5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an excellent book!
This is by far the best book I have ever bought on Dreamweaver. I am a self-learner, and I have about ten books at all levels on Dreamweaver, starting from "dummies" to "beyond". In this book, the author goes through the laborious tasks of explaining the basic concepts first, and then follows these up with one or more step-by-step tutorial. He also provides a host of appropriate tips and "notes" such as "Power Users' Clinic", "Up to Speed", etc. that are very useful to a self-learner like myself. The videos are simply outstanding.I wish that there were more videos. I assume that the author will continue writing such books. How about a Flash 8 book, David?

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice program
I haven't gotten very far into the book, but I can already tell that this manual is very comprehensive. It is simple to use and explains everything thoroughly.I noticed that even though I did free shipping, the book arrived well before the approximate arrival date it gave me, which was nice.I would reccomend this book for anyone. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver 8 and Nac OS X
Good book, walks you right through each step of the way. Examples are good. Slight problem with the Mac OS X instructions, but workable. A good understanding of your computer system and operating system is suggested to help with some of the exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective, but needs a little tweaking....
Dreamweaver is a deceptively simple-appearing program, but is incredibly powerful and complex "under the hood". Thus, future users will need exceptionally well-prepared materials to learn it well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for starters

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring book
After reading some of the review for this book on this site, I question if these reviewer were sober when they wrote there reviews. The book is boring, and after a few chapters you'd maybe start looking for a new book. And if that CD breaks, from what i've been told, you'll have a hard time getting another one from the book company. I'd suggest you check out your local book store and take a look inside the book before you buy it; it would save u alot headache.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, step by step, walkthrough

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb book
For serious designers Dreamweaver is without doubt the best web design program out there. PHP is the most powerful server-side language available to date. I needed to produce my first shopping cart site... so I bought Cartweaver PHP -a cracking little value for money extension, but I needed to configure my machine. This book showed me, in plain English, how to install PHP on my computer (Mac or PC), how to set up a testing server on my own machine and how to install MySQL. It also taught me the basics of PHP and took me through some simple PHP exercises (e.g. form-to-mail) - it's not as difficult as you think! and if you're going to use commercial PHP scripts on your sites you should really have some understanding of what you are uploading to the server... it also taught me some very useful CSS tips and alerted me to some fantastic enhancements in Dreamweaver 8.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
When I buy a book support for that book in the way of a forum is essential. The Friends of Ed books have that and this is no let down. Mr.Powers will most likely answer your questions himself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I had to buy this book for a class, it is terrible. All the author does is have you go click here and drag this to go through the exercises with no explainations. It's a waste of time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book out there to learn Dreamweaver
I have taken several classes to learn Dreamweaver but still didn't handle to use Dreamweaver very well...until I found this book which answered all the questions I had to master Dreamweaver. This book is the best book out there so far for beginner; A must have.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Was Forced To Read This For A Class, and Will Never Be The Same Again
This has to be the worst book ever written. Do yourself a favor, and spare yourself from the pain. The author thinks it's cute to make little quips that a 3 year might think of and put little wink things behind them, you know what I mean ;). The problem is they just annoy you to no end. The other annoying thing is that it takes the author a page and half to say "Hit the Enter Key". He spends page after page talking of inane things, hawking other books, and making stupid, juvenile comments. The book is a laborious 700 pages long, an agonizing 700 pages long. I have noticed that they have fired the dweeb who wrote it, Garo Green (who I always imagined him as a pasty white, fat 50 year old geek-you'll see what I mean if you have the misfortune of being forced to use this book), and significantly shorten the book, even though Dreamweaver 8 has many more features. I write this with the full knowledge that I will be selling my copy of this at the end of the semester, and that this review will adversely affect my selling price, but the book is really that bad. Unless you need it for a course, do not buy it. I promise you will regret it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Creating your web master piece
What this book does in basic terms is walk you through the process of website conception to managing your website once it is on line and everything in between. It covers all of the information that you will need to get your site up and running. Some of the the subjects are covered very well like the use of CSS, adding graphics, flash animation, design elements, templates, HTML, Meta tags and the use of graphics. All subjects are covered in ample detail.
2-0 out of 5 stars Misses the mark.
I am new to web design but am pretty good with computers.I have been producing and editing music for fun for years. This book is dicey at best. There are good points, but overall it is hard to follow and gives a poor explaination of Dreamweaver's features.Hopefully, the author is better in the classroom than she is in this text or I feel sorry for her students.

    Editorial Review

Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 is the leading software tool for the creation of Web sites and other HTML interfaces. It's remarkably capable, able to deal intelligently with everything from fonts and images to JavaScript for client-side data validation and embedded Java applets. In most cases, Dreamweaver will save you time over hand-coding--and yield better-looking pages to boot. The program's learning curve, though, isn't trivial. That's why Read more

I have read this book cover to cover. You can read it in front of your computer and perform the tutorials or you can simple read an look at the illustrations. Both provide you with a very accurate experience. The online web site allows you to download all of the necessary files to perform your labs if you desire. It is simple, elegant, and well thought out book. You can't walk away from this book and not say that you did not truely learn to use Dreamweaver MX 2004. I struggled to learn this program, after reading the book, I have built several complex websites, complete with dynamic database integration. This book is that good!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not intended for the web design novice
I am completely new to web design and found this book extremely overwhelming. The series title, "Visual Quickstart Guide", appears to be aimed towards beginners such as myself, however it is probably aimed at people with experience with older versions of Dreamweaver looking to upgrade their knowledge. There is so much talk about the old dreamweaver, new ways of doing things etc. and I'm not really interested in that.Other clues that this book is not designed for a beginner is the lack of glossary (mentioned in another review) and the amount of space devoted to setting one's preferences of Dreamweaver. As a novice, how am I supposed to know what I prefer when I don't even know where to begin?

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing for the Novice
While I have a background in graphics programs, I'm entirely new to Dreamweaver. This book looked like it would be a sole resource. It wasn't.Too often terms are mentioned without definitions (a glossary would be a help).More than once a process was described without a basic first step that would seem obvious to experienced users, but only confused novice users.I wound up having to use other resources to make sense of this book.I wouldn't recommend it to first timers like myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and specific at the same time
This is a great book, though I have used DreamWeaver for several years, I wanted to see how DreamWeaver 8 was going to deal with CSS.I took the time to read most of the chapters, and picked up a lot of tips. The book is comprehensive and specific at the same time.Concepts are interlaced with keystroke instructions.Well worth the price and a great reference. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A reference book you'll want to keep close at hand...
Author Jeffrey Bardzell does a great job of explaining the ins-and-outs of ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP use within Dreamweaver 8 in MACROMEDIA DREAMWEAVER 8 WITH ASP, COLDFUSION, AND PHP: TRAINING FROM THE SOURCE.Not only does the book cover the subject matter in an easy-to-follow style, but examples and sample files are also provided on the CD that comes with the book.As a person who learns more by doing than by just simply reading about it or seeing it in a diagram, I found this feature to be very useful.
2-0 out of 5 stars No online errata for this book
I'll say something good first.I found the author to be well skilled in explaining the concepts as well as the procedure when using Dreamweaver 8.Each chapter is written like a good lesson plan, and takes you through the book task by task.I usually have to read more than one book on a technology because what one author fails to explain adequately, another explains very well. That is the case with this book, But don't buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks from a beginner
I bought a couple of books about Dreamweaver and I want to thank you for creating one that even a beginner could follow. The other books I bought were way over my head and I found myself lost before I even got started. I guess if I get more advanced I may appreciate some of the other books, but as someone who is new to Web design, I want to thank you for helping me get started. I couldn't have done it without you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Basics
Having only once created a webpage on FrontPage, I thought I was a bit ahead of the game. Still, I decided to look into a how-to book for dummies like myself.
2-0 out of 5 stars A rush job
The first 75% of the book deals with plain HTML, forms and other buttons and takes one from 0 to 5 on a scale to 1000.A lot of space wasted on mechanical clicking around the interface.Explain the menus and options and how to use them and don't need to walk through each one as if I've never seen a mouse. Now, if all you want in a web site is a bunch of words, links and pictures, all you need is MS Word and then Save as HTML.So, I imagine the fun part is when you have a database, to make the site smart... The database examples have missing steps and built in assumptions, no clue as to what could go wrong, etc.Needless to say, I spent many hours searching the net to fill the missing spaces left by this book.To my surprise, I found Macromedia's ONLINE UltraDev help a much better resource, with better explanations and a lot more graphics. Thanks Jannine, but no thanks! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helps Dreamweaver Live Up To Its Name
I only rated this book a 4 because although I've read dozens of software books, the only other book on Dreamweaver I'd read was a no-frills intro. Tarin's book delves deep into the hard-core details of this annoyingly complex, but increasingly necessary set of tools. This book is actually fun to read - I liked that. It is also irreverent - I REALLY liked that. The examples are crisp and easy to follow, if you think them through. I especially liked Chapter 10 on converting Excel and Word data to HTML, as Dreamweaver has a way of shrinking them to acceptable file sizes - a pain to sort out on your own. Dreamweaver's complexity can give you nightmares. This book, will let you count sheep instead. Good work Tarin.

1-0 out of 5 stars not very clear, sometimes confusing
Being able to follow directions well is not good enough for this book. This book was recommended to me by teachers, but it is useless and should not be used at all.I don't like that the visuals are old, and it is worse if you are using a MAC because they are mainly for PCs.The instructions are not straight foward - for instance I tried to upload my site images and half way through his instructions I was lost--I coulnd't find the windows he was referring to. I struggled for hours and finally, feeling defeated, I googled what I needed and found a web site that had more straight forward instructions. If I ever wanted to throw your computer or a book out the window, this was the time. Also, he seems to abbreviate his instructions to emcompass all the how to's in short sentences, but it gets too abbreviated that there seems to be steps missing -- he does this through out the book and uses names of windows this way as well. To my opinion this is definitely a waste of money and I regret buying it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Companion web site not there
The companion web site mentioned in the book is not there. When I typed in that URL, I got redirected to Peachpit's advertising site of this book, but no "links", "tools", nor "examples" mentioned in the book at all! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DREAMWEAVER FIELDS FOREVER!!
Are you new to Dreamweaver 8? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Marc Campbell, has done an outstanding job of writing a book for people who are new to creating their own web sites from the ground up and all that it entails.
4-0 out of 5 stars Needs Color!!!
This book is well written and laid out well (for the most part), but the lack of color really, really hurts this Dreamweaver 8 guide.Perhaps I am being a bit of a stickler, but a book in 2006 not only needs to have good content, but it need to also have a great layout as well.Deciding to go with 5 major colors (white, black, grey, blue, dark blue) not only makes the book seem dull and drab, it detracts from the reader the good content within.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the money.
This book takes you from web-site zero through building a basic client-side only web site using Dreamweaver 8.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dreamweaver starter
I was familiar with pre-MX versions of Dreamweaver, and this book allowed a great refresher course that cleaned a few cobwebs and taught many new features along the way. Teaching method very similar to hands-on projects/case studies in college; the best method to learn the myriad of the software's capabilities is to apply it! Included file disk makes it easy to skip ahead to lessons for more advanced users (i.e. each lesson comes with its up-to-this-respective-lesson's files, such that lesson 10 does not require you to successfully complete lessons 1-9; just copy lesson 10's files!)4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource for Learning Version MX
I must admit when I first opened this book (even though I still decided to keep it anyway), I found the amount of text and steps in each chapter rather daunting -- so I became a little impatient, set the book aside for 6 months and avoided using Dreamweaver MX altogether. Since I primarily do web design as a hobby, I wondered if I was getting in over my head with version MX.5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
I had a little HTML knowledge when I bought and installed Dreamweaver MX, but no web design experience. I was afraid to even open it! I bought this book because it was recommended for beginners. It starts by holding your hand and walking you through the workspace explaining all the tool bars and panels and how they're docked. I laugh now at, "Rest the pointer over a button to see it's name", but I wasn't laughing when I started the book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, I sure needed this book...
I couldn't put this book down. Super easy to read. My struggle with slices in Photoshop and tables with Dreamweaver are over. In just two days I was able to use my new found knowledge to design and publish my first photoshop designed website. The tutorials are well laid out and fun to follow. Thanks Colin, great job!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for print designers getting into web
If you are a seasoned graphic designer wishing to be able to create web pages as well print design, this book may be a good place to start. Designers fluent in Adobe Photoshop should have no problem creating the buttons, backgrounds, and other visual elements for the web pages you will create with this book. It's a totally different approach to creating a web site that I found pretty interesting--as in planning to make my own thumbnails and comp page for an upcoming project. I suspect this is a more intuitive way for designers to approach web design. Smith's approach is more that of a designer than a programmer. As a graphic designer myself who moved into web design a few years ago, I find Smith's approach more natural. The layout is straightforward and fairly easy to use.
