5-0 out of 5 stars How to Effectively Use XML
Elliotte Rusty Harold states in the introduction of Effective XML that the book is neither an introductory book nor an XML tutorial. Rather, it is a distillation of the author's experience using and teaching XML and how to use it effectively. The book does a great job of explaining how to use XML and its related technologies.
5-0 out of 5 stars I wish the XML Schema working group had a copy per member
This is not a book explaining XML. This is not a book that goes into any depth on XML APIs. It is not a book explaining any one XML format like XSLT, RSS, or XSD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great gap between book knowledge and effective use...
The flexibility of XML can often mean that there's a gap between using XML and using XML effectively.Elliotte Rusty Harold's book Effective XML - 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your XML (Addison Wesley) is an excellent way to move towards the latter condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obscure and too expensive
As a professor of ecommerce I think that the authors have unnecesarily obscured a subject that deserves a better prose and a more logical thread of reasoning.Theirs is a text written for other academicians and contributors to the HBR, not for students, unless they are candidates to a very high academic degree. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than eCommerce
This book is about much more than eCommerce. It is the handbook for doing business in the "New Economy". I have taught ecommerce courses in several universities and am familair with most of the titles avialable on this subject: none of them even come close. Read and study this book now before the competiton does.

4-0 out of 5 stars How companies survive in rapid technology sectors
Professor Afuah reveals how companies can structure successful Internet business models. He describes buying behavior among early adopters, ways to transfer innovations within a company, ways to reduce uncertainty, and methods of achieving a strong competitive position. The book's case studies give concrete examples that readers can use as a foundation for making business decisions. This is an instructive book for entrepreneurs and product managers who aim to launch products in fast-moving technology arenas. (Note: Bryan Richards is co-author of a case study on Microsoft's X-Box Online that appears in "Internet Business Models and Strategies").

3-0 out of 5 stars Took Mr. Afuah's class at Michigan ....
The book is (or was) an excellent primer to understanding the fundamental concepts of e-commerce.But while there are some business concepts thrown in (i.e. the 5 C's), they do not expand on those basic understandings of the Internet and its businesses.Anyone who had been following the Internet years via other publications would already possess the necessary knowledge that this book provides. If you don't have a good understanding, then at [$$$], there are cheaper alternatives.3-0 out of 5 stars internet business model

4-0 out of 5 stars Proven Portals Review
The content is very good, but it would be better if the book includes pictures, samples and draws with color.

4-0 out of 5 stars An explanation of portals at the level ofmanagers
A portal is a way to electronically access the fundamental information concerning your business, most commonly over the Internet. Therefore, an enterprise portal is one that can be used to access all public business operations. Since it is designed to perform all business functions, it is much more than a set of hyperlinked web pages. To start with, there must be some overlying consistency to the display of the pages, independent of what operations they provide the user. The links between the pages must also make sense, in that while there is a sequence of pages to follow, a way to jump to key initial pages in logical sequences is available.
4-0 out of 5 stars Vendor independent portal information
This book presents practical portal design principles in a vendor independent manner, emphasizing business process, ease of use, and deep integration of applications. Deploying a portal so "users check their email from the web or read the latest company press release" is not enough! The common goal is enterprise wide integration. The chapter on Return of Investment (ROI) presents how to make the ROI calculation and more importantly emphasizes business justification of the portal. This book uses a three-tier architecture of presentation, application server, and enterprise information service. The case studies presented and associated best practices were all useful but perhaps I would have enjoyed some examples of failures.. there must be a lot out there! 5-0 out of 5 stars Still Cool
This is a great book. It's making my life a lot easier. It presents sound methodology if you are going to develop and build a commercial Web site. I am using it in school right now. It really defines terms in such a way that they are not just words that you toss around. By defining, describing and giving examples the terms become second nature and you actually understand in a logical fashion the integrated elements of designing and maintaining a commercial Web site.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring, not up to date, and impossible to pick up...
The Web Design department of the career college I am an instructor and program coordinator at have used this text for several years now as the primary text for a web project management class. The problem with this book is that it sets the bar too high from the beginning and only applies if one finds themseleves a project manager handling huge corporate website accounts. It is impossible to scale the tone of the book down to explain the process when dealing with individuals and small businesses when the book has you only "wearing one hat" when sometimes you have to wear them all. It's also terribly boring to read, which makes it impossible to gain any understanding from it.This is an old book, in great need of an update. There are much more current and interesting books out there now that handle the same topic, and do it well. This may have been the first book of its kind, but it's certainly not the greatest.

2-0 out of 5 stars REALLY short on specifics
Talks WAY too much in generalities and jargon, with almost no specifics. The website for the book says they can't give more specifics about, for example, project specification documents, because of confidentiality. That's a really lame excuse for not coming up with a sample, detailed project spec. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything but the Sources...
I purchased this book in hopes of understanding what I need to do in order to move from casual ebay seller to powerseller.I did find ways to increase efficiency and the names and websites for the companies that provide the software but I did not find how to join buying groups, which ones are best or anything else that gives me a "Turn Key" ebay business.I work on computers, build custom systems, and occasionally take a trade in.I found that there is a company that uses this as a business model and was able to get some limited ideas from this book. This is not the book that answers "Where do I get product at a price that will make a profit on ebay".
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a How to Manual but interesting
Not sure what I expected. Ive never read much about doing business on eBay but thought it was time. Interesting stories. The format is to give you pointers by telling the stories of successful folks using eBay and the Author does that. I didnt find it terribly helpful for someone starting out and that maybe wasnt the intent but it was informative. I found that you had to dig a little for the secrets, maybe as it should be who knows? But an okay read, worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from some of eBay's Top Sellers
This is a fascinating "behind the scenes" look in to what makes some of eBay's top sellers who they are. And...they've each taken a different path to get there. I read this cover to cover, and have referred back to it several times. A great read.

1-0 out of 5 stars has the auther ever built a single e-commerce site?
After browsing thru all the chapters, i got the impression that the author is only buzzword-compliant and cannot go into any detail in any subject area. She must have read a lot on ecommerce, but i doubt she ever did any "real work" with ecommerce. The writing reads like it comes from a "good" student who diligently repeats all the words a professor said in a business classroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars high level design and management of a web business
Reynolds talks about many aspects of running your own commercial website. She discusses what type of servers you might need and how to configure these using RAID to maximise uptime while preserving data against hardware failure. Also mentioned is what type of net connections might be suitable and affordable. Along with how to implement security against various types of fraud attempts.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE COMPLATE E-COMMERCE BOOK
The dot-com bubble is about to burst again! But, that doesn't mean that e-commerce is dead--to the contrary. Author Janice Reynolds has done an outstanding job of writing the second edition of a book that provides select comparisons of various tools needed to construct, design, and run a successful e-commerce website.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to law text
As an MBA student, this text was a great introduction to business law.The actual cases proved to be quite interesting and illustrative of the topics discussed throughout the text. You must go through the text before reading the cases or you may be confused, but the terms are so well laid out that once familiar with them, the cases are quite easy to understand and you are able to brief them yourself! Will serve as an excellent reference and I have decided to keep it in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!
I could not be happy with the speed and condition of this item.I am very pleased with the purchase that I made, and look forward to doing business with them if needed.Thank you for the wonderful, and speedy service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Business Law Text!
Unlike the previous post, I found this book to be extremely helpful as a business student. If one is looking for a strictly "law" book this is obviously not the correct choice. For business professionals and students, however, it is an excellent introduction to the field of business law. The cases are in fact quite helpful and are not too long as stated in the previous post. The "briefs" provide a good insight into the heart of the issue at hand and are quite useful. They are much better than fabricated examples, as they are up to date, and add a 'reality' element to the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
I use this book at work to write C# 2.0 Windows Applications with SQL Server 2005. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the chapter. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Programming experience to use this book just a decent understanding of programming logic. The only criticism I could offer is that the author should have left out the hefty ASP.NET content that he probably barrowed from his co-worker Stephen Walther "Author of ASP.NET Unleashed" and reinforced his windows applications with universal examples of complex code. It's a good book for learning C# 2.0 Windows Applications as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

5-0 out of 5 stars integrate C# with other Microsoft products
Hoffman's book is not so much about teaching the basics of C#. But more about the support infrastructure that Microsoft has built about it. What it terms the .NET Framework. To be sure, some early chapters discuss what is inherently in C#, like the syntax of conditional statements or of string manipulation. The former is essentially what you could have read in a Fortran text of the late 60s. The if-else is so fundamental that all major subsequent languages have copied its syntax. The string functions match those in Java. Ditto for the sections on collection classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Security Issues
Greenstein and Feinman's "Electronic Commerce Security, Risk Management and Control" presents a nice overview of the major security issues and ways to address them.5-0 out of 5 stars Financial risk management
This book is great if you are reading it to complete financial statements audit. The author is linking electronic commerce with financial risk. Some audit procedures are proposed to manage these risk. In general, the book is from a manager point of view and you always find an accountant/auditor point of view at the end of each chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful but boring
I'm using this course for a business class in ecommerce. It was the best book I could find at the time (May 2000). I like the coverage and the approach (not too technical) but, oh my gawd, it doesn't read well. Long convoluted sentences. Diagrams that don't always communicate much. On the plus side, if you're an accountant, this is the probably the best ecommerce book around. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine for me.
I bought this with some hesitation gvien the mixed reviews and wanted to leave my opinion. I thought the book was more task-based, so when I wanted to do certain things lik epersonalization, it was very easy to turn to the right chapters. I was not looking for an object reference, as the online help has that so why waste money buying it? I did think the examples could have been bigger, but our site is so specialized the examples might not have been helpful anyway. I thought the writing was very clear and I was able to better understand Commerce Server concepts, which I have been struggling with. So I guess if you want a book full of code, this one is not for you. If you want a book that explains how Commerce Server works and how you can use it, then this book is probably a good bet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book, the only book
I'm in the midst of an e-Commerce project using CS 2002. I've read the book and can't disagree more with previous reviews. Where are the references into what each system object's interfaces are? Where's an example that isn't just "starting with a solution site"?4-0 out of 5 stars Good Technical Understanding
What I like most about this book is how it explains the underlying data structures and stored procedures that are used to develop Commerce Server 2002.I appreciate the fact that they go through each aspect of Commerce Server 2002 and explains it in enough detail that a good developer can further extend.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars wordy and confusing
I am using this book in my Masters of Info Systems class this semester and I have to say it is one of the worst text books I've ever read for a class. The topics go back and forth, often picking up an earlier topic in later chapters when they could have been easily included in the same chapter, and key concepts are discussed before they've been formally introduced.1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't use this book to teach an EC class!!!
This book did nothing to enhance my knowledge of E-Commerce.The terms used in this book are not terms that are commonly used. The authors should not be writing textbooks or instructional guides. The illustrations and diagrams did nothing to help the reader understand the material. The diagrams were literally a joke used just to fill up space.I quickly got tired of being given a short definition and told it will be discussed later. The book doesn't flow and leaves the reader frustrated. The authors use of E-Commerce terminology was too often bogged down in clichd rhetoric.Don't use this book to gain knowledge about E-Commerce you'll find yourself falling asleep and rereading sentences way too often. ... As the thinkers have said, you should strive in all situations to know yourself and know your enemy. Most of history's great thinkers, however, were not in business. In business, you have to know your customer and understand how your company interacts with him or her. The current term for this is Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CRM from A to Z, almost ate that book :)
My preferred book and my usually recommended reading for trainees who want to learn about CRM strategy and technical jargons. Combined with a CRM supplier explanation of software use and explanations of terms and strategies during training combined with reading this book can make a stranger really feel at home and ready to take on the challenge of introducing change such as CRM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Return on Customer
This book presents a much needed financial and economic argument for investing in customer service throughout any public or private organisation. For too long the presentation to executive boards has been based on what iseasily labled "soft" arguments. The authors have developed a way to demonstrate the value of customer service that CFOs and CEOs can relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be the first book you read on CRM
CRM Handbook should be the first general, broad-based, well-written introduction to CRM that you should read. The chapter headings clearly lay out the major functions and goals of CRM, as it relates to selling, marketing and customer service. This book is for all audiences, whether you are a small emerging company, like ours, or a large multi-national.Learn the terminology first -- and the mistakes -- before you start talking to a salesperson. This book is not about technical implementation, or a buying guide to different packages.

I bought this book cos I am planing to start up an internet business. The author should take out the remark at the back cover of the book that says ".....Learn from the pros how to start your own profitable Netventure, ......" This book doesn't mentioned a single word about thetechnology, tools or setup used by those successful site.

3-0 out of 5 stars You will not start your business after reading this.
The book is entertaining but you might not know what business to start at the end of the book any better. It is certainly not a "how to" book, rather a collection of often interesting stories of big (Borders books) and small companies with prior existence going into the Internetmarket. I enjoyed reading it and at least it is not yet dated (give it afew more weeks though). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A seminar for the E-ntrepreneur
Here, at last, is a concise introduction to the world of e-commerce for the semi-savvy professional. Terminology, strategic planning, branding, advertising, traffic generation, and, oh yes, technology... every topic budding e-ntrepreneurs need to consider before risking their futures is here presented with clarity and grace. One caveat: those looking for strictly the technical or strictly the business side of e-commerce will find this book lacking. To explain the whole, the author had little choice but to abbreviate some of the parts.5-0 out of 5 stars Real, practical advice.
This book isn't about just creating a website--it's about running a business! With the help of this book, I was able to come up with a plan for expanding my business into e-commerce.The book is very readable, and full of sensible advice. Each chapter moves you closer to making your idea a reality. It starts with getting real about what's going to work and steps you right through everything you need to know, all the way through building your site in the most economical way and right up to marketing it.My hat's off to this author for writing a book that's a good read and good advice, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific primer on a complicated subject
I just finished reading this book and recommend it enthusiastically to anybody interested in how B2Bs and extended enterprises must work in the future. The book is broken down into 3 parts: Part 1 explains how B2Bs interact and how trust plays a critical role, Part 2 discusses the concept of e-Trust and business processes by industry, and Part 3 discusses e-infrastructure, security, and controls on a more technical level.Overall, the author manages to provide clear and comprehensive coverage on an exremely challenging, constantly evolving subject. ...
