Good but not enough for 70-029
I purchased this book with the 70-029 exam in mind. Dislike other reviewers I didn't have any experience in Microsoft SQL Server, I was migrating from the AI/X DB2 world. This book is superficial in important aspects like index tunning and distributed queries. I finally had to adopt a different strategy based on sample tests and Microsoft Books On Line to pass the 70-029 with a less than satisfactory 755 mark.

Almost perfect
It should have 4.5 stars. This book is great for learning everything you need to know for getting SQL Sever 7.0 up and running (and I mean running not walking). This book is a well structured course that takes you through all the way for implementing databases on SQL Server. The only con I found is that It promotes Client-server arquitecture and has no mention on n-tier system (except for the beginning where it's barely mentioned). But at the end this is a very good book for learning SQL 7 administration .

Not Perfect, But It Beats Whatever Is In Second Place
Everything the other reviewers have said is true.Regardless, I looked for something better and came back to this book.Today I passed 70-029 and added an MCDBA to my MCSE.Be prepared to be tenacious with this material.It took me a year of catch-as-catch can study.This book should be your main study material with Transcender exams your proof of understanding.However, if you're just starting, go directly to SQL 2000 and skip SQL 7.0.From a job perspective, the best part of SQL is that it's in demand, and there aren't many people who can pass the exam. ... Good content; difficult to extract from theorems and lemmas
In its totality, this book has some very good content.The GLD is a great tool for practitioners.However, the summarization of materials is very poor and the authors lack applied knowledge.For the GLD, there are several unnecessary pages of lemmas, theorems, and proofs.These might be of interest to the mathematics researcher but to no one else.

What the "Doctor Ordered".
I do a great deal of number mashing especially for time series data. Although a Gaussian assumption is typical for a variety of reasons the really interesting stuff (IMHO) is where K.F.G.'s theory drops the ball. The GLD and its variations is very flexible in 'fitting' distributions. The exposition in this book has sufficient clarity as well as numerous examples. It is definitely slanted towards applications although there is sufficient theory that a strict empiricist can confuse themselves if they so choose. The theory is presented in a manner that I was able to 'translate' it into an EXCEL/VB application. The examples were sufficient to provide checks on the translation. Some code is also included in the book but it is for an application I do not use. Also, there are extensive tables of 'nominal' lambda values given various moments and/or quantile representations. ... In short, IMHO, the GLD should be in every numerical toolbox and the book should be on one's shelf. Good Stuff! ... Read more

You can try out this book..
With this book i've entered client/server programming and i can say i've learned a lot. The reason i gave 3 stars is,1) this book is quite old and only describes delphi 2 and 1 2) it does not give a lot about servers otherthan interbase 3) the Author is not a delphi expert (he is clipperorianted) so i think the delphi code is not perfect. and... 4) the cd-romgiven with the book is rather useless.. it has 5 chapter's code (total 18chaps.) and you have to edit some of the code in order to make themwork.. from theory to practice
Joseph D. Booth does a pretty good job explaining the fundamentals ofdatabase designing, most of which i'd already knew, but i wish i had thisbook when i was learning them. he explains normalization in 4 pages, theno'nonsense way.Read more

Excellent book
It is really sad that a serious piece of work like this book doesn't get the deserved appreciation. Five years ago, I started my first steps with SQL-Server 2000 using this book and I admire it deeply and I am very thankful for the authors' efforts. It is true I had to scratch my head 10 times an hour, but this had nothing to do with the writing style, the book is full of information, ideas, design guide lines and I had to keep up.

More than a Specification
I put off buying this for about a year because I was fooled by the title. Think of it as a primer on how to use Jini the way the people who developed Jini intended (rather than as a spec). That makes it very useful. Not ideal for someone who is considering using Jini and wants an overview, but a great "second book" on Jini. Similar to Keith Edwards' Jini "Example by Example".

not bad, but...
The book gives pretty good Jini overview, but it's just that: overview. Don't expect any code examples. Also there is a lot of repetition where the author goes over the same points in different chapters.

Authoritative yet simple to understand
Authoritative yet simple to understand "Jini technology: An Overview" provides very authoritative yet simple to understand language in introduction chapters. Graphics and examples are well presented with relevant and realistic examples. Dry as Dust
This is a very, very boring book to read, despite being well organised and set out. Admittedly the material isn't exactly scintillating, but a bit of effort to make the exercises even a little bit challenging would have beenwelcome. Also: Useful only with other resources
This book is a good place to start studying for exam 70-127. It breaks down the exam objectives nicely into separate chapters, and touches on most of the material that you'll need. However, there is no way nearly enoughinformation to prepare you sufficiently for the exam. Good layout, no depth

This is a great book for a beginner of SQL Server 2000 and XML. Starts off from scratch and walks you thru every aspect of XML and building a complete XML enabled web pages. Make sure you buy the 2nd Edition
Most of the reviews here seem to relate to the first edition (which was admittedly kind of short). The book has been updated, and the second edition covers new stuff like XSD Schemas, Diffgrams, SOAP Virtual Names, and all the other SQLXML 3.0 features. I found the book really useful, and easy to read. The examples are great and the concepts are all well explained. Definitely worth buying if you're planning to use SQL Server's XML functionality. ... Awesome beginers book
I had no clue what is a com object. All I know was how use com or ocx object. For some project, I have to add com callbacks. This books explains clearly and one baby step at a time. I strongly recommend this book to anybody who is intereted in learning any thing about COM/DCOM

My most tattered tech book
I own many books on the subject on COM/DCOM. I bought this one days after it was first published in December 1998. While my other COM books are pristine, this one is tattered and torn with pages falling out. I keep it within reach at all times. When I can't find it, I panic. Whenever I'm stumped, I grab it and within a few minutes, I'm back on track. It is not a theoretical dissertation which is why I like it. If you want to spout COM jargon, buy Don Box. If you want to get work done, buy this one.

Fairly useful
If you want to write the COM equivalent of a "Hello World" program, this book will show you how to do it very simply.It also provides a basic overview of the most important COM topics (threading,callbacks, connections points), but the coverage is generally on the lightside.The book works as a readable and succinct introduction to COM, butthose seeking greater mastery of the subject will have to lookelsewhere.Read more

A nostalgic look at life before intranets
I recently picked this book up second-hand and found it to be a quite enjoyable read. I only wish it was current, for the modern marketplace needs more books like it. Incredible, Unbeatable, Fantastic
You cannot imagine the things this book provide. I was invited to prepare a lecture to introduce some Cobol developers to the C/S world. I took 10 days to read the book and 2 weeks after the lecture, we observe that allthat guys aren't justtalking different. Most important; they are THINKINGdifferent. This is the real benefit. Congratulations to the authors. Theirapproach, their style and their humor are great.

Best written & organized computer I've read yet!
The is the first time I've taken the time to write a review - and for a technology book 2 years out of date! I love the style and organization. This is a lot of very relevent information packed into 600 pages that willgive anyone new to client/server architectures a great understanding of themarket(s). Take a look at the table of Contents to see what I mean. Andtrust me, it's not ..For Dummies drivel. The author's "soapboxes"(mostly predictions) are great reading for where they were right on (mostof the time) and just close (e.g. CORBA). Too big for a reference, but generally well structured
At just over 6cm (2.5 inches), it's a thick, heavy, book and the spine bends alarmingly as you read it. Despite this it's surprisingly readable, but I wouldn't want to carry it about with me. Won't teach you how to code it..but a good reference book

not for beginners
Deploying Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 is- as it says- written by their consultants. The book therefore deals with large scale deployment issues - the sort of thing they would get sent to, as well as reading a bit likeedited highlights from Technet. Indeed some of the sections can be foundpublished separately on the standard Microsoft forums that theirconsultants provide input for. Single server sites with no externalconnectivity may find a lot of content superfluous. The detail on how toproject manage an Exchange rollout, from scaling servers, to the merits ofdifferent connectors toperformance issues, is very useful: the hugesection on migrating Lotus Notes less so. There is a chapter devoted todescribing the rollout out documentation that needs to be created in alarge enterprise, although no MS Project template on the accompanying CDwhich would have been particularly useful. The book is still very useful ifyou are looking for a check list approach to putting in and maintainingExchange. The discussion of the different possible clients, and inparticular Outlook Web Access (OWA) gives an insight into how Microsoft aredirecting theirclient server messaging effort. Well worth the effort
I found the exposition in parts of this book quite poor. The prose is often pretty cryptic, there were some typographical errors that led me down detours while I tried to work through the details, so it took a lot of work (for me at least) to figure out some of the steps. The fact that a lot of the examples are of "toy" problems doesn't help see how the framework developed could be used for anything.
A framework for studying information content
In his book, The Situation in Logic, Jon Barwise wrote, "...it has turned out that one of the most important notions of topology has been that of a homeomorphism, a function from one space to another that respects nearness relations in an appropriate way. I think that something similar is going to happen here. I suspect that we are going to find ourselves studying 'infomorphisms,' maps from one information space to another that preserve information. But before we can define these maps, we need to understand the basic structure they need to preserve....I am currently working on such a framework."
Not enough juice for the squeeze
Impressive formalization of information flow via mathematics and logic, but in the end it's not clear if this subject holds any practical value. For, in practice, the model of information flow always requires a priori working models of the phenomena under consideration before the principles of information flow can be put to use. For example, consider currency fluctuations as information about some nation's economy. You can model this using Barwise's scheme, but doing so doesn't bring anything to one's understanding that we didn't already have from economics. No real clarification on what information is, either (although there's a lengthy discussion of this at the outset). Requires a fairly good working knowledge of set theory and basic formal logic.
