Excellent book as a primer to distributed computing
This book is a very readable introduction to parallel and distributed computing.It presents concepts well, and offers enough examples to allow one to make sure they have a firm grasp on what is being presented.It is NOT a textbook.It is not full of code, or detailed descriptions of exactly how to implement a parallel/distributed system in a given situation.Those already expert in the field or those seeking low-level detail and code should look elsewhere.I recommend this book to everyone else.

Exellent Book
Very well written. I recommend this book to others that need to work with remoting.

Great Book for beginners
I have worked with C# for some time now. I really wanted to learn about .NET Remoting and I did not have much idea about building distributed systems. This book gives you a step by step approach and it does require you to have some basic knowledge in any OOP language. Knowing some C# would bebeneficial. Read more

Greatly eases Jini development
For several years, Sun has promoted Jini as a means of developing Java-based distributed computing systems. As a practical matter, these systems are often mobile, and hence wireless. Think perhaps of the increasingly powerful and ubiquitous cellphones, PDAs and laptops. Less familiar to the public, but even more pervasive, are products using embedded microprocessors like cars and home appliances. Typically, most distributed systems have less memory and power than conventional computers, and their network connections may be intermittent. Developing applications to run under these conditions is tough, and Jini tries to make it practical. But in the last two years the pace of Jini development seems to have slowed. A rival open source approach, JXTA, has quickly grown and captured a lot of mindshare amongst developers. Its proponents say that it is far easier to learn and use. Naturally, Jini enthusiasts strongly disagree.Read more

One for practitioners
This book fills a niche nicely. I cheerfully recommend it to applied researchers who, like me, learned their statistics haphazardly in the context of a discipline like economics or biology. The book works rather like a cookbook should, offering up detailed recipes for a great variety of problems, while the software delivers tools which tackle those problems in a no-nonsense style. Would any of this appeal to true, or budding, affionados of mathematical statistics? Hmmm.
Powerful software great for learning and experimenting
The bottom line is that this is a very well written book, but more importantly the associated software is *very powerful*. The software is a *symbolic* solver for mathematical statistics, not merely a numerical solver. You will appreciate the great value of this book and software once you understand this difference. Great if you want to learn, experiment and apply mathematical statistics. I highly recommend it.

mathStatica, a software bundled with this book, is probably a very good software.I was not very happy with the way the authors and the publisher structured the mathStatica license, particularly with newer and improved versions of Mathematica and the limited use of the software. outdated but good
this book is a pretty typical dummies guide.i haven't taken the test yet so i can't say much.it's outdated now but since the new versions of server+ preparation guides are not yet available this is probably as good a test preparation book as you can get.i used the dummies guide for a+ certification and it was okay.lots of overlap between the a+ guide and the server+ guide--good luck to you, and good luck to me.

Needs an overhaul!
Best used as a starter or final prep but needs somthing more heavyweight for the exam.

Several content errors found.
I will also add that I emailed BOTH Ron Gilster AND the dummies press asking if any erratta was posted, and as of today, 2 months later, I have received NO REPLY from either party. This is most unfortunate considering that the book is well written, catchy, and makes a very dry subject a lot more interesting. So shame on the technical editors. ... Read more

Total trash. This is one of those books where the publisher has packed in as many pages as possible to make it seem impressive. It is completely unreadable and not even useful as a reference book.

Only "Good Overview" of J2EE.
The title of the book is impressive and is certain to fool many a serious developer hopeful of "Building" J2EE systems with the help of this book. It will be painful to find out that this books gives only aoverview of the technologies that comprise J2EE. Best complete J2EE book I found
I had been looking for a book that gave me most of the information I needed for J2EE and server side coding and I found it in this book. No other book that I could find provided me with all of the material I needed for server side Java. The material is thorough and it is loaded with examples that use BEA weblogic and Oracle. There are some topics that I can do without like DCOM and much of the CORBA chapters. Although if you really want the complete picture of other technologies you might find that information interesting too. I'd rank it a 4.5, but Ill give them the extra half point for the effort. ... Great overview of distributed Oracle
I found this book to be very useful for understanding the concepts of database links and SQL*Net for Oracle databases.The general overview was also quite good.

Short chapters offer the necessary information.
I think this book is more suitable for people working with databases -distributed or not- than for students. It is useful for distributed databases managers to have a guide and source of new ideas, and for nondistributed databases managers to start to think about the way they couldapply this to their own organization. A must have book with free software too!
The author provides good practical coverage of queuing concepts and then goes on to show how to use queuing models.
Solid, readable and covers topics not found elsewhere
Although this book's full value will be realized if you understand the C programming language (he uses source code it illustrate points throughout the book and provides a C library for performance analysis on the accompanying disk), anyone with good math skills will gain much from this outstanding book. This book is a mind reader... Its the best.
The common mistake everyone does while learning COM+ is that they try to pickup the syntactical details to write a good COM+ component. But trust me you will never learn COM+ that way. There is more theory in COM+ than code and this book exactly does that. It gives you the inside scoop and at the same time doesn't overload you with details. The best part about this book is that the author never make you feel bad for YOUbeing a VB programmer. When you complete this book, you will feel good about yourself and have more confidence in your work. A good, specific angle on the topic
Good book.As one reader noted above, it seems aimed at providing background information rather than how-to guidance.And this is a good thing.It's definitely worth reading if you're interested in broadening your understanding of COM+ architecture and its underpinnings.

Excellent book- must read for serious COM+ programmer
I have huge respect for the author and the knowledge shared with us in this book.I love the aspect of "WHY is this the way it is?" for every chapter in the book.I would rather know first how things work beehind the scenes so I can then develop against that knowledge.This is definitely for someone with at least 2-3yrs of good experience with VB6 and MTS.I was able to step one level up in COM+ architecture and become advanced programmer/architect just by finishing this book.Excellent! ... After looking at all the JINI books available except the O'Reilly one, I found this book to be best....by far! Lots of material and code
I used this book in parallell with other books. A complete, detailed, well-written book
Mr. Li starts out with a section focusing on advanced RMI and CORBA, and how they relate to Jini. The CORBA section includes examples for building a Java client/server using the ORB that comes with the JDK, as well as using a C client on Linux with the free ORBit ORB. An excellent overview of CORBA for people who have never used it or simply haven't used it with Java. Read more

A well written book--a nice resource
The book is a great resourse for beginners.The book has an excellent introduction on client/server technology and object-oriented programming.The authors did an excellent job to keep it simple and easy to follow atthe same time very effectively explained some very complicated concepts. A Very Good Book
The book is very good, very easy to read and easy to follow. In a few days you would be able to retrieve and update data using ADO. Highly recommended, especially for beginners.

Buy it. These guys really understand ADO 2.5
I was the tech editor of this book, so I've read every word. The authors dig deeply into ADO 2.5 and get into under-used but fascinating areas of the technology such as ADOX, Shapes, Streams and COM+. As I said in thecover quote, these guys really do understand the technology - they aren'tjust regurgitating the Microsoft documentation. Also, check out the hugeamount of very valuable code in the book. Most of it is in Visual Basic forApplications which can be adapted easily for Active Server Pages or regularVB. Although the book is not designed as a reference book, I often use itto look up ADO syntax that I've forgotten. This is a great book to learnADO 2.5 and to apply it in real world scenarios. ... Great Overview Without Getting Bogged in Details
One of my long standing complaints about computer software books is that they so often eliminate the first forty pages or so that explain just what this software is and what is supposed to do. This book (at 606 pages it's a lot more than forty pages) is essentially the front end description that explains what SAP ERP is and what it si supposed to do.
What happened in the new edition?
This edition appears to be about 1/3 the size of previous editions; and refers to a fairly old version of SAP... even though this was released in Dec 2005.
Poor Book, barely skims the surface
This book provides no real usable knowledge about SAP. There is absolutely no information on some areas, such as CATT's.And the areas that have some meat have only bologna. ... Read more

Helps if you look at the content
As a note to A reader from LLNL, CA., yes this book covers DCOM (which is out of date),BUT it is primarily about building DISTRIBUTED applications using COM with Visual C++ 6. Remarkably *DEAD* technology
Micro$oft is famous for its ability to push out new development technologies. The reason behind this planned obsolesence is obvious, every time they come out with something new people will have to open their wallets to "keep up." Exceptionally Understanding/Informational/Instructional
I have read multiple books relating to COM/DCOM topics and I find that most of them tend to be very hard to follow/comprehend.Jim tends to re-emphasize his points so that you don't have to turn back the page to continue following along.In my mind I am asking a question and low and behold the answer is on the next line.Read more
