More high-level concepts and less hands-on guidance
This is certainly a good book for getting introduced to most high-level architectural concepts related to Network security, cryptography, mandatory/multi-level access control etc. From a application development perspective, this book falls short on how to build architecure, design and implement them into your business applications which ultimately meets the end-user. The author justifies the high-level concepts well enough from a generalist perspective, but the industry-standards from OASIS leans towards standards-based application security protocols..which pushes a developer/architect like me to take those suggestions first and how to apply them in real world.The book also does'nt address on how-to build security for emerging application architectures based on Service-oriented architecture (SOA), Identity Management, Net-centric Federated applications. As a developer/architect using Java or Microsoft .NET or open-source based distributed applications, I need guidance on how to implement the recommended concepts (in the book) for example using biometrics or smartcards for building multi-factor access control at my application-level...unfortunately I don't find any answers for real-world implementation.

A must-have reference for anyone working with Dynamics AX

Excellent Book
The Chapters are really good and easily understandable. Point to be highlighted here is that the author has explained examples with SAP GUI Screen Shots. Great SD book for experienced consultants, too
I've been an SD functional consultant since 1993 and have recently started working on a very small project as the only SD consultant. Even though I've configured most aspects of SD, I haven't done it all, nor have I done it alone. Since I'm an independent consultant, this book has helped me to get a grasp of all that I need to do and what questions I need to pose to the client. This is the best SD book that I've seen - a definite keeper in my library.

Well Presented Concepts and Implementations (5th ed.)
Foreword: I have been running my own DNS servers on OpenBSD and FreeBSD for about 4 years. All of my previous DNS knowledge was obtained from the man pages and online tutorials. Most comprehensive book on DNS and Bind
First off, the most recent edition of this book was published in May 2006, so all reviews prior to that are discussing previous editions of this book.
Informative, but not as clear as it could be
I found this book to be informative, but I sometimes had trouble understanding what they where saying.I found The Concise Guide to DNS and BIND by Nicolai Langfeldt to be more understandable in some places.If you have a good grasp of other parts of unix system administration, this book would most likely be fine. If you are more of a beginner and only want one book, get The Concise Guide.However, I recommend getting both, because they supplement each other very well. ... Read more

too many junks in the book
I have to say it's a book full of junks and gaudy texts. The author wants to cover all the topics in this field but he ignores the readability as a scientific reader. Most of the time you may find all the texts are lack of focus.

Excellent Coverage on Distributed Systems
I just completed this book for a graduate course on Distributed Systems and was amazed at the volume of coverage on so many topics ranging from CORBA, RPCs, Fault Tolerance and Security to list just a few.Tanenbaum is reknown as being the best writer in Computer Science and this is an excellent book to read and use as a reference.My only complaint is that it is starting to show signs of being dated and this is why I gave it only 4 instead of 5 stars. Hopefully, in a new edition there will be coverage on the super network GRID and more enhanced and extensive coverage of Intelligent Agents.

Excellent Oracle reference tool
I was part of the Oracle implementation team at our company, and I have found this book to be a useful tool for myself in the year since implementation as we continue to explore new functionalities. It is also a useful tool for the application users to learn how Oracle works.In fact, I not only purchased this book for myself, but I have purchased copies for several other people in the company.I refer to it all the time.

The other cluster flavor
Clusters, like many things, come in various flavors. These can be roughly stated as `high throughput', `high performance (HPC)', and `high availability'. The "Linux Enterprise Cluster" is a good read for those looking for the `high-availability' cluster flavor, for perhaps a mission-critical computing resource. There is thus more emphasis on fail-over and service request handling than, for example, MPI, exacting operation calculations, and HSI maximizing techniques typical of HPC endeavors. This is not to say this book is not applicable to the other cluster types. Could you do with a chapter on SystemImager? How about Ganglia? Rsync & SSH? Building a kernel? All this step-by-step? Awesome! I was building an HPC cluster at the time, and found this a good book for drilling into deeper cluster software infrastructure details while at the park or waiting for a class to start. It was however sparse on hardware details and proper supporting infrastructure, but no book under 10 pounds is going to cover everything so be prepared to read a lot. I did not evaluate the included CD-ROM, which is loaded with goodies, because I simply downloaded the packages from the Internet as needed.
Great Explanations and Recipies
If you want to build any HA cluster, this book is for you. The author has the ability to write from entry level to advanced Linux admin skillsets. His recipies for HA and LVS clusters are complete and realistic. We all know there are few Linux books we read from cover to cover. This is one of them.

Karls book seems for me the perfect book for small clusters. He describes every single install and configuration aspect I could possible think of.

Comment on 'CSI' review
This is not really a review but a comment on one of the other reviews.I noticed that the same review for "Computer Sci Instructor 'CSI'" appears for both the 3rd and 4th editions.I don't know if his review was only entered for one of the editions, but that Amazon erroneously entered it in both editions.Perhaps, he copied the same review for both editions since he felt the same comments applied to both.
Lots of content - but very wordy and reader unfriendly
I had adopted this book to teach Distributed Systems to a senior level undergrad class. I think I may have made a mistake, not knowing before hand how hard it would be for me to read this book (despite having some background in distributed systems). The students constantly complained of it being too "Wordy" and "vague".Few generic figures and mostly all text that seemed to be a rehash of several IEEE/ACM papers without giving sufficient examples or explanation.Some times, the authors did indeed explain some concepts with examples. At other times, they just left the concepts in vague mathematical notation or arcane definitions expecting the readers to make sense of it.While the english is grammatically correct, it is written in such a stuffy academic style that I found myself having to read most paragraphs twice or thrice before I could figure out what the author was trying to say.At times, I was thinking the authors should have been lawyers instead. (If the authors are reading this .. please consider the maxim: A picture is indeed worth a thousand words).A side note: I am not averse to reading academic papers. I do that all day long.But I just don't think a textbook should be written in that style.
A very good book for distributed systems.
As the awareness of resource sharing and cooperation has increased, distributed systems have gained unprecedented attention. However, designing a practical distributed application is a demanding and complicated task. Coulouris et al. have excellently addressed this design issue with Distributed Systems: Concepts and Design. This book covers various topics from fundamental concepts and principles of distributed systems to some advanced topics, such as replication and distributed multimedia systems. For each topic, the authors provide information in sufficient depth and breadth for readers to conduct further research.

Excellent study material for a practising IT engineer
Together with Mrs. Lynch's other book "Atomic Transactions", this book has been my "Bible" for years already. And now that I am starting my own company in software development, I think about making this book obligatory reading for my first new employee. Not only because of the nature of its contents, but also because of the way these are presented, and the thought-work behind it. Ideas like the provability ofalgorithms, seeing the user as an automaton and showing that Lamport time >>really>> works, are rare to be found together in the same textbook. This book puts research back where it belongs: before practice, not over it. Mrs. Lynch has done a great job. It is upon this work of hers, together with "Atomic Transactions", that the IOA specification language is based, created in the LCS of MIT. IOA is now in near-operational working order, and puts into application almost all of the thoughts expressed in this book.
definite reference
Professor's Nancy Lynch's "Distributed Algorithms" is a definite reference for theoretical treatments of many hard problems in distributed computing. It is a textbook, but written in such a clear style that makes it almost a pleasure read. Rarely have I seen something like that! The book has a right proportion of theoretical proofs, practical applications, philosophical appreciation of the problems, research questions, examples and study points. the only book of its kind
At MIT, I took the course 6.852 Distributed Algorithms under Professor Nancy Lynch. It was an excellence course. This books is based on her lecture notes. Before this book, there is really no book that covers thesematerial in rigorious and consistent matter. One usually have to read theactual published academic papers. Because different author may usedifferent notations or models, sometimes it is hard to see the wholepicture. This book shows exactly that. The algorithms are presented in aconsistent notation, and the models and the assumptions all the explicit,clear and consistent. However, Professor Lynch's lecture style can getreally dry and boring, sometimes I can't help felling asleep because theclass was so early in the morning. Well structered, provocative reference work
A well researched reference, providing solid basis of evaluating most issues surrounding clusters and the supporting/participating infrastructure. Naturally some of the more complex subjects are not always discussed in as much detail as you would like - but that was not the purpose of the book. Good value for money, highlighting most issues.

Book for the beginners
I felt this book was more like a beginners guide to Cluster Concepts and Veritas products. You would be disappointed like me if you are in quest for any greater knowledge on configuration of Veritas / Oracle Clusters or any tech details. THE Clusters Book

Excellent book overall, with some minor errors
This is the best Pthreads book. The writing style is conversational, very easy to read and interlaced with code examples. The reader will progressively learn the subject, building on the accumulated knowledge. Coverage of multi-theading concepts is very complete. There are some excellent diagrams.
Excelent book to get you started with Pthreads
The book along with the code examples provided in O'reilly's web site provide an excelent starting point to the Pthreads programmer.

Seriously outdated
Man, you can't keep selling the same book forever and keep everyone satisfied. I liked the way they presented the idea of BW, but it was seriously outdated. They should make enhancements and upgrades atleast one in two years

Step by Step guide to where?
Anybody buying this book to learn some BW will be very much disappointed. Like the way the book is organised but older stuff. I can't beleive the greedy publiser is still selling this book. Not only they should stop selling, also should recall the book.

Surprisingly boring to read
I tried to read this book.I have it on my book shelf and I can see it right now, but I really couldn't get past the introduction.For a supposedly technical book, the first chapter reads like a 1995 introduction to the 'information superhighway' and about how wonderful it will be.This sentence on page 9:
More Meat thanI can EAT

Finally an IT book with Meat!
If you are like me and you are frustrated after picking up an IT book and only getting superficial platitudes rather than keen insights, then you may be pleasantly surprised by this book because it really reveals, as the title states, the "Power of Events."The book starts off establishing the author's grounding in Enterprise Architectures (and their shortcomings), and then proceeds to build an intuitive foundation to seduce the reader into the world of events that they may not have realized was so much a part of distributed systems.While the formal notation used in the book may appear daunting, it is easily mastered and the subtle rules and mechanism are exposed through many thoughtful examples.I will say the second half of the book is a slower read than the 1st part, but the book should leave you with some confidence that there really are some breakthroughs in software technology that will have a positive impact on distributed IT System quality and the complex event processing shows that potential. ... Excellent information in an unwieldy wrapper
I found the information in this book to be quite good.There was a lot of focus on the interweaving of multiple techonologies that is required by RAC, and a significant amount of detail in each chapter.I think this book is a great start for a RAC DBA or DB and systems architects.
Worked for me!
I used this book to deploy Oracle 10g RAC on Linux and UNIX. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the chapter. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Administrative experience to use this book just a decent understanding of database design. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle 10g as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

Really good technical details
I found that Oracle RAC is very complex and I was very happy to find the amount of technical details in this book.It guided me stepwise through a complicated RAC installation and the online scripts were most helpful to me.This is a book I recommend to all who are getting started with RAC and Grid tech. ... A waste of resources and completely inadequate for the Server+ exam; it does not cover all of the exam objectives.I am surprised and disappointed that Mike Meyers would have anything to do with this prime recycle bin material.

This book is really worthless
This book is very poor for the content, the exam is based on hardware theory but this book spends more time on the instructions on how to install individual hardware devices which is good if you lost the manual for the device but is not needed for the exam. This Book Doesn't Cut It
This text fails to prepare readers for the Server + exam.It contains some misspellings and inconsistencies here and there, but I really began to worry when answers to some of the practice test questions directly contradicted the text, such as the maximum throughput of a ATAPI-4 device.The text says 33MB/sec, but the practice test answer is 66MB/sec.The text also contains pages and pages of codes particular to individual brands of controllers and operating systems.Also, the term ?Windows 98? is mentioned countess times throughout the text, although it is (obviously) not a NOS.Read more
