5-0 out of 5 stars Good exam preparation support!
I used this book in addition to RedHat's instructor led training, and managed to pass the test on my first try with a score of over 90%!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the RHEL 3 exam
Having been in a management position for a while I was a bit rusty and felt I didn't have the current hands on experience required to sit this exam directly.I used this book as prep for the 4 day Red Hat Boot camp leading up to the RHCE exam.It covered the topics required for the exam quite well, despite some obvious typos (Whatever you read, you should read critically anyway. IMHO)
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Exam Prep
I wish I could say I had finished the book and passed the RHCE, but I am still a month or two away. Still, I have advanced my Linux knowledge significantly and am having a blast. Of the 6 or so Linux books I own, this is the best and should have been the first. If you are thinking about taking the RHCE or are just wanting to make Linux admin easier and/or more straightforward, then this book is a must have. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars an up to date book
a good up to date book on linux but author devotes to much time and space and chapters covering servers which the ordinary desktop user wont use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slightly above average resource
This book has quite a bit of good information, but if I see yet another Linux book devote an entire chapter or more to using Mozilla Firefox, I think I'll scream.Yet it continues to happen.Sure, the applications are part of the operating system, but those of us looking for a good OS resource want more meat and less potatoes, so to speak. This book does take you through the steps to setting up most everything that the beginner to intermediate user would want to set up - on their workstation. Most of the content focuses on using the GUI, but at times also gives the command line interface equivalent. If you're looking for a resource to help you find the RHEL/FC equivalent of what you've been doing in another distro, or another UNIX variant, it's not a bad choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book mainly for intermediate level programmer.

4-0 out of 5 stars securing your system
Kuo and Beland help the sysadmin who might be new to SUSE Linux. Conceptually, you can think of the book as two interwoved parts. The first part is explaining generic linux, or even unix, operations. Applicable to a Red Hat or Solaris machine, perhaps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
I bought this book to learn about SUSE Linux 10 (as opposed to 9 or any other version). While I realize there is a significant amount of similarity between the versions, a book titled "SUSE Linux 10" should explain the differences.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The book appears as if it tries to cover too much too quickly, and as if it was released in haste. There are conceptual errors as well as factual errors.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough information
The information presented in this book seem to have been written inhaste. The topics come to an abrupt end without much explanation. At many places, it merely points to other resources without even presenting some brief discussion. The section on kernel compilation is very short. No information is provided on selection of options under "make xconfig" command. It seems to be a very basic introduction to SuSe Linux. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A practical guid to Red Hat?
I have read the other reviews of this book. All got to say is that I feel that most of them must have read a different book! I not completely new to Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise but I am no expert so I thought the book wouldbe very suitable for me how wrong can you be. I give you an example Samba very popular application. Can be difficult to setup with the in-built Fedora Firewall. The book chapter is useless in giving you a real tutorial on how to really get the program working it gives you a little bit of information than completel lets you down. This is only an example chapter after chapter are like this. My recommadation if you learning Linux buy an other Red Hat book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for its intended audience (Third Edition)
As a course book, this is simply wonderful. It is a step by step education in Linux (RH and FC, specifically) and it leaves out nothing of importance. The word "comprehensive" should have been in the title somewhere.
1-0 out of 5 stars Belongs in the Linux for Dummies line of publishing ...
With all due respect, this is trully a waste of your time if you are expecting to get info on Fedora Core. Page after page is burned on such trivialities as 'ls', and 'cat' commands; even how to delete a word or a line using an editor. In reality, this book has very little to say anything specific for Fedora. It may have a redeeming value as an intro to Linux for newbies...but flops in this respect as well; newbies will look at the title and continue browsing for other books. You can have mine for free if after reading this you are still considering buying it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Might as well buy the RHCE book by jang (4th edition)
I bought the RHCE book (jang 4th edition) and used it to study for the RHCE exam. Because the exam encompasses both the RHCT abd RHCE exam, i thought i could use the RHCT book as a way to refine skills geared strictly towards just the RHCT portion of the exam. This book really is just a subset (cut and paste) of the RHCE book from jang, with a very few changes. You are better off just getting the RHCE book by jang and using it to study for both the RHCT and RHCE. The skills you learn, although not super in depth, will force you to learn or relearn key concepts that will potentially be on the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just an Exam Cram
The rise of Red Hat has been marvelous to watch.Starting with a 'free' operating system, they have produced an integrated software system that rivals the big kid on the block. With this kind of success, comes more success. Now you see job ads for people who know Red Hat. And with this comes certifications. How do you prove that you've even typed 'ls' into your system.

5-0 out of 5 stars No experience necessary
I have been working in a Windows IT environment for over 7 years, but had no Linux experience except for installing it on a test machine (but then again, even a 5 year-old could install it since it's so easy). But I never had to work with it in an enterprise level until now.Without any solid experience with Linux and armed only with this book (and 7 years of "figuring it out" IT skills), I managed to get Redhat ES v3 running on an old server class machine with an older RAID controller.I even got it to talk to Windows clients AND the old HP-UX servers (I didn't have Unix experience either!).The boss was impressed! This is an excellent book that doesn't get annoying (like those Dummies books) or pretends to be a "Linux Admin book for Beginners" like that other book that's out there.I started with an older version of this book from the library, and this new version is even better. This book is a great investment and I'm glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right at my level
Now in its third edition along with a DVD that includes Full Fedora Core 4, the latest (as of 10/18/05). People have complained that this book (in its earlier editions) are too simplified and beginnerish. I guess then that I'm not enough of a guru to go to something more advanced.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Very good book with lots of information, but sometimes the author gets carried away with his so-called version of MAN pages. If you need more detail on some stuff, you will need to reference some other book or check online. The book did have some errors and wrong diagrams, just wished someone have proof read it better.... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A quick glaze over some good topics - but
I think a book costing this much money should provide in-depth coverage of the topics. This looks like a rush job to me and very sophomoric. How do books like this make it through production?
5-0 out of 5 stars Good "bible" for beginners and those who wish to solve most common problems easily
This book is definitly not intended for professionals, and definition of "bible" is questionable when book deals with big things such as Debian. Of course this book can't solve every possible problem or show you everything. In order to achieve that, it should have few thousands pages :) However, it will serve you well if you wish a complete guidance in installing debian on common pc platforms and configuring it. It will give you good practical understanding of all linux and debian specific things needed for fast start and will cover most of things you might want to do. Some things You can no expect from this book: this book won't teach you for instance how to build stealth internet server and cover detailed configuration of every aspect of it, it won't teach you how to become supreme administrator etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars For the beginners
I have been a Debian user for two years, and have used GNU/Linux for the past three/four years. I thought I would learn a great deal from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A series of easy lessons
Chris Brown's SUSE LINUX: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO NOVELL'S COMMUNITY DISTRIBUTIONis a very user-friendly, accessible Linux guide progressing logically and easily from initial installation to hardware support. SUSE is installed daily and favored for its ease of use and versatility: SUSE LINUX examines the operating system through a series of easy lessons which teach all the basics of setting up SUSE as either a desktop or server operating system.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide to SUSE Linux
This book is a highly useful guide to installing and using SUSE Linux. It is aimed at "The enthusiastic pilgrim...", and indeed meets many needs of a Linux beginner and user. The contents are well chosen and described.

5-0 out of 5 stars It solved my problems about SuSE
Yes, it was usefull, its becoming dirty 'couse i use it frequently. Sometimes id like to have more info about commands in commandline, but in general it gives you more than what you could expect from.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Depth
Initially, I was pleased with this book--it is helpful in getting started. But, now the issue for me is that it lacks some key topics, like how to kill a process. Searching the index turns up nothing for the following terms: kill, restart, named. There is nothing about day-to-day admin types of functions needed for process managment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices
It is surprising to find that a book on SUSE Linux 9 with 665 pages of small print (TOO small) contains so little useful information for someone like me--a Windows user wanting to migrate to SUSE Linux for home use. Most of the book covers topics too advanced for Linux beginners. For example, there are ten chapters on implementing network services, another four chapters on "SUSE Linux in the Enterprise", and six more on using the command line.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for all users
There are way too many computer book authors who simply do not know how to write. Bill McCarty is not one of these. He has written an erxcellet book that eplains debian on a very basic level. This is a good book because it delivers exactly what it promises to deliver. It is an introduction to linux and it encourages new users to "have fun" and "be patient." It is outdated, though. For Linux, a good book needs to be more recent that 2000 to be relevant. This book is older than that. The effective birthday of Debian was in 1993. Highly recommended book!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good first book
For an absolute beginner this is ok. However too much reliance is given to the How-to's and internet for problem solving, a PS2 mouse works with /dev/psaux which wasn't easy to find out. The installation guide is pretty good, you will appreciate it the first time you install linux, but if you enjoy playing and try different distro's you won't need it very quickly. The introduction to sysadmin is equally useful at a basic level for a home machine. So if you haven't tried linux this is as good a start as any I have read, but you only need one beginner's book, then i believe the Rute Manual which has now been printed is the way to go.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's ok, but could have been better...
While it's nice to have a book cover the Debian specific installation procedure, too much space was wasted on repeating instructions like "with the arrow key, highlight 'Ok' and hit the Enter key".Too much space in this book is taken up with these trivial instructions, over and over again, it becomes tedius to read.If we didn't have to read about hitting the arrow and Enter keys with every little step, this book otherwise has some useful Debian specific information in it.Too bad the book couldn't have been packed with more useful info and fewer instructions on how to highlight a menu item. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You can stop looking for other books!
2 years ago I was promoted to a tech. management position requiring me to administer several linux machines. Yes, I was a brand new to the world of linux and searched long and hard through book after book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Best for Linux newbie or end user not admin
Was looking for a book geared for RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 system admins looking for info on configuring RAID with mdadm, lvm2, and ended up with a book more geared for a desktop user more interested in games and novelties than serious system administration. I really don't think the book is geared toward Enterprise users and the word "Enterprise" should not be in the title. For what it goes over it does a good job but I was expecting more core unix admin information and examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for people starting out in Linux
This books pretty much covers it all. From networking, mysql and dns to gaming, video/audio, office tools, programming, etc. etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars DEFRAG FIRST
Very good book. The installation didn't go well at first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very different from the usual cutesy Dummies book
I was pleasant suprised, then delighted, to find that this was NOT the usual, repellently cutesy Dummies book, but a very complete, straighforward guide to SuSE Linux 10. Additionally, it's an A+ book for those who may be thinking about Linux but have been frustrated by their attempts to learn the basics and/or install one of the popular distributions unaided. Barkakati respects the reader's intelligence, but he doesn't assume too much. He starts easy and doesn't leap suddenly onto a higher level of technical complexity, as many authors of computer books do. A common complaint among those who dip a toe into Linux is that it's a technical nightmare. Barkakati does an excellent job of introducing new users to the world of the command line. As operating systems and applications have evolved, we've lost the best features of the DOS command line and text-based programs such as WordStar -- namely, power and speed. Barkakati gives the reader a gentle introduction to that "closer to the computer" world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Fedora Core 3
The book is good. It is well written and easy to follow. Using this book I was able to reclaim a partition on my laptop. I then reformatted the partition and installed fedora core 3 on my laptop with the dvd that came with the book. Every thing is working fine except my wireless card which does not seem to have a driver. But I followed the instruction in the book on how to obtain the driver and get it worked but I have not done it yet. Overall, the information in the book was very helpful and I do recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fedora Linux 3 Bible scores
I like the book as well as most of his other Linux books. Its very detailed and does not assume you are a guru.At the same time he does not talk down to the reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money for getting you started
Kudos to Mr. Negus for another great book! I have his book on RH7.2 and thought that it was a great. When I decided to move to Fedora this was the book I thought would be best. Another great guide to the OS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Red Hat Linux Reference Book
This book is ideal for those who work with Linux and want something handy to use as reference. It is extremely comprehensive and complete. This book gives enough detail on just about every facet of RH Linux that if it doesn't come right out and answer your questions, it will certainly provide you with enough specific info to get you pointed in the right direction. I wouldn't recommend this book for someone new to Linux as there are other books out there which lend themselves to teaching the fundamentals much more effectively (slower pace step-by-step books). However for people who know Linux and are looking for a comprehensive resource manual, you couldn't find a better book. A must have for anyone working with Linux in: tech support, system administration, application development, etc. Worth every penny!

4-0 out of 5 stars little depth but very broad
If you are experienced in UNIX-like OS, this is a good review.
3-0 out of 5 stars good for a beginner
I've been a Solaris admin for a while and am recently moving towards linux. The book looked fairly complete on a quick view at the book store. After owning it for a few months I find I can't find the answer to my more advanced questions in this book.So I'd say it is a good book for beginners, but not for someone that is looking for an advanced linux reference. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora, Fourth Edition
I found this book to be very readable and a good way of getting up to speed on Linux. The book: (i) guides you how to load Fedora onto your computer, (ii) describes how Linux works, and (iii) discusses Linux applications, networking and scripts. The author also touches on the Red Hat Enterprise version of Linux throughout the text. The Linux installation section is well written with plenty of screen shots showing the various screens during installation. The other sections are also very readable. The book comes with a couple of CDs containing Fedora Core1.A reader may wish to download a more recent version (Fedora 4 is available at the time this review was written). This book is a good springboard in getting into the Linux world with Fedora; however I think that a person will want to supplement this book with a reference on Linux (such as Linux in a Nutshell) in order to get a more detailed coverage on topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for what I was looking for...
In my quest to learn Linux, I've been working through the book Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora by Bill McCarty (O'Reilly). This is exactly what I was looking for in a learning guide.
3-0 out of 5 stars Can't rate because it did not meet my needs

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book,
This is a great book whether you've are an intermediate Linux user or a true novice. I had used Linux on and off but not really dove in to it like I had with MS Windows. After purchasing this book though I have completly migrated off of Windows and now use SUSE Linux full time. The book is great at using examples to help certain things stay in your head. I also like the way this book starts off teaching the Linux GUI (X) and then moves on to the command-line, most Linux books I've read are the complete opposite. Once you learn the GUI you move on to command-line which helps you stay focused on the book since the command line can get fustrating when first learning to use it. Great book, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginners guide
I am a computer nerd, and I've been using Suse for roughly a year now, so you would think this book would be beneath me.However, it is an entertaining read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't explain things in great detail
I tried this book and it was great until i started downloading files, I kept getting error codes. I'm thinking I did not have a file that i needed. I also read the chapter about playing dvd movies and online video not very helpful.every time you download something that some one mentions either on the web or in a not very well written book like this, there is either another file that you need or a conflict that has to be fixed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I need at this stage
I've been working with Novell Netware for many years and needed something to ease me into the linux side of things. It works well by taking all the services you know and love on the NW kernel and shows you how to get the equivalents running in linux.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
I have been a Novell dealer since the 80's.I also have extensive Unix (SCO) experience, though my Linux experience is much weaker.
