A good book
This is a good book in the field of distributed computing, but it is very mathematically oriented. It concentrates on impossibility proofs and lower bound proofs. I advise people new to this material to read a more descriptive book before reading this one

well-written, in-depth overview of distributed computing
I used this book for teaching an under-graduate primer course in distributed computing. The book is readable, coherent, well-structured and very efficient as a textbook. It strikes a good balance between the sea ofdetails and the basic principles. I am familiar with the core of this booksince it was a collection of lecture notes (alas, no longer available).It's a pity that some important topics have been omitted from the bookversion (e.g., Gallager, Humblett, Spira alg). There are some minor errorsand imperfections in pseudocodes and exercise definitions which are alittle bit annoying. That's why I'm giving this book four points and notfive. Bottom line: I would recommend this book as a course textbook.

Terse prose fraught with errors and omissions
I've struggled to read this text, since it contains many very recent results distilled into intelligently organized chapters. Unfortunately, even though this book is intended for a savvy audience, the text is oftentoo detailed and technical, while important "big picture"intuition is never relayed. Frequent errors in the algorithms and proofs,ranging from simple subscript swaps to more subtle errors in logic to the(rarer) complete lack of logic make this a difficult book to recommend. Some People Never Learn
Micro$oft is famous for its ability to push out new development technologies. The reason behind this planned obsolesence is obvious, every time they come out with something new people will have to open their wallets to "keep up." My best computer book of 1999 so far !!!

tough patterns
Patterns are one of the key concepts to emerge in computing in the 90s. But if you read a typical book on patterns, the issue of remoting patterns often gets scant coverage. In many ways, as this particular book by Voelter et al makes clear, the problems can be far harder than for a software package running on one machine.

Read the free SAP help instead
This is basically a poor rewrite of the on-line SAP documentation. There is nothing to learn from this book. I have found that all of these "Administering" books from Que are waste of paper. Spend you money elsewhere.

Not enough description
The book is not so informative who would like to understand the detailed functions of SAP PP module. The book contains no picture or screen shot. It's dealt with various functions but it doesn't seem to be enough.

Big job, great results
As far as I can see these guys have made a big part of job about description of PP customizing and implementation. I am a PP consultant, and I find out a lot of very useful tips concerning this part of SAP R/3. Anintegration with CO and MM has also been described. Best practical book for distributed systems (that I could find)
I got this book because I have been a fan of Garg's Elements of Distributed Computing ever since I first read it.Concurrent and Distributed Computing in Java seems to be really great buy. It has a very strong theoretical foundation, but the emphasis seems to be on writing distributed programs and getting them to work. If you are a theory lover I wouldnt recommend ths book, but if you like implementing stuff then you will definitely like this book. The range of topics covered is quite comprehensive given the size of the book.

I had this book, but I sold it on eBay
I bought this book last year and I could not believe what a mess the book was. There was no structure, no information, total mess. I tried to figure out what kind of method the author(s) used for coming up with a table of contents, but failed. If you see this on eBay, don't waste your money. There are a lot of copies floating around from India as that seems to be the only place where this is printed now.

A waste of good money
I think this author must have been given the title without knowing anything about SAP. It is a total disaster, nothing flows, no information, nothing. Save your money and take a SAP MM consultant out for dinner. You will get more information and you get food too.

Alright - I guess
Before I ever even thought of installing ISA, I read the book from cover to cover.Once completed, I installed ISA and referred back to the book for additional guidance.I'm still looking for the additional guidance. Puh-leeze! Reads like a Microsoft reviewer's guide.

Useless in 1999, a total waste of money in 2005
As most other readers have elaborated, the book has little or no real substantive material concerning the actual building of a beowulf. Everyone knows Myrinet is better than gigabit ethernet, bu HOW MUCH better for a given class of problems? For any problem???
Broad introduction to PC clusters
A "Beowulf" is the concept of using a network of low cost personal computers for distributed processing. The book doesn't specify a particular configuration. The author describes the three fundamental parts of a Beowulf system: node hardware, network hardware, and parallel software applications. Three chapters explain how to use the message passing interface (MPI) standard to distribute the work for a program executing on multiple nodes. An example MPI program for sorting is presented. The features of the Linux operating system are covered in Chapter 4 since Linux is a common choice for Beowulf clusters.

Excellent final user manual
In few words: If you are not a SAP consultant (and you are not expected to be so) and you need to take up working on SAP as a final user next monday: read this book. On monday, this easy to read book, will allow you to showoff as an experienced SAP user. The explantions "on the screen"showed by the book let you directly to the outcome you are looking for: toeasily perform usual tasks in order entering, price updating, productionplanning, and so on.

By the time I finished CHAPTER 6 (no worries, they are all very short chapters), I feel as if I have used SAP! It's amazingly simple (yet comprehensive) in its explanation and you don't need to be a technologicalbuff to understand SAP/ this book! If you are the kind of people who wish to download source code as it first appears on the web and if you are the kind of people in a hurry to get into the act with all the issues as soon as possible, then this book is for you. Should really be called "Win32 Enterprise Primer"
The title of this book is deceiving. Writing enterprise software for Win32 involves a lot of COM based technology. This book is an excellent introduction for all these technologies provided that the person already has some fundamental knowledge of basic COM (Hence the"Professional" in the title). I have not seen a better book outthere that both addresses the technologies AND has working samples of thosetechnologies. Most COM/DCOM/COM+ books out there today start with rehashesof Dale Rogerson's Inside COM book... I am tired of seeing all the books out there that hasthe exact same explanation of connection points, the exact explanation ofIUnknown, and basically the exact same 3 introductory chapters!. LearningCOM is a two-pronged process. First, you must be able to get comfortablewith the technology (hence, Rogerson's book), then you have to learn theservices built around the technology (This book does that!). I can see whythis book got such poor reviews, because those people reading the book werenot ready for the onslaught of information in this book (believe me,there's more useful information in these 400+ pages than there is in most600-1000+ page COMeverything books). ...
