Not usefull
This book containes lots of pretty pictures but not a lot of helpful information on the "how to" details for someone new to the process.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Photoshop Elements 4 (Teach Yourself Visually)
It was hard to use and understand.

More Illustrations than Three Other Books.
The 'Visual' books are probably the most heavily illustrated books available on ny subject. This one, like the others has literally hundreds of color images the illustrate what they are tying to teach far batter than endless lines of text. This is particularly true of something like Photoshop which is basically a software packages that works with images. The images are a mix of color screen shots directly off of the computer's monitor and drawings specially made for this book that illustate some particular point.

Across the Board
When a digital camera takes a picture it saves the information in a digital file.This file may be processed by the camera for easier viewing or use.RAW is the name of the file format for unprocessed data.This RAW file is capable of more manipulation when transferred to a computer than a processed picture, like one in the JPG format.This allows a photographer to make the file look more like his or her vision.
You'll take all your pix in RAW after reading this.
This excellent book presents a thorough, in-depth discussion of capturing, processing and manipulating images from digital cameras. It covers the Raw Mode capture file format. For those unfamiliar with it, this format saves the exact image data recorded by the camera, creating files holding the complete color data the camera is capable of detecting. In contrast, the JPG images saved by default by most digital cameras discard some of the data the camera could potentially record in an effort to miminize the file size (storage requirement) for a given image quality level.

Very nice images. Very nice presentation. Very good book.
Too many Photoshop books feature images that start out ugly and are uglier by the time the author is finished with them.This book is inspiring in the beauty of the images and broad utility of the techniques offered.Anyone who wants to approach Photoshop from an artistic angle will like this book.

This is a beautiful book and I highly recommend it for any Photoshop user beginner, advanced or anywhere in between. I consider myself pretty advanced in Photoshop and I learned a lot from this book. Just overall a great book and you won't be disappointed.

Stumbling to shortcuts in 3 days
Until I purchased this book, I had owned FCP4 for six months.I had learned my way around the software well enough.I felt comfortable, but not necessarily proficient.In order to improve my editing time, I went ahead and ordered this book, also with the intent of getting my Apple certification, as this is the same text used in their classes.Normally, I am the type that I will skip sections that discuss things that I'm certain I know, but I went ahead and followed every step in the book.
Great book for learning FCP
When looking for a book on FCP, I just read the various reviews. Even though some others looked quite interesting, I chose this one and am glad I did. I wanted a specific type of instruction because I have some expert-level chops and ignorance at the same time.I'm new to video but am a professional recording engineer by trade. I'm fully conversant on the Mac and non-linear audio programs so I needed a book that got both completely simple (for video concepts new to me) and also provided some depth at the same time.

Excellent if you're using Elements 2.0
This is a great book if you're still using Photoshop Elements 2.0.I'm glad I got this book, even though I plan to swtich to Elements 3.0 soon. It's easy to follow and comprehensive. Thank you.

Layers Revealed
Whenever I start a new interest, I must buy every related book. When I began digital photography and using Photoshop Elements, I increased my creative library exponentially. No matter what I read, I had a mental block about layers. The CD-ROM exercises and text of this book, finally helped me understand the concepts and use of layers. Perhaps the humor is a bit corny, but the content, hands on training and content make this a must buy for newdigital photographers using Photoshop Elements.

Good book, sophomoric humor
If you can ignore the author's attempts to humor you, this is a pretty good book......he takes you thru PE2's paces, with lots of pictures and an accompanying CD with exercises. It's $20 well-spent, since the User Guide that comes with the software is pretty much useless unless you're familiar with the program to start with.Can't go wrong. ... Read more

Very Good, but I wish there were more......
I got this book and CD-Rom for Christmas 2004.The biggest advantage is the CD!It adds some cool stuff to your Photoshop 7.I wish the book had gone into more detail or given you more lessons, which is why I can't give it five stars.
Fantastic Book for Photoshop
I Have been using photoshop for a few months now. You're gonna love this book and the effects it allows.
It took me a while to get around to loading this program onto Photoshop 7 but after doing so I can't figure why I waited so long.It's easy to use and so-o-o forgiving.I particularly like being able to reset the copy and retain the total effect.Some of the effects are much better and more useful than others, but once you get past the fun of playing with the process it will save you hours in creative time and make your work more unique.A great investment. ... look at the Transitions palette
The book gives you the essential knowledge to quickly ramp up on Premiere 6.5. You learn of the fundamental importance of the transitions palette. It acts as a backbone to your video. One remark by Sengstack is worth repeating. Make the transitions palette full screen. Its elements are an excellent overview of the most important Premiere elements. Like the Clock Dissolve, which lets you dissolve from one image to another. A highly used method.
good book for beginners
If you need to get up and running quickly, this book is for you.It's concise and to the point.Like other books in the 24 Hours series, it is a place to start.Finish it, then start reading the more in depth books on Pemiere and non linear editing. What a great book

Photography Class Suggested Reading
Much more detailed than the book that came with the camera. Has helpful hints and is easier to understand.I took a photography class recently, and the instructor suggested I get this book to better understand my camera.He was right.

Close but no cigar...
Far more accessibly presented than the actual product manual, but I was certainly left wanting more technical and procedural detail.You'll learn more and more easily than you would with the OEM manual alone: it also makes a good field guide because the index is direct and comprehensive, so it won't slow you down.The photos the author includes as creative examples are, for the most part, of little use and, more than occasionally, a bit weird.

Great guide
I disagree with some reviews on this site. This guide was much better than the instruction book that I got with the camera. Why dis a guide because it doesn't mention microdrives when most folks don't recommend them--they are fragile, produce heat, and with the price of memory dropping, not such a great buy. Photoshop Elements lets you enhance static images, while Premiere Elements lets you compose movies. As you might expect, there is close correlation between the ideas in both packages. So Adobe offers this book that gives a unified view.

Very Bad and Misleading.
This book was slapped together to make a fast buck.If you know absolutely NOTHING about directing or video, this book might be for you.If you have spent a few minutes searching the internet, then there will already be very little it can teach you.If you are still thinking about buying this book, take a look at some of the better reviews.Do they seem like they were written by someone like me or you?I took the time to check them out: one of the reviewers wrote about every single title released by NRP on the subject. I wonder what kind of costumer this is... Some other reviews have tried to lead us into thinking that the book appropriately addresses its target reader: the absolute beginner.This is an obvious attempt at justifying its lack of content.Fortunately, I read a borrowed copy and saved my money.

Almost Content-Free
I'm quite amazed at how bad this book is. I have the sister book, Digital Lighting and Rendering, and that book is excellent. The author of this book has apparently written "the" book on Lightwave. And Digital Cinematography and Directing has gotten a lot of good reviews. And some bad ones. Pay attention to the bad reviews (like I wish I had).
This is the one you've been lookin' for!
It's this simple; Dan Ablan has a gift for teaching and that translates to your benefit. His books, like his 3D Garage CD training series utilize a well-crafted and laid-back style of instruction that makes potentially complex concepts completely understandable, esp. if you have no prior knowledge or experience. The information and material is extremely well-rounded and is written in such a way as to build on itself in a logical progression. The writing style is also causal, engaging, encouraging and funny at times, avoiding one of the pitfalls of many (text)books: boring the reader to sleep with a dry tech manual speaking style.

A thorough grounding that will need supplementation
Let's start with the basic, should-be-obvious premiss: the Final Cut video editing platform is NOT "iMovie Complete"...except in the sense that it is completely different. The differences between Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro are in certain capabilities -- Express is not a "dumbed-down" version of Pro, it just lacks certain capabilities. The interface is a professional non-linear editing (NLE) tool whose efficient use is not obvious at first launch, unlike iMovie.
Be Careful of Second Hand DVD's
The book looks good and but it was a few months before I settled down to start learning Final Cut Express.Unfortunately the DVD supplied with the used book was seriously corrupted so the book is virtually useless and I do not remember where I bought for return....grrrr

Well Intended but Painful
If you like to read every last detail of how to perform a task, this is the book for you. She really was complete.

Good principle information.
It does not ever mention the Sony CD 300 camera pictured on its cover, but does give understanding in the general operation of digitals and some insight on film and its history briefly.

Best book I've seen!
This is the bestbook I have found so far on digital photography.If you know the basics and are looking for some in-depth info, I recommend you buy this book because it covers all aspects of digital photography well.I guess I would describe it as an intermediate guide, since one person complained that it is not a beginging book. Actually, I think that depends on the person and how much you want to learn about the topic. Also, it is easy to understand and unlike many books I have seen it is really well illustrated and the pictures helped me to understand the text--so the illustrations are well thought out. If you are shopping for a book on digital this one should be considered strongly.

Complicated for a beginner

Good for beginning beginners
I got this book at the same time as the Nikon D70 Field Guide, and I like the other one better but this one is very good, too.It's more basic and doesn't pertain to any particular camera, but it's good if you're REALLY a beginner and need some place to start.After I read this I enjoyed the D70 book even more.Photography is becoming very fun for me thanks to books like this.
