Is COM or DCOM or COM+ still relevant?
The Component Object Model (COM) was introduced by Microsoft in 1993 to solve several problems.The leading problem was the inability to reuse code because class encapsulation was incomplete.Therefore certain implementation details of methods inside a class could inadvertently become exposed and exploited by some users and not by others.This made changing the implementation problematic.The underlying concept of COM is to make it possible to design and deploy software components much as electronic devices can be built from resistors, capacitors and inductors.You can safely replace a resistor of a certain number of ohms with a like resistor and be absolutely certain the replacement resistor will function identically to the replaced resistor.With components that act like black boxes and perform well defined functions in undocumented ways, you are well on your way to having replaceable software components.Next came the problem of versioning where a component would retain all of its previous functionality yet add some new ones.Users of the old version would not enjoy the benefits of the new version yet would function perfectly with the new version.Users of the new version would function with the old version after deciding the new version was unavailable and degrading their expectations.Versioning is carried out through unique 128-bit integer identifiers called Globally Unique IDs.Then COM goes a bit crazy with concepts like apartments and non-stack, non-heap special memory areas for passing across communications link and special types called variants that must be used in place of familar types.For example, a CString becomes a BSTR in COM.A COM object is instantiated through a special API call which returns a pointer to an interface through which other methods can be located and called.The housekeeping rules include careful reference counting so that unused objects can be removed from memory when the reference count goes to zero.On the whole, COM solves many problems yet is extremely cumbersome.No doubt, many careers have been made becoming expert with COM.Luckily, COM has been functionally replaced with the .NET framework which offers all of the advantages of COM with none of the muss or fuss.COM will be with us for a long time since major products are written using COM to include core business applications at some of the world's largest enterprises.I avoid COM as much as possible because I think it is ugly even though it serves a purpose.I am happy because there is an alternative.So, if you want to learn COM, by all means buy this book.But know that the technology is over a decade old and is slowly on its way out of favor.

I wish I had read this book earlier, Whenmost of the books dealt with a lot of theory, this is one book which makes you feel like you handled a real-life project.The sample Programmeis very generic and shouldinterestone and all, He delves systematically into the subject. If one wereuncomfortable with MIDL, I suggest he/she go thro' this book and come outall the wiser. I have yet to see a book which deals with conversionproblems and solutions while converting a client-server model to a webmodel. A few things I found lacking were examples on threaded apartmentsand surrogates. But I give it full marks still because the parts coveredare given such a nice treatment. ... Read more

A good book for high level description of the structure of Sybase System 11. When concerning details, there are many places the explanations are confusing. Pretty often two or more contradiction view of points appear inthe same page. Considering the lack of good Sybase books, I would like togive this one a favorable recommendation, but don't expect too much.

Extremely well written
I purchased three things to help me prepare for the 70-029 exam:This book, the Exam Cram Book, and Transcender.The Exam Cram is garbage, but this book consistently presents the material in an accurate and logical fashion.It fully explains the concepts to the degree that fosters understanding as well as retention.Concept explanations are followed up by numerous examples and it's written in a way that makes a relatively dry subject interesting.It's impossible to go wrong with this book either as a reference or as a study guide.

Great Resource
I have been developing applicaitons for a number of year now with Access 97 and have many books I have used.This book has become my most recommended.I have found many books on Access to be either too basic or too advanced for me.This book talks about basic concepts and then adds enough advanced information that almost anyone could learn something from it.The concepts are explained in a very understandable way.I wish I had bought this years ago!

Client/Server Programming for Access 97 is a must have for anyone who develops serious applications in Access 97. It contains clear, practical guidelines to create and polish client/server applications using Access 97.I recommend this book to both novices and experts since it impossible tobelieve that there will not be something of value for anyone who reads it.It can be read cover to cover or used as a reference. As a footnote, I mustalso add that the paper quality is unusually good and the layoutscompletely avoid descriptions on one page and diagrams on the other.

Excellent coverage of the entire topic
I just finished the book and I loved it! It does a very nice job of covering the entire topic in enough depth to provide real answers, while leaving plenty of room for exploration. I'll be downloading some of theexamples soon. I particularly liked the "Paired-Pages" arrangement wherethe right page summarizes and supplements the material presented on theleft. It delivers the concepts in convenient bite-size pieces withimmediate, built-in reinforcement. This is forexperienced ABAPers only
I was new to ABAP and went haywire reading this book.This book is someone who already knows ABAP/4 for atleast 6 months or so.Even people with programming background trying to learn ABAP won't get anything from the this book.Infact one gets overwhelmed.THIS IS NOT YOUR FIRST ABAP BOOK !!!!

Very analytical. Long sentence, long paragraph writing. It is helpfull only if you read it from the first to last page. Not a reference. More like bed time book

Covers a lot with tons of Acronyms - Confusing
There is a lot of information. Unfortunately there are hundreds of acronyms, most of them specific to Tuxedo programming.It becomes tedious boring reading as more later terms are described in older terms/acronyms.There are some diagrams but I did not find them particularly useful.Mostly architectural descriptions.Not a lot of working examples.Again, the reading is dry, but I'm not sure there is a better alternative out there on this topic.

An illution of simplicity

Comprehensive
Jim Maloney covers allot of ground and he does it without being cute, like some other authors. It sounds like he's been dealing with students in many seminars. This book is a very good introduction to many important subjects. It's a great place to start learning about VB6.

Weak in the hands on lab(s).
The book is well written and reads easily however the lab is one long program on a video store.I have found that books with these examples tend to get bogged down.Using "one long program" instead of different examples with each chapter, makes it difficult for the reader to skip a chapter because you have to pick up the program where the skipped chapter ended.If you are one who likes the one lab/program, then I think you will like this book better than I did. Otherwise try the Wrox series.

This book is a breath of fresh air, not only because it's chock full of real-world examples, but because it's written clearly, concisely and doesn't take up 3 feet of bookshelf space. Perhaps more importantly, it also manages to explain the kind of subject matter that is usually reserved for experienced programmers, but in a way that a novice will embrace and understand.Read more

Being a techie, he naturally lapses into bursts of dense technospeak once in awhile, but most of the time he explains things in a chatty, easy-to-understand manner. He peppers his explanations with real-life examples and touches on political pitfalls, rambling through various technologies and pausing occasionally to gripe about a program error or a common mistake that people make--but it's a friendly talk, informative and at your level. A Good Resource
This text does an excellent job covering the topics included in the exam.Many of the end-of-chapter practice questions were nearly identical to the (pre-adaptive) exam.Also, the structure of all the practice questions are identical to the exam.I also liked how the text regularly alerted the reader to test related distinctions. Having taken over 14 certification exams I can say that I have never seen one as odd as the Server+. Fortunately I passed and for that I was grateful. I really didnt want to take it again. For Learning, NOT for memorizing
Passed on first try Friday but just barely. Used only this book and truly read it from cover to cover. Also used some transcender sample questions and another Certification Bible CD for quizzing. The actual exam was harder than any practice questions I used. CompTIA's wordings were inverted and they actually test for thorough working knowledge rather than making sure I memorized any questions. All the info needed is contained in this fine prep book but a complete understanding of what I read was mandatory. Before studying this or the Server+ Certification Bible, I highly recommend, as I did, reading the real Bible. Then you'll have everything needed to pass the exam! ... Read more

Good Perspective on Securing Web Services Apps
Mastering Web Services Security provides a valuable enterprise perspective on building secure Web Services applications. Rather than focusing on a single technology like .NET or Java, the book provides useful real-world guidelines for building Web Service based systems that use many different products. good for developers of complex secure WS applications
The book does a great job explaining how to build non-trivial WS systems that are secure from end to end. Instead of limiting the material to descriptions of SOAP-related technologies and their security (this is what the other books I've read on WS security do), the authors first explain how to secure quickly a simple homogenous (M$-based) WS application, then point out the problems with such a simple-minded approach, and then devote the rest of the book to the question of securing complex heterogeneous WS applications by putting all necessary pieces together. At the title I was impressed
But after digging into the content I was forced to re-evaluate my first impression.I looked to this book to guide me through numerous pieces and choices of server load balancing on a fair but balanced agenda.What I found was far too much information that was simply digested and reformatted from vendor and free areas.
Needs more examples
This book gives an organized but purely descriptive overview of server load balancing and should be helpful to anyone who is approaching the subject for the first time but does not require quantitative assessments of the different methods for doing server load balancing. It is written for the network administrator, but anyone, including network managers should find it helpful. Network engineers may find the treatment too qualitative, but it could be supplemented by more rigorous material if needed.
Disapointing Altogether
this is the first O'reilly book that I've been disapointed with! Too many purposeless examples and some configs can be downloaded from vendors web site...am also wondering about the many PETA references for a load balancing book (just off topic) ... Read more
