4 pounds of paper book, this would be what comes out.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The cutesiness is dull, dull, dull
I learned a lot from this book, but it was annoying to have to plow through a lot of meaningless chit chat to do so.The book could be 25% shorter without all the senseless yammer--which was not that funny. When I'm trying to understand a particular tool or function, I don't appreciate the extra time it takes to read about how pixel resolution is like grandma's oatmeal cookies, or whatever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help
I always had difficulty with the original manual. On a given subject it referred you to another place in the manual. The Dummies book does a better job of covering a subject in it's entirety. The index is also much better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than The Manual
I learned a lot from this book and it really turned Photoshop from something intimidating into a very powerful tool that I now enjoy using. My photos are much better now and my wife is amazed at how well I can salvage seemingly "ruined" pictures. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless book unless you are (or want to be) a commercial photographer
If you are a portrait photographer (with no intention of moving into commercial photography) this book is a waste of money.
3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly lightweight glamor-retouching expose'
If you are looking for a definitive instruction book on portrait retouching, this is not the book.Readers will find the process of glamour retouching interesting: chopping inches off hips, transplating locks of hair, whitening teeth, etc. But there is not much hard information provided, only broad approaches. However, the book does provide a window into how the actual world of commercial glamour photography operates - including how art directors interface with photographers and retouchers. Troche-Stapp shows how she found a unique niche in a very competitive business. Worthwhile information for someone considering this venue as a career.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit misleading but that aside, its good!
The title is a bit misleading. When I got my hands on this book I thought I'd learn some cool techniques on retouching as well as how to add glitter and stuff in photoshop. Nope Sorry didn't learn how to add glitter in photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful compendium
In summary, this is a very insightful book, which works well on several different levels.First, it is clearly intended to be inspirational - to draw its readers into new avenues of image making and creativity. In this respect the book is wonderful, since it not only contains many intriguing and appealing images (and sets of ideas) worked through by the author herself, but also showcases work from other artists (many of whom have established high and worthy reputations in their own right). It's a digital visual feast!Secondly, the book is also intended to be instructional; to deal - essentially - with artist toolkit issues and specific project guidelines. Here the biggest depth of detail is centered on what will likely be the most unconventional of approaches to the majority of readers. For example, more information is provided on alternative physical media involved in many of the projects and categories of work - covering "non-standard" print media, materials for image transfers, pencils, fixatives, paints (including encaustic forms), etc.Photographic technique and imaging software procedures are covered less comprehensively (in any event, and despite the comments of an earlier reviewer, this is not a book about Photoshop expertise). Finally, the book is also a little bit of a memoir. The author describes herself as an image maker rather than a photographer; but, nevertheless, she includes little pieces of information on the context of the original photography - what she was trying simply to record in that place on that day.So, altogether, a splendid book - highly recommended.
