Everything you need to know about selling collectibles on eBay!
I've purchased several books on Amazon.com and while a lot of them were very good, I've never felt compelled to write a review.Then I purchased and read "How to Sell Antiques and Collectibles on eBay...And Make a Fortune!" by Lynn Dralle and Dennis Prince.This book is FANTASTIC!!!I had started an eBay business from home a few months before buying the book and was filled with questions...this book answered them all!It covers everything from how to set up your home office to choosing a business name & business plan to how much to spend at Garage Sales, etc.It is filled with amazing tips and tricks (for instance, Lynn gives you a website that helps you identify almost any china pattern which is invaluable when researching your item to post on ebay).
If you know nothing about eBay this is great
If you are fresh off of the boat and just discovered that eBay may permit you to cash out on some of your own stuff this book is great.If you think you will replace your current income by becoming an eBAy seller...don't quit your day job...yet.Although this book has information that can assist in helping the new eBayer it offers nothing new for the experienced seller.If you are new get this book if not don't.

Not just a successful start up story
Philosophy, international labor, high tech, economics, globalization, the internet and virtual universes are all neatly wrapped together in this book.It is a very successful telling by Mr. Dibbell of what is going on right now...not just in the MMO world but in many aspects of society.It was so fascinating for me to read.He did not hype up the metaverse phenomenon.But, he did make it a bit less complicated.You really get the message that what is currently undergoing is not trivial and has serious implications to how we all live our lives.Play versus work, the lines are getting more blurry.But, it might not necessarily be a bad thing.If "Liar's Poker" is the must read for the financial markets, "Play Money" should definitely be the counterpart for virtual economies.

Patchy
This book is well-written (mostly) and a good look at an interesting subject.However, the author seems not to trust his own subject, since he constantly moves away from the interesting part of the book (the story of how the strange market in imaginary goods works) in order to pad the book out with boring digressions on watching his daughter play, or even more boring half-baked essays on What It All Means (no surprise that the author is a contributor to Wired magazine.)Still, if you read the reporting parts, which are good,and skip over the self-indulgent, meandering attempts at philosophy, which are not, you'll learn a lot and enjoy yourself.

Making Hay
Play money is a fantastic read.It pulls you into its tale of Internet adventure and doesn't let go until the final word.I loved its refusal to separate the author's exploration of internet games, and his meditation on the economies they've generated, from the events of his off-line life -- child care, depresssion, marital break-up.Like a teenager, he starts out killing lizardmen in the fabulous realm of Ultima Online and ends up selling enchanted swords, pieces of gold, and miraculous suits of armor for a living.A real living, not a virtual one. (Is this play or is it work is the question.) The race to see if he can meet a deadline proving that he can earn more selling magic weapons and gold pieces than he can at his day job keeps the pages turning, and the painful -- and sometimes joyful -- unfolding of events in his actual life is riveting.

Useful but
remember: there is no such thing as a free lunch..you have to build systems yourself and test test test and then optimise a bit.(I said a bit :-)

Good techniques for developing a system
If you want a caned system, this is not the book for you.What this book will teach you is how to evaluate a system that you are developing.It is a little hard to read, but the excel formulas are worth it.

Very good book for serious system developers. Most books on the topic present a system, optimize it so it fits a particular market, show couple of very convincing graphs and voila, here is the contribution to the trading science.

I was disappointed that the book was really focused on how to create reusable elements that go into product information such as data sheets, marketing collateral, technical support, etc.It focused on auditing the content, finding the reusability elements across departments, then designing an appropriate hierarchy on top of a content management system.It assumed that content drives the information architecture when in most applications it is the business processes that drive the architecture.It ignored the majority of enterprise content like email, word docs, design specs, forms, etc. that make up the real information content of the enterprise.Read more

An expense that can be justified.
You are already into various Java technologies like Pricey for what it provides
I was excited about this book when I bought it online. Now that I read it, I am not very happy. The authors could have drilled deeper into some examples of how to implement the application using some wide spread technology like Java or ASP and COM. Giving concrete examples of what a Boundary Object should be, or what classes make sense to implement to interact with databases, just to mention a few, would have been very helpful. I also found "the top ten error" method very tiresome (I often skipped it and went straight to the right ways of doing things). The book was helpful though in providing a guide of what steps to follow in the design process as well as giving us a good idea on how to break the project into objects and diagrams.

A practical follow-up
Okay. I became interested in the lightweight Iconix process after a series of 5 articles in Software Development magazine, so I went out and bought the first book "Use case driven object modeling with UML - a practical approach". Read more

Well written and referenced....

The one and only COM/COM+ Reference......
It is normal for me to use allot of different books for reference, but in terms of the global based COM technologies that number it maximum. For example, I would usually use for reference regarding COM the book by Don Box, Essencial COM. On the other way if I was working with ActiveX I normally had hanging around Understanding ActiveX and OLE, Visual C++ ActiveX COM. And finally if I was working on COM+ usually my I would grab anything I could get my hands on and for DCOM, my favourite pet was the DCOM Unleashed!! COM/COM+ programmer's essencial

Wonderful story, well written
Author Adam Cohen presents the story of eBay in a clear, flowing style, depicting the growth from a modest beginning to the giant the company has become.What I enjoyed the most, unexpectedly, were the many stories of businesses that spawned from eBay, such as the gal who generated a business selling packaging materials to eBay sellers.Without fail, these spawned business germinated, not from a grandiose scheme with a formal business plan, but rather from the seed of a slightly creative idea, which, once put into practice, gained momentum.Perhaps a valuable paradigm can be found here for the self-help crowd, most of whom maintain that success must start with a grand, large-scale idea.

The Chapter about PlanetOutreach
As one of the Co-Founders and former Director of Guatemalan Operations for PlanetOutreach, I discovered this book was published after leaving PlanetOutreach in 2002. The author was misinformed about how our internet cafe / telecenter was actually launched and who was involved in making it happen. In fact, the author made it seem that PlanetOutreach was a project of eBay and it certainly was not, although we did receive a grant from their foundation to make it happen. Persons mentioned as being a significant part of this project came down to San Pedro to visit only; from a few days (Meg W.and Henry G.- to take a tour of the village and project) to three weeks (Griffin - who helped with painting bookshelves only). Naturally, I was stunned to see credit given to people when they played a very small role (if any!) versus the four us who founded it (Karina, Ron, Debbie and me). Naturally, I was disappointed to see how the author chose to innacurately profile this innovative enterprise.

Definitely for beginners.
I'm giving it 3 stars because it is helpful, but the audience needs to be clearly defined on the cover.This isn't for any intermediate or advanced users of eBay.This is for the grandma that just got a computer.
An excellent basic guide to eBay
This is an excellent basic guide to buying and selling on eBay. Griff peppers his instruction with plenty of personal stories and anecdotes, has screen shots of what you'll see online in case you're not sitting at your computer while you're reading, and tells you probably more than you need to know to use eBay.

I read this book and it told me a lot about how to buy and sell items on eBay. It is a great help for anyone. totally worthless
It always amazes me how some people have the ability to write a whole book with nothing to say. If you can make money using the techniques in this book please email me, as far as I'm concerned this book is only meant to promote their services. The second half of the book is surely meant to impress, not to teach. I hate these selling techniques: they even make us pay for their promotional material.

Pragmatic advise to those who can listen.
If one were to follow the advise in this book, they would be successful.The author leaves nothing to chance and is trying to teach the reader that he too must leave nothing to the whim of the market.The premise on which this excellent book is founded is to react to the market and not forecast it.As Jea Yu points out, it is harder to do than you might expect. The battleground is really the "baggage" that we all bring to the table - our ego's, our budget and most of all our bad judgment.This is a great book and teaches a winning style, if the trader has the discipline to follow it.

Outstanding. Read it again and again.
A novice should probably read that fluffy Toni Turner book to get an idea of the lingo, but no one should contemplate day trading without reading Lu. This book is a detailed description of the intricacies of no-nonsense, hardcore daytrading, written by a consistently successful practitioner. Read more

Although I've been an eBay seller for over 7 years - and am featured in this book - I found much of value in this book's pages. Not only can you learn about selling on eBay, Miller provides some basic "starting a business" info which is useful, especially to the eBay newbie.

This is more like a reference manual
This book probably covers most information regarding Sendmail but is not meant for someonetrying to learn how to configure sendmail. Most chapters have a small introduction and then go on to explain each feature/aspect in detail. For a beginner, it is difficult to connect the dots (features) and understand how to configure / run sendmail.

Mandatory
If you take care of Sendmail servers, you should have this book. I've been using this application for almost 10 years, and I still learn new things all the time, and this book is primarily where I get my answers. Highly recommended.

There has to be better...
I admire O'Reilly books for their uncanny ability to hook me into a lot of advance technologies.I desperately need to get a handle on sendmail for basic configuration, so naturally I come to O'Reilly.
